biggest automakers is switching gears in a legal battle with california over clean air emissions. general motors on that issue. "today in the bay" starts right now. good tuesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we'll get to traffic in just a bit. first, meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast on this terrific tuesday, kari. yes, and it's going to be another nice one. we're starting out mostly clear across the bay area. we're not seeing as much of the fog as we were yesterday morning. we are looking at all sunshine throughout the day and it will be a touch cooler as we head towards thanksgiving and the winds will start to pick up as the dry cold front comes through. we are going to stay dry and mild even as we go into the week as our high temperatures reach into the low to mid-60s for the south bay. we'll take a look at all of our microclimates coming up. mike, how is it looking for the early morning commute? better, kari.

a few minutes ago i checked the chp report and as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza the 880 overcrossing was a report of a wrongway driver coming off where the headlights are on the left and the top of the screen. it alarmed me and would alarm you, but chp has cleared it without incident. no problems other than the one report. overnight road work going on. no major issues as far as slowing goes. we'll talk particulars coming up. marcus? mike, thank you. counties are talking about what will happen when the covid-19 restrictions levels are updated. here in the bay area san francisco, san mateo and marin are all in the red tier. now everyone else is mostly in the restrictive purple tier. all 41 tier counties are included in the new curfew that went into effect saturday night. san francisco and san mateo county health leaders have each warned counties may be on the verge of going purple.

case counts are headed higher across the bay area. well, more details of cases climbing so high, in fact, in southern california l.a. county leaders are on the verge of issuing a new stay-at-home order. a decision may come as soon as today when supervisors meet. and it comes with a new travel order taking effect tomorrow. it recommends anyone arriving in l.a. county from elsewhere self-quarantine for 14 days. ahead of thursday, 35% believe gathering is worth the risk of spreading or catching covid-19. according to a new national poll by children's hospital in michigan. about two-thirds of parents, though, say they plan to ask their guests to maintain social distancing as much as possible. 88% say they would ask family members with covid-19 symptoms to stay home. a live look at sfo this morning with only two days left until thanksgiving. many are still planning to

travel. this, of course, despite warnings from health officials urging people to stay home. at sfo last night there was lots of room to spread out inside the terminal. travelers say the flights were full. >> usually they've been leaving space in between and it was not the case at that time. >> some airlines are adding flights just to meet the high demand. our coverage continues online. we're tracking the number of covid cases in every county to see where things stand in your area. just head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. happening today a community meeting in response to an sfpd shooting that left a suspect critically injured. police responded to a fight and one man involved refussed to drop his knife. officers first used a taser on the man before firing live rounds. police will share the body camera video.

two teenagers are recovering this morning after a stabbing in fremont. it happened last night. one is in stable condition but suffering major injuries. the other is expected to be okay. police are still trying to figure out what led up to that stabbing. general motors is suddenly switching gears by switching sides in the white house legal battle with california over clean air emissions. the company has announced it will no longer support the trump administration in its efforts to loosen clean air standards. instead it's starting with california and leading environmental groups. gm asked other automakers to join them in switching sides, which toyota is said to be considering. analysts say this is just a matter of backing the winning horse with joe biden taking office in january. let's get some fresh air. more tahoe ski resorts opened. squaw valley and alpine meadows opened today. on friday sugar bowl, heavenly

and north star. in most cases you'll have to book your lift passes ahead of time with some major restrictions on the slopes. my girlfriend is heading up tomorrow, and she says a lot of stuff is already booked out. i don't know if i'm going to be in luck to go skiing over thanksgiving, kari. it would be nice to be able to go to the sierra. and let's check out our live view that we have at the resort at squaw creek, and we are going to see very cold temperatures there even though we haven't had a lot of nature made snow. that man made snow will be sticking. let's talk about our season totals at some of our resorts. at sierra tahoe 40 inchls of snow in boreal, 37. sugar bowl, 33. alpine, 33. 26 inches at mammoth. so that's nice to see. hopefully we'll get more but i don't see it in the forecast. we'll talk more about that

it's a live one. if the temperatures are just right, it's shaping up to be a terrific tuesday. absolutely. it's going to be cool to start. this is what we're feeling as we start out on this terrific tuesday, as you like to say. i like to call it a pattern because temperatures in the upper 30s in parts of the north bay but most of us in the 40s as you head out and we have a temperature right now in san jose that's 50 degrees and 42 in hayward. so we're starting out very cool when you compare that to yesterday at this time in some spots it's up to 13 degrees cooler. let's get a look at our microclimates and our high temperatures for today. it's going to be very nice. comfortable reaching 66 degrees in east san jose and in gilroy. we're also going to see mid-60s for much of the east bay with danville reaching 65. oakland today up to 63 degrees. along the coastline we're seeing some upper 50s. up to 64 in palo alto and in san

francisco mostly 50s today but with that sunshine it'll probably feel a little bit warmer and we're going to see a high of 64 today in sonoma. so looking at the dry weather in the forecast if you are going to be traveling to the north we are looking at sun showers up there around the pacific northwest, but it just dries out by the time it reaching the bay area. we're stuck in the dry pattern and if we're going to have some dry and sunny weather, well, if you have solar panels, it's good to use that, all of that energy, to power your solo panels. and it's the equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide we're not putting in the air to planting 22,000 trees a day. so it's really good that we are getting all of that sunshine, but it will be nice to get some rain. as we go through our thanksgiving forecast, it will be slightly cooler, more sunshine in the forecast even going into early next week. mike, you've been looking at the roads. anything new popping up? looking at a preturkey

tuesday for mo for traffic. a look out to the roadways and one issue i want to point out for folks in oakland as we look at the maps the big view shows you green which is what you would expect even out of the altamont pass. the next hour by 5:45 metropolitan more traffic. as traffic starts to build, we'll see the southbound side. the construction crew clear. there's no slowing. if they clear in time things should be just fine. if they hold up, it will be slow getting away from the bay bridge. right now getting to the bay bridge and across the span a live look shows you no problem. a clear view and an easy drive. between 5:45 and 6:15 is when we should see the bulk of the traffic for the early commute. back to you. thanks so much, mike. california senator dianne feinstein planned to step down from the senate judiciary committee, not commenting on the reasons why but plans to focus on climate change, wildfires and drought issues.
