"today in the bay" starts right now. good thursday morning to you, thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that commute in just a bit, but, first, vianey in for kari this morning with a look at that forecast for us. >> hey, good morning. i'm in where we expect to see the temperatures in the 30s and 40s and possibility of seeing some rain which we definitely need. not a lot of clouds but an increase in cloud cover as we head in towards this afternoon and a closer look at the headlines that we're monitoring for today. partly cloudy conditions and an increase in winds. possibly gusts upward of 45 and i'll have a closer look at that in just a few minutes. mike? >> all right. well, maybe highway but no warning from chp golden gate

bridge. live look where things look clear and easy right now coming towards us and reports of lane restrictions on the north side and look at the map. you see a little slowing. the overnight road from spencer almost to where we saw with the camera and almost to the south tower. that may be a factor for folks. the crew will be an issue as they clear more than it is right now. everything else looks pretty good as far as the traffic flow goes and no major problems getting down towards the rest of the bay. we'll talk about what we see in highway 17 coming up. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. the moment the nation is waiting for. the u.s. on the brink of approving a coronavirus vaccine. in just about 90 minutes, the fda is scheduled to begin its meeting which could signal an end of the covid pandemic. an independent panel of experts will review and make its recommendation. "today in the bay" the hospitals prepare to receive the first

doses. >> reporter: ready for the first shipment of the covid-19 vaccine. discuss recommending the pfizer vaccine to the fda. the heels come on another country giving the vaccine a green light. >> at last, we have a reason to feel optimistic and excited about leading the lives we led pre-covid. >> reporter: the united states is expected to be next. advisory committee includes experts from stanford university. it will be streamed live for anyone to watch and there will be sections discussing the vaccine's safety, efficacy and distribution. >> they have lots of freezers because we have them as part of research labs and they've been freed up. >> reporter: dr. peter said they are prepared to store the vaccine which requires two shots 21 days apart. one of seven california hospitals in line for the first

doses. he expects rapid fda approval and delivery of 1,000 doses tuesday. front line medical workers are first in line. >> fema, state department, labor and delivery and when you think about those sites, it's not just clinicians, doctors, nurses, but also custodial staff, people who are resident students. >> reporter: there won't be enough to vaccinate all medical staff right away. he says with cases and deaths rising, getting the shot will provide him some hope. >> i'm sure i will feel very emotional when i get it myself because it really is a silver lining in the face of all of this darkness. now beside's pfizer's vaccine three companies coming up with their own. hearing is set for a week from today.

johnson & johnson also developing a vaccine. it expects that file to file for fda approval in january. and the oxford astrazeneca vaccine is currently in phase three clinical trials. two standard doses 62% effective but people who mistakenly receive a regular dose that vaccine was 90% effective. because of that discrepancy, the it will likely take longer to be approved by the fda. the u.s. confirmed nearly 223,000 new cases yesterday alone. that's a new record even more staggering, more than 3,100 people nearly confirmed dead. now, it's the most u.s. has seen in one day and the first time surpassing that 3,000 mark. statewide the numbers also setting new records. california confirming nearly 31,000 new infections bringing its overall total to more than 1.4 million.

nearly 200 people were just added to the state's death toll. >> pretty amazing numbers there, staggering. a follow up. san francisco schools this week radically overhauled the elementary school assignment process. this is a process parents afor elementary schools. much more order to it and it will be zone based. the families will be limited in theal skoo aal schools they ca. critics have long complained the old process was a free for all lacking diversity. spending some time outside playing and i'm sure a lot of kids want to do that. the question is, will the weather cooperate. vianey, how is it looking for outside recess time today? >> it looks like we might get a little breezy especially depending on where you live and an increase in cloud cover and no rain just yet. however, it's looking like a

better chance for it this weekend. this is where we're monitoring for this morning. cool 30s and 40s to start the morning we want to bundle up. by the afternoon, it is going to be cooler. we are heading towards a cooling trend later this afternoon. so you may want to take some layers that you could put on or take off throughout the afternoon. as we head in towards the day. here's a look at your daytime highs to give you a better idea. 62 degrees in san jose and 51 in ocean and san francisco 58 and santa rosa 65 and napa 64 and livermore we're looking at 64 degrees. so, that high-wind advisory does go into effect at 8:00 a.m. i'll have a close look at that in a few minutes. mike? >> all right, vianey, we'll keep an eye out. on the wind side, on the road side, it's a breeze. we look out the maps and one issue that is pop up southbound 17 at highway 9. just past highway 9 the sensors turned to yellow a few moments ago. one lane blocked by an earlier crash that is seeing more

we'll track that. back to you. good morning. i'm rahel solomon from cnbc. stock futures open lower and stocks fell on wednesday as tech shares struggled and traders weigh fiscal stimulus and all three averages touched fresh intra day records. spacex launched and the test was successful until the very last moment when the starship rocket exploded on impact as it attempted to land. that said, spacex ceo elon musk shared his enthusiasm tweeting, mars here we come. samsung announced a massive 110 inch version of its wall tv. like other oversized displays this model is pretty fabricated and can be installed like any traditional tv. it launched in korea and will launch globally in the first quarter of 2021.

43 degrees, but our temperatures are expected to start to dip down into the 30s, similar to the north bay right now at 39 degrees but we are monitoring some pretty big changes ahead. closer look at doppler radar and zoom this out to the pacific because you can see the approaching system. it is setting up for a decent amount of moisture that has very much needed and appreciated once it arrives here in the bay area. let's take a look at your microclimate highs for the afternoon. mid 60s for today. another thing to keep in mind is it's going to be a little bit cooler as we enter a cooling trend and advisory taking effect at 8:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. right now we're expecting to keep the high wind advisory especially for the mountain areas and the coastal areas up through the north bay. let's take a look at some of those wind gusts. what we can expect. i'll push this timeline forward. you can see the wind 15 plus miles per hour getting even gustier by the afternoon.

30 plus for san francisco and santa rosa which is why that wind advisory is in effect for those areas. surface map we can see the approaching system heading into friday night and look at the snow in the sierra where you get a little widespread rain heading into saturday and on sunday we get another area of really good moisture heading into sunday evening. so, how much rain are we expecting to get out of this system? that is a great question as we inch forward saturday and sunday. you can see about 0.34 through the fremont area and by sunday the north bay could see one inch, nearly two inches. half an inch in fremont and san jose about .34 through there and sierra snow definitely on the map between 12 and 18 inches. a good weekend to look forward to some much-needed rain hopefully elevating that fire danger around the bay area. mike, i'll send it over to you.

due to improving weather conditions they're having down there in southern california. businesses in the east bay are defying covid-19 restrictions. danville police chief is urging them to follow the law while county leaders say bigger fines may be on the way. >> jodi hernandez has more on why the fines might be worth it. >> reporter: people are going out to eat in danville. most restaurants are reopened outdoor dining despite the county health ord. >> we have not had any cases of covid and none of the restaurants i know have had it. >> reporter: he already lost five bay area restaurants during the pandemic and his house is in foreclosure and on the brink of bankruptcy. >> i'm physically, mentally and emotionally broke down. i lost everything. >> we have a great deal of understanding for the position they're in. >> reporter: while he
