look, hi, al. >> i was looking all over for you. i couldn't find ya. >> can we come in? >> come on in. >> okay, good. >> we'll come in in just a bit. a lot of things were different last night because of the coronavirus. it was impacted, the lighting was, of course. >> of course. that's the top story this morning. officials are warning the nation is now in, quote, a very dangerous place. >> it is indeed. we have two reports for you. we're going to start with nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer, who is in los angeles. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: hi, guys, good morning. simply put, wednesday was devastating. the most deaths, infections, and hospitalizations this country has seen in a single day. now, our nation has just surpassed 14 million confirmed covid cases overall. here in california, in two weeks' time, the governor thinks across this state, we could be completely out of icu beds, and the situation on track to go from bad to worse and with some parts of the country considering

going into a lockdown again. >> reporter: this morning the u.s. reaching several new, unwanted records. 2,777 covid deaths, the most in a single day since the pandemic began. more than 200,000 covid infections, also the most in one day. right now, 100,000 americans are hospitalized with the virus. the white house coronavirus task force says the nation is in a very dangerous place. with many hospitals, testing sites, and morgues near or reaching capacity, officials caution the covid risk to all americans is at a historic high. unveiling this new hot spot map, the task force is directing health officials to take matters into their own hands if local policies do not reflect the seriousness of the current situation, and this stark warning, if you are over 65, or have significant health conditions, you should not enter any indoor public spaces where anyone is unmasked. you should have groceries and

medications delivered. in california, 11 surge facilities have now been identified. >> we're bursting at the seams with too many icu patients, too many patients that need oxygen. the projections suggest we're just in the beginning of this surge. >> reporter: but with more than 100 covid infections every minute, there's growing concern hospitals are overwhelmed and understaffed. as a nurse, janet siden dedicated her life to saving others but lost her own battle with covid-19. after millions of americans traveled for thanksgiving, the cdc is shortening the recommended quarantine period for anyone exposed to the virus from 14 days to 10 days if they show no symptoms. seven days if followed by a negative test. but some experts worry it's too little, too late. >> the reality is, december and january and february are going to be rough times. i actually believe they're going to be the most difficult time in

the public health history of this nation. >> reporter: nine months into a pandemic, growing fears that our worst days are yet to come. despite the record number of deaths, hospitalizations, and new infections, many are protesting the new restrictions going into place across the country. take a look at this scene on new york's staten island overnight. a large crowd gathering outside a popular bar after the owner was arrested for keeping open indoor dining. many demanding they be able to eat inside during a pandemic. savannah? >> miguel, thank you. now to the latest on how and when a vaccine could be distributed here in the u.s. federal agencies, states, and health care facilities are now gearing up ahead of a possible approval as soon as next week. nbc's stephanie gosk has got more on that. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the announcement from the british government that it had approved the pfizer vaccine probably came as a surprise to some people in this country.

the fda still considering its authorization. the agency says it is going line by line through the data, working day and night. they've scheduled public hearings on the vaccine for december 10th. the hope is that a transparent process will help bolster public confidence in the vaccine. pfizer's coronavirus vaccine now on the move in europe, with the uk set to receive the first doses next week. officials there urging patients amid an unprecedented public health mobilization effort. >> it will inevitably take some months before all the most vulnerable are protected. >> reporter: here in the u.s., all eyes are on the fda. the agency is still deciding whether to grant emergency use authorization to two vaccines. on december 10th, the public hearing will be held for pfizer's vaccine. moderna's is scheduled on the 17th. >> we want to make sure that there is a certain amount of

postmarked data, safety data, on people who have been vaccinated. that's why the fda process is moving a little more slowly than the other processes around the world. >> reporter: if and when the fda signs off, distribution could begin almost immediately. the defense department and hhs say the government is prepared to deliver several million doses to states within 24 hours. >> we are on track to be able to ship enough vaccine for 20 million americans before the end of the year. >> reporter: but many governors and state health officials warn that a lack of funding could slow the process down. new york's governor says vaccine distribution could cost his state nearly $1 billion. >> the federal government is not providing any funding to speak of for the states to do the vaccinations. who is supposed to pay for this? how am i supposed to do the distribution? >> reporter: in other places, there are concerns about storage, especially with pfizer's vaccine, which requires those sub arctic temperatures. >> there's only about ten different hospitals in the entire state that have that capability. >> reporter: tom willard's health care company in rural

kansas operates ten hospitals, seven clinics, and nursing homes. none of his facilities can store the vaccine. plus, he's worried about staffing during the vaccinations. >> i've only got a certain limited number of staff. i've got to make sure i have enough that can take care of all the patients we have. at the same time, i have to be sure they're getting the vaccine. >> reporter: with hospitalizations rapidly growing, it is a concern nationwide. >> so many questions about logistics, but also safety, right, steph? >> reporter: yeah. there are some outstanding questions, big ones, actually. one of them is if vaccinating people can transmit the disease. there's also question on whether or not the vaccine is safe for children or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. all those answers are going to come with more trials and more time, savannah. >> yeah, stephanie, it is a race against time. thank you very much. craig joins us now. we have the latest from washington. craig, morning. >> hoda, good morning to you. on capitol hill, lawmakers are now working on the next coronavirus stimulus bill. while at the white house,

president trump used a lengthy video to repeat unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud in the election. a message that puts him at direct odds with a key member of his administration. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker has more on that. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: hi, craig. good morning to you. president trump spoke out wednesday in a 46-minute video. it was not about the covid pandemic but also the election. again trying to undermine the results without providing any hard evidence. also this morning, those tensions between the president and his attorney general over the election could be growing. as president trump forges ahead with his push to overturn the results of the election, multiple sources are telling nbc news he's not ruling out the possibility of firing his attorney general bill barr, although there's no final decision. the news first reported by the "washington post" comes just 48 hours after barr publicly contradicted his boss, telling the "associated press," he has not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election. the "post" reporting the

president's anger at barr also centers around a doj probe into the origins of the russia investigation and the lack of a public report about that probe before last month's election. before the news broke, white house press secretary kayleigh mcenany was noncommittal about t the response. >> do you have confidence in bill barr? >> the president, if he has any personnel announcements, you'll be the first to know it. >> reporter: the president, for his part, doubling down on his unsubstantiated claims of widespread election fraud. >> this may be the most important speech i've ever made. >> reporter: in a 46-minute video, recorded without press in the room, edited and released by the white house. >> ultimately, i am prepared to accept any accurate election result, and i hope that joe biden is, as well. >> reporter: but this morning, growing fractures within the republican party, even top trump ally senator lindsey graham says it's time to show proof. >> to the trump legal team, you're making all these claims. you've got to prove it.

doing a video is not proof. you need to take these claims into a court of law and get relief. >> reporter: all this as efforts to pass another covid relief bill are seeing new signs of life on capitol hill. democratic leaders nancy pelosi and chuck schumer signaling support for a new $900 billion bipartisan proposal. the bill would restore an additional $300 in weekly unemployment benefits, provide $160 billion for state and local funding, and $16 billion for vaccine distribution. now, back here at the white house, one more note about attorney general bill barr. sources familiar with the discussions tell us multiple aides are trying to urge the president not to fire barr, and they do not believe a decision is imminent. craig? >> i'll take it, kristen. and a question for you, we're hearing some former presidents may be helping with the education effort, trying to persuade people to get vaccinated when the time comes? >> reporter: savannah, that's right. former presidents barack obama,

george w. bush, and bill clinton are all signaling they are open to publicly taking the forthcoming covid vaccine, in an effort to promote its use and instill confidence. this is what former president barack obama had to say on wednesday to sirius xm radio. take a listen. >> i promise you that when it is then made for pe then made for people who are less at risk, i will be taking it i may end up taking it on tv or having it filmed, just so that people know that, you know, i trust this science >> okay. >> and what i don't trust is getting covid. >> reporter: so there you go spokespeople for former presidents bush and clinton have also echoed that, saying they will get their vaccines on camera a recent poll found 42% of americans would not agree to get a vaccine, even if it were approved by the fda and top medical experts who have been trying to allay any fears,

stressing science has guided this process. >> we talked to bill gates next hour on this very issue, kristen. thank you very much. meantime, if you're thinking about booking travel in the new year, you could find yourself on board a 737 max after the faa lifted the grounding order following those two fatal crashes overseas well, now american airlines is trying to show confidence in the plane with a demonstration flight for members of the media. nbc's tom costello, who covers aviation for us, was on that short hop from dallas to tulsa and back tom, how'd it go >> reporter: smooth flight as you'd expect, american had updated their max to the faa required fixes now, every airline in the world is rushing to get those fixes on their planes, as well. they have another challenge, every airline has got to convince the passengers that this plane, the max, is as safe or safer than any other 737. no plane has ever been grounded for so long.

for 20 months, the 737 max has sat on airfields around the world. but on wednesday, this max took to the skies american airlines demonstration flight from dallas to tulsa. the airline eager to reassure passengers the plane is safe, after the faa approved major upgrades and lifted the grounding last month american's top max pilots say it's not to same plane involved in two overseas crashes killing 436 people. >> the main focus is that it does not happen again. redundancy is built in control is never taken away from the pilots. >> you control this side i control this side. >> reporter: technicians must upload a six-hour software fix to the mcas system, blamed for contributing to both crashes the faa also requiring wiring changes and new requirements for pilots who fly the max by the end of march, all 2,700 american airlines 737 pilots will be cross-trained on the max

and need to go through simulator training >> it is a really safe environment for pilots to get to practice and be trained on those events if they do occur in the real world, they know how to react to it. >> reporter: getting the plane updated is only part of the challenge. every airline must convince the flying public the max is safe. american will start with a single max passenger flight in late december and early january. miami to new york, round trip. passengers will be told in advance they're booked on a max, with the option to rebook. >> our promise to any customer that flies with us is if you get on the 737 max and you don't want to fly, we're going to allow you to change. >> reporter: but the families of the ethiopian crash victims called american's demonstration flight a media stunt writing, passengers should avoid this aircraft because others are safer, but still for boeing and the airlines, getting the max back in the air is critical to their financial recovery. it's a more fuel efficient

plane, and that's why the airlines want to fly it. plus, it's a lot of money sitting on tarmacs all over the world. to reiterate the point they were making, if you find out you're on the max, and it'll be on the boarding ticket, your email, you can rebook without a penalty. >> tom, you did mention that every single max pilot around the world will have to undergo simulator training before they can fly the plane again. i'd imagine that would take some time how long will that take? >> reporter: yeah, it's about a four-hour process. when you've got thousands of pilots, you know, 2,700 with american airlines alone, when you have thousands of pilots you have to cycle through the simulator, it is going to take some time. it'll take until the end of march for american other airlines have their own timelines. that'll slow down the process of getting the plane back in the air. >> all right necessary training though. all right, tom, thank you. let's get our first check of the weather. we switched positions. now, we're inside, and al is outside with our girlfriend, the rockefeller center christmas tree, who is looking fab. >> she looks spectacular, and

she is real. all right. let's show you though, how we are talking about the real possibility of a snowstorm in oklahoma and they had up to a foot of snow in parts of northwestern oklahoma, causing big, big problems and then going into parts of southern kansas and we are talking about blizzard-like conditions and a lot of accidents and up to a foot of snow there. this system is making its way to the east. the snow is ending in oklahoma but going on in kansas and a line of heavy storms and thunderstorms to the south of that through the mississippi river valley today. as the system is moving to the east, we are going to be looking at the severe storms in the florida panhandle tomorrow, and through the appalachians. this is interesting. the european model makes for a much stronger storm with power outages possible and faster moving and heavy rain from richmond to coastal new england, but then widespread heavy snow for the interior and the

>> let's get to it six people are unaccounted for this morning after a huge mud slide in southeast alaska. 9 feet of mud and trees covered parts of haines, alaska. dozens of people have been evacuated. the coast guard and mountain rescue personnel are involved ie the search effort. that mudslide was triggered by two days of rain there. two are facing reckless endangerment charges of boarding a flight for hawaii after testing positive for covid-19. when the couple arrived at san francisco international airport, they were instructed to isolate and not to travel. the couple and their 4-year-old child hopped on a flight to hawaii anyway, where they were met by police. if convicted, they could face up to a year in jail and $2,000 fine. a new warning for holiday shoppers get your online shopping done early. due to the pandemic and a record number of online sales, some delivery companies are being stretched to capacity. in fact, ups has imposed shipping limits on some of the

nation's largest retailers, including gap and nike that's according to the "wall street journal." the company told drivers not to pick up some packages on cyber monday ups says it will pick up the packages as more space becomes available. turning now to our series across the platforms of nbc news, focused on a race for a vaccine. from the very start, bill gates has devoted not only his time but also his money to finding a solution. >> that's right. as someone who has been involved in health initiatives around the world for years now, gates' foundation has contributed $450 million to the global covid-19 response. >> he famously warned about a global pandemic back in 2015 in a ted talk we first sat down back in april when we were just weeks into the pandemic and still figuring it out. now, with at least one vaccine approved in the uk already, and hopefully several green lights to come here in the u.s., we spoke again about where things stand and where they're going. it feels like we're in that

dreaded second wave, we're in that dark winter how are you looking at how we're handling there >> well, it's a paradoxical situation because things are getting worse right now. so the next four, five months actually look pretty grim unless we can really double down on our behavior but the tools, both treatment tools like antibodies and some of these amazing vaccines, will start to roll out. by the spring, those numbers will be big enough that, certainly in the united states, it'll start to change the numbers dramatically and, you know, we'll be headed back to normal. >> it's the classic, it's always darkest before the dawn, but we have it in our power to make it less dark. what would be your message to people >> well, the most impactful thing is associating with people less, wearing a mask wherever you might be exposed to someone outside your household, you

know, the projections show we could save, of the several hundred thousand lives projected to be lost in these months ahead, 50,000 of those would be saved if we had high mask compliance. >> the obvious bright spot here is the race for the vaccine. obviously, pfizer just had approval in the uk it's seeming to be on the verge of approval here in the u.s. moderna, another vaccine, hot on its heels. if someone had told you in a year, we would have a vaccine for a virus we didn't even know existed a year ago, what would you have thought >> it's unheard of even when we saw the antibody results to these vaccines, we didn't know how effective they would be it looks like almost all the vaccines are going to succeed. it is great science, great industrial manufacturing, great cooperation, even across

countries. so, you know, this is a war where we're all in it together. >> when you saw that 90% plus effective rate, did your jaw drop >> that was phenomenal that was absolutely at the high end of expectations. this is a great vaccine, so it's great for covid and it's great for other vaccines, as well. >> as exciting and promising as it is, do you have any hesitance or reservations about the way some of this information is rolling out? >> well, we are moving quickly, but the fda has a very clear review process i would say they've avoided being pressured to cut corners on that. some of the earlier things, you know, where they approved hydroxychloroquine, or the way the plasma stuff went wasn't them at their best with the vaccine here, they've been super strong.

>> do you have faith in our government's ability to immunize americans on this scale? >> well, it's going to be tricky, and it's kind of weird that the cdc, throughout this epidemic, hasn't had the visible role that you would have expected a lot of these things delegated to the states, it will not be what it should be, but, overall, i do think we'll get it out. it's just the federal government has abdicated on many things during this pandemic. >> you're not one for politics, but that's a pretty serious indictment the federal government has abdicated on some of its fundamental responsibilities in a public health crisis. >> yeah, the federal government has way more resources than the states punting it to the states means it won't be perfect, but it'll get done. >> would you have expected the u.s. to have done better in a pandemic >> dramatically. >> do you blame the president

for that >> i think the administration as we do the postmortem, that there is going to be a lot of things like confused messaging, lack of leadership that will fall on the executive branch, and that the next time we will do a lot better. >> lieutenant general who is in charge of some of the distribution said that by the end of june, 100% of americans who want a covid vaccine will have it. does that timeline seem doable or overly optimistic >> no, i'd say that things -- if we handle the logistics and messaging well, that should be achievable >> are you worried about widespread skepticism or reluctance to get the vaccine? >> well, if this was like measles and we had to get up to, like, 95%, i'd be very worried as it is, we only have to get up to probably 70%. >> of people inoculated? >> yeah, people with the vaccine to drop the numbers down dramatically

hospitalized. the numbers are difficult to grasp but have never been this high. it comes as the cdc shortens the recommended quarantine time for anyone exposed to the virus from 14 days to 10 days if they show no symptoms. it can be further reduced to seven days if that's followed by a negative test. still, experts say the overall outlook, especially on the heels of these numbers, is grim. >> the reality is december, january, and february are going to be rough times. i actually believe they're going to be the most difficult time in the public health history of this nation. >> reporter: meantime, while pfizer's vaccine is set to roll out in europe next week, officials here in the u.s. are urging patience, as fda reviews emergency authorization. authorities say they are working seven days a week to analyze data. another vaccine made by moderna could soon also follow. savannah, back to you. >> miguel, thank you. the covid crisis has had a

dramatic impact on the nfl, sidelining players, clearing stands, and disrupting schedules. but commissioner roger goodell says he does not expect the league to move games into a quarantine bubble. nbc's sam brock joins us now from miami with more. hey, sam, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. you know, we have seen this bubble format work for other professional sports. it is not what commissioner roger goodell envisions for the nfl. the nfl, so far, has made it through the first 12 weeks of the regular season, but this last week has easily been the most trying. the baltimore ravens, pittsburgh steelers game was postponed three times, hoda, because of positive tests for ten consecutive days for at least one ravens player. on top of that, the denver broncos couldn't field a quarterback because players
