violence at the capitol. protesters calling for mr. trump to be removed from office now. here's nbc bay area's christie smith. >> reporter: outside of san francisco city hall demonstrators met up, led by the group refuse fascism. >> it's extremely serious. >> reporter: they took part in a car caravan, outraged by the riot in the nation's capital and concerned about what the coming days before the inauguration might hold. >> every day trump remains in power, he poses a catastrophic danger. >> reporter: they support impeachment efforts ahead of a transfer of power and for people to speak up. >> if our democracy is going to stay intact, he's got to go. >> reporter: some say they noticed a clear difference in the response to demonstrators in washington who were in support of the black lives matter movement. >> there is no equality here. there is no equity. >> reporter: bottom line, they are deeping a close eye on developments in the nation's capital where a growing number

of lawmakers say it's time for the president to be impeached again. jackie coda is president of the tri-valley republicans and sees it this way. >> we are 100% still behind our president. >> reporter: in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. in walnut creek today another demonstration. several dozen protesters met in front of city hall. they marched through nearby streets. now, this event was called stand up to white supremacy. the protest did remain peaceful. more fallout from the riot at the capitol. oakland police says it's investigating whether some of its officers endorsed social media accounts that talked about what happened wednesday. one marched to the capitol and went on twitter in defense of the pro-trump loyalists who forced their way into the building. some former and current officers

californians sadly lost their lives to the virus. that's the most ever in a single day in california. it's an extremely stark reminder of just how dangerous the spread of the virus is right now. the news comes within hours of the state's decision to officially extend our stay-at-home order. now, this was expected. that's because our icu availability is still well below the 15% needed for it to be lifted. newsom mentioned our icu availability remains low. you can see it is at 3% in the bay area. that's the lowest it's been since our state-mandated stay-at-home order went in place. most of the bay area is in red. that means less than 15% of standard icu beds are open. counties in the single digits, san mateo, santa clara, contra costa, solano. big trouble there. take a look at napa, 0%. that means standard icu beds are full so new patients may have to

go to surge facilities. oxygen supplies are at critical levels in covid-19 hot spots across the country. hospital administrators here in california and out in arizona are reporting that oxygen use is up to four times higher the pre-covid rate. it's a problem that many doctors and nurses say they never expected to worry about until this past year. >> they're like, hey, this is our last oxygen tank, portable oxygen. and so i was like that was not something that was on my radar either in my hospital. >> in los angeles, paramedics are limited in which patients can even receive oxygen after a new order by the l.a. county emergency medical services agency. the biggest concern is for smaller hospitals, though, which may run out completely. several doctors say they are terrified that soon they'll have to start rationing life-saving care. a covid test site on the peninsula has turned into a vaccination site for frontline

workers. san mateo county opened up this location at the county's event center. there was a line of cars with people waiting to get their shot. it's all part of the county's response to ramp up its vaccination rate. the county says this site is one of a series of clinics where health care workers can get the vaccine. with the stay-at-home order extended, going outside remains a great option for people. we're in the middle of winter but today it felt very spring-like in the bay area. that's some good surfing. right now we're tracking a high surf advisory, which is good for him but it can be dangerous for the rest of us. the offramp to highway 1 to get over to stinson beach today backed up onto 101. it's been that way lately. let's get over to rob mayeda and see how long the good weather is going to last, although we need other weather. >> you mentioned the surf there, terry. we've got a high surf warning which has been upgraded through 9:00 tomorrow. that's our top concern if you're

out on the coast. you want to keep a safe distance from those rogue waves and sneaker waves as those wave heights increase through sunday so that is what we're watching very closely. as we take you out to ocean beach, you can see some of the surf in the distance. while it's not bringing us rain, all that wind offshore is bringing us the rise in the west-northwest swell. once it reaches the coast, the speed starts to slow down, wave heights build and we could see breakers tomorrow close to 25 feet and higher, so use extreme caution on the coast tomorrow. while these storms are bringing the high surf, unfortunately we're not seeing a lot of rain. we had some rain at times this week. we get one more chance at drizzle sometimes tonight. we'll take a look at this and why the week ahead could be much warmer and drier as we approach next weekend. a closer look at those drier and warmer changes ahead in our forecast coming up in about ten minutes. back to you. >> all right, rob, thanks so much. a victim of its own popularity. foothills park in palo alto is now harder to visit because of

too many visitors. cities closing the entrance gate from 10:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon on weekends and holidays. they will also charge a parking fee and lowering capacity. the closed gate caught some people off guard today. >> but it is sad because i think a lot of people have come here right now hoping to walk and they have been turned away. >> the current limit for foothills park is 750 people. that limit has been reached several times in recent weeks. in the wake of a city council decision to open the park to anybody. now, for decades-only, people living in palo alto could go there and the aclu had threatened a lawsuit. it is another sign the pandemic is hitting businesses, small and big. the golden state warriors laid off nearly 10% of its full-time employees. those layoffs impacted those mostly in ticket sales and game presentation. no one on the basketball side of operations lost their jobs.

despite completing isolation in melbourne. a third one showed up in wales. >> we have to assume these new strains will become the dominant strain and we have to assume the virus will keep changing. that's why it's really important for us to keep staying vigilant. >> health experts say along with trying to contain this vaerngt, this is the time to learn as much as possible about the strain. >> queen elizabeth and her husband received the first of two vaccine doses today. no word on which one they got but the shots were administered at windsor castle where the couple has been staying during the lockdown. they joined some 1.5 million people in britain who have gotten their first shot. meantime londoners are being urged to stay home. the city's mayor says london hospitals could be overwhelmed by that rapid spread of the virus. health leaders say one in 30 people there have contracted it. ambulances in london are now responding to as many as 8,000 calls a day.

at least one person was killed in an early morning freeway crash in the east bay. it happened about 1:00 this morning. alameda county fire and the chp responded to southbound 880 near marina boulevard in san leandro. seven people were hurt inside three heavily damaged cars. you saw some of them there. one passenger was ejected and tied at the scene. six other people were taken to the hospital. households across the bay area may finally get some fresh dungeness crab this week. dungeness crab season started september 23rd but they said prices wholesale buyers offered was too low. now that a deal is made fishermen should be getting very busy. that means you could have crab on your table as early as friday. do you have your ticket in hand? more than a billion dollars up for grabs in the lottery. tonight's powerball is worth

see plenty of sunshine around san francisco. we've got pretty comfortable temperatures today. 55 degrees. not much wind over in san francisco. more sunshine after that thick fog that set up around parts of the inland east bay valleys. currently 62. into san jose, a little breezy, northwest wind 12 miles an hour. currently 61 degrees. tonight we'll see temperatures in the 30s and mid-40s. notice the clouds coming in from the north early. we may see some drizzle at times. we'll show you the storm responsible for that coming up in a moment. for the afternoon, we should break out the sunshine, hazy skies and clearing with similar temperatures tomorrow, pretty much what you just saw, upper 50s and low 60s as we go through the rest of the weekend. so storm ranger right now not spotting very much. in fact the weather system that will be approaching us tonight is the band of high clouds you see there offshore. look very closely at the futurecast. you might miss it. if we stop this animation at about 9:00 in the morning, right there around the sonoma county coast, marin county coast, you

see that little batch of showers? what it's likely to do is take the clouds, force them over the coastal ranges. might be good enough for brief drizzle early in the day. then through the afternoon partly cloudy skies and a little breezy near some of the hilltops. you have to look really closely to spot the chances of drizzle. on this map the only measurable rainfall we're likely to see is in mendocino county. that's a trend we'll see a lot more of as we head into next week. as we look at the extended forecast, tuesday may be the best day for us to find any rain chances. i think a lot of that will be in northwestern sonoma county up towards the north coast. notice the area of orange on the map. that is high pressure. you don't want to see that mid-january. notice how it kind of anchors itself right off the coast of california. so the storm track now, unlike this last week where we had the three chances of rain next week doesn't look like much at all. in fact if we extend this out to ten days, you can see the most rain we'll find is lake county,

of transportation, where the virus could spread even further. dr. redfield is also echoing the warning from dr. anthony fauci that things will get worse before they get better. he predicted daily death counts near 5,000 in the coming weeks. federal prosecutors say three more people have been arrested and charged with crimes related to the riot at the capitol, including a man seen dragging the speaker's podium and another, you may remember this man, he wore a fur hat with horns. investigation into the deadly attack continues as calls for president trump's removal from office intensify. chris palone has the story. >> reporter: democratic lawmakers' efforts to impeach president trump is gaining momentum. 190 members have signed on as co-sponsors. the move is necessary after this speech. >> we're going to walk down to the capitol. >> reporter: and the deadly riot in the capitol that followed. >> we have a responsibility to

hold him accountable. >> reporter: a white house spokesman dismissed impeachment as a politically motivated move which would further divide the country. it comes amidst new revelations first reported by "the washington post" that mr. trump called georgia's lead election investigator last month and urged him to, quote, find the fraud as the president sought to overturn the election results. the white house has not commented. meanwhile the president's allies are decrying twitter's decision to ban him from the social media platform, depriving him of his favorite method of communicating with supporters. >> it's a sad day when big tech has more power than big government, that they can censor the president of the united states. >> reporter: twitter cited the risk of further incitement of violence by the president as the reason for terminating his account. chris palone, nbc news. it's been more than two months since joe biden became president-elect, but is two months too long for a presidential transition? one historian says it is and it may have contributed to the
