out with a group of crows for about three weeks around lake merit. at first the crows couldn't believe the parrot but they came to accept it into the murder. the experts say the parrot was likely somebody's pet who either escaped or perhaps was recklessly released. >> i saw something that wasn't a crow, a parrot with a yellow head. >> this gives me hope for the world, crows and parrots recognize each other, probably speak different dialects of the same language and hang out. a little bit of hope for humanity. >> apparently the parrot has been speaking crow. experts say the parrot can tolerate the overnight cold but it is defenseless against predators so maybe the crows will help him in that department. >> interesting. right now at 6:00, celebrating christmas during a crisis. concerns are growing as the high point of the holiday arrives. will people heed the advice to stay home.

coming up, how many americans are expected to travel as soon as today. and building faith in the covid-19 vaccine. take a look. while you were sleeping vice president mike pence and his wife karen pence both got shots just about an hour ago as cameras were rolling. the third hour of "today in the bay" continues. and it is good to be with you on this friday morning. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and happy friday. i'm cierra johnson. marcus has the morning off. here we are along with vianey and kari hall to get your weekend forecast. kari, how will it look this weekend? it's going to look very nice. we're starting out coldnd we've had some clear skies with this picture. so much more different compared to yesterday where it was raining and so we're dry now. we're going to have these frosty temperatures. we're going to see more mornings like this going into the weekend

as the dry weather continues. we're also going to see our highs reaching into the upper 50s and low 60s, and the dry weather continues into next week. so i'll be talking more about all of this in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. vianey, any issues for the morning commute? the roads have managed to stay pretty quiet overall,kari, which is good. it is friday. we do start to notice the traffic building right around this hour especially for some of the bridges and also the tri-valleys, right. we have people commuting in. let's take a look at the drive times, 580 to 680 looking at 23 minutes. seeing some slowing through there. anothe loor at the drive times throughout the bridges coming up in a few minutes. back to you. all right, thank you, vianey. a big change now across the bay area. at midnight a region wide stay-at-home order went into effect and it will remain in effect through january 7 at least. >> here is a live look across

the bay area this morning. it means tighter restrictions for all counties including san mateo, napa and solano which had no stay-at-home order previously. for restaurants takeout only and hair salons must close. at the same time more and more state and local leaders are questioning the value of closing all outdoor dining options. some diners in san mateo were asking if the closures were even necessary. this comes as san diego restaurants reopen with a judge putting the ban there on hold. and next week san francisco supervisor mike haney plans to introduce his own resolution questioning the governor's order. >> what i'd like the state to do is to either justify this position publicly with any sort of data and definitely reconsider it moving forward. >> some are calling for evidence that outdoor dining spreads covid-19 and believe the stay-at-home order will only move more people inside, which is riskier.

governor newsom is pushing back, justifying his decision to shut things down once again, and he points to the dramatic uptick in covid cases. hospitalizations and covid deaths. we are on track as the current models predict for state hospitals to overflow with five times the current number of patients. 400 people on average could die a day in a month. yesterday the state recorded its highest single day total of deaths at 379. we want to head to washington, d.c., and tracie potts. tracie, a lot of frustration that we're seeing over the stay-at-home orders are coming from small business owners who just don't know where their next payroll paychecks are going to come from and that brings us to the relief bill and talks on capitol hill. >> reporter: right, because the small business owners in the bay area keep hearing from washington money is on the way. loans are on the way.

assistance is on the way. and that is still the story this morning as they try over the weekend to work out the last few details of covid relief. for millions of americans devastated by covid-19 losing benefits just after christmas. lawmakers promise help is on the way. >> we're going to stay right here, right here, until we're finished, even if that means working through the weekend, which is highly likely. >> we're very close to an agreement, but the details really matter. >> reporter: details on $900 billion to help small businesses and extend unemployment. 885,000 americans filed for the first time last week. >> to be honest, i've run out of what i'm going to do next. >> reporter: there's $600 for every eligible adult. not everyone wants that. >> what could be dumber as an idea to print up money we don't have? >> reporter: this emergency

relief includes millions to distribute vaccines. vice president and mrs. pence and the surgeon general get theirs today with key members of congress up next. the fda could approve a second vaccine today as the u.s. hits another day of record cases. >> i think by next christmas, we'll be close to normal. >> reporter: president-elect joe biden on "the late show" urging americans to hold out one more year. now as we continue to watch and see what's happening with these negotiations on covid relief, remember there's also a midnight deadline to keep the government running and avoid a shutdown. lawmakers want to deal with it all together and they will likely today pass another temp rather extension just to get through the weekend into early next week so they can try to wrap this up. >> i feel bad when people have to work the weekends and it's not their regular shift, but i

don't feel bad in this instance. i want to talk about the biden administration, the cabinet picks. making a little bit of history with a native american slated to take over the department of the interior. >> reporter: yes, congresswoman deb haaland from new mexico is native american. she will be the first native american ever to serve on a presidential cabinet in a country founded on the native american culture, but she will be the first to ever serve in a cabinet and participate of her role if confirmed as interior secretary will be to oversee public lands including our tribal agreement with native americans like the pueblo that she came from, that she's a part of. >> wow. that will be interesting to see. definitely history making if confirmed. we know that that still has to happen.

thank you, tracie. have a great weekend. well, we are just one week away from christmas, and that means families will gather for the holiday. cases are now skyrocketing after thanksgiving break creating devastating consequences. millions are still taking the risk by flying or driving to see their families. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in walnut creek with the urgent message from health leaders. good morning, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. aaa is actually expecting upwards of 80 million people to travel this upcoming holiday and this is happening, of course, virtually. a majority of california is under this stay-at-home order. but we know the city of san francisco isn't taking any chances. they have this mandatory ten-day quarantine that's in place as we speak. that will apply to people who either live or work in san francisco that decide to leave the area. now there are some exceptions, i do want to point out for first responders and some essential workers, but the order overall is urging folks not to take part

in any nonessential travel. now here is what local and federal officials such as dr. fauci are saying about avoiding this nonessential travel and, of course, practicing social distancing. >> working to educate and issuing this order really to ensure people understand that we are in a grave situation. we do have time to turn this around. >> as we are proceeding with the rollout of the vaccine we absolutely have to adhere to the public health measures we're talking about all the time, the wearing of masks, the physical distancing, the avoiding crowds in congregate settings. we can't just say there's vaccine on the horizon so let's forget about everything else. >> reporter: the city of san francisco hopes people will comply with this quarantine but say that additional enforcement will be used if needed. the cdc is urging folks against holiday travel, of course, because this increases the chance of spreading covid-19.

pete suratos for "today in the bay." thanks, pete. head to nbcbayarea.com. a desperate call for help. sacred heart says it badly needs volunteers. organizers say because of the pandemic fewer volunteers are coming out. sacred heart has enough donations, they say, but not enough physical bodies to help hand out boxed foods or toys for families in need. >> a very difficult time filling our volunteer shifts and that's for this holiday toy program but also for just day-to-day.

right now at 6:15 let's start out in napa with a look at what to expect today, we're starting out cold. upper 30s. then as we go into the rest of the day warming up with our trend heading to the low 60s. a nice friday and a nice weekend ahead. we'll take a look at our microclimates coming up in a few minutes. and a quick check of your bridge drive times westbound 80 to the bay bridge, 11 minutes. westbound 82 to the san mateo

bridge, 13 minutes. 84 towards the dumbarton bridge about ten minutes. a traffic report coming up in just a few minutes. well, good morning. a very happy friday to you as well. a leading lgbtq group is pushing back on elon musk after he made fun of the way people ask others to use proper pronounce like him or her depending on the way they wish to be addressed. musk says it's, quote, an aesthetic nightmare. defending himself he pointed out tesla has been one of the top places for lgbtq people to work and the human rights campaign said, yeah, we were the one that gave you that rating. now apologize. the tesla head has accused people of being pedophiles online. he's criticized local county officials after they wouldn't let people go to work because it wasn't safe in the pandemic. called a wall street analyst a bonehead, and recent lip saly s

tesla employees who won't get paid over the holidays could volunteer to work. tesla stock will be added to the s&p 500 on monday meaning all kinds of funds that are required by their charter to own s&p 500 stock will have to buy tesla. tesla, in fact, will be the largest company ever added to the s&p 500 for the first time. the suspected russian hack is getting worse. computer systems in at least three states and 40 companies were accessed. that's in addition to the federal government. yesterday a former trump adviser warned joe biden he would be inheriting a government where no one knows what computer systems they're still accessing. president trump hasn't said anything about the historic hack. biden speaking to cbs' stephen colbert indicated his administration will take action including new sanctions.

something lighter as we get closer to christmas. i host a number of tech awards and one company that keeps popping up in the awards is berkeley's prime roots which makes meat out of a plant-like material. they're offering a full vegetarian christmas dinner. that turkey is not made out of turkey. i spoke with kimberly le the founder. >> it's interesting because there are a large group of people that want something that looks and feels exactly like the turkey and a lot of people like the loaf shape more. >> the dog in the background kind of sounds like a turkey. you can order sides like green beans and sweet potatoes. ladies, you will never guess what the green beans are made out of. >> you're right, i wouldn't.

>> they're green beans. >> okay. >> murphy says show me the turkey. a quick question. facebook, twitter, they're trying to combat some misinformation? what does it mean for those of us who love our blue check marks? >> oh, yes. everyone is going to get a blue check mark. the vaccination issue and people who are saying false things. it's going to start immediately. they have been cracking down about what people say on twitter itself. what's interesting is twitter has never actually attacked false information about vaccines before and they're only going to deal with coronavirus vaccines. >> all right. good to know. thank you very much, scott. well, online sales are

surging but people abandoning the brick and mortar stores? costco doesn't think so. they tell cnbc in-store profits are up and more stores are coming. this morning "the mercury news" is reporting plans are in motion for a brand-new costco store at new park mall in newark. it will come with new housing as well. newark along with dublin have been leading the bay area into housing construction and sales even more since the pandemic hit. and you want to have those mild temperatures to do that construction, so they are working on those houses, they have good weather this week, kari. yeah, we are going to see some great weather heading into the weekend no matter what you're planning to do. and it's always best to try to get outside and get some fresh air. we're all remaining socially distant so that sunshine helps you feel better. let's get a look at our temperatures and as you get ready to head out, freezing in ukiah. elsewhere we are very close.

check out our temperature in hayward as well as concord. we're in the upper 30s and one degree above freezing in morgan hill. now where it's really cold, the sierra. we were happy to see the snow that came down with that last storm system that moved through in spots like mammoth up to 11 inches of snow. other areas didn't get as much. they were anywhere from about 3 inches in kirkwood up to 7 inches in home wood. but now our weather is quieting down. and now we're feeling the cool temperatures. but we're still heading into the upper 50s and low 60s today, up to 59 degrees in los gatos. also, we'll see some upper 50s in parts of the south county. as we get over to the east bay expect it to reach up to 60 in danville. oakland reaching 61 degrees. and some upper 50s in daly city. san francisco will reach up to 58 degrees downtown. and our north bay highs will see those temperatures reaching into the low 60s. so as we go through the forecast, we were hoping for some more rain early next week

but it looks like it just weakens before it gets here. the rain staying to the north. we will have a storm system off the coast going into christmas eve, and it's possible we may get a christmas day storm which would be a nice little gift as we are definitely needing a lot more rain at this point, and it's going to be dry over the next week. we're going to be watching that, of course. we'll keep an eye on the forecast into the next several days. vianey, you've been watching the commute. how is it rolling on this friday morning? it's been friendly so far but i did just see -- you could see this traffic map, it populates in real time so looks like a crash maybe popped up in the south bay right there near san jose, possibly along 101. i'm going to look into that. the one from earlier cleared. aside from that, though, the thing that is building will be the drive times. look at 680. 24 minutes and we're starting to

thanks so much for joining us on this friday morning. i'm kris sanchez. >> and i'm cierra johnson. laura, marcus and mike all have the days off. let's get to the friday forecast with kari. good morning. a beautiful sun rise. take a look at this view we have over san jose. we're starting out all clear. compared to yesterday a big difference. and we're also feeling much cooler temperatures. over the weekend we're looking at more sunshine as the dry conditions continue into next week. here's a look at our highs for today, and it's going to be seasonable. this is the kind of weather we've gotten used to. we'll talk about if there's any changes ahead in the forecast. that's coming up in a few minimum. vianey, you've been watching the roads this morning. how is it looking right now? well, we do have a new crash in the south bay, this one along northbound 101 near oakland road. it looks like it's causing some delays, a two-car crash through

the area. if you do have to travel through there hit the roads early. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. more traffic but it is still friday light. a live look into palo alto where traffic is moving along quite nicely. hopefully we stay peaceful as we head into the weekend. i'm going to send it back to you. thank you. new this morning firefighters are on the scene of a big warehouse fire in the east bay. you can see the flames shooting out of the rooftop of what we believe is the everline services building on wright avenue in richmond. crews tell us they will remain there on site for at least a few more hours to watch for hot spots. no word yet on any injuries, but firefighters do believe it was a lab at some point. we don't know if it was still operational. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. and this just in to our

newsroom, palo alto area congresswoman eschew has been exposed to covid-19. according to a statement she released she is now self-isolating and has not tested positive. meantime, bay area vaccinations continue this morning. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at kaiser in santa clara, one of the biggest hospitals in the south bay. bob, are the vaccinations happening yesterday? >> reporter: they are supposed to be starting at 6:30. you can see the nurses are getting ready. we're in the cafeteria. they hope to get around 200 of their employees vaccinated today. who are these people? these are doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, people who are dealing with covid patients on a regular basis, tier one. the vaccine, if you look to the back -- what looks like a refrigerator, when the vaccine comes in, it comes in super cold, these are the pfizer

vaccines, at minus 94 degrees fahrenheit. they're not injected at that temperature so they are brought up to room temperature so the vacci vaccines you have four to six hours time period to get it in the arm before it is no longer effective. we will wait for them to start administering shortly. we've seen them in contra costa, san francisco, yesterday here in the south bay started administering it. we saw the county administering it to workers at skilled nursing facilities. take a look at this video, video from stanford health. they will be administering their shots some time later today. and they also sent us this video of their first batch arriving yesterday. you can see they were putting them in the special deep freeze refrigerator, again, to keep them at negative 94 degrees fahrenhe fahrenheit. if the moderna vaccine is approved for emergency use, and

you'll recall the fda's vaccine advisory board overwhelmingly recommended approval for moderna's vaccine yesterday, the fda approves it for emergency use it might be easier to distribute because it can be in standard freezers unlike pfizer's that require deep cold temperatures. >> it will make it easier for us to expand vaccinations to different parts of our system. >> reporter: the first shipments of the vaccine come into the bay area and the rest of the state are getting hard hit with the winter wave of infections. public officials say the vaccines are a ray of hope but, still, you have to continue to wash your hands, social distance, wear that mask at least for several months until a large percentage of the whole population is vaccinated. again, we're live here at kaiser permanente in santa clara. i'm keeping my voice down because they asked us to keep things quiet to focus on this very important task behind me.

again, at any moment they will start the first wave of vaccinations here trying to get 200 employees, that's the goal for today. the location in san jose will be much the same around 2:00. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> how exciting. meanwhile, the next round of covid vaccine shipments to california are now expected to be much smaller than first thought. according to "the chronicle" the state is expected to receive 233,000 doses of pfizer's vaccine next week, that's 4% of what was initially promised. pfizer said it is not experiencing any production issues on its end. the feds say the number of doses are not being reduced but deliveries are being spaced out by different sites over several days. mayor eric garcetti is facing a crisis at his home in los angeles. we now know that his 9-year-old daughter tested positive for covid-19. the mayor says that his

daughter's symptoms are mild at this point and that so far he nor his wife have tested positive for the virus. >> my family is going through what so many families are experiencing, and we're doing exactly what our public health officials have asked us to do after a covid-19 exposure. >> this announcement comes as icu beds in los angeles reach capacity and case rates are even higher than they are here in the bay area. nbc's miguel almaguer has more on dire situations happening there right before the holidays. >> reporter: kris and cierra, good morning. the numbers in southern california have just been through the roof. cases here continue to spike at record levels across the state of california in the last two days alone we've had more than 100,000 cases. the situation has become dire in southern california where there are no open icu beds.

tell you about in the south bay that's causing delays down near the oakland road exit area. your bridge times coming up. stay with us. president-elect biden says congress will have to go further to help the american economy. >> scott mcgrew, so far they haven't gone far at all, have they? they're still arguing over this round of stimulus and have been doing so since may. now it's really getting down to the wire. we think we may see a deal as soon as today though it may not include legal protections for business that is republicans wanted or help for cities, counties and states that democrats wanted. it should include a $600 payment to americans who qualify, that would be hatch the previous stimulus that went out earlier this year. not only has congress not been able to keep the american people or help the american people

hasn't funded the american government either. the government runs out of money in a matter of hours, midnight washington time. we're in a pandemic and our government is shutting down. in a statement yesterday pfizer said it had millions of doses of its vaccine in storage because the government had not yet told it where it wants the vaccines shipped. as cierra mentioned california and other states are getting fewer doses than they expected. you saw vice president pence getting the first of two shots this morning. he'll get the next one three weeks from now. the president has no immediate plans to be vaccinated. he's on twitter today criticizing masks and california's stay-at-home order. here is the vice president. >> i also believe that history will record this week was the beginning of the end of the coronavirus pandemic. but with cases rising across the

is the last day before winter break before we are going to have to deal with the home schooling. we're dealing with that today as we are looking at our temperatures in oakland going from the upper 40s to 50s. looking forward to not having to dial in. let's look at our highs for the south bay as we see a high of 59 degrees in los gatos. some upper 50s for much of the south county. our highs up to 60 in danville and pleasanton and some upper 50s as well for redwood city, san francisco 58 degrees downtown. our north bay highs reaching up to 61 degrees in novato. a fairly mild day and we're going to see our weather pattern continuing. it looks like it stays to the north of us. as i stop the time line here on christmas eve, notice all of the rain off the coast. we may be awaiting a christmas present with some rain. until then it is dry.

outdoor dining really spreads covid-19 and argue that the stay-at-home order only moves people inside which ends up being more risky. meantime bay area vaccinations continue this morning. "today in the bay's" bob redell clara. are vaccinations under way yet? >> reporter: they are. they started about 20 minutes ago and have this clinic set up in santa clara. they received a pfizer vaccine and today they hope to get through around 200 of their employees. these are people who are on the front lines at the highest risk dealing with covid patients on a regular basis. we have video here, the first person to receive it is patrick, a physical therapist. he's in the business of trying to get people back up and moving after dealing with this debilitating vaccine. patrick, do you mind if we sneak in real quick? what does it mean for you to finally get that first shot?
