a big disappointment for housing advocates in san jose. an apartment building that was set to be given to habitat for humanity is now set for demoliti demolition. the 110-apartment building downtown was supposed to be moved three blocks away to a sliver of surplus land. now they say they will demolish the building in february. they expected habitat for humanity to pay for a foundation at the new site. the non-profit doesn't have the money to do that. it's unclear whether leaders

expect the developer to foot that bill as well. it has served the public for more than 70 years, but the time has finally come to replace menlo park's fire station number 4. it was built in 1989. it's become outdated for all sorts of reasons. they have made a deal to build a brand new one. the new one will be more than 13,000 square feet. it's going to go from one to two stories. they'll have ten new beds with the new one. the price will be more than $1500. the station will be demolished next month. it will begin after that. a toy giveaway is holding a drive-thru toy give dlsaway.

coast medical experts have confirmed the moderna covid vaccine is safe for public use. > california is expecting 672,000 doses to start arriving this week. >> at the same time, a northern california couple who volunteered for the moderna vaccine trial is sharing that experience. nbc bay area's christy smith has more. >> when this pandemic started, we started thinking about, you know, what is the solution for the pandemic? >> reporter: so tush and leyla shaw from elk grove looked at the development and got in touch with moderna. they wanted to volunteer for the phase 3 trial. >> we wanted to do our duty and also our responsibility. >> he got his first shot on august 4, and the second one was on august 31st.

high surf has been pounding the bay area coast recently. this week it was wild out there. sky ranger catching these waves in pa sicifica last week. it can be beautiful to watch, but rogue waves can also be deadly, and that was the case for one woman last week. >> fortunately formal her, though, a hero was nearby and accidentally recorded the rescue. garvin thomas has tonight's "bay area proud." >> reporter: if there were ever such a thing as a pandemic-induced purpose, justin

huggs' drone would fit the bill. >> we were just finding things to do with the kids and bought the drone kind of on a lark. >> reporter: it was on a lark as well that last week josh grabbed the drone and headed for the coast. he heard the surf was big. >> i've always been fascinated by gigantic waves. >> reporter: when josh got to pacifica beach and launched the drone, he wasn't surprised by the video sent back. >> i was looking at the video, looking at the rocks on the north side. the waves were blasting over the rocks. it was really pretty to look at. >> reporter: but when josh looked up, something else caught his eye. >> someone had just been knocked over by a wave, someone with a dog, and they looked to be rolling with the wave. i'm like, uh-oh, that's not good. >> a woman was in the high surf,

wave after wave pinning her to the sand. seeing no one else around, josh threw aside the drone controller and ran to help. >> it became pretty clear this was a life and death situation. >> reporter: what happened next, not just because josh told us, but his drone running low on battery began to return on its own and caught video of josh struggling to keep the woman out of the waves, her dog by their side. the woman was too heavy for josh to lift himself, so all he could do was hold on, yell for help and hope a big set wasn't on the way. >> if a wave like that came, there is no way that she's going to be okay in that circumstance, right? it felt like the clock was ticking. >> after what felt like forever, two others came, and together they were able to drag the woman to safety. >> i think he's a hero. >> battalion hero jeff huntsy

weekend on a long-a waited pedestrian and bike bridge. it's going to change things over there. the span was hoisted by crane and installed overnight. the bridge will provide a safe way to get from the residential side of town over to businesses in the bay street area. right now you got those railroad tracks. they cut the areas off from each other, and now they're not going to matter so much. pedestrian bridge set to open next year, maybe by the summer. our traffic cameras captured a hazy sky over walnut creek this afternoon. a spare the air alert has been issued for tomorrow because of the smoky skies. this is from people burning wood. tomorrow's alert bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel both indoors and outdoors, so remember that. vianey arana joining us now. we're talking about a celestial

we'll also number those 40s. it's dry, but we have a system passing to our north that could dip down and bring the light possibility of seeing some rain for the north bay. certainly will see some clouds in the morning for the north bay. low to mid-60s in the south bay. lovely afternoon, mostly sunny. but let's talk about that great conjunction, right? what are some things you need to know? what is it? why did i write sunset tomorrow at 4:54. that is a great question. the reason i wrote that is because you're supposed to see it truly at sunset, and then you'll have about an hour to see it, also known as the christmas star. you'll want to look southwest at sunset. the last conjunction this close at night was at 12:26 794 years ago. they're going to pass so close to each other that apparently

from the vantage point on earth, they're going to appear to look like you can kind of put your thumb up and then that's how close they're going to be. of course, in outer space they'll be a million miles away, but they're going to appear really close together, and the timing is merely a coincidence based on the orbits and the planets. the tilt of the earth is what has to do with winter solstice, so two different things through there. really cool. the conjunction this close isn't going to happen until 2080, which is a long time away. long-range outlook right now. let's talk about that rain again. light chance of seeing some rain maybe for the north bay, but what about that christmas rain? good news. right now the models are showing a good amount of moisture either for later in the day on christmas or later in the night. so one thing we're still trying to work out is going to be the timing of it, but it's definitely looking like christmas rain and also sierras, snow. here's a look at the next seven days. santa is getting his suit ready. we look like rain on christmas day and throughout the weekend,
