right now at 5:00, a surge of cases on the front lines. the growing number of heroes testing positive for coronavirus across california. this as so many express their gratitude to doctors and nurses at thanksgiving. >> we are literally pouring gasoline on the fire that is already burning very hot. holiday travel taking off. the growing number of people still flying and driving despite a warning from health officials. plus, helping those in need. a live report on the thanksgiving meal give aways happening today across the bay area as many struggle to put food on the table this thanksgiving. "today in the bay" continues right now. happy thanksgiving to you on this thursday. thanks so am up for making us a part of this morning for you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kira klapper. we have the a-team marcus and kari hall still here. we'll turn to meteorologist kari hall for the thanksgiving forecast. >> it looks to be really nice

for today. for getting outside but the winds will be kicking up and that's something you'll notice, especially this afternoon. as we go into the rest of the forecast, we are going to see some very cold mornings. in fact, frosty valleys heading into the weekend but still no rain in the forecast for next week. and if you are planning to have thanksgiving dinner outside, let's head over towards the east bay as we check out danville. now, our high temperatures today will reach up to about 62 degrees and if you want to have dinner during the warmest time of the day, plan dinner around 2:00 or 3:00. have it early. we'll talk more about our microclimates, as well as what is ahead. if you are going to work, we're looking at a smooth overall commute across the bay area and taking a look at the maps. we do have gusty winds in some spots as you cross some of those east to west bridges. just make sure you're careful because those winds have been picking up. we have seen a couple of incidents on some of the back roads, but we haven't seen any

on the main interstate. >> love all that green, kari, thank you so much. now to the covid-19 pandemic. grim numbers statewide. california just reported a record number of cases yesterday. more than 18,000 yesterday alone. the positivity rate continues to creep up, as well. currently at 5.9%. two weeks ago, it was just 3.8%. hospitalizations are up 88% over the last two weeks. and a new report further reveals the devastating toll that covid-19 has taken on front line health care workers. it was released by the national nurses united. it found that california is leading in covid-19 infection rates amongst health care workers versus the rest of the country. nearly 36,000 cases for front line workers here in california. well, back to that fight against covid-19. and starting this morning, there will be extra enforcement of rules in santa clara county. jose and firefighters are out this morning and what are they doing? >> well, they're going to be out in places like this in san pedro square where we are and they're really concerned along with health officials about those numbers that kira was just talking about. they're just startling. the surge of covid right now. they have the added enforcement and they're also going to be out warning the public, as well. many of those health officials fear this could be the mother of all covid superspreader weekends with family and friends desperate to get together for traditional holiday dinners and gatherings coming out for busy shopping. santa clara county officials are waving the red flag because they've got a record number of new cases, like you just heard. a record number of people hospitalized and few critical care beds left. they're running out of options. >> we can't depend on our counties next to us because they are under the same stress and

strain. they can't provide us with beds in their counties. so, we are on our own. and our hospitals are hurting. >> desperately. here is some of what those enforcement teams. and firefighters are going to be looking for. grocery stores are now limited to 50% capacity and retail stores so popular on black friday weekend will be limited to just 25% capacity. customers also have to wear masks and social distance. and the warning to the public that they're going to be talking to individuals, as well. you, too, can get fined with businesses facing fines of up to $1,000. they plan to be out through the holiday weekend at a minimum. we're live in san jose, thom gensge jensen. >> thanks so much. the holiday travel rush that wasn't supposed to be happening, is happening. lots of planes getting ready to

take off. last night we saw people coming and going in big numbers at the oakland international airport. since friday, the tsa has screened nearly 5 million people at the nation's airports. that's half the number of travelers that were out last year at thanksgiving. but the crowds have increased substantially since the pandemic began. >> with this increased travel with all this mixing of populations from one location to another, family to family. we are literally pouring gasoline on the fire that is already burning very hot. >> everything shut down there. so, just to get her back here and have us all together i think was worth it. but it's just a nerve racking time. >> while california health officials are concerned about the covid surge, many travelers we spoke with said they're not letting that concern stop them. >> we know, kira, has been a challenging year. but many local organizations are still working to help those in need have a thanksgiving meal. the city has plans, still, to

hand out thousands of meals safely. >> "today in the bay" reporter cierra johnson is live in san francisco this morning to break down how this group plans to pull it off. they do it every year, but, obviously, this year is different. cierra, good morning to you. >> good morning, how are you? yeah, covid has really made things rough this 2020. but this organization here they just promise to continue what they're doing helping folks here in the community. this is at the scene for you right now. we're at the 300 block and they have the entire block shut off and i want to step out of the way to show you this. in a matter of time, this tent will be filled with folks, three tents actually filled with folks eating a delicious meal. these tents are ventilated for everyone's safety and all. about 2,300 meals will be served here to folks in the community whether they live here on the streets or they want to bring their family just to enjoy the meal. now, clients visiting here will

be limited to one household per table. that's because that is how many, that's just social distancing protocol here at glide. there's enough volunteers as i mentioned to serve meals for 2,300 folks and the folks who aren't able to get to this tent, they will be using the outreach van to deliver more than 200 meals to folks in the community. take a listen to why some folks visit glide and the plan to get those meals out to others. >> me and my room mates, we don't have enough money to buy food. >> some of those meals will pack in to-go boxes and glide's mobile services team will actually take it and deliver it all over the city to different encampments. >> now, these meals will begin being served at 9:00 and runs until 1:00 and something new this year is a virtual celebration.

drive-through thanksgiving dinner. and did you see her on your screen? another easy way to help is our nourishing neighbors food drive the next time you're at safeway. you make a $10 donation along with your groceries at check out and that money goes right to local food banks. our drive goes toughhrecember 29th. a liv look traatic and toll plaza, as well as san francisco. we didn't expect it to be a lot of traffic. they're really making sure everyone is safe on the roads this holiday weekend. the agency now in the middle of its maximum enforcement period. now, it started last night and is expected to last until sunday. last year during the same time, 42 people died along state highways. happening tomorrow, san jose's christmas in the park experience is set to begin. the holiday truadition is undergoing a big change and being reimagined as a

drive-through experience. you can still see the traditional displays and trees decorated by community groups. it costs $10 to $20 per car depending on what time you go and also sign up in an advance online and i already bought my ticket for my family to drive through christmas in the park. you know, you have to get ahead on all these covid changes. things are selling out fast. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall now for a look at our thanksgiving forecast. hey, kari. >> hey. that's one of those things that you can do that is not dependent on the weather because you're inside your vehicle. you can go at any time. we've seen some very quiet weather as we see our temperatures starting out cool. some upper 40s in napa, as well as santa rosa and we're at 44 degrees in san jose. little bit cooler in the south bay and then as we go into today, here's a look at our wind speed forecast. this shows you the wind speeds in miles per hour and it's going

to be quite gusty this afternoon. taking it through noon with wind gusts over 30-mile-per-hour in parts of the north bay and even into the evening it's still looking pretty breezy. so, just a heads up about that. if you are planning to have dinner outside today going to the beach in spots like half moon bay, we'll see sunshine and temperatures in the low 60s but some very large breakers are expected for today. just be careful. you never turn your back to the water. we'll see some of the highways continue through at least noon today and some of the breakers may reach up to 20 feet. we'll watch that, as well, as the forecast and i'll have another update in a few minutes. marcus? >> thanks, kari. the last thing we want to hear this time of year, stolen gifts. still ahead for you at 5:25. the tricycles taken from a bay area christmas program and how the community is stepping up to help. and the powerhouse deal that could soon send shockwaves through silicon valley. plus. ♪ glory days

maybe you can sit back for a few more minutes and enjoy the show. we're going to see temperatures very chilly. that makes you want to stay in that low 40s but we'll have sunshine and warming temperatures for the rest of today, kira. >> kari, thanks. new this morning, a major deal could send shockwaves throughout silicon valley. according to wall street journal salesforce is in talks to buy slack for $17 billion. the pandemic has helped slack with millions of people using it to communicate while working from home. the deal could be announced as soon as next week. we all know that many of you will be doing things a little different this year for thanksgiving, but with the help of technology, you can still get that quality time in with your loved ones. zoom is lifting that 40-minute time limit on its free version. house party app has built in activities such as cards and charades or team up with others to solve mysteries in an online

escape room. the parties can have an online watch party for content from streaming apps like netflix, hulu and disney plus. >> you can all watch the thanksgiving movie or holiday movie together. >> if you want to work off some of the indullgence dinner, sign up for the virtual turkey trot. those are just a few of the ways you can stay connected while staying safe over the holidays. several stores are closed today, including target, walmart, kohl's and dick's sporting goods. the good news for you if you need a last-minute thanksgiving item, safeway is open until 6:00 p.m. but the bottom line, you want to check online or even call the store before leaving the house. thanksgiving, of course, is the peak day for home cooking but also home cooking fires. with turkey friers a big contributor. that is according to the folks at erie insurance. here are some tips. start with buying the right size

>> that's always fun. i can't wait to see what they come up with dealing with all of that. >> i always dvr "snl" because i can't stay up that late because i work really early the next morning. but, yeah, it's always fun to watch it like three weeks later. i'll watch that around new year's day. >> nonetheless, you'll be watching it. 5:18 for dwryou this morninn this thanksgiving day. kari hall has a look at the thanksgiving forecast. kari? >> a lot of people will be outside for today and it's going to be really nice. let's head out to clear lake. if you want to set up a table out on the back patio, it's going to be windy. now, just a heads up about that. here's a look at our temperatures for today. it's going to reach up to 59 degrees and if you're planning for the warmest time of the day, how about dinner at 3:00. it's going to warm up and cool down quickly for this afternoon with those winds and probably going to feel cooler and make sure everyone's got a jacket and you're holding down that blanket

on the table. now, we're going to see some of those temperatures today reaching into the mid 60s for the east bay and spots like antioch, san jose will reach 63 degrees and morgan hill will see a high of 61 in santa rosa reaching 65. if you do have solar panels on your house and you're doing your part in helping the environment, we are going to have enough solar energy today as well as the next few day physical you're using regular amounts of electricity. you should be able to generate everything through your solar panel and we are going to see in some spots where we're not putting all of that carbon dioxide in the air. we're saving 1,400 tons of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere each day. so, pretty amazing. we're also going to see more solar energy as we are not getting any rain. in fact, all of the stormist i m systems i have been watching are drawing closer and we're still

getting the cool air but just not getting the rain and at this point we do need some rain and it doesn't look like we'll see any in the extended forecast even going into the middal to end of next week. just enjoy the sunshine while we have it. temperatures in the low 60s. mild each and every day with our morning temperatures starting out in the 30s. so, some very cool mornings ahead. as you're heading out for work this morning, let's show you what's going on for the commute. it's been really quiet and hopefully it stays that way. i haven't seen a lot of cars out on the roads. we had a couple minor issues and especially some of the off roads and not on the main interstate. i'm seeing all green sensors here which means the commute is slowing well. let's take a live look at where we are heading out the door this morning and some of the live views that show look at the bay bridge. pretty quiet. so hopefully you don't have a lot of time to get towork. you can get there, you know, just maybe leave a few minutes later, kari and marcus. >> yeah, stick with us for a few

honestly, this is a story that could only happen in 2020. someone stole christmas even before we have thanksgiving. 200 tricycles were stolen from the san francisco firefighters storen unit after someone cut the chain. how they knew to go to that particular unit and why they

been as disquieting as the quiet of an elementary school. james herrera has heard it and felt it. >> like something's missing. every time i walk by the playground and see it empty. i forget what my job is. >> reporter: james' job for the past seven years has been custodian at holly oak elementary in san jose. he says nothing has felt quite right around here since the day the kids went home in the spring and didn't return. james, of course, can't bring them back. but he could, he decided, do the next best thing. >> yeah. i'm going to make my own. >> reporter: now to understand just what james means, there's something you have to understand about james. he is much more than holly oaks custodi custodian. he's something of an artist in resident. james' creation are all over holly oak from the tree in the library to the flag in the

cafeteria to sculptures and m a mosaics all over campus. >> reporter: the inspiration for james' latest project came from a painting he bought at a flee market. >> when i saw the picture it reminded me of the playground during recess. the light bulb went off in my head. >> reporter: so for the past month james has been cutting out kid-size images and sending them home for students like winona and gia to decorate. >> probably flowers. >> reporter: to decorate and return. james has more than 100 now and hopes to display them all on the school's playground bringing life, in a way, back to holly oak. he knows that learning from a distance has left many students feeling disconnected from their school community. and he wanted to help. >> the morale was down, you know.

"today in the bay" continues right now. and a good morning to you and happy thanksgiving to you all. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kari klapper in for laura garcia taking a well deserved thanksgiving morning off. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall with a look at your holiday microclimate forecast. hey, kari. >> good morning. and, yes, they're giving mike the morning off, too. we're going to cover weather and traffic as we get a live look outside in san jose. we've had a clear but cool start. we're going to have a very nice day but those winds will be picking up and expect some frosty conditions in some of the valleys going into the weekend. by next week, i'm still not seeing any rain in the forecast. we're enjoying sunshine. thanksgiving dinner outside as we get a look at our forecast from morgan hill and even reach into the low 60s for today. if you're heading out to work this morning, expect an overall

light commute. i have seen on some of the maps that we do have an issue with 580 going eastbound through dublin and a car fire reported but overall we're not seeing anything that is really backing up traffic and, so, we have all green sensors here across the bay area. i'll keep an eye on both the eye on the weather and traffic that is coming up. another update coming up in a few minutes. >> looking forward to that, kari. in the fight against covid-19 this morning, extra enforcement of rules in santa clara county. this as health officials battle a surge in cases and a stress on hospitals. >> "today in the bay" thom jensen in san jose where covid-19 enforcement teams will be joined by firefighters as they look for people violating health orders. good morning, thom. >> good morning. and happy thanksgiving, kira and marcus. yeah, here in san pedro square and other locations that are so popular during the black friday

weekend. the enforcement teams out looking for violators of the new rules and here are some things they will be looking for, in particular, as they go out on this busy weekend. grocery stores are now limited to just 50% of capacity and retail stores have to open to just a quarter of their normal capacity. just 25% during this normally very busy black friday shopping weekend. and customers will also have to wear masks and social distance. >> as crews have time when they're out, they're checking on businesses to ensure capacity iss issues. if they see an issue, we report up to the chain to ensure that compliance officers notified. >> these teams really working for health officials who fear this could become a major covid superspreader weekend with families and others gathering for dinners and other holiday traditions. santa clara county health officials say they have a record

number of new cases and also seeing a record number of people hospitalized and just a few critical care beds left. these enforcement teams and firefighters plan to be out through the holiday weekend at a minimum. you can be, well, you can get a fine up to $1,000 if you're found to be violating. that's not what they want to do. they hope people just comply and hope tamp down this surge. >> we hope everyone follows those rules, thom. thank you. public health officials continue to plead with people to not have large family gatherings. santa clara county is in the midst of a third wave of infections and likely the worst so far. it is quickly stre lly stretchi county's medical resources. 68 icu beds were available and by the afternoon 20 more people have been in the icu leading to only 48 now available beds. now, this is troubling and

quickly dwindling number of county with more than 2 million residents. >> all the way from gilroy. all the way to mountain view to palo alto, saratoga, los gatos and here on the east side we have collectively few number of beds. >> the highest spike that we have observed in the county. every day there are now over 500 new cases diagnosed. >> and the only thing that will help is the public taking action to flatten the curve. county leaders are asking people to call family members instead of going over for thanksgiving dinner and take other precautions like wearing those masks and keeping social distancing from people who are not in your household. so, let's take a closer look at those numbers for you this morning. this graph right here showing you the daily new cases in santa clara county. look at july. the county reported 386 cases in one july. that, at the time, was the height of the summer surge. but look at where we are right

now. 532 new cases on november 17th. that's a record high for the county. shows that cases are continuing to trend upward. all outdoor dining across los angeles county is going to be shut down for at least three weeks. many restaurant owners are worried they'll be forced to close for good. and across the country, sort of the opposite thing happening. the supreme court is blocking an attempt to limit attendance in houses of worship in new york. even in areas hard hit by the virus that ruling came down overnight. well, president-elect joe biden addressed the nation offering hope during a challenging time. sg >> i know we can and we will beat this virus. america's not going to lose this war. we'll get our lives back. >> so far president-elect biden remains quiet on two key administration posts, which are secretary of defense and

attorney general. a presidential pardon for michael flynn. president trump granted a full pardon to his former national security adviser lying twice to the fbi during the russia investigation. flynn was fired in 2017 for lying about his contacts with the russian ambassador. earlier this year flynn asked to withdraw that guilty plea. the justice department tried to drop the case but a judge had not signed off on it leaving flynn in jeopardy. 2020 a challenging year but many local organizations are still working to help those in need have a happy thanksgiving and a great meal. glide in the city does plan to hand out thousands of meals safely. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live in san francisco with a look at how the church is safely distributing that food this year. cierra. >> good morning. that same distribution starts with what is happening behind me. in the last half hour, you can see we're making a little

progress. we have the centerpieces placed on the table and three of these tents in the area to host those individual families. each family will be seated at a table for social distancing purposes. in all, 2,300 individuals will receive meals here at glide. now, it kicks off at 9:00. runs until 1:00. and it's really just so everyone has a warm meal. 2020 really has been difficult for a lot of folks and for a lot of folks, this is their normal. this organization wanting to help those in need and for those that can't make it to where we are, which is a 300 block of ellis, there will be the van that is going throughout some of those encampments and throughout the city to distribute more than 200 meals. so, the folks here really not letting covid get in their way. they are doing what they can to practice social distancing and sanitary measures in place to keep everyone clean. really just the new normal as we have been saying for the entire year. but they're not letting covid

stop folks from getting a warm meal. so, again, brunch here begins at 9:00 and there is annan online virtual portion and there will be some music and poetry and a way for folks who may not be in the city or enjoy the event or volunteers that make it their tradition still a way for them to be involved. things really coming together. last time no centerpieces and now centerpieces and we are hearing chairs could arrive next. just really making progress. still about three and a half hours out from this meal but some good things happening here in the city. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." now to a small kitchen in san francisco where one woman is making a big difference. she's cooking a traditional thanksgiving meal. for complete strangers. margaret kraniac made the offer on her social media page and her grateful neighbors are replying. >> this is the first time i have

been apart from my family in my whole life and it sounded like a good thing to do. >> these she's not the only making a difference. we found people at gyro express making full turkeys. it is not for their menu. they'll give away full plates of food until it runs out. since it's been a tough year, they want to help their neighbors. >> a lot of people want to help out. if you've been looking for a way and just haven't found the time, this is it. the next time you're at safeway make a donation for $10. part of our program here. we're teaming up with safeway and it's really our nourishing neighbors food drive. it is a great way. you can give a little tear sheet and $10 and help local food banks feed so many families in our area. this goes on through december 29th, so you still have time. renters in san francisco are gaining leverage as they try to make it in the bay during the pandemic. according to apartment lists, apartment vacancy rates have

more than doubled as many tenants have desserted the bay area housing market. zumper tells "the chronicle" the average price of a one bedroom in san francisco in october was $2,800 per month. while that is still among the hide highest in the nation, rents are down 20% year over year. it allows tenants to be more selective when choosing a place to live. look, here we go on this thanksgiving day. it's going to shape up to be a nice one. that's a good one, kari. a lot of families are hosting dinners, if they're going to have any, outside. >> yeah, we're also looking at sunshine. it's going to be cool this morning, but the afternoon is looking very comfortable. let's take a live look outside if you're heading out to work. this is a look at the view through dublin on 580 and we have seen a light flow of traffic and no issues with visibility but, once again, chilly out there and our temperatures started out in the

happy thanksgiving. always a treat to see you. we saw it was raining earlier in new york city. how is it looking now? >> kira and marcus, it is starting to rain again. we got a little bit of a break but it was storming earlier, a real mess here. look, we're where the parade normally starts on the upper west side and you have seen floats and balloons and not happening this year, but the parade is still going on in a sort of different way. they've got a bubble at harold square. an area that no one is getting in or out. that's where the parade normally ends. this year they have a lot of the show prerecorded and still live elements, of course, and performances. they want to make sure it maintains as much of the same flow as it does every other year because organizers think this is a tradition that needs to continue. >> you're still going to see it, you still have comfort and take comfort in knowing that we're

we're taking it through 1:30 in the afternoon and look at how windy it is going to be in napa. 32-mile-per-hour winds and 29 in livermore. san jose, 25-mile-per-hour gusts and so even as we go into this evening, it's still going to be breezy. that will make it feel even cooler than the actual temperatures reaching into the mid to low 60s for today. if you're along the coastline, let's check out half moon bay in the forecast. we'll see our highs reaching up to about 62 here and mostly clear throughout the day. but if you will be at the beach, heads up to never turn your back to the water. we are going to have some high breakers today. up to 20 feet. and they'll be coming in every 15 to 17 seconds, especially through noon and the highest waves earlier this morning. especially for our northwest facing beaches. going through this forecast, it is all dry. and the one chance of rain i was hoping for is just drying up in the forecast for monday. and then even going into next

expanding the scope of its layoffs. the company is saying it will lay off about 32,000 workers. the majority of those layoffs will be from its parks, experiences and products division. prolonged closures at disney's california-based theme parks and limited attendance at its open parks has forced the company to slim down its workforce. warriors superstar klay thompson is officially on the road to recovery. he underwent surgery yesterday to repairachilles. the news here, he is expected to make a full recovery. he will miss the entire season for a second year in a row. thompson was out all last season rehabbing from a torn acl. 5:54 for you this morning. happening now, a new harris poll shows 25% to 30% plan to travel for thanksgiving. more likely to ignore cdc directives and plan to gather with people outside of their household. aaa says it only plans to see 4%

welcome back to you. in our bay area proud series we told many stories of rescues pulled off by police officers and firefighters. >> this next story is a little different but it is a rescue. the heroes of this story are a crew of public works employees with some incredible timing. garvin thomas shares this story in this morning's bay area proud. >> this is ultimately a story about timing. and the triumphs of good timing over bad. the bad jenna madrid said happened in september in the bathroom of her livermore home when she dropped her wedding ring in the toilet the very moment it was flushing. >> it fell out of my hand.

it's gone. i figured it was in the sewer pipes and long, long gone. >> reporter: jenna called the plumber, but it was too late. he was resigned to never seeing her ring again until recently when she met a friend for lunch. >> i'm telling her the story what happened and she said, well, have you called like the water reclamation plant and i never thought of doing that. >> reporter: so more than two months after watching her ring disappear, jenna gave them a ring and this is when jenna's timing couldn't be better. >> 300 plus miles of the sewer system. >> reporter: public works supervisor said a crew was down the street from jenna's home the day before and the debris they cleared just happened to be sitting at the plant. >> it just happened to be sitting right here. >> reporter: john browning head the crew that had done the work and was happy to look through the debris but thence ch anccha finding anything?
