>> actually, i was hoping i looked a little better. >> we'll catch up with you and get the latest in a few. let's go right to our coronavirus developments overnight, some big ow that vacs at least 70% effective and researchers think could be 90% effective in preventing the disease. and pfizer's vaccine could be given to the first americans as soon as december 11th. >> in the meantime millions are going ahead with their thanksgiving day travel plans. despite the warnings and the dramatic increase in covid deaths. officials say the weekend was the busiest two days at u.s. airports since march. >> and more and more families strained by the pandemic are looking for help. and what a scene. this is the size of the lines at food banks at cities across the country. the lines just seem to go on and on. we have every angle covered this morning. let's start with tom costello and the latest promising vaccine news. >> reporter: good morning. the head of operation warp speed is saying we may see needless in

shoulders in about three weeks. but the news out of the uk is very encouraging. astrazenica and oxford university is reporting encouraging results on phase three of their vaccine. oxford university and astrazeneca are announcing their vaccine candidate is 70% effective at protecting against the coronavirus. that's less than the vaccine's from pfizer and moderna that recently showed 95% protection. but the oxford vaccine is much cheaper to make and can be stored easily allowing for more widespread distribution. oxford notes that the effectiveness of its effectiveness jumped to 90% of its volunteers when given half a dose followed by a full dose. >> we will have 200 million doses of actives by the end of 2020 and more than 700 million doses of active by the end of q1 globally. >> reporter: the news comes as

the federal government is preparing to distribute tens of millions of doses nationwide. now the head of operation warp speed says we could see that starting in less than three weeks, as early as december 11th. >> within 24 hours from the approval, the vaccine will be moving and located in the areas where each state will have told us where they want the vaccine doses. >> reporter: pfizer is the first drug company to formal seek approval and shows 95% efficacy against covid during its trials. now an meeting is set for december 10th. then the fda makes its final say. as for who gets the first doses, likely those on the front lines like health care workers and individuals at higher risk. the goal will be to vaccinate 20 million people with plans to add another 30 million per month after that. >> help is on the way. effective vaccines have crushed

epidemics. we can do that with the vaccines that are going to be coming online. >> reporter: another development. and then that is the fda has given emergency authorization to regeneron. and it seems that the president seemed to bounce back within a matter of days. he received that antibody treatment and now that's being approved for emergency use. not a vaccine. it is a therapy if you get sick, but now approved as well. savannah, back to you. >> got it. a treatment, not a vaccine. now we have three potential vaccines that could be headed toward approval and they all have different percentages of efficacy and safety. how are people to make sense of that? >> reporter: i was talking with my colleague keir simmons in london a short time ago because he's following the oxford announcement there in london. when it comes to actually analyzing the raw data, when we start to do that, look at the

raw data, it may come out in the wash that all of these are pretty close to the same -- have the same level of efficacy, approaching 90%, maybe even in excess of that. but we are still in the early stages of the data. when the data all comes out, he thinks it's likely all of these are pretty similar. and by the way, we expect johnson & johnson to come out with their vaccine in the first quarter as well. >> and a little perspective, because the fda said that it would approve a vaccine that is 50% effective and so all of the vaccines have far exceeded expectations so far, and we will wait for the science to come in. tom, thank you very much. the urgency for a vaccine growing by the day with hospitalizations and deaths skyrocketing close to close. that surge is leading more cities to encourage new lockdowns while others openly defying restrictions to stop the

spread. morgan chesky has more on this. he is in oklahoma city. >> reporter: good morning to you. here in oklahoma the numbers are concerning. new daily covid cases up by more than 140% in the just the last two weeks. similar stats are playing out nationwide, putting these hospitals under incredible strain. now the cdc saying don't travel during the thanksgiving holiday, we're saying packed airports that this morning is pushing many communities to the brink. >> this morning the covid crisis is worsening. in nearly half of allstate®s, deaths are up nearly 50% and many are avoiding the cdc's warning to avoid traveling. with crowds seen in airports from phoenix to chicago. >> nothing is stopping me. nothing. >> reporter: with the tsa processing more than 2 million travelers friday and saturday, and the highest two-day total since march. >> if you are in a crowded airport, you are lining up, not everybody is wearing masks, that puts yourself at risk.

>> reporter: roughly one in five hospitals reporting critical staff shortages. in amarillo, texas, hospitals are so overwhelmed, one patient died while waiting for an icu bed. staff run on empty. >> you want high quality nurses who can take time with a patient, and that's in jeopardy. >> reporter: in el paso, the national guard helping load bodies into makeshift morgues. in los angeles, officials are shutting down all bars and restaurants for in person dining starting wednesday. some are protesting the restrictions, even burning masks. in new york the governor is calling for an investigation into this mega wedding. thousands packed together. in tulsa, oklahoma, this megachurch is under fire for a friendsgiving event with few wearing masks and the second mass gathering there in a week. the pastor there is defiant. >> we're not going to reject people just because they take

their mask off. >> reporter: but in nearby texas, a sobering message from a family after months of staying apart, they gathered one afternoon for a birthday party. soon after, 15 of them tested positive. their mother in a hospital. >> because of my family wanted that same normalcy that everyone else does, we ended up having a covid outbreak, to please protect each other. stay apart this holiday season. >> reporter: and this morning, health officials including dr. fauci saying if people don't follow guidelines now, we could be seeing another spike for christmas. shaping up to be a tough thanksgiving for millions of americans. we are watching the long lines play out for miles at food banks stretched for miles in state after state. and in neighboring texas, we know that 40% of users there for the very first time.

certification, a process that is typically only a formality. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: two key deadlines today set to deliver two more blows to the president's push to deny the election results, with michigan and pennsylvania both ready to officially certify their vote totals, showing joe biden as the winner. chris cristie slamming the trump team. >> the conduct of the president's legal team has been a national embarrassment. >> reporter: now the trump campaign is trying to distance itself from controversial attorney sydney powell, among those pushing a convoluted conspiracy theory claiming an international part involving in part a dead dictator led to stolen votes. >> that's when they came in the back door with all the mail-in ballots. many of which they had actually fabricated. >> reporter: there is no evidence of any of it. in pennsylvania, yet another trump lawsuit now dismissed. a federal judge in a scathing ruling writing rudy giuliani and

the campaign asked him to, quote, disenfranchise 7 million voter ins the state based on speculative accusations, and adding this is simply not how the constitution works. and now he is calling on the president to let the transition to begin in earnest. >> reporter: maryland's republican governor tweeting the president, who hit the links twice this weekend, should stop golfing and concede. >> i'm embarrassed morpeople inhe party aren't speaking up. >> reporter: taxpayers footing the bill even after an automatic hand recount shows biden leading with merely 13,000 votes in michigan, the state's republican chair and the head of the republican national committee are asking for a two week delay in certifying the vote totals showing biden won there. the move attacked by critics who worry it is part of a broader push to give electoral votes instead to president trump, an extreme and legally dubious

strategy the trump campaign is now openly discussing. >> will it go to those state legislators? >> well, that's a possibility. >> you mentioned the president's allies are also pushing for michigan to delay its certification. what are you hearing about whether that could actually happen and what happens if they don't certify today. >> let me take those two questions. it is not clear that it will happen. not even some of the people on the board say they know how this is going to go two republicans and two democrats sit in on that state canvassing board typically their job is to give a stamp of approval. right now the margin favors joe biden. both sides are bracing for drama today. one of those republican board members says that he has gotten hundreds of messages pressuring him one way or another. and what if the board is deadlocked and it is a 2-2 split? that is not the end of it.

it happened at a baptist church near the campus of san jose state university. police say that there were no services going on at the time. and that some homeless people had been brought into the church to get them out of the cold. no word on possible suspects. two more members of congress announced they have tested positive for covid-19. joe courtney of connecticut said he contracted the virus after coming in contact with someone who tested positive last week. and brian style of wisconsin said he got a positive test after experiencing some symptoms last week. in the last ten days alone, nine congressional representatives have tested positive. if you didn't stay up late, you missed a good one. fear not, though. here's how it went down. >> great protection again. mahomes to the end zone, wide open.

good morning. >> reporter: hi. good morning, hoda. sources close to prince harry say some are driving to wedge between the two brothers overall of this. prince william has already spoken out about the investigation into this 1995 bombshell interview with his mother, princess diana, calling it a step in the right direction. prince harry hasn't yet commented. and a source close to him says he's aware of what's happening. prince harry from his home in santa barbara is getting regular updates a source close to him tells nbc news adding you don't need a public statement.

prince harry was 11, prince william 13 when their mother princess diana sat down to tell her side of the story about her marriage to prince charles. >> well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded. >> reporter: prince charles and princess diana's divorce was finalized months later. and she died in a car crash months later. and now, bbc says that bashir used dishonest tactics to obtain the interview including using a graphic designer to create fake statements that he used to convince diana that royal employees were being paid to spy on her. charles spencer introduced diana to martin in 1995. he accused the bbc of a coverup and is demanding an apology.

a very good morning to you. it is 7:56. i'm laura garcia. we are following breaking news this morning in fremont where a police chase ended when a car crashed into a building. the crash triggered a gas leak which crews have now capped. police say they were taking two home invasion suspects when the suspect's car slammed. officers arrested one of the suspects at the scene. police say officers later located the other suspect trying to blend in at a bus stop and arrested them. >> reporter: i'm kris sanchez in san jose where two people were stabbed to death inside grace baptist church. police have not described the circumstances of this crime to us at this point, but the pastor of the church tells us there

federal bench. and, so, there are many things that we can do, including protecting judges personally identifiable information, what's called pii also, we need to enhance marshall services. we need to be able to let the marshals do what they need to do in protecting judicial officers. we need to enhance security systems in courthouses all over this country but these things need to happen because as i have said over and over and again, this is a matter of life or death and for us, daniel's death should be a reminder of what will happen if we don't do things and we don't do them immediately. >> he showed such courage in those moments. as you mentioned, he literally took a bullet trying to protect his own father what an extraordinary young man

you raised, 20 years old, so much in front of him. what would you want people to know about your daniel >> i would want people to know about my daniel that he always put others in front of himself that's why i know he would want me to do what i'm doing now because he would want others to be protected that was my son. he used to smile all the time. he just wanted to make everyone happy. and, you know what, i know that daniel is looking down and saying, mom, keep it going keep it going because we need to make sure that everyone is safe. >> judge, where do you find your strength where does it come from? because i have to say, as a mom, i look at you and i marvel at your grace and your strength. >> it comes from my faith. it comes from my understanding that there is more to this world than what we are experiencing here on earth.

and so i know that i have to, you know, believe in my god, and i have to believe that there are things that he would want me to do and i know that there are things that daniel would want me to do. and, so, every day i wake up and i thank god for another day. and i thank god for the opportunity to try to do something that will mean something in this world. and, so, that's what i rely on. >> you touched us deeply, judge salas with your example. i know that you and your husband were wonderful parents what a testament to you that your son loves you so much he wanted to spend his birthday weekend with you at home even at 20 years old he truly, truly adored you. >> yes oh, he was, for us, our life he was the center of our universe, and we were the center of his universe. and i think that's why daniel, it wasn't even a question of what he was going to do. he was going to protect his dad.

changing work being done at st. jude research hospital. we're going to talk in a moment to the outreach director marlo thomas. >> but first kerry sanders is in florida with the story of an athlete with remarkable resilience. good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning. at 14 years old, this young athlete's football career may just be getting started. but his six-year journey against a far more aggressive opponent appears to finally be over thanks to the doctors at st. jude. >> he was their first born, ken and kim's only child who they would name onai, an african name chosen for its meaning, prayed for. >> who knew we would have so many people praying for this young man. >> reporter: to see him today, a powerful high school running back with a promising future, you'd have no idea that since the teen was eight years old he had been fighting a serious medical condition. >> if we could switch places with him we would have.

>> reporter: in fourth grade, the budding athlete began to complain about headaches, excruciating, debilitating headaches. >> i was waking up in the middle of the night with them, screaming, running into their room crying. >> reporter: mom knew deep down something was seriously wrong and urged doctors to give her son an mri. >> i was never prepared for the phone call i got telling me he had a brain tumor. >> reporter: when you heard the big c word, what went through your mind. >> like the bottom of my world fell out. >> when i hear her crying, i am like, what's going on? i had all of those thoughts in my head. >> reporter: then at eight years old, he was too young to fully understand. >> i didn't know what a brain tumor was. and then she said, well, you are going to have to have brain surgery. i knew what brain surgery was. i just lost it at that time. >> reporter: it was unusually

complicated because the tumor was near his optic nerve fearing he would go blind, they had to leave two-thirds of the tumor in place. >> it's right there. >> reporter: the initial plan, treated with chemo but even with chemo's notorious side effects, he kept playing football. >> we were on our way home from school, and i said, mom, pull over and i just got out and started throwing up and she's like, well, let's just go home you're not going to practice. i'm like, no, i want to go to practice. >> reporter: where does that come from? >> i don't know. it's motivation. >> reporter: unfortunately, motivation wasn't enough three years later, the headaches returned >> i kept telling them, this is his brain tumor. i know it's his brain tumor. they kept saying, no, no, we don't think it's the tumor. >> reporter: his mother's intuition was right. the tumor had more than doubled in size which led the family to

memphis. doctors at st. jude recommended radiation using a targeted proton beam therapy. pioneered just for children at st. jude. >> with a 95% success rate versus 50% success rate for the chemo, no pun intended, it was almost a no brainer. >> this is prior to radiation and you can see the tumor in white here and this mri scan is during the last week of radiation and the white area is significantly decreased. it's just been about three months since he completed treatment, so we're helpful. >> reporter: today he dreams about some day playing for his favorite team, the seattle seahawks. >> we'll see if the seahawks have something they could share with you. >> what's up >> we heard that you have been training hard to get back on the field. keep it up and keep working hard.

>> and with that effort you are putting in, we know you will achieve your dreams of becoming a football player. >> i'm speechless. >> reporter: as is his ability to live his dreams what is it about football? what drives you? >> it is a fun sport, and it is something to channel my energy and helps me to forget that i have a brain tumor. it make me feel normal, and when i get on the field, i feel like nothing can stop me. >> reporter: and i believe that. go onai. his stats are so impressive. he can bench press his own weight, runs the 40 in about five seconds his coaches and teammates are so impressed with him on the field but also off the field as we all are. the westfield shamrocks are definitely behind him. he went through all of this with the st. jude doctors treating him during a pandemic which only complicated things. >> what a remarkable story thank you so much for that

seahawks scouts should get down there and watch those shamrocks outreach director for st in action. >> guys as we mentioned, marlo thomas is the national outreach director. what a remarkable onai is, and he's amazing. but talk to us a little bit about this targeted therapy that clearly shrunk that tumor. >> the proton beam is the smallest beam on the planet, and we're the only children's hospital in the world that has won. it was created just for us but what was amazing is for onai's brain tumor it was so close to the most sensitive part of the brain where we learn and where we hold our memories so we had to create an entire new protocol, especially for him. so that's what's so exciting about st. jude we're a research center, so we're always able to give each child a specific thing that's going to save him or her and i'm so excited for onai. and i love that he says i'll never stop just like we say at st. jude,

we'll never stop. >> look at him go. you know, he obviously was treated during a pandemic, which had to add difficulty to an already difficult situation. >> well, you know, it is amazing. dr. downing, our ceo, who you seen from time to time, and he just changed the entire campus to make sure that every patient was safe and every family member and all of the team. and you know, he created, and we created our own covid test. we also analyze them. so we also created our own hand sanitizer, and the pharmacy did that. and we got the pve from all over the world so we never ran out, and he also organized the campus by color. so if you have a yellow or purple badge. the yellow badge is where children were and the purple is where you couldn't be where children were. so it was people with the purple

badges could not go to the cafeteria, and it is really sort of hard, hard for us, because st. jude is a family place, and we always have the siblings, and the moms and the dad, but for the pandemic, only one parent was allowed on the campus or to housing facility, but we have never stopped to take new patients, and continue to function with very, very strict rules. everybody is wearing masks, and it is great that we have the resources to create our own covid tests, and created our own hand sanitizer, and so it is great. >> a little birdie told us that it was your birthday over the weekend. happy belated. >> yes thank you.
