to the state yesterday to deliver closing arguments for their parties. >> let's set the stage for you how we got here and why this is so important so according to georgia state rules, a winning candidate must get 50% of the vote. so none of the candidates reached that milestone back in november. >> as for today's importance, as mentioned, control of the senate is up for grabs. why? well, as it stands right now there are 50 republicans in the senate, 46 democrats plus two independents who typically vote with the democrats if both democrat senate candidates win today in georgia, there would essentially be a 50-50 tie. that would give any deciding vote to vice president-elect kamala harris and control of the senate, house and white house to democrats, so now you know why everyone in the political world is talking about this. we've got two reports for you. let's get it started nbc's blayne alexander in atlanta for us hey, blayne, good morning. >> reporter: well, savannah, good morning to you from this polling location here in south atlanta. the doors opened just minutes

ago. there were more than a dozen people who were lined up here waiting for a few minutes before the doors opened to go in and cast their ballot. but so far in early voting, the turnout that we've seen is unheard of for a runoff election and when we consider the fact that there have been not just the president, but the president-elect making their way here to the peach state in the last 24 hours, it makes it clear that the impact of this race goes far beyond georgia. this morning, once again, it's election day in georgia. >> i need you to call everybody you know and make sure they turn out to vote. >> and with control of the u.s. senate hanging in the balance, the two races have shattered records for early votes cast and campaign dollars spent >> we're going to keep georgia and we're going to save america. >> reporter: incumbent republican senators david perdue and kelly loeffler squaring off against democrats jon ossoff and raphael warnock with both sides getting a last-minute boost from the top of their party.

>> this is not an exaggeration georgia, the whole nation is looking to you. >> reporter: in his second visit to the peach state since flipping it blue in november, president-elect joe biden told voters the fate of another covid relief bill lies in their hands. >> if you send john and the reverend to washington, those $2,000 checks will go out the door restoring hope and decency and honor for so many people who are struggling right now. >> reporter: further north in a nighttime rally of his own -- >> our country is depending on you. >> reporter: president trump delivered his closing arguments for the gop candidates >> far left wants to destroy our country, demolish our history and erase everything that we hold dear. this could be the most important vote you will ever cast for the rest of your life. >> reporter: joining him on stage, senator kelly loeffler, with a virtual appearance from senator david perdue in quarantine after a close contact

tested positive for covid-19 >> simply put, we win georgia, we save america. >> reporter: the president's speech filled with false claims about the election he lost outside the rally, some supporters say doubts or not, they are not sitting this election out. >> whether it was a stolen election or not, i'm not going to sit by and just let them steal it. >> reporter: blayne, we remember those long days waiting to find out what happened in the georgia in the presidential election, so i'm imagining we shouldn't expect a result tonight necessarily. >> reporter: not necessarily, savannah you remember for the presidential election we saw the results tallied not once, not twice, but three times that's due in large part to the state-mandated audit that had to take place that's not the case this time around, but we do know there could still be a candidate requested recount. if the margin is within 0.5% of each other, then the candidate can request a recount. savannah. >> we shall see. let the voting begin

blayne, thank you. speaking of the presidential results in georgia, there are growing calls for the president to face a criminal investigation for pushing and pressuring the state's top republican election officials to overturn the result there. nbc's peter alexander is at the white house with the latest on that peter, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning to you just hours after a top republican election official in georgia publicly fact checked all of the president's outlandish conspiracy theories, falsely claiming victory, president trump got up on stage and repeated them, unloading a series of recycled lies about the election and he publicly singled out his vice president to step in to throw the election his way. something that mike pence cannot do in georgia overnight, the first words out of president trump's mouth were not true. >> by the way, there's no way we lost georgia there's no way that was a rigged election >> reporter: he was supposed to be campaigning ahead of today's

crucial senate runoffs instead the president obsessed over his election loss again, falsely claiming he won. >> and they're not taking this white house, we're going to fight like hell. >> reporter: hours after huddling with vice president pence in the oval office, the president called on pence to help deliver him a second term when the senate votes tomorrow, whether to certify the results for president-elect biden. >> i hope that our great vice president -- our great vice president comes through for us he's a great guy of course if he doesn't come through, i won't like him quite as much. >> reporter: but to be clear, pence does not have the power to change the outcome republicans are bitterly divided over the decision by 13 gop senators and more than 100 others in the house to object to the certification of biden's victory. the president still fuming after that contentious hour-long call where he tried and failed to pressure georgia republican secretary of state brad raffensperger to find the votes to overturn his defeat.

>> i just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have, because we won the state. >> reporter: raffensperger telling nbc news he does not know who released the recording but he was glad it was made public after president trump mischaracterized their conversation. >> you can't keep on taking shots from people and people keep putting out stuff that's not true we're going to respond forcefully with the facts. if people can't handle the facts, i'm sorry, but those are the facts. >> reporter: another top republican state election official methodically taking apart trump's false claims that thousands of votes were cast by dead people and unregistered voters, as well as the president's baseless claims that ballots and voting machines were testimo tampered with. >> this is all easily, provably false. yet, the president persists. >> reporter: gabriel sterling describing his exasperation

after hearing the call i screamed in my car at the radio talking about this because this has been thoroughly debunked. >> on capitol hill a couple of democrats are asking the fbi to open a criminal investigation into the president >> it is a crime to solicit election fraud, and that's what donald trump did over and over again. >> reporter: president-elect biden in georgia bashing president trump. >> i don't know why he still wants the job, he doesn't want to do the work. >> reporter: and this morning "the new york times" reports that president trump has directly pressed mike pence to find an alternative to certifying biden's win tomorrow, like preventing him from having 270 electoral votes and letting the election be thrown to the house to decide. but basically pence has to side with his boss or with the constitution here. again, he does not have the power to determine the winner. really his role is to publicly count the electoral votes, ultimately declaring joe biden president-elect. savannah. >> well, that being the case,

there's nothing that the vice president can do, what's up with the pressure tactic? what's the end game there? >> reporter: well, it's a good question clearly the president is frustrated about this. he seems to believe, certainly his supporters believe that they can change the outcome here. but the stakes going into today are so sig of what happens tomorrow. consider what the former president barack obama said. he put it bluntly on twitter yesterday. he said these stakes cannot be higher. control of the senate dictates what gets done. if the democrats win both seats in georgia today, that's going to help joe biden's ability to pursue his agenda. that could include tax increases on the wealthiest americans, more immediate covid relief, billions of dollars to combat climate change as biden wants to do and the ability to appoint the judges that biden wants to the federal bench. if republicans hold on by the smallest of margins today, they can try to thwart biden's policies. no matter what happens, it will be a nearly evenly divided chamber where any defection on either side could swing key

votes. >> peter alexander at the white house, peter, thank you. now to the country's new wave of the coronavirus crippling hospitals nationwide. monday broke new records. more than 120,000 americans hospitalized. in some areas, sick patients are being turned away because there simply are not enough resources to care for them. we have two reports for you. we're starting with nbc's erin mclaughlin who is in los angeles at the epicenter of the current crisis. good morning, erin. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. here in california and in states across the country, hospitals are at the brink. they're still dealing from fallout from thanksgiving. now with another virus spike expected from the latest holidays, doctors say in some places, our health care system won't be able to cope, and that could impact us all. this morning after weeks of holiday travel, mass gatherings and anti-mask protests, doctors in southern california are sounding the alarm. >> we haven't yet seen a

post-december surge. if we do, on top of where we are now, we will go under. the health care system will collapse. >> reporter: here morgues are overflowing. the california national guard now called in to help transport bodies. in l.a., hospitals are so packed, ambulances sometimes must wait up to eight hours to offload patients and have been told not to transport patients with virtually no chance of survival. >> if you think that covid-19 is not going to affect you or your loved ones, you're absolutely wrong. we continue to see patients following car crashes, falls. patients still come in with heart attacks and strokes. we're simply running out of the resources, staff and personnel to care for these other medical emergencies. >> reporter: the crisis in care spreading from coast to coast. in arkansas, overwhelmed hospitals are being forced to divert ambulances to other states. >> that transport will take in excess of six and a half hours to complete.

>> and that's because there is nowhere else for this patient to go? >> right. >> reporter: in new york, hospitalizations are up 96% in the last month. it's now the fourth state to confirm a case of the more contagious uk virus strain. the patient, a 60-year-old man, is affiliated with this jewelry store in saratoga springs. officials believe he got the virus through community spread. in washington state, a covid outbreak at this vancouver hospital is suspected of infecting 30 patients and staff. and in florida, a warning straight from the icu. >> i didn't wear a mask. i should have. >> reporter: chuck stacy was hospitalized with covid on new year's day. he now needs a machine to help him breathe. >> i believed that it was all going to go away, that it was political. you don't want to end up like me.

>> reporter: you may remember the stark sight of the "usns mercy" arriving here in los angeles at the beginning of the pandemic. county officials have petitioned for the navy to send the ship's medical staff back. doctors here say they desperately need more medical personnel to handle the explosion of covid cases. hoda. >> erin mclaughlin for us, thank you. as for the vaccine rollout, officials across the country are scrambling to speed up the distribution process that has been plagued by problems so far. tom costello is on that part of the story this morning. tom, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. it's now been three weeks since americans first started receiving the vaccine. but listen to this, so far only 30% of the vaccines that have been distributed have actually gone into arms. and only four states right now, four have distributed at least 50% of their vaccines. now federal health officials are working with the states to pick up the pace. >> no! >> reporter: it's the key to stopping the pandemic, but distributing the covid-19 vaccines is adding more stress

to a health care system almost pushed to its limits. >> only 1% of the u.s. population has received a dose of the vaccine, so we're just at the beginning. >> reporter: overnight dr. anthony fauci suggested the vaccination pace is about to pick up. >> if we get back on pace, good. if not, we have to start looking at what the reason for that is and how we're going to correct it. >> reporter: with cases and fatalities rising fast, state officials are under pressure to speed up the process. >> they have to move the vaccine and they have to move the vaccine faster. >> reporter: new york governor andrew cuomo says hospitals will face a $100,000 fine if they don't get the vaccine out fast enough. >> we've been here two days. >> reporter: in florida, some churches and testing sites will be used as vaccination centers after senior citizens in the state have waited for hours in long lines, only to be turned away. some camping in their cars overnight. >> got here at 2:00 a.m. last night. we were told to leave at 6:30 because there wasn't enough

shots available. >> reporter: meanwhile, the medical workers who received their first doses three weeks ago -- >> thank you. >> reporter: -- are now getting the required second doses. many urging fellow americans to trust the system. >> there will be sufficient supply. i want to tell people be patient, be persistent, and go and get this vaccine. >> reporter: but patience is wearing thin. of 15 million doses distributed, only 4.5 million people have received one. former fda commissioner and pfizer board member scott gottlieb suggests using national pharmacy chains earlier than had been planned to reach even more people. >> i think you'd find that a lot of the very motivated individuals who will come out and get the vaccine will be among the senior citizens. >> reporter: moderna says it will boost vaccine production by 20%, with the u.s. securing 100 million doses by the end of march, another 100 million by june. the challenge, actually getting those doses into americans' arms. you know, there has been some

talk about whether they should cut the vaccine dose or maybe not provide the second follow-up dose in order to spread the vaccines more widely to more people more quickly. but the fda has come out this morning and said the following. it says that the fda could not run the risk of placing public health at risk and undermining the vaccine, so it would not recommend that course of action at this point on cutting vaccine doses. hoda, back to you. >> i hate, tom, to complicate matters even more. this weird story out of wisconsin where a pharmacist was accused of trying to destroy hundreds of vaccine doses, a pharmacist. what do we know about that? >> reporter: yeah, and he did and he was in court yesterday virtually. his name is steven brandenburg. the police say that he is an admitted conspiracy theorist and that he took these vials out of the refrigerator because he didn't think that the vaccine was safe. well, the vials went bad because of course you have to keep those vials at a very cold temp. so you had 500 doses that went bad. he's now facing several charges,

opening up this morning about the painful loss of their 25-year-old son, thomas, who died on new year's eve after a painful battle with depression writing in a touching tribute that he had a perfect heart, a perfect soul, an outrageous an relentless sense of humor and a dazzling radiant mind. the two-term congressman and his wife, a former top treasury department official, detailing their son's battle with depression writing that he began to be tortured later in his 20s by a blindingly painful and merciless disease called depression, and adding on the last hellish brutal day of that god awful miserable year of 2020, we also lost our dear, dear beloved son. and despite very fine doctors and a loving family and friendship network, the pain became overwhelming and unyielding and unbearable at

just clarify that confusion. >> hoda, i wish i could clarify the confusion, but it's confusing across the country it's probably going to stay that way for a little while here's why it's state by state, sometimes county by county on how they do this and it depends on the delivery they're getting from the distribution of the vaccine. your best bet is first talk to your employer. talk to them to find out when you can get it and if they're giving it to people. then check with the state public health websites. they're going to have some information and might direct you to the county health websites and talk to your doctor. you definitely want to get it when you're in your phase. but you might have to do your homework and some leg work to try to find out exactly when you can and where you can get it. >> along the lines of receiving the vaccine, we've seen how slow the rollout is, there are not many vaccines that are given out in the united states i think the number is 4 million or something like that when do you anticipate most americans will be vaccinated >> hoda, i think most americans will get vaccinated by summertime you heard earlier about the

confusion in the rollout not just here but globally and how slow it's going. the ball will start rolling a lot faster and smooth out. the systems will get under control. i still think it's going to be springtime before the general public can start getting it and probably summertime. dr. fauci said fall. i think that's probably a little late my guess is probably summertime by the time most of us end up getting it. >> one last very, very popular question on instagram, when should we expect to not be wearing masks anymore? >> this is the biggest question i get from a lot people, when can we ditch these masks i think we'll have to keep masks here for a while, especially after you get the vaccine. my guess is going forward masks will be in our lives probably for the rest of your lives every now and then >> all right, dr. torres, thank you. let's turn to vicky nguyen who has insight into our social lives in 2021. vicky, let's start with school president-elect biden saying in the first 100 days he'll try to get the majority of schools open what has to take place for that to happen? >> the key is testing, testing,

testing. we're not talking about standardized testing, but this is a cornerstone of biden's plan, which is getting our kids back in school safely requires rapid, reliable and frequent testing of our teachers and our staff. that's one to two times a week politico says this comes at a cost of $8 to $10 billion. for the first three months big game-changer after those three months because hopefully by then we'll see the vaccinations the cdc said put teachers right after health care workers and the elderly. let's get our teachers vaccinated we're seeing states totally on board saying, yes, fast track the teachers that will change the school environment drastically. >> governor cuomo here in new york, there's a buffalo bills playoff game and he's going to do a rollout trying to test 6,700 fans this could open up the gateway for us going back to concerts and sporting events. >> absolutely. and dr. anthony fauci says he thinks by fall we could see full stadiums, full arenas.

a lot depends on can we pick up the pace getting everyone vaccinated if we can by summer, fall looks very realistic it's going to be up to the sports leagues the nba went back and they were all in the bubble. nfl did it very differently. if you have an open air arena, that's a different restriction and perhaps you can relax the guidelines a little bit more than if your sport is played in a smaller, enclosed space. fingers crossed we get our sports back by the fall. >> finally one of our viewers, caitlin, has a question regarding weddings let's take a look. >> my name is caitlin. as a summer of 2021 bride, do you think our venue will be able to have half capacity and dancing with masks on by the summer >> i really hope so. we're talking about early summer versus later summer. that's six to eight months from now. a lot of things could be different. the f word of 2020 remains the f word of 2021, flexibility. so talk to your venues, having options, hoda. ask them what is the refund, what is the fee if i have to change my dates, whether it's a save the date or your honeymoon.

you just want to know what the plan a, the plan b and plan c will be so you're not paying extra out of pocket. at the end of the day when it comes to 2021 even with vaccinations, it's a personal risk calculation for your household. maybe some things are safer for you, maybe some things are safer for me but we've got to assess what we're comfortable with. >> the chicken dance at the end of the wedding is silly enough, i can't imagine with a mask. thank you for some great tips. what changes may be coming to the workplace that's a question stephanie ruhle will answer for us okay, here's our numero uno question will companies require, require their employees to get vaccinated >> well, companies can in december the federal government said a company can ask their employees to get vaccinated if you're not comfortable, your employer could say, well, we're not ready to have you back in the office like all things we really want the answer to, it's complicated. it's not completely black and white. so if there are religious

reasons or health reasons why you can't, you want to work with your employer and hopefully find other accommodations. >> okay. a lot of people want to know, steph, what the future of the workplace is like. a guy named steve sent us a question let's hear it. >> hi, my name is steve. could it be time for more companies to consider moving work to people's home offices? many people are more productive there and it could be considered a cost-saving effort in terms of office space. >> we're already seeing a mix. a lot of companies are phasing their employees back google, for example, is doing a collaborative workweek where you're in the office for a few days and working from home a couple other days. to steve's point, we will likely see in the future companies start to shrink their office space. but i wouldn't expect it soon. nobody really wants to share desks right now. the last thing to think about when we do go back to work, dr. torres said it, we will likely be wearing masks at work if you take public transportation, you're definitely going to be wearing a mask then. >> just quickly, steph, this is a biggie

>> martha, i know you celebrated new year's with your family, but you also celebrated with one snoop dogg >> oh, yes. >> i saw snoop dogg doing a little thing on cnn with andy cohen talking about -- he was speaking some tales about you. what was it like spending a little bit of new year's with snoop? >> well, i rushed home from new york i had dinner at my daughter's with the grandchildren, we opened presents because we celebrated christmas on new year's eve this year then i rushed home and had to get gussied up for snoop's new year's eve party we had so much fun i just set up all the lights myself i had nobody to help me except my driver, carlos. and so we did the whole segment right in my dining room and it was so much fun. and i posted it. i have a record number of likes on that post. >> of course you do. >> no surprise there so, martha, with this new book you've got all these tips.

how did you winnow them down over all this time you've accumulated so many amazing tips just for a good life >> well, this is the 30th anniversary of our magazine where i debut good things. and so every single issue has more than, oh, probably five good things in it. so count that times 30 times 12 times 30 and we have a lot of good things that we have accumulated. many things that i just found in my own kitchen, in my own home all kinds of editors came up with other good things so in the book there are 500 good things that will make your life nicer, easier, more practical, and you'll be surprised at how easy it is to create your own good things once you start in on this trend >> very good. >> and good things -- good things -- i start off with my best good thing, which is green juice every morning. and everything that you have in

your fridge can go into the green juice if it's fresh. i tend to go totally organic i grow a lot of the stuff. but i use celery don't cut the leaves off wash the stalks and just put it right into the juicer. this is an easy juicer to use, so i like to use this. make sure you put it in, see the juice coming out and spinach. oh, i love spinach spinach leaves right in there. >> look at that. >> stick it right in there how do you sweeten it? what do you add to make it sweet, martha? >> and then a cucumber put a cucumber in there. that's delicious. >> how do you make it taste good what do you add? >> and i put a little bit of ginger, a little bit of orange

put that right in there. >> that has as much horsepower as the snowplow. >> and you will have the mos delectable green juice ever. >> put some tequila in it. >> you could you could make your cocktails with that. and all the ground-up vegetables go right into the compost. do not waste that. you can put that right in the compost. >> all right >> and then another thing is, you know, you're trying to figure out what to serve people. i love to make breakfast for people and so i have my own eggs but just take a dozen eggs, heat beat them up and find in your refrigerator cooked steamed broccoli, some beautiful peppers. i have red, orange and yellow, some cheese. if you have some bacon left over from yesterday, some herbs, fresh herbs, put fresh herbs and olive oil, season it up, and then the fritatta is so easy in

a buttered dish like this. just pour in your dozen eggs, have your oven preheated to 400 degrees. >> did you get those fresh herbs from snoop >> you could, but don't tell anybody. you want to have a lot of happy guests, you do that. >> nice. >> and then a little bit of vegetable. and a big thing that we're doing nowadays is making these fritattas and then making delicious sandwiches out of them here's a sandwich. look, this is the baked fritatta on whole wheat bread. >> that looks real good. >> it's so good. and so you finish this, put this in the oven. i would top it with some nice grated cheese. and you can make several of these and just serve them. i eat them all day long. i like them hot out of the oven, i like them warm and i like them cold >> martha, before you go real quick, the trick with the mustard jar, what do you do with an almost-empty mustard jar?

we're back with our start "today" series focused on making 2021 your best year yet. >> yes. >> this morning a popular exercise trend right now, which is military-inspired workouts. >> destiny monroe is an army veteran, a certified fitness trainer and an influencer with half a million followers on instagram. she lives, breathes the motto no excuses, only results. >> destiny joining us from her home in dallas she's got some great moves to get us all in shape. destiny, i think people might be watching this and thinking, oh, my god, i'm intimidated. i can't do a military kind of workout. is this just for people who are kind of already in shape or can you start from zero? >> oh, definitely not. you can start from zero. you do not have to be from a military background to be fit. also, happy new year i hope everyone is doing great today. >> happy new year.

>> destiny, happy new year to you too. >> so, destiny, you say you should have three different tips to set different things, like, first of all, you say set goals. >> yes so you want to set your daily fitness goals, right you want to be intentional with your training. you want to hold yourself accountable. and also you want to take progress photos. i would recommend every two weeks. >> every two weeks take a picture? >> yes, so every two weeks you want to take a picture you want to do that so that can help boost your confidence and show your progress here are your three main poses that i would recommend you want to stand straight, your hands raised and you want to do a side-view with your hands raised forward and do a back view with your hands raised to the sides and that will be for setting your fitness goals. >> that would be terrifying, destiny. that's what that would be. >> we're already afraid of you. >> destiny, happy new year,

thank you for your service too also, by the way let's talk about the nutrition and how that coincides with your workouts. >> most definitely, the nutrition is the most important aspect of your fitness journey you want to make sure that you have a proper one that aligns specifically with your training goals. say, for instance, do you want to lose weight you want to be in a calorie deficit of 500 calories daily. if you want to put on muscle, you want a calorie surplus where you have 500 plus calories a day. and remember the cardinal rule, 80% nutrition and 20% fitness. >> 80% nutrition, 20% fitness. >> that is a real number >> calories in, calories out. >> yes. >> what i like is one of your exercises is something we've been doing since we were kids but you do it with a twist it's the jumping jack. >> yes, most definitely, the jumping jack, which is a great full body cardio move. it's also one of the core exercises in the military. so here we go. you're going to go 1, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, 3

if you want to intensify that and add a twist, we'll cross your arms and your legs. so 1, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 3, 2 -- >> so you have to be coordinated. >> yes, you do yes. again, these moves can be done at home, in the gym or outside now, another one that we're going to do are the body weight squats these are really great, especially for our women, but men, y'all can do it too because y'all need strong glutes so those are going to target the glutes, quadriceps and hamstrings make sure your knees are outside your pinky toes, your neck and spine are aligned and you're engaging that core when you're going down, drop into that hole, come up and squeeze at the top of those glutes it should look like a cabbage right here. >> a cabbage mine looks more like a cauliflower.

>> oh, cauliflower. >> destiny, how many should you do >> i would recommend at least 20 reps so that way you can feel that burn. yes, oh, yes. >> destiny, what are the surrenders >> oh, the surrenders. so those are going to be more intensified for the squats so you want to make sure you have something down here to protect your knees get down on your knees, interlock your hands, place them behind your head and go up one knee at a time make sure you stay low so that way you can feel that burn in those glutes and quadriceps. >> it hurts just looking. >> yes, most definitely. >> what we've learned from this entire thing is you're in great shape, destiny. >> you're amazing. i want to be like you. >> you're incredible we want to say thank you so much, destiny, we appreciate it. you can learn more about destiny's workouts on our website. thank you, destiny. >> thanks, destiny. >> thank you. she'll reveal her bois here. ok ♪ ♪

today. as we go through the forecast, we're dry today, but a new storm will be moving in by tomorrow. we can see it off the coast. it first moves into the north bay and works its way across the rest of the bay area. as we go hour by hour, we're going to see the rain moving into the north bay during early tomorrow afternoon. here we are stopping it at 1:30 as we are going to see some pockets of heavy rain near santa rosa and approaching napa. a lot of the rain falls apart as it moves into parts of the peninsula and east bay. not expecting a lot of that rain in parts of the south bay. it's going to be a quick-moving system and weakening as it passes. we're dry, mostly on thursday, but by early friday morning, a new storm system will come in. we go into the weekend with temperatures in the upper 50s. morning temperatures in the low 40s, and san francisco will see temperatures in the mid-50s over the next several days.
