spotlight is on the senate right now the time line is up in the air for mr. trump's senate impeachment trial. n nbc's tracie potts joins us from capitol hill all right, tracie. what do we know about the senate trial? >> reporter: so, phillip, it's more of that we don't know when. the republican leader is saying there is essentially no chance that we would see a trial -- a fair or serious trial before president biden is sworn in next week on the other side t democratic leader saying this trial needs to happen, that it's important that the senate take action on this, that there will be a vote, he's promising, on both convicting the president and barring him from running again those are two separate procedures that would have to happen in the senate but mcconnell, the republican

leader, interestingly has said he is undecided on the president's guilt and wanted to hear the evidence first even though he doesn'tly's any way they can squeeze in a trial before the biden inauguration next week. we've also heard from president-elect bind who's hoping they can do both, deal with their constitutional responsibilities on impeachment, in other words hold a trial, and work on the other urgent business of the nation the urgent business, namely getting his cabinet approved there have been discussions between the biden team and congressional leaders on wherever they can split their day, whether they can hold an impeachment trial for part of the day, and the confirmation hearings and votes within the same day. >> and then, of course, the coronavirus pandemic, all of the unemployment issues, an unprecedent task ahead for this new administration.
