"today in the bay" starts right now. good friday morning, the day after thanksgiving. i'm kira klapper. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus and laura, of course, have the morning off. we'll get a check of the commute, such that it is, in a minute. let's start with meteorologist kari hall tracking the temperatures. morning, kari. good morning. and we've had some very cold temperatures. let's get a live look outside in san jose. it's all clear and we're going to see that sunshine gradually warming things up today. it won't be as windy. we have frosty valley temperatures over the next couple of days but then some mild afternoon and still no rain in the forecast even as we go into next week. a look at our high temperatures for today. we're going to reach into the low to mid-60s but, of course, that's after the chilly temperatures we're feeling right now. we'll talk more about that in a

few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the early morning commute? it's what we would expect. a very light drive the friday after thanksgiving. we'll watch for any surprises. let's look at the palo alto cameras. everything looks clear here just about willow. a bit north at marsh. reports of a fire on the side of the road. the roadside fire has the fire crew blocking your slow lane so be careful as you're coming into palo alto. no problems on the sensors. just a note for folks driving along the peninsula. everything looks great. we'll check on an earlier incident in the east bay. kira? many of the traditions we celebrate are now scaled back or canceled altogether and that, of course, includes black friday shopping. the covid curfew means stores could not open their doors at midnight overnight. extra enforcement is under way in santa clara county for one where firefighters are on the lookout for businesses violating heth orders. they'll work with covid

compliance officers who can fine businesses on the spot. grocery stores are now limited to 50% capacity. retail stores 25% capacity. customers have to wear masks and keep socially distant. >> that's because covid cases are still surging near record levels. more than 14,000 new cases reported across the state yesterday. that is down from earlier this week, and 416 new cases were confirmed in santa clara county. the county has reported more than 400 cases a day for the past week. seven california hospitals are in line and two of them to get the vaccine in the bay area. seven are total. two in the bay area. the fda gives pfizer emergency use authorization. if that happens for its coronavirus vaccine, health care workers and first responders like paramedics at ucsf and zuckerberg san francisco general would get the first doses.

ucsf infectious disease specialist hong says this could happen before christmas. he expects the two-dose vaccine will be free for everyone. it could eventually be available in places like target and cvs and walgreens. masks and other precautions could be necessary for most of 2021. >> own though it may not get into the arms of most americans until maybe the end of late spring or early summer, it is something to hold on to as a metaphor or symbol of how far we've come. >> some of the possible side effects from getting the vaccine include fever, muscle ache and a headache. marin county could soon fall back into the state's most restrictive purple tier because of a rise in cases there. right now marin is one of only three bay area counties in the red less restrictive tier. if marin goes purple, predicted as soon as this coming tuesday, many indoor businesses would

have to close and marin would have to follow the state's overnight curfew. san francisco health officials anticipate regressing into the state's purple tier in the coming days. turning now to the presidential transition, president trump heads to camp david this morning. his visit is closed and it is unclear who is going with him or what's on the agenda. this comes one day, though, after president trump answered questions for the first time since the election. when pushed about whether he would vacate the white house january 20th if electors finalize the biden victory, here is what he had to say. >> certainly i will. and you know that. >> president trump also announced plans to travel to georgia for a rally ahead of two senate elections. president-elect joe biden and his wife spent thanksgiving apart from their extended family sharing a video message on twitter. >> it's a personal sacrifice that each of our families can make and should make to save somebody else's live. but it's also a shared sacrifice

area. we're at 35 right now in san jose and 47 in livermore. temperatures are kind of still all over the place because we've had breezy winds and the winds make temperatures higher so we're seeing that in parts of the east bay but the winds are calming down in the north bay and novato is 20 degrees cooler now compared to yesterday. i'll be tracking that with another update in a few mince. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? >> it's looking great, kari. we expect a light commute today but things have been different all year. we'll see what happens friday after thanksgiving. on the roadways the speed sensors show us green. the smaller fire on the peninsula not causing a problem. roadside fire and marsh off 101 there's a fire crew blocking the slow lane. eastbound 80 heading to the carquinez bridge, a crash went off the freeway. no major injuries and crews are taking care of it on a surface street. i want to double-check on that

stocks fell on wednesday taking a breather after the dow closed above 30,000 on tuesday. traders reacting to disappointing unemployment data with fewer people than expected filing for jobless benefits last week. trading volume is expected to be light today. a reminder the markets are only open for a half day close at 1:00 p.m. eastern. delta airlines will soon operate flights from the u.s. to italy that won't require passengers to quarantine when they arrive. the new flights will start on december 19th following approval from italy's government. passengers and crew on some delta flights will undergo a strict testing process. the operator of rome's airport says flights from jfk and newark airports, which are routes will also be included. you'll have to take a covid test up to 72 hours before departure date in addition to a rapid test

given at the airport. when you arrive in rome you'll ha to get another rapid test and one more before you fly back to the states. testing negative will allow u.s. citizens traveling for essential reasons to be exempt from the 14-day quarantine imposed on american travelers. some whole foods customers had to have a turkey free thanksgiving. they took to social media to complain their fresh turkeys smelled bad. amazon customer service says a small number of fresh market turkeys bought at whole foods didn't meet the company's quality standards. amazon stresses there was no food safety or health risk, but the affected customers across seven states in the south will be given a $50 amazon gift card credited to their account. kira and scott? >> turkeys that smell bad, yuck. thank you so much. 4:44. next on "today in the bay," the

distance. a clear morning. it is a gorgeous morning. chilly out there. we'll check in with meteorologist kari hall for a look at the forecast. similar to yesterday but it did turn out to be quite a beautiful day. >> it was. it was such a nice afternoon especially if you were outside. i went for a nice, long walk after thanksgiving dinner and we'll see more of the same weather today. just not as windy as this morning in walnut creek with temperatures in the low 40s. we're not going to see much of a warm-up until late this afternoon. another nice day to head out to the park. in san rafael expect it to be in the upper 40s through about 9:00 and then we're making it into the 50s. eventually reaching up to the low 60s as we head towards 2:00 and 3:00. as we go through all of our microclimates we'll see our morning start mostly in the 30s and 40s but then take a look at our lunch time temperatures. some low 60s like san jose and 62 in oakland.

62 in santa rosa and mid-60s there. we're feeling some seasonable weather and we're going to cool off quickly heading into the evening around sunset. make sure you have a jacket if you're going out for an outdoor dinner or going for a nice, long walk after dinner. we are going to see more dry weather in the forecast. unfortunately, there are no storm systems headed our way. it has been so dry and this may go down in the record books as one of the driest photographs we've ever had. and we're seeing the high fire danger for southern california. we'll talk about that in a minute. they are now creeping into a drought as we're seeing abnormally dry conditions. and, unfortunately, since we don't have any rain in the forecast, we are heading towards the potential of continuing our fire weather. our fire season if we get a high wind event because we are now seeing some widespread extreme and severe drought conditions here in the bay area.

and as we mentioned, of course, we don't have any rain, so we're going to continue with at least some mild weather. morning temperatures dipping back in the mornings into the upper 30s. but we'll see some highs in the mid-60s continuing through at least the end of next week. mike, you've been tracking the commute this morning. how is it looking? actually, i'm trying to find the commute. over to the bay area's famous golden gate bridge on the map as we look at our sensors. there's still a little slowing there. a live look, there are no issues across the bay. there was a crash eastbound 80 and that cleared. look at this over here, the altamont pass. there's no slowing by the arrow. that's how light the traffic is. kari did show you the camera in dublin, a good amount of traffic, 580 into the dublin interchange. we still have folks out there. be careful. mind those speeds. so far the commute is smooth. that's not a jinx. that's just a report. back to you guys. all right, mike, thanks. it is 4:50 right now.

a napa man is recovering in the hospital after he was trapped under a boulder. all new video shows the rescue. 48-year-old jason cook went hiking near calistoga looking for his missing drone monday afternoon. while he was hiking off the main trail a large slab of rock underneath him gave way. finally at 2:00 a.m. hours after maneuvering and digging himself out he was able to get his cell phone and call 911. chp officers located him and started a fire, keeping him warm until daylight when he was then airlifted to uc davis medical center. he suffered 11 broken ribs. he credits his helmet for saving his life during the fall. >> happening now southern california edison began shutting down power in los angeles county because of the threat of winds which is leading to fire danger. shutoffs could last throughout the day. several large fires in the state, of course, have been

linked to electrical equipment. the state assembly and a downtown arena when it kicks off its new session in december. this is an effort to try to limit coronavirus spread. the hope is the extra space and better air filtration at the sacramento kings golden one center will help lawmakers and staff keep safe. no guests will be allowed. you may recall earlier this year several lawmakers and legislative staff tested positive for the virus. a pasadena-based church is taking its fight against the state's covid restrictions to the u.s. supreme court. a cording to the southern california news group harvest rock church and harvest international ministry are seeking the high court's intervention ahead of this sunday's service. it comes after the church filed suit against the governor's office to allow them to worship indoors without restrictions and are currently awaiting appeal. the governor's office says numerous courts have upheld the

contest. the school said two players tested positive from covid-19 earlier in the week. another five were in quarantine for contact tracing. tomorrow san jose state will attempt to make history. the school's football team is 4-0. it will attempt to go 5-0 for the first time since 1939 when they take on boise state and it will be the first time the team will play in front of fans this is how the spartans looked, by the way, in 1939. this is how they look today. you can see the uniforms have changed a bit since then. and the photography technology. this is what sjsu stadium looked like back in 1939 and this is what it looks like today. you can see there have been a few upgrades. how cool to have that perspective. and just to drive the point home even more, 1939, the average cost of a car in the u.s. is only $750. a gallon of gas 10 cents. the average cost of a home $4,000.
