our country after wednesday's ins sur wre insurrection at the capitol. larry gerston joins us now. you have been on all weak and haven't had a break. looking back at this historic moment for our country, how do we assess this incredible event? >> you hit it,t shit, historic right word. it was a breach of civility. it brings forward three crucial points. these people wanted to overturn the will of the people. the attorney general saying the election fair but these people were not satisfied. number two, they were encouraged to march by the president. it hurts me to say that but they were encouraged to march by the president. number three, the violence was planned. you know that.
7:48 am
you know that by the knives that they brought in, the guns they brought in, the ties they brought in, the apparel they were wearing. helmets, vests, whatnot. this was a planned event. planned to do harm. planned to try to take control of the government. wow, who would ever have thought something like that in the united states of america. >> indeed. and just minutes ago it looks like james clyburn, who is a representative from south carolina, a democrat, announced that they might wait the first 100 days of joe biden's presidency in order to bring impeachment. we do know prior to this moment, this announcement that democrats have prepared an article of impeachment against the president for inciting violence, as you mentioned. why not with only ten days until the end of the administration? >> i think because feelings are
7:49 am
so raw. people are so offended. they're hurt and they're angry. the democrats see this as an assault directly on the pillars of the united states government. what could be worse but to happen by americans, by the way. the president, they say, must pay the price for his role in this. he encouraged it. he was even seen reveling in the oval office. and the house democrats feel if they don't act now that the president or future presidents will feel that they can get away with anything no matter what point in their presidency. there must be a price to pay the democrats believe. >> and is it true, you know, there's another side of the effort to impeach the president. i've seen all over social media and honestly i'm wondering how much of this is true, if president trump is impeached he will lose his pension, lose his travel allowance, lose his lifetime secret service detail
7:50 am
and lose his ability to run in 2024? >> that's true. all those things are true. and that is part of the price that you pay. republicans say to get to your question, this is overkill. yes, the president may not have used good judgment. we heard that before about this president, right? throughout the entire presidency this is what republican defenders have often said. they say, look, it's unlikely you'll get that two-thirds vote in the senate to convict. we know that's what it takes to convict. they believe that mcconnell would probably hold it up any way just so that republicans wouldn't have to choose which way to act. mind you, getting to your point that you asked at the beginning of this question, yes, the democrats can do this now or later. yes, they can literally do it after the fact to still make the president pay, if they want to wait. >> now, you know, lisa murkowski has come out to say the president should step down.
7:51 am
now just this morning pat toomey of pennsylvania, a republican, says he agrees with that, too. as you said, it will be unlikely to get that two-thirds majority, but it seems some republicans are coming around to that idea. larry, we only have one last question unfortunately. the impeachment effort notwithstanding, aside from that, what is the takeaway from this horrific event on wednesday? >> i think we need to realize we had an assault on our democracy. that is serious stuff. no one ever thought that. the last time the white house was invaded was by the british, and that was during the war of 1812. this was unheard of. this was an indication that we have a fairly sizable swath of american society that is totally alienated. we have to find a way to bring these people back and show them what it's like to work and live in a democracy. and finally, other nations are
7:52 am
looking at us differently than they ever have before. quickly, there's two big questions here. one, can president biden rise to the task? really heal as he has promised to do. and two, what will be the future of the republican party. now it's broken in two parts with the trumpers and the anti-trumpers, where they go from here, that remains to be seen. >> only time will tell. thanks. we'll be back with a final look at weather.

good sunday morning. it is a lovely start. things are pretty quiet overall. temperatures in the 30s and 40s. let's take a live look at walnut creek. the view is pretty amazing. we have cloudy conditions. don't worry, we'll see the sunshine into the afternoon. once we see that sunshine, we're going to warm up comfortably into the 50s and 60s for this afternoon. let's look live over san jose, downtown, 40 degrees. party cloudy conditions. we have dry conditions that are expected to remain for today. here's a look at the current temperatures throughout livermore, still at 35 degrees. it's cold there. morgan hill, 38. here's a closer look at doppler radar, we have a system that passes to our north, but we have a little bit of drizzle far to the north. our big concern here is not going to be any rain. it's going to be this high surf warning because of dangerous swell. we're talking about a long period swell coming from the northwest.

the north bringing a chance of showers mainly for areas north of the golden gate bridge. south of the golden gate bridge, not too concerned about rain. but we do have high pressure that will begin to dominate heading into thursday and friday. as that high pressure rolls around, we'll dry out and we'll warm up heading into thursday and friday. notice the temperature change. so again, tuesday showers to the north to wednesday morning. by thursday and friday temperatures climb into the 60s for san francisco. we're talking upper 60s for inland areas, which is above normal for this time of year. could even see a couple of 70s. that's definitely going to be something you'll notice heading into the end of the week and it will bring plenty of sunshine for next saturday and sunday. >> looks good. thanks. thanks for making us a part of your morning. we'll have more local news tonight at 4:00 p.m. that's because of the wildcard game between the browns and the steelers. we'll have a special postgame news conference at 8:30. you can stay up to date all day
