"today in the bay's" chris pollone is live for us with the latest from capitol hill this morning. chris? >> reporter: marcus, good morning. the house of representatives yesterday voted to override a veto from president trump, the

first one of his presidency over that big military spending bill. the question here today in the senate is whether republicans will back the bill or the president. a bipartisan rebuke for president trump. >> the yeas 322, the nays are 87. >> reporter: more than a two-thirds house majority voting to override his veto, the first time it's happened during the prum presidency. he said it would allow for the renaming of military bases and because it fails to strip liability protections from websites over what their users post. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: a close vote to increase coronavirus stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000, a move pushed by the president but backed by democrats. >> do you support a $2,000 -- >> yes. >> this is not a stimulus, it is

not. and it does nothing to help get people back to work. >> reporter: it sets up a test for those who oppose increasing stimulus checks. >> i am telling donald trump don't just talk about it, act. these senate republicans have followed you through thick and thin. get them now to act and support the $2,000 checks. >> reporter: there's no guarantee mitch mcconnell will bring the measure to a vote. and to that end independent vermont senator bernie sanders says he will object and try to delay a vote on the military spending bill until he is assured that there will be a vote in the senate on increasing the stimulus money. i'm chris pollone, "today in the bay." laura, back to you. >> now to the race for a vaccine. kamala harris and her husband are set to receive their first

doses. harris will join a growing number of high level officials who have been vaccinated against covid-19 including president-elect joe biden, vice president mike pence, house speaker nancy pelosi and dr. anthony fauci. >> those numbers continue to climb, more than 19 million confirmed infections since the start of the pandemic. california continues to see an uptick. the state department of health announcing more than 33,000 new cases bringing the overall total to more than 2.1 million. more than 24,000 people have died here in the state. >> you have to wonder will the governor's stay-at-home order be extended? at a news conference the governor himself says the stay-at-home order extension for certain regions is likely depending on covid-19 cases and some hospitalization numbers that will be tallied and

finalized. one says the shutdown is making it hard for his employees. >> people need to work, they have a family. >> there are two regions that are set to be extended in california, the san joaquin valley and southern california. they have an icu bed capacity of zero but the numbers in the bay area aren't as clear. the count here fluctuates daily. a decision won't be made until they take a look at the numbers finally today. a number of people are heading to the slopes. this is usually the most popular time of the year for that area. the mayor says the town can't stop people from coming. even governor newsom encouraging

people to go skiing as it is a socially distant activity. just before that stay-at-home order threshold. several chips like the princess cruises, holland america and norwegian cruise line will start docking in los angeles this week to help re-establish operations in the u.s. waters. the ships won't have passengers and will only dock to fuel and supply. they will need to show the coast guard cdc guidelines are being followed. >> some people just aren't lucky enough to go on a cruise. a tough time for a lot of bay area families. the hunger at home group will hold a meal distribution group. they are asking governor newsom to keep the national guard

you can see some dangerous travel is expected up through january. let's get a look at the snowpack to see where we currently stand. statewide we're at about 55% of average. the north about 56%. about 33% but we have plenty of opportunity for accumulation. so let's take a look at what we're tracking heading into the weekend and early next week. it says tuesday, january 5th. so this is accumulations over the next couple of days and check out kingvale which is where the camera was. 57 inches up through kingvale. truckee, 32 inches. a lot of fresh powder up there. that will make for dangerous travel. something we'll keep an eye out for. mike, over to you. >> right, vianey. we watch the conditions and watch the travel restrictions and listen to the folks from tahoe for what their requests

let's check in with mike, first. >> great driving conditions right now. a little build through the richmond bridge toll plaza over the bay to san rafael. no major problems. we'll check when things are busier to the south of there across the bay bridge coming up. good morning. happy tuesday to you as well. more records on wall street even as we get close to the end of the year when we normally see a dip. the dow set a new record with the high as did the s&p 500 and the nasdaq. the nasdaq up more than 40% on the year. investors feel tech stocks are a sieve bet. we may not know what the future holds but it probably involves an iphone and netflix as well. it's unlikely the senate will pass what president trump and the democrats want.

as chris pollone was showing us there was some republican support those $2,000 checks. we'll talk more about that. it does not look like the president will get his way on section 230, the changes he wants to the communications laws so that websites and social networks like twitter and facebook would have greater legal liability for what people post. the president says that will mean twitter will censor him less. experts say the opposite is actually true. if social networks lose their legal protections under section 230, they'll censor more messages from more people not fewer. the president wanted the rule change as part of the defense spending bill and when it wasn't there he vetoed the bill. congress is in the process of overriding the veto this morning. far bigger issue for president trump as far as twitter goes is what happens when three weeks from now he's just a regular

american? twitter sometimes suspends accounts from regular americans if they say some of the things the president has been saying as president on twitter. american airlines will fly the first paying customers aboard a boeing 737 max since the two crashes of that airplane. the faa says the plane is safe to fly again. the flight takes off from miami at 7:30 our time heading to new york. sam brock will have more on the "today" show about that. a recent poll shows most americans who know about the 737 max will not fly it. that same poll shows most americans aren't conscious of the airplane's past. speaking of numbers the tsa says a record number of people are flying, the most since march. this despite warnings, really pleas not to do so. they've established flying itself is reasonably safe but what you're doing when you get

late tomorrow. we're going to start out dry and then a quick moving system moving from north to south overnight into really early thursday morning. a couple hundredths of an inch. our greater rain chance will move in. into saturday, sunday and another storm expected to trickle in heading into monday and even tuesday of the first week of january, maybe even longer. we're settling into an active weather pattern. as i mentioned not a huge rainmaker. just a couple hundredths of an inch starting out in the north bay, probably will see the higher rain totals. definitely going to want to take out the rain boots for kids and umbrella. you will need them heading into the next couple of days. mike, i will send it over to you.

vianey, you got to show folks the beautiful view of the moon. the bay bridge toll plaza, the phase is december, late december phase which is why the traffic is so light. you do have a good amount of traffic. road work going on toward 29th that really stopped stuff up. a smooth drive at contra costa county and the approach to the bay bridge and the for the bay into san francisco from that stretch of the golden gate. even the altamont pass is at speed. new developments surrounding the bombing in nashville. what investigators are still trying to nail down and the new clue coming to light. plus, some are calling this modesto man a modern day st.

that explosion damaged more than 40 businesses, buildings, and even injured three people and killing the suspect. investigators say anthony warner is responsible. president-elect joe biden says he was briefed on that investigation, and he took time to condemn domestic attacks. it took more than four months for the czu and scu fires now considered completely controlled. cal fire made that declaration which means the fires are fully extinguished and no chance of them reigniting. >> burned more than 86,000 acres. the scu fire scorched parts of multiple counties including santa clara, contra costa and alameda. it charred nearly 400,000 acres. 6:26. now to something good in the central valley. one veterinarian walking the streets and treating homeless

kr >> reporter: that recent stay-at-home order and recent language there's a chance that stay-at-home order could be extended. monday governor gavin newsom held an update where he not only provided an update on the number of covid cases and icus but other regions of the state and where they stand with the stay-at-home order. san joaquin valley and southern california will have orders extended and both have zero icu available. the bay area, the governor says the numbers are seeming to fluctuate and he will make that decision based on the numbers collected this week. he'll use that data to make that decision. for business owners and restaurant owners and customers that uncertainty is pretty nerve-racking. >> i think it will be scary for small business and especially since we can't eat outdoors

trying to help the nightlife. supervisor matt haney is pushing for a new covid-19 relief fund. it would go to san francisco nightclubs. recent press release from supervisor's office cites a city controller's report that shows san francisco nightlife is responsible for more than $7 billion annually. employs more than $63,000 people and generated $80 million in payroll and sales tax. >> the bay area is an expensive place to live. bloomburg "businessweek" looked at the data to understand how much someone's salary could change compared to the cost of living. the two worst cities are here in the bay area. for someone making $100,000 a year you may want to reconsider. san jose as the worst place to move with that salary followed

tweet that republican leadership is weak and tired. a lot of action in congress you need to know about. the passage of a bill in the house that would increase the stimulus payments to $2,000 supported by trump and the democrats. the overriding of the president's veto on the defense bill. it wasn't just house democrats voting yes. so now that the house has overridden the veto it's up to the senate to do the same. senator bernie sanders has indicated he will hold up the vote unless mitch mcconnell agrees to a vote on increasing those stimulus checks to $2,000. something mcconnell doesn't even want to bring to the floor for a vote. the president has re-tweeted his support for bernie sanders on twitter. donald trump, bernie sanders and

the democrats are on the same side on one issue, stimulus checks. senate republicans now have to decide when it comes to two issues, the stimulus check and the defense bill, whether they stand with the president or the republican party and their stated goals. there are 22 days until joe biden is president. he says the civilian leadership of the defense department and the office of management and budget are not working closely enough with his transition team, something those offices deny. and just a week nm the georgia elections that will determine the future of the senate. if both democrats win there, the senate will be controlled by the democrats. if one loses the senate stays in the hands of republicans. so our eyes are on congress this morning, so many strange bedfellows. we're tweeting about it. i'm @scottmcgrew. >> thanks so much, scott. 6:44. the covid surge continues and a

lot of people are turning to testing but not exclusively because they feel sick but to see if they're in the clear to celebrate with friends and family. kris sanchez joins us live where a new self-testing site opens today. kris? >> reporter: hi there, laura. for folks who have avoided testing because they don't like the looks of that deep nasal swab, this might be the test for those folks. here at mitchell park library the self-testing will allow people to be able to swab themselves and, better news, this is a swabbing of the pout only, no deep nose probing. a trained observer will be watching. except during high demand periods and there is a lot of demand this week. bay area hospitals seeing a surge in patients pushing hospitals to the brink for any

patient needing intensive care. as we saw with thanksgiving and christmas a lot of people are looking to have new year's celebrations. doctors repeat as they have that this strategy is flawed. >> there is an intubation period and superspreader events and there are asymptomatic people that can spread it, too. we don't know what the peak will be and that's the frightening part. we are already overwhelmed with the number of patients coming in. >> reporter: the emergency room is for emergencies only and should not be used as a testing site. self-testing here at mitchell park library starts at 10:00 this morning. it will happen on tuesday. if this isn't in your neighborhood there's a testing site near you. our coronavirus section, you can find all of the testing locations all around the bay area.

cierra johnson for "today in the bay." new overnight two people are found dead inside an rv in the south bay. this is in san jose. police say there's nothing indicating foul play and the case has been turned over to santa clara county coroner's office. one south bay group is here to help. the hunger at home group will hold a holiday meal distribution event this morning at 7:00 a.m. they want to help increase the number of people giving out food. they're looking for an extension. the next time you're at a safeway store you can make a $10 donation or more.
