you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at the commute with mike in a bit. kari hall with a look at the forecast. a little cool to start the morning, kari. yeah, another cool morning, but it will shape up to be a nice and warm afternoon. and we're still tracking those big breakers along the coastline again for today with the sunshine, and you'll notice it will be slightly cooler as the breezy winds start to pick up over the next couple of days. finally some rain in the weekend forecast. we'll talk more about that as we take a look at our highs for today. once again slightly cooler but still well above normal for this time of year. we'll talk more about this and the rain coming up. mike, any issues for early morning commuters? no, in fact, time to check for issues like the wiper blade conditions because we'll watch for kari's forecast and changes. very light volume out of the altamont. no slowing through the

tri-valley. over to the east bay, the bay bridge and the approach to the maze all moving at speed. a little bit of fog shows up on our road weather index. not a concern for most of our drivers. we begin with the rising numbers in the south bay. dr. sara cody gave supervisors an update yesterday. she says things have gotten worse since she last addressed the public and the latest surge is nowhere near over. >> the recent cases, some not even populated on our dashboard, likely reflect the surge from thanksgiving we anticipated, but the contributions of that surge is still not even reflected in the numbers that you see. >> some hospitals are now at capacity including san jose's general medical center but it still accepts patients through its emergency room, and the number of patients there is fluid because some only require short stays. new this morning, the national restaurant association

is confirming 110,000 restaurants have closed across the u.s. since the pandemic began. now closer to home one san francisco restaurant says he wants his money back from the state. under california's new stay-at-home order the blue line is back to takeout only and minimal staffing. the bills for state and local licensing keep mounting. the restaurant owner says as long as he can't fully operate these payments should be returned or forgiven not deferred. >> please forgive these permitees and licensees. >> a lawsuit on behalf of all the restaurants in california against the state and against various counties who have kept their money in order to get the money back. >> in the meantime in los angeles legal challenge to the county health department's ban on outdoor dining has a judge demanding county officials prove it contributes to the spread of covid-19. new details several bay area

counties now have a new plan to limit panic buying during shelter in place. the solution, allow more people in grocery stores. the call for reports alameda, contra costa and marin county stores can allow up to 35% capacity instead of 20%. california groceries association says the lower limit would cause long lines and panic buying. san francisco is at 20% and santa clara has a 25% cap. with change brewing in washington struggling transit agencies and big cities everywhere suddenly have new hope. they will joint by make a call for new financial life lines. later this morning b.a.r.t.'s president will join a national group of transit leaders to call for more federal assistance. b.a.r.t. and muni like most agencies are warning of massive job cuts if new stimulus falls through. the latest congressional plan does provide relief but until ridership gets back to pre-pandemic levels it will be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. an unusual phenomenon apparently going on at lake

tahoe. between the added health restrictions and limited visitors allowed, "the chronicle" reporting more people are heading to tahoe's back country. let's all cross our fingers there's lots of snow that soon arrives. once it does locals have a message for anyone craving a back country visit, be safe and prepared and know what to do in the event of an avalanche. i don't think the snow is at that level whatsoever right now. any snow in our forecast, which means rain here, kari? we could see some snow this weekend. we're looking forward to that as the new weather system comes in. we've had these dry weather systems coming in pushing up high waves and we're still looking at those big breakers today along the coastline as the dangerous surf advisory continues for much of the bay area coastline we could still have those waves up to 25 feet today but most of them up to about 20 feet with the rogue and sneaker waves still expected through about 3:00 today.

turnover survey tracks job listings. doordash is set to make its market debut today. pricing its ipo at $102 a share. that's well above the expected range and values the company at nearly $39 billion. doordash now controls 50% of the u.s. market and customers have placed more than 900 million orders. that said, it has yet to report an annual profit. doordash will trade on the new york stock exchange. and red box has added on demand tv shows and movies to its ad supported tv service. hundreds of titles are available to watch now and more will be added each week. you can watch the free shows and movies on ios and android devices and roku and disney displays. red box rolled out a free service earlier this year. marcus and laura, hard to keep track of all the different services and the options. yes, yet another option for you. >> i know.

starting to warm up as we see the sunrise and some cooler temperatures for this afternoon. let's start out first in the south bay as we're looking at a high of 68 degrees in milpitas and 70 in gilroy. for the east bay we're looking at highs in the upper 60s for the most part, up to about 67 degrees in concord as well as fremont. along the coastline it's going to be just as warm as we'll see temperatures in the mid to upper 60s and going through the forecast we'll see some temperatures in the 60s in san francisco as we've seen some of the mild weather continuing there. dry conditions. 64 downtown and 67 today in sonoma. as we look at what's coming down the line, this is what i was hoping for, that the little rain we were expecting actually turns out to be a little bit more and the models are getting onboard showing a little bit more rain for the weekend. if we're going to be safe at home we might as well be watching some rainfall, and it looks like it starts to move in

as early as saturday with some scattered showers moving in first to the north bay, the south bay may not see much of that but then we'll see another round of rain coming in on sunday and, yes, talking about some snow in the sierra. we're going to see that mostly clear out by early on monday. but a nice little round of rain and the models are showing the potential of some spots especially further to the north getting up to an inch of rain, but most of us will get about a tenth to a quarter of an inch, so it's not a huge, significant storm. it's definitely better than all of the dry weather we've seen as we are going to see also a big cooldown heading into the weekend with highs only reaching into the upper 50s in the inland areas. coming off those 70s that we had to start out the week in san francisco also will have some upper 50s after today, some cooler weather moves in. we'll be watching out for the weekend rain chances. how is it looking for the commute? kari, i think you have the name, we'll call it working on it wednesday until we get a better name.

commute is looking good. a great example, no major problems. in fact, no major traffic flow. we just have -- now this looks like a trickle but it's a steady flow. once folks narrow to half the lanes on the span it givets a little more crowded. the map shows you where that is. i labelled it with bay bridge at the bottom of your screen. as we zoom out, a little fog highlighted in the amber blob on the right side over in rio vista. noting that it's there and we are monitoring those conditions around the bay as well. the rest of the bay at speed. the san mateo bridge we had an earlier crash at foster city that is cleared from the off ramp but there may be activity there. do watch west 92 as you come down the decline for highway 101. back to you. thank you very much, mike. it's 4:48 right now. developing now crews have controlled at least two small brushfires near los angeles. that's in part thanks to diminishing santa ana winds. the fire burned over 15 acres. more power shutoffs are still

possible due to the wildfire threat in l.a. county. governor newsom reportedly looking at the low end of next year's projected tax windfall. government analysis earlier this year $26 billion. the "l.a. times" reports newsom now believes it's about half of that, $15 billion. "the times" reporting councilmembers are starting that tough task of painful budget cuts. right now the plan includes a lot of furloughs and draining city reserves trying to hold off on more plans including job cuts to the police department. now to a live look at sfo this morning where the airport is recognized for its safety measures to protect people from covid. sfo earned the covid-19 health accreditation from the airport international, the first in the u.s. to require a facemask at all times in its terminals. plus, sfo was the first to offer rapid on site testing for employees. the other airports that also received accreditation are charles m. schultz in sonoma

welcome back. 4:52 for you that morning. the nhl and san jose sharks appear to be closer to a return to the ice. tsn reporting the framework in place for a 56-game season that may start january 15th. the sharks may have to do some serious shuffling. abbreviated training camps may start after christmas. at that point the stay-at-home order would still be in effect. other teams are facing similar predicaments. something good to share with you this morning. a new york family sharing sounds of inspiration and hope from inside their living room one day at a time. >> that's right. while sheltering inside due to the pandemic they decided to put the unexpected time together to good use.

the hockman clan dubbing themselves as the quarantined quartet. professional musicians who own guitar academy in manhattan came up with the idea shortly after being dealt some setbacks. >> we had to shut our manhattan studio and move everything to remote classes. we are also professional musicians and all those performances we had in april, may, june all got postponed and canceled, pushed. >> the family has been strumming away on their guitars uploading a one-minute video clip from their practice sessions to social media every night. >> before the pandemic honestly we would never be able to play together as a family. we would play maybe once a week. we only had about two songs that sounded decent. and now at this point we have over 20 songs, a full repertoire. >> after being featured on instagram the family's page is now strumming up a lot of attention. they've been featured on several
