47 degrees right now and let's see how the rest of the bay area is waking up. 32 degrees in novato. oakland, 38, concord, 37. we are seeing in addition to cold temperatures a couple of areas of low visibility, including, novato, napa. patchy fog in san francisco, so use caution. just know, don't turn on your high beams it makes it worse. it makes it more blinding. just use your regular headlights and drive with a good amount of distance. now, we will be seeing plenty of sunshine but we're going into the bit of a drying trend ahead. that's actually going to warm up some of these temperatures to potentially near records heading into the workweek. full forecasts in a few minutes. >> thank you so much. we begin with a developing story where at least one person was killed in the early morning freeway crash. just before 1:00 this morning,

alameda fire and chp responded to this. on southbound 880 near marina boulevard. seven people were hurt inside three heavily damaged cars. two passengers were ejected. one was declared dead at the scene. the six other people were taken to the hospital. this morning some lanes may still be closed on southbound 880 as the chp investigates. now to our continuing coverage of the riot on capitol hill. the fbi says they have arrested more than 50 people who were involved. some being charged in federal court. others in superior court. the fbi says this is quote, just the beginning. "today in the bay's" ian cole reports on disturbing video including the deadly shooting of one of the victims. >> reporter: videos shows the terrifying moments the rioters reached the door of the speaker's lobby. in a tense standoff, officers tried to keep their cool.

the crowd advances and smashes windows when capitol officers move inside to make way for tactical officers. the mob begins climbing towards them through the door. at that moment, an officer on the other side opens fire. ashli babbitt of san diego falls to the ground. she later dies. the officer who fired his gun now on administrative leave. the fbi says dozens have been arrested for wednesday's rampage. including richard barnett of arkansas photographed in speaker pelosi's office charged with stealing her mail and charged, lonnie coffman of alabama for possession of 11 molotov cocktails, handguns and a semi-automatic weapon. nationwide, hundreds of federal agents are pursuing riot suspects. tim gallagher, the former fbi special agent in charge in d.c. >> this is an act of domestic terrorism. this is what the fbi will be focused on 24/7 to both look

the people who did get in. >> reporter: one senator, lisa murkowski, said that the president should resign. i want him out. he's caused enough damage. lindsey graham heckled at an airport for criticizing the president. >> traitor, traitor! >> reporter: said another partisan impeachment would further divide the country. at the capitol, the flag at half-staff for officer sicknick who died. sicknick's family said he is a hero and that's what we want people to remember. ian cole, nbc, bay area news. now that twitter what permanently suspended president trump's personal account, he says he's in talks with other social media platforms or may launch his own. in a statement, twitter says it ultimately took this step because of the risk of further incitement of violence. after the move, president trump then used the government-owned potus account to condemn the ban accusing the company of

violating his first amendment rights and twitter removed the tweets last night. many supporters agree that the president is being censored. experts say it's within the company's rights to do it. >> they have the right, and they have no legal compulsion to provide services to anybody. so i don't think it's a question of legality. i think you can look at whether it's good policy, whether this is how we want these services to be operating. >> google is also making moves suspending parler from the google play app store until they develop moderation policies that prevent people from organizing violent acts. and twitter also suspended several accounts connected to the qanon conspiracy theory. they include michael flynn, former national security advisers who was recently pardoned by president trump. attorney sidney powell who tried unsuccessfully to overturn election results. and ron watkins, associated with

the dark web. it has been a long week and we expect more major developments this weekend. we hope that you will stay with us for the latest on air, online, and everywhere else on our social media platform so you can head to nbc bay area.com. now to our continuing coverage of the coronavirus pandemic. we are now confronted with that dreaded post holiday covid surge. our state alone reported 50,000 new cases yesterday. that is the most we have seen in a week. you can see on this graph most states this week were between 30 to 35,000 cases per day. it is likely our stay at home order will remain in place. we are waiting for word on that today. we are nowhere close to where we need to be for it to be lifted. as a whole, the bay area has 3% standard icu beds open. that number has to be at least 15% before our stay at home order can be lifted. there is pushback this morning against the state's stay at home orders.

several restaurants in downtown pleasanton are allowing outdoor dining. the businesses said they decided to do so on the same day they had anticipated restrictions would be lifted. we found restaurants including the side track bar and grill. last night the owner allowed outdoor dining only after allowing only takeout. >> the fact that we ramped up, hired people back with the hopes that the she wanter in place was a three-week time frame i felt we were right to open on friday. >> in a press release, alameda county public health department says the state's regional stay at home order will remain in effect until lifted by the state. the state will not lift the order until the icu capacity meets or exceeds 15% and again that is not the case here in the bay area. we are waiting word from the governor today on how long the stay at home order will remain in effect.

clara county to get his. along with his first shot of the vaccine. >> i didn't think i'd be able to get it. i thought i was in a later tier. >> reporter: the state has expanded the eligibility of phase 1-a to include all health care workers like kevin who is a dental worker. the vaccinations will not expand to the next group until this group is completed and health care organizations across the bay area are already sending out messages to members like this mass email from sutter hill. group 1-b which includes those 65 to 74 and teachers will soon be able to book online. santa clara county health plans to open the second evacuation center, adding to the capacity private groups like walgreens and cvs and others. >> we talked about this more. like for example, our private

check out walnut creek. this is beautiful. i believe this is a similar shot to the one that kira was talking about. 37 degrees. the fog layer there and the pink candy cotton skies. there we go. right now, the current temperature is 30s in novato, 32 degrees. napa, 38. concord, 37. 40s in the south bay. we are seeing a big difference in terms of the past 24 hours. take a look at the temperature drop compared to where we were at this same hour yesterday. 16 degrees colder right now in novato. oakland, 14 degrees colder. napa, 10 degrees colder. so we're heading into a bit of a dry spell. the high pressure will roll in and once it rolls in we're going to see a warm-up headed into the afternoon. so i was talking about that visibility so keep that in mind if you're headed to san francisco or novato or napa, down to a quarter of a mile when it comes to the visibility. so drive with caution. let's talk about doppler radar and satellite because it sort of shows the picture of what's

going on over the bay area. things have quieted down. we have a little bit of the rain last week and overall, we're going to see a dry pattern coming up. but we have a system just to our north that could mean just showers to very far northern california. not the entire bay area. before i get to your extended forecast let's look at your microclimate highs for this afternoon. afternoon sunshine, definitely expected today. temperatures will be in the upper 50s, low 60s. oakland, 60 degrees. look at san francisco, 58 degrees. it will be such a lovely afternoon and we'll keep that trend into sunday as well. let's look at the long range outlook. as i mentioned headed into tuesday there's a system that passes farther to the north. we're talking about eureka, santa rosa. we are not worried about the

"today in the bay's" anoushah rasta talks about the challenges that the hospitals are facing. >> reporter: hospitals in california are quickly reaching their breaking point because of covid-19. some places including sonoma county are acquiring refrigeration trailers in case the morgues reach the limits. >> we find ourselves in terms of the numbers at a point where we are standing on a beach and

watching a tsunami. >> reporter: that's the president and the ceo of california's hospital association speaking to reporters today on the phone about the biggest challenges hospitals and staff are dealing with right now. one of those problems is something this woman map dealing with since the start of the pandemic. staffing. >> i go in and there's one nurse. i'm doing the job of two nurses. >> reporter: she's a registered nurse in the emergency room the hospital. she is exhausted. >> we start off with one or two patients and then the er got overwhelmed. we are dealing with patients in and out. nurses getting sick, nurses need to take time off because of their families. >> reporter: california's hospital association argues another challenge includes some state day to day requirements for doctors and nurses like filling out paperwork and reports. that's taking a lot of time away they say from caring for

patients. >> if we can take the nurses and the doctors who are already taxed and spend more of their time on providing care and simply postponing the requirements, lifting them for now until we're over this peak, we will be able to maximize the care that can be provided to californians. >> reporter: the other big problem is sending sick people to the right place so they're not flooding hospitals if they don't need to be there and transitioning patients out of hospitals places like skilled nursing facilities so they don't stay longer than needed. california hospital association says it expects 15,000 new patients to check in to hospitals across california within the next ten days. anoushah rasta, nbc bay area news. there's pushback against the stay at home order. restaurants in the east bay are allowing the outdoor dining and they decided to do so last night on the day that many had anticipated restrictions would be lifted. we found a few restaurants in

with all the heavy news of the week, many of us really needed this happy ending. the best warriors game of the young season. if only a playoff game at chase center, the warriors long-time official scorekeeper fred kast, the san jose resident has been keeping score for 57 years and this was his last game. it was a good one. they sent him off in style in the second half. the warriors overcame a 22-point deficit against the clippers. steph curry led the come back, scoring 38 points on the night. see that, andrew wiggins hits that dagger three and they outscore the clippers 52-20 in the final 15 of the game. warriors beat the clippers 115-105. they are now 5-4 on the season. and it's cold. we have a little bit of fog out through portionness of the north bay but we'll warm up nicely

so pretty cold right now and here's a look at the 24 hour temperature change. novato, 16 degrees. oakland 14 degree tell temperature drop and let's look at the vitzability because we've got a quarter of a mile in napa. a quarter of a mile in terms of visibility so just slow it down and drive with caution this morning. we are going to get into a bit of a drying trend ahead as high pressure continues to roll in. and this is what's going to happen with our afternoon. we're going to see a lot of sunshine. temperatures are going to climb up into the high 50s, low 60s for the san jose. livermore, 60 degrees. concord, 63 up through napa. 62. san jose, 61. san francisco upper 50s. so we'll keep that afternoon sunshine into sunday as well. we'll have a lovely weekend ahead. here's a closer look at doppler radar. overall, very quiet. we had some of the moisture left over from some of the rain we have seen that's bringing in the

teacher development and he had already unveiled plans to ask the legislature for $2 billion in incentives to get districts to open up for younger students by february. >> i think that what you're going to see now is people really scrutinizing this -- the funding that the governor is offering to incentivize people to expedite the return to school. >> reporter: there were requirements for testing and covid safety plans, but this week superintendents from seven large districts sent a letter to the governor saying the school for all plans fails to address the urban districts that serve many who live below the poverty line. >> we share the same goal for safe reopening for in-person education but our approach is not to do it topdown and mandate. it's to have a collaborative framework with real incentive. >> reporter: in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area

news. a few parents protected the plans to reopen the schools. yesterday the sky ranger captured the school caravan and they drove to the state building on clay street in oakland. newsom's plan includes $2 billion for covid testing, to for ppe and for ventilation for classrooms. earlier this week, several superintendents said they supported that funding but worry that the plan doesn't address the disproportionate effect it's having on low income schools of color. pfizer said there are signs that the vaccine can protect against the new more contagious strain of the vaccine. scientists from pfizer and university of texas used the blood samples from those who already received the vaccine in order to test the effectiveness on the new variant. they found antibodies were able to fend it off. the scientists warn the study is

the message once again from state health leaders is to stay close to home. we have the new updated travel advisories and californians are being asked to avoid any nonessential travel to california 120 miles beyond your home. if you're going beyond 120 miles you're required to self-quarantine for ten days. this is close to what santa clara county already require. after being closed for nearly two months, golden gate fields in berkeley will resume live racing next week. at least 300 employees contracted the virus back in november. the track owner tells us after
