right now at 4:30 another dose of hope. the bay area hospital set to receive the moderna vaccine and when shots are expected to start. plus -- >> the new variant is out of control, and we need to bring it under control. a new and even more contagious strain of the coronavirus is raising concerns. the travel nightmare it's causing and the growing debate over stopping flights coming to our airports. the morning here in the bay area. meteorologist kari hall is tracking when we can expect to see that rain return. coming in i was listening to the temptations "i wish it would rain." there you go. yeah, all right. although it's clear in san francisco but we've seen this very dense fog moving through parts of the east bay as well as the north bay. the arrival of the tulle fog creeping into the bay area. visibility cut down to zero. quarter mile visibility where we'll see very low visibility there as well as the cold temperatures. we're starting out in the mid-30s, some of us, just a degree above freezing. we'll talk more about this coming up in a few minutes. mike, you have a traffic alert. i do, kari, and it's not

related to the fog. look at all that yellow highlighted as we take the map to full screen. that's what kari has been talking about, the fog coming in. we have a driver going the wrong way. af alert for this part of oakland at coolidge. marcus, the rest of the bay looks just fine. back to you. mike, thank you. all eyes on moderna's vaccine as the nation races for a vaccine. the vaccine is being distributed to hospitals all over the country. u.s. marshals will escort the first vials to nearly 4,000 locations. they are packing thousands of those vaccine kits. these vials don't require storage in a deep freeze. >> those shipments come in to

the memphis facility and go to a designated covid-19 vaccine store in a dedicated area, get processed and then will be loaded into containers for launch via truck or aircraft to the destination market where they will be prioritized for delivery the following morning. >> and just like the pfizer vaccine moderna requires a second dose, about a month apart for those 18 years and older. and we're learning more information about where some of the doses of the moderna vaccine are headed. santa clara county expecting more than 39,000 doses tomorrow. marin county is expecting 3,100. alameda county's vaccine pfizer group meets today. we expect to learn more about the doses headed to all nine bay area counties in the coming days. the big numbers just keep on coming. within the last 24 hours california confirms more than 46,000 new covid-19 cases, and that brings the state's overall

infection total to more than 1.8 million people that is on top of the 161 deaths just added to the state's overall death count which now approaches 23,000 people. here in the bay area there are now more than 220,000 confirmed infections. since the beginning of the pandemic back in march there are more than 2,200 people who have died. and new this morning the cdc is recommending that law enforcement officers should be among those next in line to get the covid vaccine. the pandemic is having a deadly impact on those first responders. 164 law enforcement officers have died of coronavirus nationwide since the pandemic started. according to the site. mary lou was the first casualty in march. in july deputy sheriff oscar

options to keep them in the city n. a report by apartment finder, it says that renters who stay in the city are looking to become home buyers instead of staying in high-priced apartments. around an 8% decrease from last year. the report says rent is lowering for higher end apartments meaning renters are trending in their apartments and actually for ainsingle family homes to m it through the pandemic. now to a live look across california, across the bay area, i should say, a spare the air day has been issued for today because of smoky skies because people are burning a little bit more wood now that it's finally winter. several cities are looking at hazy conditions and the alert bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any solid fuel both indoors and outdoors. so, kari, we just put some candles in the fireplace so we

could pretend. right, yeah. no burning those fireplaces or anything to stay warm and we're going to have the spare the air alert day because of the poor air quality that we've seen especially in the north bay. that will be true for the east bay as well as the santa clara valley. some of our inland valleys will have numbers over that unhealthy threshold. if you are sensitive to that you need to limit your time outside and we are going to have slightly warm temperatures today for this time of year as we are entering into the first day of winter. highs that will reach into the upper 50s, even mid-60s in spots like san jose as well as palo alto. i'll be watching this. we'll talk about that rain ahead in the extended forecast. mike, what's the update on the traffic alert? kari, it's still going on. that's for oakland, folks. a big shot of the bay and we see mostly green. over to 580, though, where that traffic alert is that kari and i

year. the s&p 500 almost 15%. and the nasdaq more than 40%. that's the best year in over a decade. in part because of tesla, which is set to become the biggest company ever to join the s&p 500 index this morning. shares of tesla have skyrocketed to new record highs, up about 700% this year bringing the electric carmaker's value to more than $600 billion, more than the big three automakers combined by a mile. tesla, after reporting a profit for five straight quarters, will be one of the ten most valuable companies in the s&p along with apple, microsoft and facebook. and burger king wants you to have it your way on them. for just $1. the fast food chain rolling out a new dollar menu. and to promote it burger king will deposit $1 into random venmo accounts starting next monday. the new menu features the

really big rainfall we had. all of that moisture left on the ground starts to condense and so you have high humidity and those cool temperatures and up above this it's all clear and calm. that fog drifts through some of the mountain gaps. we know that can really wreak havoc on the central valley. it's not making it into parts of the south county today. could make it through the altamont pass into livermore and into parts of the delta, fair field and the carquinez straight, fairfield and parts of the north bay. this is happening on the first day of winter. it started early this morning. winter solstice means the sun is now directly over the tropic of capricorn. with this we have seen it give us those cool temperatures but, of course, for the southern

hemisphere direct sun light rays and it's warm summertime there. our sunset will happen before 5:00. it's the shortest day of the year. as soon as the sun sets look up in the sky. saturn and jupiter will be the closest we've seen in almost 800 years. it will look like a bright star in the sky. they're calling this the christmas star because this is the first time this has aligned since 800 years but also they think this was also the setup when jesus was born and they were looking for him over jerusalem so that was pretty cool to see that fact as we are seeing a lot of things happening across the bay area. now we are getting ready for rain. santa brings us a little gift as we go into the weekend. off and on showers. we'll keep you updated on that.

mike, you've been following the traffic alert. what's the update on that? the traffic alert is there's no change right now. two lanes blocked, that's 580 getting away from the bay bridge. that traffic alert and the fog, look at the yellow in and out of the central valley. the on ramp for coolidge is blocked because it's involved in the same crash. a wrongway driver reported though visibility was just fine there from the report. looking over to vasco, discovery bay, we have a reliable voice through that fog and down vasco. we can make up a little bit of time. it's at speed as is the rest of the bay. we'll send it back to you. kris?

london and other parts on lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus. it has mutated. canada is joining the list banning travelers coming from uk because of the new strain of covid-19. so far the u.s. has not followed suit. the new strain seems to be even more contagious. however, not more dangerous. take a listen. >> while it seems to be more easily transmissible we do not have evidence yet this is more deadly to those who acquire it or the vaccines developed will not be effective against the virus as well. >> france, germany, italy, the netherlands announced restrictions on uk travel. a california health care worker showing symptoms after dramatically trying to save the life of someone on the plane from orlando to l.a.x. the united plane ended up being

diverted to new orleans. this is where the passenger later died. an e.r. worker says on the "today" show he knew the risk and knew the man could be infected when he started providing cpr. >> that was my mind-set. there's the possibility but this person might pass away if we don't help. >> his wife informed him about possible symptoms and other passengers notified. you can hear more during the full report on the "today" show that airs right after "today in the bay" at 7:00. many southern california churches are scaling back preparations to provide christmas mass. churches across the state are saying to keep the spirit alive mass will be held outside. parishioners must keep their social distance, also must wear a mask. some churches have limited

but at least some of the players have already reportedly been affected with covid-19. the gm doug wilson said during the nine months they've been off the ice some team members were infected, not on the sharks watch, but while playing with teams overseas. they will play a 56-game regular season starting january 13th. the san jose state spartans will be busy on new year's eve. you can expect to find them working to finish the football season undefeated so they're already in uncharted waters beating boise state on saturday. they'll play ball state in the arizona bolten days from now. and on capitol hill lawmakers are agreeing on a relief deal. next our washington insider breaks down the stimulus checks millions of americans will soon be getting and when.
