the forecast going into the weekend. when we may have a light chance of rain and where that's coming up. mike, how is it looking getting around the bay area? the bay bridge toll camera is clear and that's traditional during the thanksgiving week. we have lighter volume and almost no commute times like right now. the map shows a little bit of slowing across the span where the arrow is. there is fog. watch out there as you head over between vallejo and novato. pretty much all green except for one spot. >> thanks so much, mike. it's 6:01. happening today president-elect joe biden may receiver his first classified intelligence briefing and will deliver a thanksgiving message to america. >> this comes following his

exclusive one-on-one sitdown with lester holt. tracie potts has the latest on the presidential transition. i know the president-elect saying america is back. >> reporter: he said america is back, and he was talking about foreign policy after introducing his national security team. they had a very clear and coordinated message that isolationism, america first policy from the trump administration they disagree with and they want to see america reconnect with our allies and with other countries. today president-elect biden just spoke exclusively with nbc news is giving a thanksgiving message to america, said to focus on the sacrifices americans have made especially this year with covid and so many other things going on. in that interview he talked about his national security team and how he's reaching out to other world leaders. >> i've spoken with over 20

world leaders, and they all are literally very pleased and somewhat excited america will reassert its role in the world and be a coalition builder. >> reporter: and now the doors are open. he also told us that they have meet w meetings with every agency, 20 meetings. so that biden transition and the trump administration are now connected, they're talking, and presumably sharing or going to be sharing information. meantime let's talk about the stock market because president trump is taking credit for a big rally on wall street. >> never been broken, that number. that's a sacred number, 30,000. nobody thought they would ever see it. >> reporter: the stock market, one thing biden will have to deal with. he says he has priorities coming into office, rolling back

president trump's climate order, trying to get kids back into school safely. and an immigration bill. >> a lot to tackle. i want to talk about the popular vote because the tally keeps going up. president-elect joe biden now has 80 million votes, more than 80 million votes. put that in perspective for us, tracie. >> reporter: the second highest that we've seen, the biggest in the 21st century. if you look at the spread of the votes between biden and president trump it continues to grow. it's a significant win, if you take a look at it people often cite the fact that hillary clinton won 3 million more in the popular vote than president trump did. biden has more than doubled that spread so far. >> that he has. >> tracie potts live in washington, thanks so much. let's take a live look a lot closer to home in san francisco.

people across the bay area plan for thanksgiving. we are hearing the cdc may be ready to cut down the recommended 14-day self-quarantine with the u.s. seeing its highest death rates in months since the pandemic started. 12.5 million confirmed cases. california is seeing some record numbers. yesterday the state confirmed 15,000 new cases with hospitalizations up more than 80% over the past two weeks. at the same time the cdc is finalizing its plans to shorten the 14-day quarantine for possible exposure. it may become ten days or even a week in part due to better testing and that symptoms come on within four to five days of exposure. the total to 45 counties but nothing has changed in the bay area. san francisco, san mateo and marin are still in the red tier.

san francisco health leaders are anticipating a move into the purple tier and may reach that threshold by sunday. a slide into the most restrictive tier would mean more rollbacks. that would mean sf restaurants would have to shut down their outdoor dining at 10:00 p.m. >> for so many families making it in the bay, it's really hitting home as we approach tomorrow's thanksgiving holiday. >> bob redell is live in oakland where one of the food banks giving out meals later this morning, bob. >> reporter: marcus and laura, in a few hours they will distribute around 1,000 meals to people at this location here in oakland. we can see some people lined up waiting for the 8:30 distribution, an emergency distribution. the alameda county food bank has

opened up 28 new distribution sites since the pandemic began. the san francisco marin food bank almost twice as many as a year ago. to give you a sense of the impact covid-19 has had on people many who are now relying on these food banks lost their job in the shelter in place order. >> it's full of the gear a crossing guard would use. and this was just about a week after the schools closed. this is a crossing guard who no longer has a job. >> reporter: in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood glide memorial church expects to serve 300 meals tomorrow morning but unlike in years past there will be no celebration inside the church facility rather underneath five large tents set up outside.

6:15 tonight. norm he'll we would ask you what's the weather going to be like? i guess today just sit home and watch. >> right, we can watch from the comfort of the living room. with a lot of those events. really dense fog especially in parts of the north bay. check out santa rosa. only half a mile. we've seen it fluctuating in novato and napa so watch out for the patches of fog. if you're going to be out along the coastline, maybe hiking on the peninsula temperatures in the low 50s to start. we will get some sunshine and highs reaching into the upper 50s. we do have some changes ahead. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minimum. mike, what are the changes you're seeing for the commute? kari, we are seeing a few more spots that aren't in the green so a little more slowing.

when the dow first crossed 10,000. there was some concern at the time technology would not be able to handle it on wall street because it was a five-digit number. in the end everything turned out fine. today i can report the dow will start at 30,046. investors pleased with the presidential transition finally fully under way, janet yellen chosen as the next treasury secretary as well. tracie potts showed you a clip from president trump's 1:04 press appearance yesterday where he congratulated everybody on the stock market number and said the number 30,000 was, in his words, sacred. the truth of the matter is there's nothing special about 30,000 other than it's a nice round number like a ten-year wedding anniversary or a centennial celebration. it's a nice way to mark progress. now, to be fair, the president likes to take credit for the stock market and you can argue

about how much influence he actually has on the buying and selling of equities. the dow has nearly doubled since he was first elected president. you know what else is on its way up is home prices. case-shiller said prices rose in every market they measure up 7% nationwide, phoenix, seattle, san diego leading the way. houses in the san francisco metropolitan statistical area rose 6% for the year. notice i didn't say san francisco bay area. case-shiller defines san francisco the way the u.s. census does. splitting off the peninsula and the south bay which for whatever reason case-shiller does not measure. mccormick spices is buying cholula that bought frank's red-hot. it is made in mexico but owned by a private ferm base e firm b

means that we could see some breakers today up to 24 feet not good for just being along the coastline because we could have big sneaker waves that could draw you further out into the ocean every 17 to 19 seconds. still big breakers along the coastline for our northwest facing beaches. our winds will pick up driving some of those waves as we look at our coastal wind speeds. if you're planning to have thanksgiving outside tomorrow take a look at our wind speeds during the middle of the day. we could see wind gusts reaching 30 miles per hour. that tablecloth may get blown off. it will feel quite cool out there.

that's about what we'll see for much of the bay area. one weather system could bring in light rain and the rest of the bay area will likely stay dry as it continues to move through. we do have still a dry fb. we've been watching that fog that may slow people down in the north bay. >> we are looking at this on the map, though, over in castro valley. the castro valley y is jammed up coming off the split. it looks like a y, that's why they called it that. a car fire may affect your left side but a lot of lane shifting between mission and 880 as folks

kitty love was stuck for nearly two days as her family figured out how to get her down. the owner turned to social media for help. a neighbor saw the plea and volunteered to scale the big tree in the dark to get her. >> once i got up there and realized trying to grab her, hold on to the tree and climb down was a little more difficult than i was expecting. >> little kitty love. he lost his footing and fell the last ten feet down, but the good news here is that both are doing okay. look at that. now you know why the name kitty love. 6:26 for you. listen up, everybody, are you locked in on your thanksgiving plans? up next we'll talk about if you're driving going to grandma's house, flying, whatever you're doing, keep it safe.

to the pandemic the most american of holiday traditions gathering with friends and family around the thanksgiving dinner table. with hospitalizations soaring, experts are trying to sound the alarm. >> jackie ward is live for us in sunnyvale. the health experts have been talking a lot lately, jackie. what are they wanting all of us to know? >> reporter: laura and marcus, the message hasn't changed. it's been the same for months. just stay home. in fact, health experts say the actions society takes the next couple weeks will give us a sense how we can get through this surge over the next couple of months. the secretary of health for california says it's still not too late to cancel your thanksgiving plans. four more counties across the state are in the most restrictive tier due to a spike in cases. san francisco is tightly holding

on to its red tier status but is expected to change by the end of the week. the state's surgeon general explains why it is critical we do not get together with people outside our household or covid social bubbles this thanksgiving. >> in the first week of november we saw a 50% increase in our case rates for covid-19. we really want to encourage families to not have mingling, not have mixing. >> reporter: experts are pointing to what happened recently in canada. infections and hospitalizations shot up after canadian thanksgiving last month. now the toronto area is on lockdown. u.s. health experts are mindful something like that can happen here which is why they are asking people to please stay home. if you are not staying home at

the very least they are encouraging to you keep up with the health habits we've grown accustomed to, wash your hands, wear a mask and social distance. marcus and laura? >> a lot of people will do some traveling. most people will drive but talk to us about air travel. how is that looking this year? >> reporter: we have a live look at sfo this morning. if you were thinking of getting a covid-19 test before going away to the holidays, you might want to think again. advanced reservations are booked through december 1st including walkup and day of travel testing. a side note sfo says 179 of its employees have tested positive since the start of the pandemic. this news comes as the highest number of people are flying this week. the tsa says they are doing everything it can to keep people

angeles and for the next three weeks there's a ban on indoor dining. case numbers soaring approaching an average of 5,000 new infections per day. there was talk supervisors might take more drastic action. they debated a stay-at-home order. the idea has been discussed so far no action will be taken. our coverage continues online. not only case numbers but closures by the county to see where things stand in your area. head over to nbcbayarea.com. developing right now san jose police will talk about the deadly stabbing at a downtown church. it happened at grace baptist. two people died, three others injured. one of the survivors was helping feed the homeless sunday night. he was stabbed as he tried to help the others.

state regulators are launching a fact-finding review of pg&e. there's an outside chance that it could lead to a government takeover. the cpuc president tells pg&e that the preliminary review is, quote, well under way. it involves pg&e's record of sparking multiple wildfires over the years and the cpuc is citing the agreement pg&e made with bankruptcy plan which it now is falling short of expectations. a new delay for crab lovers. the start of the dungeness crab season is pushed back. the delay extends two more weeks to december 16th. it's due to endangered whales swimming in the same area where fishing gear is deployed and the fear the whales will become entangled. still ahead, how to keep tomorrow turkey day stress free.

basis. since the certification or what you call the -- they've been very forthcoming offering all access and so wre going to be starting those on a regular basis. >> now biden says he wants to be fully up to speed on day one and knowing what's going on with the military and our allies and our enemies will be critical doing that. it's easy to forget biden was, until yesterday, an unemployed civilian who had no access to any secrets. vice president harris knew far more than joe biden did about america's most classified information because she sits on the senate intelligence committee, but it would have been illegal for her to pass those secrets on. biden is surrounding himself with experienced people who have been in government before. janet yellen yesterday, you saw what that announcement did to the stock market. noteworthy is former secretary of state john kerry as the new

head of the fight against climate change. president-elect biden says that will be a cabinet level position. now what is and is not considered cabinet level is up to the individual president. there are specific cabinet positions, of course, like secretary of defense, but kerry's position will not be one of those. america most recently added was homeland security after the 9/11 attacks. president trump has been tweeting a lot, particularly things he sees on newsmax, which are disprovable. this one, in wisconsin somebody has to be indefinitely confined in order to be voting absentee. now a simple google is easy enough to figure that out. you can find that on the wisconsin website that it is incorrect. we're hearing but have not confirmed because it's not on the schedule that president trump will travel to pennsylvania today to atten a republican hearing on voting accompanied by his legal team he

"today in the bay's" cierra johnson live in burlingame digging deeper into a lot of changing shopping habits. >> reporter: good morning, yeah, that traditional black friday being the start of the shopping season really isn't applying.

2020 has been full of a lot of changes, and this year shopping has begun a while ago. so throughout the pandemic online shopping has been on the rise with nbc reporting that e-commerce grew by more than 30% in just the first and second quarters. experts believe the restrictions many place on in-person shopping continue to push e-commerce with retailers like walmart and amazon seeing what they consider significant increases. and as the pandemic continues many shoppers continue to utilize technology for essentials like grocery shopping which leads us to where we are now at the beginning of the holidays. those retailers are continuing to push online shopping marking the start of the shopping season could be behind this. many major retailers including target, best buy and dick's sporting goods announced they will not be opening thanksgiving day and are driving shoppers to their website. take a listen to what cnbc

consumer expert stefphanie ruhl has to say this particular shopping season. >> listen, this is going to be all about e-commerce, online shopping. it has to be. this is not the year you'll have the ability to be out and about inside lots of stores. so normally we see those black friday sales kick off friday. we're seeing those sales start earlier and last longer. >> reporter: she continues by explaining many people are shopping earlier and many are anticipating shipping delays because of the influx of shoppers, so they are placing their orders sooner, so there are a lot of upsides for consumers this season especially if you're shopping online that includes the ability to price check between different websites. that's something that stephanie ruhle says a lot of shoppers will be doing before they place that order to go through this holiday season. >> i think we should call you

well, everybody is getting ready for tomorrow. probably not too many political discussions at your dinner table since we're keeping gatherings pretty small. here are other tips on how to keep your thanksgiving stress free. try to prepare ahead of time, cook, set the table. i'll try to do that today. keep it simple. this is the best tip. if things get too stressed out just discreetly leave the room, go sit in your car for a few minutes and remind yourself of all the reasons you love your family and your friends. keep it cool. >> i guess i should take it for a warning if someone goes and sits in their car for a while. >> he said i do it daily. that's what he said in my ear. >> i love him. >> we all do. let's get a look at the

forecast. something else we love today, ka kari, love that weather. take a look at this beautiful sunrise that we have looking from belvedere over to san francisco. you can see the low clouds rolling by in the distance. we've seen the thick fog rolling by parts of the east bay as well as the north bay and some of the lowest visibility in the north bay. check out novato down to zero so be really careful heading to work this morning. we are going to see that slow to clear. if you're heading out for a run watch out for the foggy spots especially around santa rosa. temperatures in the upper 40s but we will have all clear skies by late morning and gradually warming temperatures. most of us will see the highs in the upper 50s and low 60s today. we're up to 62 in martinez. san jose a high of 61 degrees and some low 60s in san francisco today. but i wanted to tell you about the winds. they're going to start to pick up today and it will be slightly cooler as we see the high winds

up to about 20 to 25 miles per hour near the coastline. if you are planning to have thanksgiving outside tomorrow, take a look at this. our winds in spots like napa, livermore, concord, 25 to 30 miles per hour. it's going to be windy and that may blow the plates right off the table. so make sure that everything is all strapped down if that's your plans to have dinner outside. not only will it be windy but it will als beo cool. let's check out anoch. our temperatures for tomorrow afternoon reaching into the mid-60s. we're going to see the dry weather continuing in the forecast. i am, though, watching out for a slight chance of rain on monday, and it looks like it could at least make it to the north bay. the rest of the bay area will probably not see any rain. it's going to continue to weaken as it moves in. after that no more rain in the forecast, so here is a look at our seven day showing that slight chance of rain monday. up until then we're seeing highs in the 60s. we'll even have near freezing temperatures the next several

mornings. it's going to be cool and we'll see no major changes heading into next week. now, mike, you've been watching the commute. how is it looking right now? there are a couple of changes and they're major compared to the rest of the light drive. on the peninsula side as you look at your map it will be on your left side. that's 101 northbound around sfo. i've circled it. i thought it wouldn't be a big deal because the crash cleared a few minute ago but it's still slow there. so watch that just 101 heading north past sfo. meanwhile, the other side of the bay we're looking at castro valley y still slow. that car fire activity is still just off the roadway. it is slowing coming from redwood road. the rest of the bay aside from those two spots looks really good. no backup at the bay bridge but there's some fog in the for the bay and a good amount of traffic still there on 880 as we look at our oakland camera. back to you, laura.

health leaders sounding the alarm ahead of thanksgiving. "today in the bay's" jackie ward is live for us in sunnyvale. what are they trying to tell people right now? >> reporter: they're certainly hoping they don't see a lot of traffic here on 101 at the overpass of the lawrence expressway. health experts have the same message. the actions determine the next couple of months. experts point to what happened in canada. infections and hospitalizations shot up after canadian thanksgiving and now the toronto area is on lockdown. u.s. health experts are mindful something like that can happen here which is why they're encouraging everyone to stay home. jackie ward, "today in the bay." well, for so many families just making it in the bay, food

banks skyrocketing. giving out holiday meals later this morning. the need is so great, bob. >> reporter: and you can see the people who need those meals are lined up. they're waiting for 8:30 to come around when the food banks can distribute about 1,000 meals to the people at this location. and what's been described as an emergency distribution, to give you a sense how many people needed help with food the community food bank has added 28 distribution sites so far. north of us san francisco marin food bank serving almost 60,000 per week. almost twice as many as a year ago. again, a line of cars waiting for the meals to be served.
