this monday morning. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm cierra johnson in for laura. kari hall is tracking our forecast. good morning to you, kari. good morning. good to see you, cierra. let's start out as we are seeing a lot of changes as we start out our new week. we've been watching the rainfall over the weekend. the rain is out of here and now king tides are rolling in. we're going to be watching out for that and the potential of flooding along the coastline as well as some rain returning by the middle of the week. let's check out our high temperatures for today as we will have a cool day, at least we will get some sunshine as we reach into the upper 50s, tracking this along with the breezy winds and talk more about the high waves and potential coastline flooding coming up in a few minutes. how is it looking for the early morning commute? >> we had the results of what you're talking about, the wet roadways yesterday and now the map.

the road is dominated by green sensors and that's great stuff. taking you to the circled area at the top, the benicia bridge. wind advisory issued there. around the maze scatters of flooding reported on the roadways. i just left them to show you that and a steady shot of the bay bridge. no wind advisories here. back to you, marcus. thank you, mike. i'm here in the covid crisis center. overnight the first vials distributed to hospitals and other medical facilities across the country. in chicago the medical center will be the center of a large scale administration of the vaccine. jay gray reports from downtown, the hospital there in downtown chicago with a closer look at what comes next. >> reporter: as the first vials of coronavirus vaccine roll out excitement and emotion. >> i'm still crying, sorry. hope is on the way.

>> reporter: on the way to hospitals like rush university medical center in chicago, the main lobby now a vaccination center where the staff will be able to administer 1,000 doses or more a day. >> this is a vaccination effort that has never before been seen or undertaken in any manner. >> reporter: frontline health care workers will be the first in line, the beginning of what doctors and nurses hope will be months of knock lagss here inoculations. >> we're starting down the getting everyone vaccinated pathway and hopefully seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for the covid pandemic. >> reporter: for that to happen experts say 70% to 80% of the population needs to be vaccinated, but there are many still concerned about the safety of a medicine created and approved so quickly. >> i know a period of time to making sure vaccines work so a little worried about that. >> reporter: but doctors and

nurses say they want to ease those fears. >> i'm happy to be an example for others, to show them it's okay to get this vaccine, that it is important to get it. >> reporter: vital to finding a way back to normal. >> reporter: jay gray, nbc news, chicago. and for the fourth straight day new cases in california topped 30,000. that brings our statewide total to more than 1.5 million. the positivity rate is 10.4%, up 4% in the last two weeks alone. 6% of the state's new cases came from santa clara county. right now the icu beds, only 45 of them, available. but in los angeles if you see los angeles a record with more than 4,000 people hospitalized for covid-19. more than one-fifth of patients

in l.a. are in intensive care units. leaders in contra costa county's largest district are expected to follow through to shell of reopenings. leaders were planning to start a partial reopening on january 11th. our recent letter to parents indicates they now expect to re-evaluate everything on january 13th. that decision is supposed to be approved at tonight's meeting. and happening today city leaders in lafayette will consider restarting a relief program to help struggling businesses. the lafayette business assistance program provides access to state and federal funding. the program started back in april and secured more than $1.5 million. 82 local businesses and ten nonprofits received aid. new census data sheds new light on how many people are struggling to make it in the bay. our data showing landlords are struggling as well. census numbers from october find more than one in five californians had little to no confidence in their ability to

pay that november rent. at the same time apartment owners in parts of the bay are really seeing 20% higher vacancy rates. rents, meanwhile, are down, up to 25%. and happening today bores of the caldecott tunnel will be closed for maintenance. they will alternate tonight through 10:00 and continue wednesday morning at 5:00. signs will be posted to direct drivers. people are asked to expect delays and allow extra travel time. happening now high surf advisories in effect. waves of 16 to 25 feet are being seen in some areas off the coast. king tides are also returning to the embarcadero and san francisco. the port authority is putting up some cones and tape to make sure people stay safe and, kari, a storm is expected to pass through the area. yeah, we are going to see another storm come in on wednesday. we are still looking at the

potential of more of those high waves as we are in between these storm systems moving through. as we look at how high the waves will be once again, we could see some of the breakers reaching up to 25 feet, but most of the waves will come in up to about 15 to 18 feet and coming in every 16 to 20 seconds. we are going to continue to watch out for those long period swells and you want to make sure you're staying well away from the water. water temperatures at 52 and 53 degrees. as far as the air temperatures. we're reaching into the mid-50s. overall a cool and breezy day, but we will have some sunshine. we'll talk more about what's ahead in the forecast for the rest of the bay area coming up. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? kari, it's looking great. i'll give you the example, our view of the golden gate bridge where the view is clear right now and no advisories from chp. i'll give you the note as we look at the map. the speed sensors traveling on the marin side heading north

background. i don't know. let's ask meteorologist kari hall. kari, how is it looking for us today? yes, those are clouds. we had a lot of rain over the weekend, and it was so good to see. we were playing board games and watching movies. i hope you enjoyed it, too, as we are going to take a look at our rainfall totals from over the weekend. the win earp was mt. tam. check that out. over 3 inches of rain there. and in the santa cruz mountains we had almost two and a half inches of rain there. and then checking out mt. diablo an inch and three quarters. good in the berkeley hills, almost an inch and a half. san francisco measuring over an inch. and we also had some decent rainfall totals elsewhere, in the valleys castro valley. the same in santa rosa and san martin almost three-quarters of an inch there and half an inch in san jose. today it's going to be dry. sunshine with temperatures

reaching into the upper 50s. still going to be cool but nice to get that sun when we know we have more rain coming our way. by the middle of the week another quick round of some showers. we'll be watching out for some more rain chances for the weekend but it looks like as of now a lot of those rain chances will be drying up as they approach but we will be watching out for that. we could see another good round of rain late wednesday night and thursday, the potential of getting over an inch of rain in ukiah, most of us a quarter inch of rain, and it could be as high as half inch of rain in a few spots. as we go through the forecast, we are clear today, clear tomorrow. rain moving in late on wednesday, continuing into thursday morning and then rolling out of here with some dry weather to return for the rest of the week. we are going to stay cool but this is about normal for this time in december with highs in the upper 50s and low 60s. san francisco will see more of

windy conditions, evacuation orders were lifted yesterday afternoon. oakland's archdiocese has reportedly quietly settled a lawsuit. the civil suit tied to allegations made by a former m seminarian in livermore. church leaders settled the suit for $3.5 million. the pastor tied to the allegations has been removed, but the church insists the pastor never committed any wrongdoing and prosecutors never filed charges. they say the pastor is on leave for other reasons. electors across the country will gather to cast their vote for president. the electoral college is expected to formally elect joe biden as president. former bay area congressman pete mccloskey is one going to sacramento to vote today. he says he'll probably be the oldest living electorate. the former republican congressman is 93 years old. president-elect joe biden is expected to deliver remarks on

the vote tonight. and happening today a san francisco advocacy group is celebrating the 75th anniversary of establishment of the united nations. they are honoring senator dianne feinstein receiving the light unto the nations award for san francisco and her global leadership. during that virtual event people from all over the world will join lighting the menorah and discussing the importance of diplomacy. that event is scheduled to start tonight at 6:00. and california's attorney general is wading into the controversy surrounding two defiant strip clubs. the clubs are located in san diego and refused to comply with stay-at-home orders. arguing it's freedom of expression and protected by the first amendment. a local judge agreed, outraging city and county leaders. on friday xavier becerra told the club they're violating the order barring social gatherings. another hearing is expected this

week. new details for you that morning, californians are signing up for covid-19 exposure alert system but health leaders say they need more. in less than a week 4 million people signed up for the alert system. ca notified people. health leaders say for the alert system to effectively work more people need to sign up. and as covid-19 cases and deaths continue to surge, the enrollment period for covered california is being extended. there are more than 1.2 million californians that are uninsured but could be eligible for assistance, financial assistance, that is. so covered california is giving people until december 30th to sign up. health care coverage could start a few days later on january 1st, but people should and need to know that to pay their first bill they must do that for their coverage to take effect. sidelined -- next on "today in the bay," the latest college
