>> i'm good. >> kari is back. mike is back. and soap is the rain. yes, it's been so great to see. we're seeing the showers coming through. we've powered up storm ranger. it's parked on san bruno mountain and the clearest view of where that rain is falling. right now moving into san francisco, you can see it on the bay bridge, the richmond-san rafael bridge. it's a soggy commute for some of us as you get ready to head out the door. i'll be tracking this rain. we'll talk about that along with the high winds in the forecast come up in a few minutes. mike, you've been tracking a traffic alert. yes, kari. and it's in the tri-valley w. that rain moving into the east bay, it's getting closer to this scene. as we take a live look at the dublin camera you see headlights are jamming up much worse than we've seen from about tassajarra. how jammed it is. a semitruck and another vehicle got in a crash.

your middle lanes are still blocked. it is slower than it was before the rest of the bay is light. thank you very much, mike. back to the weather and happening now as kari just mentioned beachgoers are warned to stay alert. the conditions have turned tragic in the north bay. this is so sad. two children presumed drowned as well as their father. cierra johnson following the story for us. the children haven't been found yet and the father was just trying to save his kids. >> reporter: yes, good morning. at this point the search for the two children is a recovery mission for their bodies. and right now those search crews will be paying close attention to the weather. we've been out here for a couple of hours and i can tell you the wind comes and goes and the rain

also has been on and off all morning so that will be what crews will be paying attention to as they look to re-enter the water and search from above. we'll give you a play-by-play of what played out. this, of course, happening at blind beach near jenner. the sonoma county sheriff's office tells us they received a distress call for three people in the water. this after two children, 4 and 6 years old, were swept into the water. their father then jumped in after them. at one point the father was able to grab on and hold on to the 4-year-old. but he was then swept further out to sea. the dad drowned and eventually washed up to shore. several agencies did respond. the coast guard, sonoma county sheriff's helicopter unit, state parks, the highway patrol and lifeguards responded. at nightfall the waves got to be too strong and the wind made it difficult to continue that search. >> when the cavalry got here we were searching for the kids and

we found a pair of shoes washed up, a jacket. but no signs of the kids. we looked for hours. and that's where we stand right now. >> reporter: right now an emotionally tough situation. that's when crews say they will resume the search. weather will play a huge role. we're not sure where they're from. we're live from marin county, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." more heartbreak, a look at san jose kaiser, facing a big covid outbreak. one worker in the emergency room has died, dozens more infected. kris sanchez will bring us a live report in 30 minutes on what health leaders think may have caused the spread. the pandemic showing no signs of slowing down.

more than 20 million confirmed infection infections nationwide. california approaching 26,500 deaths. the business end of the latest stimulus payment concludes today. many americans, the new $600 stimulus payment arrived friday or over the weekend, but today the u.s. treasury secretary officially transfers funds to banks to fund those payments. nearly 150 million payments went out online or through paper checks and prepaid debit cards. now to the latest stunning twist in the presidential election. we know president trump hasn't conceded and won the election. he did not. during a recorded phone call the president was pleading with georgia's republican secretary

of state to find more votes to change that state's election. >> i want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. i only need 11,000 votes. give me a break. >> we'll have a live report from the response from congress condemning the president's actions after they heard that phone call. authorities in san bernardino county have identified two new cases involving people living in the same home in big bear. the mutant strain was first discovered. this adds to the four cases confirmed last week in san diego county. experts say the new strain not only spreads faster but children are more vulnerable.

a live look in los angeles where the situation has become even more critical for maxed out hospitals. teams are preparing to ration resources due to the overload of icu cases. and it's not just hospitals. southern california funeral homes have had to turn away some families because they say they're running out of space. some mortuaries are dealing with more than five times the normal number of deaths. and people with relatives in the hospital are fearing for their loved ones' care. >> my biggest fear for my husband being transferred elsewhere is that he's going to regress and become very ill again with covid again. >> l.a. mayor eric garcetti said the county is recording new cases at the rate of one every six seconds. later today the county plans to reopen its massive covid testing site at dodger stadium which it recently shut down to address

traffic concerns. a temporary field hospital has been set up on the 10th and 11 floors of a hospital for those with heart attacks or accidents. e.r.s there are full with coronavirus patients. one out of every four people tested in san diego county now is now testing positive. a live look at sfo this morning. holiday air travel led to record numbers since the start of the pandemic. tsa agents say more than a million people passed through the nation's airports over the weekend. the most since mid-march. dr. anthony fauci says this increase was predictable but now it is even more crucial to social distance due to the expected post-holiday surge. take you to oakland. oakland holding its first-ever virtual inauguration ceremony. mayor libby schaaf will give the opening remarks at 11:00 this morning and acting city clerk will give the oath of office to five city councilmembers.

kari? we're seeing a lot of the rain moving through this morning. i wanted to show you storm ranger twhashgs ranger, what it looks like in the north bay. it's starting to work its way down into the peninsula as well as the east bay as we get a closer look it's been off and on, and that's what you can expect. some of those showers moving through from tiburon over to richmond as well as oakland but then as we go into this rainy monday, we'll also have some busty winds which would turn up some high waves along the coastline. we'll have more rain in the forecast as we head through the week. i'll have the time line on all of that coming up. mike, you've been watching the morning commute. what's going on right now? kari, overall the big story is the weather. north bay, east bay, over in toward the tri-valley now as the progression for the rain system but we look at the map and we do have one area that is a problem. everything else pretty green. it's west 580 approaching the dublin interchange. the crash happened a while back, about half an hour ago, still

blocks your middle lanes. only your right and left lanes are getting by. that's 580 at or just shy of the dublin interchange. backup goes back beyond the camera there over at the tassajara and continuing almost to el chara. a look at the rain has progressed and now hits the lens with light traffic. watch those speeds. laura? thank you, mike. another major security breach involving one of the largest cell phone companies. up next the provider that was hacked and customer information that may have been stolen. plus, how much was prince really worth? coming up, what the federal government says after years from his passing. taking a look at the futures this morning, they are up slightly this morning. this will be the first day of trading in the new year. you're watching "today in the bay."

at 6:15 you have to be careful as we're going to have the big breakers and they could reach over 25 feet. stay well away from the water. we're going to have some rain coming in along with some high winds. i'm tracking all of that for you in the forecast. that's coming up. and, kari, you have to be really careful in the tri-valley as well. these folks jamming up here because of a crash close to the dublin interchange.

i learned there are nails reported. lots of cleanup to do. we'll talk about the progress here and another section of 580 shows the other issue, the rain kari is talking about, wet roadways on the richmond side. the north bay also has some sloppy conditions. we're tracking all of this coming up. the first trading day of 2021, focus today on construction spending numbers. they closed at record highs to wrap up a year of strong gains. the s&p 500 up 16%. the nasdaq up 43% of the year, its best gain since 2009. t-mobile suffered a security breach that may have exposed some customers call records. the company says the breach happened last month. the information gathered didn't include customer names, email addresses, credit card or social security numbers.

t-mobile says it's notified nearly 200,000 who may have been affected. jcpenney tops the list of dangerous retailers. the department store closed locations after filing bankruptcy last year. more locations could close in 2021. sears and kmart made the list. now a shadow of its former self. tesla shares up more than 1% ahead of the opening bell. this comes as sales rose 36% last year. the carmaker did miss its goal of delivering half a million but only by 500 cars. musk stuck with that goal though the pandemic shut down tesla's plant for several weeks. this morning tesla introduced its new model y in china being built in shanghai. the final episodes of "jeopardy" with alex trebek will

air this week. he died at the age of 80. he had a very public battle with stage four pancreatic cancer. these were recorded days before he died and will include special tributes. he hosted more than 8,000 episodes of "jeopardy" starting in 1984. a new twist in the battle over late singer prince's estate. the irs says it's undervalued by millions. they say his home is worth just over $82 million. the estate is said to be twit that amount because prince's music publishing and recording interests were never accounted for in his will. the executors want to go to tax court to settle the issue. larry king is out of the intensive care unit according to a source close to the family. king had been in the hospital with covid-19 for more than a week. a source close to the family says the he got it from a health care worker who came into his

home. he has battled a number of medical issues including heart attacks, diabetes and lung cancer. it's 6:18 right now and trending this morning, more money maybe for you after no one won the latest mega millions. if you're feeling a little lucky this year maybe, maybe the time to get your tickets. tomorrow's mega million jackpot will top $432 million. maybe you're really lucky. what if you hit the powerball jackpot as well. it now stands at $410 million. so i don't know the odds of this one but that would be $842 million combined. nobody even won on saturday so it's getting rolled over. >> hmm, nobody won. the chances of winning both pretty small. kari, you're a woman of science. i'm guessing really small. >> yeah, you have a better chance of being struck by

lightning. probably here in the bay area, too, where we rarely see lightning here. just those odds, wow. let's get a look at the rain moving through. as we check out our storm ranger, the mobile doppler radar parked on san bruno mountain and it's giving us the best view of where the rain is. as you get ready to head out the door, and i know you need this. you'll be driving through this as we look at what is happening, some of the rain moving through, it's right now not over the richmond-san rafael bridge but we will see that moving through briefly within the next few minutes. some of those downpours have been moving through and is off and on. that's what we're seeing for parts of the east bay. most of it is fairly light. let's head down to the peninsula. the rain on 280 as you're rolling up from the south bay up the peninsula into san francisco. you're going to be in and out of the rain as well. but most of the heavier rain will stay across parts of the north bay getting lighter as it

approaches the south bay. we're still in with the rain at 1:00 today. but as you're heading home late this evening during the evening commute that rain will be clearing out. still some gusty winds. we're dry tomorrow and then another round of lighter showers will be here between wednesday afternoon and thursday. so we are going to have some rainfall totals in some spots in the north bay reaching close to half an inch of rain. that's the reason we'll have to watch this closely. we will have a north bay microclimate weather alert for today as we watch those rainfall totals add up. but then as we go through the forecast we have rain today, clear tomorrow. rain again on wednesday. clear on thursday and then rain on friday. so we're going to see three waves of rain coming in this week and temperatures holding steady with highs in the upper 50s and those morning temperatures near 40 degrees. mike, you've been watching a traffic alert, have seen that happening in the tri-valley. what's going on now? well, kari,addition to the rain that you're talking about,

we do have the tri-valley with the dublin camera shows how traffic bogged down for west 580 passing tassajara starting to move better. i'm not sure why. i'm going to guess they're moving some cars. look at the map. just shy of the dublin interchange is where the three middle lanes were blocked, perhaps four and five lanes at one point. reports that there are nails scattered across the roadway as well. a semitruck involved. no major injuries but a big backup. look at that. perhaps 15 to 20 minutes will be added on your drive if you do take 580 out of livermore and the altamont pass. some folks are choosing to check on highway 84. that's over on the east side of the dublin interchange. as you get closer to eden canyon, reports of a car fire on the shoulder. meantime rain, not fire. the toll plaza shows that you rain hitting the light traffic there. be careful. back to you. >> thank you, mike.

"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning, everyone. i am scott mcgrew in for marcus. marcus has week off. lucky guy. >> and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike in a moment. he has a look at that soggy commute out there because we saw this rain come through overnight, kari. how are we looking now? it's been off and on. we've seen most of the rain in parts of the north bay. we've started to see the rain

spreading down the peninsula and it's been hit or miss in parts of the east bay so as you're driving to work this morning, plan on a soggy commute. you'll have to turn on the windshield wipers at time moving across the bay bridge and the north bay along with showers moving in. i'll be tracking this. we'll talk about more rain in the forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've been watching a traffic alert. what's going on now? >> kari, we have a traffic alert, a lot of activity for the tri-valley. let's look at the big view of the bay. overall a majority of drivers on the roadway don't have a problem. but as we get over to the dublin interchange you see why there's an alert for west 580 traffic jammed up approaching 680. the semitruck involved and middle lanes are block. folks are shifting over to 84. you see more slowing down to sunol and then i've circled a car fire over there approaching schaefer or eden canyon and that is distracting folks as well.

580 to the bay bridge is just fine. a live look shows you outside as well 580 at dublin slows down. the bay bridge toll plaza, the conditions are the issue with the slicker roadways. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 6:31. we begin with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez in san jose. we know one staff member has died from the covid outbreak that we first told you about happened over the weekend. >> kris, this outbreak is big this is 44 cases of kaiser workers and then the way it began is mind-boggling as well. >> reporter: yeah. i mean, this is a very bizarre case. we know that the woman who died was a registration clerk who was working in the hospital emergency room on christmas day, and she died of complications of covid infection just yesterday. she was one of 44 people, employees, infected and tested positive for covid-19.

they all worked on christmas day. and that's worth mentioning because kaiser and the public health officials are now investigating whether an employee who was looking to spread cheer in an air powered christmas tree costume spread the coronavirus around the e.r. several e.r. workers talked with nbc bay area and told us that they think another reason could be that there was a respiratory treatment in a room that was not intended for that. that will be part of the investigation as well. but overall they say they are worried for their patients. >> if we got second with minimum protection, and the patients have less protection, i'm concerned there might be a big outbreak amongst the patient population and also they may have a worsening case of this than some of us have. >> reporter: kaiser administrators told us they are reaching out to patients who may have been exposed to covid starting with the people who were in the emergency room on christmas day, and they also tell us that the e.r. is getting

a deep clean. now there is never a good time for a covid surge or a cluster as big as this one, but as of yesterday there were only 34 beds in intensive care units in all hospitals in all of santa clara county. that is not enough for the population that we have right now and certainly not enough for the people who have infected if their situation and their complications worsen. so do what you can to slow the spread because there isn't enough capacity for everyone, and certainly our hearts go out to the family of that woman who is working on christmas day in the emergency room and paid with her life. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. we do have bob redell tracking icu bed availability in the entire bay area. he'll have a live report in about ten minutes for us. well, there are now nearly 285,000 confirmed bay area infections. the number of dead now stands at more than 2,600 including three

people who recently died in berkeley. in the meantime according to "the press democrat" the largest homeless shelter in sonoma county has temporarily stopped accepting people due to a covid outbreak there. 11 infections are now being confirmed at samuel l. jones hall. the shelter is owned by the city of santa rosa t. >> governor gavin newsom expected to update california's response to the pandemic today at noon. we'll bring you that news conference on nbcbayarea.com. right now about 8% of icu beds in our region are open that is what -- well, let's talk about a small business protest as well. there are small businesses that are planning to protest at city hall today on the steps of city hall. this will be their second protest. parents in marin county get a better sense of when or if schools are going to open. marin county schools hold a virtual town hall this afternoon with county public health leaders that will include an update on covid cases and question and answer sessions.

many schools will resume distance learning but not in-classroom education following the extended holiday break. two teenagers are now recovering after they were shot while driving through pleasanton. investigators say several shots were fired near stone ridge and gibraltar drove not too far from creekside park. the victims managed to pull over on 580 eastbound, called for help. the victims, a man and woman, both 18 years old, both are expected to survive. police say it's believed the shooting was targeted. so far no arrests. the parolee accused in the new year's eve hit-and-run that killed two people in san francisco may be formally charged as soon as today. troy mcalister is accused of being drunk when he drove a stolen car through a red light plowing into two women. one victim, 27-year-old hanako abe, grew up in japan and lived in the city. the other is identified as 60-year-old elizabeth platt.

authorities say mcalister is a repeat offender police arrested several times since april when he was released from a five-year prison sentence. and despite recent criticism district attorney chesa boudin tells us everything was done to send him back into custody. >> all of us did what we could. we tried to intervene and prevent the criminal conduct that so tragically cost two lives on new year's eve. what we did was not enough. >> "the chronicle" reports mcalister stole the car from a woman he had recently met on a dating site and was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. it's 6:37. how about some nice news, a fully recovered fox is headed back to the wild. back in september this little fox was badly burned in the north complex fire in butte county. you can see all four paws were burned and bandaged up. the wildlife rescue says after six weeks he's fully recovered

about those conspiracy theories but a pretty bold ask just days before congress certifies the results. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. because we won the state. i only need 11,000 votes. fellas, i need 11,000 votes. give me a break. there's nothing wrong with saying that, you know, that you've recalculated. >> well, mr. president, the challenge that you have is the data you have is wrong. >> reporter: now, democrats obviously -- republicans not answering a lot of questions, but democrats say they are not surprised at the content of the president's phone call. >> i actually wasn't surprised by this call.

the president has shown us a long, long time ago who he is. >> reporter: and then all of this spilled over onto twitter where the president called about his phone call. it happened saturday. we learned about it on sunday. the president saying it was the secretary of state who wouldn't answer questions or, as he put it, couldn't answer questions about these allegations of fraud, again, unfounded. the secretary of state responding on twitter that the truth will come out. >> even the president's own lawyers, tracie, saying there was no fraud when they talk about it in court. so tomorrow, i mean, georgia is a hotbed, tomorrow is the senate run-off in georgia. what impact will the phone call have on tomorrow's race? >> reporter: so it's interesting. a lot of republicans are concerned that the president continuing to focus on the election, unfounded fraud, saying that things didn't go right in georgia, could actually

discourage republicans from coming out to vote which could give democrats an advantage if they are energized to do so. the president says he will talk about this call tonight when he's in georgia. he's doing a rally on behalf of the two republicans running in the run-off races that's happening tomorrow. that run-off, both of them, and then president-elect joe biden is going to be in georgia, too. something on behalf of the democrats. so some high-profile support for all four of these candidates within the next 24 hours. the run-off races could decide the balance of power in the u.s. senate. scott? >> we will check back with you tomorrow morning. tracie potts in washington, thank you. it is 6:45. the united kingdom is rolling out the oxford astrazeneca vaccine. dialysis patient brian pinker was first to get the shot administered by a chief nurse at

oxford university hospital. this vaccine is cheaper and easier to use since it does not require the super cold storage needed for other approved vaccines. you may recall the trials here were temporarily halted in the u.s. after some patients became ill. american regulators have not yet approved it. the u.s. rollout is only just starting. operation warp speed not moving as quickly as hoped. one solution may be to double the number of people getting their first dose while not reserving the second dose for the follow-up shot. that in the meantime covid cases still surging here in the bay area but there is a little glimmer of -- bob, i understand there's a slight uptick in the number of icu beds available. >> reporter: correct. this is not to downplay the severity of what's going on. many of the hospitals here in the bay area are still overwhelmed but over the week

the standard icu capacity jumped slightly. it jumped more than 3%. this was saturday, going into sunday. right now 8.4% of icu beds in our region are open. that is well below the 15% threshold, but it's up from 5.1% where it was the day before on saturday. as we look at the counties here in the bay area, napa at zero percent icu capacity. contra costa, marin, santa clara, sonoma are at 10% or below. alameda and san francisco are well above 30%. we don't have updated numbers yet from san mateo or solano counties. >> so we've been 100% capacity for weeks. and the biggest strain is on the icu. we're relatively successful about getting the moderately ill patients through the emergency department and then through the hospital but these icu patients have a protracted course if they

end up on the ventilator that ends up being weeks of care. >> reporter: that was dr. paul silka with regional medical in san jose, speaking about his hospital, who tells us that the biggest challenge is yet to come with what he expects to be a post-holiday surge in cases. haw ? laura? >> bob, how is the icu bed situation looking? they've had a tough go in southern california. >> reporter: a look at a map we can put up on the tv screen. you compare it to the bay area. we're at 8.4%, northern california that region, well over 35%. greater sacramento, just over 10%. san joaquin valley and southern california zero percent capacity. >> really tough to see. thank you very much, bob. it is 6:48 right now. certainly switching gears the only thing left for the 49ers

not a whole lot going on here except for some off and on light rain. but we're also getting those high winds that are blowing that rain. and we're seeing a lot of it in parts of marin county, parts of sonoma county and as of right now napa county taking a break, but it will be heading that way soon. there's a lot more where that came from. and the activity will continue to bring us some wet weather for today but also kicking up some high waves right along the coastline. we've been tracking the dangerous waves we've seen and the potential for some of those breakers to reach over 25 feet today. you want to stay well away from the water. it will be dangerous today as well as tomorrow. all up and down the coastline. but we're also getting these high winds. check out the wind speed forecast. i'm just going to stop it right here at noon. still breezy in the east bay and the south bay and the wind

gradually starts to calm down this evening. but those winds will be high enough to really knock some stuff over out in the yard and we're dealing with that as the storm system moves through with some light rain. here we are at 1:00, 3:00, 5:00 in the morning or into the afternoon we're starting to see that rain moving through. we've already made it past the morning for the time line of those early hours. but we stop here at 7:00 and we see that a lot of the rain is out of here. we're dry tomorrow and then there will be some more scattered showers moving in by wednesday. and we're just going to see some rain every other day in the forecast as we go through the week. you can already see that up at the bottom of the screen. and the north bay will see the potential of the highest rainfall totals reach over half an inch. some spots getting three-quarters of an inch of rain as we go through this forecast. so looking at our workweek forecast temperatures in the upper 50s for highs in the inland areas. once again rain today, rain wednesday and then rain again on friday, but it looks like it

will dry out. at least now looking ahead to the weekend. so we just need to make it through these showers today and, mike, it could create some problems out there on the roads. yeah, kari, definitely. we do have big problems. they don't sound like they're directly attributable to conditions but we do have the alert for the tri-valley west 580. west 580 approaching the dublin interchange. this time around dougherty. a semitruck and nails spilled across the roadway from chp. that's closer to the dublin interchange and really jams you up a little before then. a lot of folks are choosing to use 84 as your alternate. on the other side of the dublin interchange once 580 slows, the activity still there. sounds like some brush caught on fire. i think everything is under control. the rest of the bay moves smoothly. look at the conditions. the bay bridge toll plaza, the live look shows you the rain on the camera lens and flags

flapping around. lighter traffic, be careful there. golden gate bridge shows you similar conditions. very slick into and out of the for the bay. back to you. mike, some new news this morning, julian assange cannot be extradited to the united states. that is the ruling this morning from a british judge. assange is expected to face charges of espionage and hacking government computers in the u.s. related to the publication of hundreds of thousands of leaked documents about the wars in afghanistan and iraq. american officials say assange helped chelsea manning breach the u.s. espionage act and publish classified information. he has been in custody in britain since 2019. coming up next a quick look at our top stories including a heartbreaking story out of the north bay. a family pulled under water by dangerous sneaker waves. we'll have a look at the investigation and the weather warning for all beachgoers. plus a massive outbreak between health care workers at a south bay kaiser hospital.

police are on edge after that incident in nashville. we'll continue to monitor that for you. much closer to home a live look at the san jose/santa teresa kaiser where it's facing a big covid outbreak among staff. one worker has died, dozens others are now infected. kaiser officials are investigating whether an employee looking to spread holiday cheer in an air-powered christmas tree costume spread coronavirus instead. and a warning for you that morning beachgoers warned to stay alert of those sneaker waves. it's just turned tragic in the north bay. it's heartwrenching. two children are presumed to have drowned. we know their father drowned after he went in after them. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson following that. the children have not been found but it doesn't sound good. >> reporter: good morning. yes, at this point crews are saying it's really just a recovery effort for the bodies

of those two children that were swept away near that beach near jenner. this was blind beach near jenner. they tell us they received a distress call for three people in the watts water after the tw children were swept into the water and their father jumped in to save them. at one point the father was able to grab on to the 4-year-old but was swept further out to sea. the dad did end up drowning, eventually washed up to shore. several agencies respond to continue the search for the two children but still in the water. the coast guard, the helicopter unit, state guards, lifeguard all responded, but the waves were too strong and the waves made it difficult for the surge. at this point when sunrise does happen, it's a recovery effort for those two children. right now we're not sure where the children are from. we're not sure where the family is from, but we will bring you
