more time than the newscast. you showed us storm ranger. we're scanning the skies with our mobile doppler radar, looking off to the west and then the southwest. we're starting to see some rain showing up offshore approaching the coast near santa cruz. the red beam sweeping across the screen, some sprinkles there off to the west of half moon bay. a lot of clouds moving in and what is really unique about this storm is if you look here on the wide angle view it is diving in toward central and southern california. so, unfortunately, where we're concerned it is probably going to take a lot of the bigger rain totals to the south. here is the progression as we head into the morning. the heavier showers will likely stay around the santa cruz mountains and areas south of san jose. the north bay could really miss out in terms of rain totals with this particular storm but as we move forward over the next seven days we're tracking storms that will turn progressively wetter as we head toward next weekend. we have a very interesting look at the first forecast for the new year coming up in about ten

minutes that could bring much higher rainfall totals than this particular storm tonight especially by next weekend. a closer look in ten minutes. >> let me ask you a quick question. up in the santa cruz mountains they have the fires a few months ago. is this the kind of storm that is going to be doing something to the burn areas? >> that is the main concern now as we see the storms set up. if we take a look at the rainfall expectations here over my shoulder the one area that should see the most rain appears to be around the santa cruz mountains but generally less than 0.5 inch rain and a quick moving storm so the rain rates per hour and the duration i think probably won't cause any major issues. but as storms get wetter and stronger as we head toward next weekend it'll be one of the many burn areas to watch in the next 7 to 10 days. >> thanks very much. rob is keeping you updated on the wet weather even when we're not on the air of course. you can follow him on twitter. for the latest information he kind of gives seminars sometimes on twitter. it is fascinating.

scott budman is the people's astronomer. he captured the halo around the moon and posted it on twitter. he does a lot of sky gazing. he is amazing. explanation is pretty cool. local meteorologists say light from the moon was refrakting through ice crystals and the thin layer of clouds high over the area. the phenomenon is called a lunar halo. it is rare. pretty spectacular when conditions are right. rob, you probably knew all that but i find it fascinating. >> you know, it tells you something about the clouds that are outside. a neat way at night to do a little back yard meteorology as well. a lot of times the clouds are part of the outer fringes of a storm system when rain arrives. the storm system is starting to bring the rain producing clouds right along the coast. up to the north bay we have
