tonight starting in the north bay and making it on through. as we start out this morning it is partly cloudy. we'll have a dry most of the day. the rain moves in and we're back to the dry weather. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? it's looking light and dry as well. monitoring 280 at farm hill. just off the roadway. a smooth drive on the right side. no delay at the toll plaza. we did have metering lights on yesterday. we'll track that again today. laura? >> thanks so much, mike. >> a live look in marin. the county out of icu beds. the news came down last night.

plans are already in place to get some help from other nearby counties. the bed shortage not much better in some parts of the bay area. santa clara and solano are below the 15% threshold. san mateo is just teetering at the edge. the bay area is teetering above the 15% threshold meaning any surge in patients would trigger a stay-at-home order. of course most bay area counties have already enacted strict measures. for people who live in long-term health facilities, they will have to wait at least several more days. bob redell is live in concord. talk to us about the holdup here. >> reporter: there's been some confusion. we expected people who live in nursing homes to receive their

vaccines this week along with doctors and nurses but the cdc says they won't receive their first dose until next week or the week after. as the "usa today" reports the reason is a lot of those facilities opted into the program that relies on walgreens and cvs to administer the doses, and that program doesn't start until december 21st. here this concord late they are morning some other doctors and nurses will receive their first round. contra costa county has received close to 10,000 doses so far, all of which will go to frontline doctors and nurses. the first of their two shots. we were live out there yesterday morning, if you'll recall. another five at zuckerberg san francisco, across the bay. 100 to 150 more will receive their first dose starting today.

covid at home. the test is made by an australian company. here is how it works. you swab the inside of your nose, then you add a few drops of liquid to the sample and place it onto a small plastic device. the results show up on an app in just about 20 minutes. it costs about $30. it will be available next month over the counter. you don't need a prescription. a great resource to keep up with the pandemic and our coverage. you can find ongoing updates and vaccines as well as testing. just head over to nbcbayarea.com. new overnight santa rosa police are investigating an apparent murder/suicide. a woman was found shot. they later found the gunman dead.

they're not saying how the two are connected. now to an nbc bay area exclusive. terrifying moments for a retired san jose police captain. bullets fly in his direction after a man tried to steal his car in the willow glen neighborhood. he says he walked away from his car while it was running to drop something off at a neighbor's. that neighbor saw a man jump from a nearby car and jump in. the retired captain ran after him, and he got out. here is what happened next. >> the guy jumps out of the passenger side, levels an automatic rifle and shoots up at us. we can't let the bad guys win. >> video shows what appears to be the suspect on the hood of the getaway car. police caught up with the car and arrested the suspects inside. >> renters concerned about making it in the bay are organizing a car caravan this afternoon. struggling tenants are worried they may soon be evicted in

to get rain once again in the bay area. if you're about to head out the door you can leave the umbrella at home. it's not coming until overnight tonight. as we look at our live camera and our temperatures that will start out cool, some upper 30s this morning. we'll make it into the mid-50s. the rain will be coming in late tonight after seeing the high temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. a few spots will reach the low 60s for today and for the north bay, you'll start to see that rain starting to come in this evening but some of the heavier downpours will be shortly before midnight and moving into the rest of the bay area as we go towards tomorrow morning. we'll talk more about how much rain we can expect coming up. what's the update on the commute? kari, we're looking at changes even as we speak. heading north are the taillights and that construction project.

right know at 5:12 i am tracking a new round of rain set to move in late tonight into early tomorrow morning, but most of the day will be dry. we'll start to see those clouds moving in and cooler temperatures today. we'll talk how much rain to expect and how much rain the sierras will get. and i talked about how light the bay bridge backup is but i thought i would show you as well

in case the word light didn't convey the message. it's headlights. a good drive across oakland into san francisco. we'll give you a bigger look coming up. happy wednesday. a lot of people are realizing how much facebook knows about them after apple made changes to its iphone operating system and added privacy information about each app in the app store. app apple's list runs more than 650 words in how it can track you including your location, your exercise data and it can track you across apps. for instance if you buy something using a different app facebook may still know about it. people are posting about it on line. the user scrolls through all the ways facebook tracks you. nothing is new and facebook as been fairly up front about it

and you can turn off most of those trackers but people don't. apple is just making it ease why are for people to discover what's happening. make sure you're running the latest ios on your phone and go to the app store and search for facebook. the u.s. government and pfizer are in talks to secure more doses. the white house it turned down pfizer's offer for more vaccines earlier this year. the u.s. will have enough to vaccinate half of us by june counting pfizer and moderna. half of us by the middle of next year. mckenzie scott may not be a household name yet but should be. the ex-wycife of jeff bezos has given away $4 billion to food banks and others. the irony and scott herself

including the sock, after they started stepping on the animals. it was a little bathroom. >> i like that. >> we're all getting a little stir crazy during this pandemic but i love the light that we can find from it. >> exactly. >> all right, thanks, scott. actually yesterday scott was talking about oracle ceo larry ellison moving to hawaii and the island of lanai that he essentially owns. it's apparently a small part of a larger trend. a new report from apartment list says honolulu topped the list of searches for leases of six months or fewer and the most searches came from san francisco, san jose and los angeles. the jump over to hawaii. many potential renters are now working from home so why not do it on an island, marcus? >> not a bad idea. tom cruise reportedly let his covid concerns be heard lau loud and clear on the set of the

i will survive and we will make it through. what will 2021 hold? >> hopefully some more rain. and happier days. >> yeah, that's what i'm talking about. let's wash all of this away. let's get a look at storm ranger radar as we get a look at a dry weather pattern. we'll see things changing as we go into tonight. a new round of rain. we can see the storm system to the north of us and the rain off the coast. it will first start out in the north bay and work its way across the rest of the bay area tonight. i'm taking you throughout the day. mostly clouds but here we are stopping it at 11:00 when we see heavy rain approaching santa rosa and then starting to make its away further to the south as we go to midnight, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 in the morning.

you can see the rain passing by. some of the heavier downpours will weaken. we will see the dry weather returning. the roads may still be wet as you go out for your commute. what may come out of the clouds, it's possible that parts of the north bay could get over half an inch of rain and then for the east bay, oakland, dublin, closer to half an inch as well as san francisco, less down the peninsula and the south bay. that's a pretty good soaking. the possibility they're looking at 5 to 9 inches of snow which is enough to make the roads slick but not the heavy snowfall we need. we turn back to below average rainfall as we go to the end of 2020 into the start of the new year. as we get a look at our

well, believe it or not, it's been five years since san francisco general was renamed after facebook ceo mark zuckerberg. the san francisco supervisors are suddenly against it. the board yesterday passed a resolution condemning the renaming citing perceived transgressions. zuckerberg and his wife donated $75 million to establish a trauma center and the hospital

is proud of the affiliation. the vote is symbolic and does not force the hospital to do anything. >> indoor dining is off the menu in new york city. it will shut down the next two weeks as covid cases surge. some fear they won't be able to survive the latest shutdown. florida's governor vowing to keep restaurants open and is ensuring hospitality workers will stay employed. now to something good. an innovative way to support restaurants and bars. transforming a van into a mobile dining room. the couple started dining out back in october. they have a date night once a week where they just park in the restaurant parking lot and have the food delivered right to their van. they are hoping to bring some awareness to the struggling businesses and restaurants. that's adjusting to the situation.

one hospital forced to adjust. what are they doing, cierra? >> reporter: good morning. this is one of those hospitals where there are no icu beds. the health officials and local leaders warned the surge after thanksgiving have put strains on hospitals. reporting zero beds in marin county. icu beds at marin, kaiser permanente, san rafael medical center and novato. it isn't just marin county seeing low icu availability, some counties are under or approaching that 15% availability with solano county at 11%. statewide much of the same with many regions reaching their covid cases rise.

greater sacramento, san joaquin valley and southern california are all below 15% and governor newsom announced changes to help health care workers and doctors. it will change how they adapt to staffing. >> during our critical staffing shortages we now have a seven not a ten day quarantine for health care workers and emergency response and social workers exposed as long as they test negative on day five or later. >> reporter: and changing guidelines regarding how many nurses are allowed to care for at a single time from two patients to three patients to accommodate the shortage in staff and growing number of patients. there is good news related to the number of vaccines. 1,950 doses of the pfizer

vaccine are expected to arrive. next week 1,900 doses are expected to arrive of that moderna vaccine. good news on that front. here hospitals are strapped for both staff and beds and i've been doing some research in other parts of the state they've been transporting sicker patients to counties where there is an availability of beds. those numbers could fluctuate as the days go on we're live in marin county. so here is the concern, the daily new cases here in the bay area. on august 16 there were about 1,400 new cases and that was the height of the summer surge. look where we are now. on monday more than 3,500 new cases, almost triple the numbers during the summer.

for many the vaccine cannot come soon enough. workers were among the first in the bay area to get the vaccine yesterday. another treatment for the next ten months and they say they are ready. >> it offers peace of mind in terms of safety for my family and everything in my life as well as my patients here and my fellow staff. the general public likely won't see vaccinations until next spring at the earliest. >> sheryl sandberg shared her father had tears in his eyes. she urged people to get a vaccination once available. he's a doctor in florida.

more details on the rollout. governor gavin newsom saying the next phase consists of about 8 million people. that group will likely include teachers, farmworkers and grocery store employees. the state's so-called community advisory committee will you will matly decide who goes next. it's holding an open forum where you can give your input. happening today parents and teachers in contra costa county will meet up again to discuss the change to keep students at home for even longer. san ramon decided to not start in-person learning on january 5th. the board voted to continue remote instruction until the county moves out of the purple tier and into the red. emotional comments were read. >> greater risk at the height of this pandemic. with our many safety protocols which life are we willing to sacrifice to achieve this hybrid plan?

science shows us kids in school with appropriate precautions are not creating an environment that spreads the virus. >> those in favor of in-person learning says the lack of personal interaction is causing grades to drop. a similar debate for santa rosa schools. the hopes of reopening in january gone. new action from san francisco leaders to help people struggling to make it in the bay. supervisors have reportedly approved two measures. advocates say some are living one step from becoming homeless. the rents for those units will not exceed 30% of the tenant's income. and homeless hotel room program. homeless people are able to be placed in about 30 of those

hotels. marcus, money and saving money will be among the hot topics at today's metropolitan transportation committee meeting. the marin ij says those representing transit agencies have asked the mtc to set aside at least $100 million now pegged for transportation projects. they want it to be used for salaries instead. every bay area transit agency is struggling, many considering job cuts. a follow-up in the south bay. santa clara county and leaders are moving forward with a new cap on food delivery fees. like doordash, uber eats and grubhub. the cap goes into effect immediately and will expire when restaurants can reopen indoor dining at full capacity. this morning nbc bay area storm ranger is busy scanning the skies. let's take a live look outside in fremont and in san jose right now.

through some of the rain loses its punch a bit. we look at how much rain we've seen for the water year so far only measuring 19% in san jose and oakland and we're not doing that much better elsewhere. as we go into the next couple of weeks hopefully we'll get a little bit more rain than we were expecting and can try to catch up. we may have another system we're watching starting next tuesday. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> looking pretty good as we look at the map there's a little blip for san jose. we move over to the tri-valley. a slower drive building out of the altamont pass and the cutthrough. no surprises.

welcome back to "today in the bay." we start with an nbc bay area exclusive and really terrifying moments for a retired san jose police captain. bullets fly in his direction after a man tries to steal his car. it all happened in the willow glen neighborhood. he says he was walking away from his own car while it was running to drop something off at a neighbor's. well, that neighbor saw a man from a nearby car jump in. the retired captain who asked us to conceal his identity ran after him and he got out. here is what happened next. >> the guy jumps out of the passenger side, levels an automatic rifle and shoots up at us. we can't let the bad guys win. >> video from surveillance camera shows what appeared to be the suspect on the roof of the getaway car. san jose police eventually caught up with the car and arrested the two inside. one city spreading the cheer for those in need. sunnyvale community service
