commute. >> i'm thinking that's why mike had me filling in. who knows. put it at that. let's take a look right now at your speed sensors, looks fantastic. so far any overnight crashes have cleared out nicely. your east bay drive times, 880 to marina boulevard and broadway 9 minutes. laura? >> thanks so much, vianey. 5:01. to capitol hill where president trump has been impeached for the second time, something never seen before. >> the city is under a huge military presence six days from the inauguration. at least 15 states sending national guard members to d.c., up to 20,000 troops will be on the ground, four times the number of u.s. troops stationed in iraq and afghanistan combined. tracie potts live on capitol hill, where do we go in the impeachment from here?

>> we know where we're going to the senate, we just don't know when that senate impeachment trial may happen, now that house has charged the president with citing insurrection, it's up to the senate to decide if he's guilty. >> reporter: president trump is waking up this morning as the first and only president to ever be impeached twice. >> today in a bipartisan way the house demonstrated that no one is above the law. not even the president of the united states. >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi made it official after ten republicans joined every democrat condemning the president for inciting last week's riot at the capitol. >> i am not choosing a side, i'm choosing truth. >> if inciting a deadly insurrection is not enough to get a president impeached than what is? >> reporter: most republicans argued this impeachment was not just about last week, but the end of a four-year vendetta by democrats.

>> it's always been about getting the president, no matter what. >> reporter: but one of the president's staunchest supporters who voted no, blamed him for the attack. >> the president bears responsibility for wednesday's attack on congress by mob rioters. >> reporter: in a videotaped speech with no media present the president never mentioned impeachment, but urged extremists headed to washington to remain peaceful. >> there must be no violence, no law breaking and no vandalism of any kind. everyone must follow our laws and obey the instructions of law majority leader mitch mcconnell says he's undecided on the president's guilt but there will be no trial before next week's inauguration. now president-elect biden says he hopes they can do double duty in a statement saying he wants the senate to hold that impeachment trial while dealing with the other urgent business

of the nation and that would include confirming his cabinet. >> traci, as far as security goes, social media has been spreading this around, last week's rioters maybe toured the capitol before the attack? >> yeah. so there are concerns there was a -- there were a large number of visitors the day before at the capitol and some of those, they believe, were part of the riots the next day. there are now more than 30 members of congress who want that investigated to see if they were there scoping out the building. >> it will be interesting, the things we learn just in the next few weeks overall. tracie potts, thank you, much. let's go to "today in the bay" sierra johnson live in san francisco with all new warnings that are being issued here in the bay area. sierra? >> reporter: yes good morning. the monitoring of those right wing radical groups has begun with one group under surveillance no stranger to the

bay area, the boogaloo bo circumstance s after a field office reports the group planned in taking part in violent rallies this sunday. that extremist group is about to have a dozen members locally and tied to fatal attacks on an officer and sheriff's department. they're tied to threats against dr. sara cody. according to a report we were referencing from yahoo! news the group hoping to be part of an armed march in d.c. and 50 state capitols on sunday. steps are being taken to reduce the risks to the public. the mayor of sacramento is asking folks to stay away from the capitol through the inauguration, explaining there will be large police presence to keep everyone safe and ahead of the inauguration, airlines are cracking down with a no tolerance policy, both in the airports and in the skies.

this comes after several lawmakers were heckled in airports on the way to the nation's capitol last week. aviation expert says employees will be enforcing rules about behavior and mask wearing. take a listen. >> now they're not giving you a warning. you're getting written up right away. it's a serious fine, $5,000, could go up to $35,000, and you could spend jail time up to five years. >> reporter: so right now, vigilance is the name of the game. there will be increased security both locally at capitols across the nation and the nation's capitol as we approach the all-important day, the transfer of power next week. we're live in san francisco, sierra johnson. a southern california professor who spoke at the rally before the riot is leaving his job. chapman university and orange county says john eastman will retire immediately. more than 150 school staff

members signed a letter calling for his firing. make sure to stay with us for continuing coverage, always updates up to the minute at nbcbayarea.com and on the nbc bay area app. to the pandemic and new hard to phantom numbers, more than 23 million americans have tested positive for covid-19. that's about 7% of the u.s. population. more than 384,000 people have died. looking at the first two weeks of the new year, 38,000 americans have died and the cdc expects another 92,000 deaths over the next three weeks. new this morning, the cdc says covid cases among younger children remain low even with more schools reopening their classrooms. the report looked at nearly 3 millioovid cases for people up to age 24, more than half, 57% involved people over 18. with about six in ten u.s. school districts having resumed

in class learning, the agency says school outbreaks have been, quote, limited. happening today, president-elect joe biden lays out more details on his plan to fight covid-19 focusing on the economic fallout. the president-elect will unveil his much anticipated stimulus proposals. many believe it will include more direct payments to struggling americans. those familiar with the legislation suggests biden's transition team hopes to receive bipartisan congressional support. pope francis has received his first dose of the covid vaccine. it happened in vatican city. he received it along with former pope benedict. in an interview on italian tv the pontiff said everyone should get the vaccine calling it an ethical option. the pope says not getting the vaccine is, quote, suicidal. anyone in california 65 and older now eligible to get that vaccine. in many cases easier said than done. up front, most bay area counties say they don't have the supply.

we know san mateo and santa clara counties are working to vaccinate a long line of health care workers but health leaders recommend people with medical insurance should call their provider. >> we don't even yet have enough doses that have been received in the county, first doses, to cover all of the health care workers in the county. >> if you have a commercial health plan, reach out to your health provider as soon as possible and see what you can do to get vaccinated. >> in a statement the san francisco covid command center is making plans to vaccinate uninsured people and working with private health care providers to speed up vaccinations. the same can't be said for l.a. county which has 800,000 health care workers, only a quarter of whom have been vaccinated. california has received about 2.5 million doses, one third of

>> all right. as we head out around san francisco and the rest of the bay area in some spots you can barely see anything. we've had really dense fog deal this morning and this shows the current visibility in miles per hour and a lot of our airports we are seeing the visibility in the north bay down to a quarter mile or less, so really dense fog as well as down to morguele hill, san martin three-quarter mile visibility. we will see it clear by late morning and where we're headed for our afternoon high temperatures. 70 degrees, the middle of january talking about 70 degree temperatures. now keep in mind that we should be at about 56, 57 degrees for a high and usually we're getting some rain, right. we're not seeing that in the forecast. in fact, as we take a look at all of the billion dollar disasters we had in 2020, there were 22, billion dollar

disasters and for us the drought and then the wildfires. this came out from noaa and they were pointing out all of these different areas across the country last year that had those disasters. hopefully we can just quiet it down for this year, but we are starting out with some really dry conditions as high pressure blocks our chances of getting ne rain as we go into at least the next week, so we'll have to watch out for the potential of more drought conditions here. as we look at our record highs that will be possible today, we'll be close as we reach into the upper 60s and low 70s. and we'll see more weather like this extending into the weekend and early next week but for some it's a long holiday weekend, we're not going to get some rain, it is nice we're going to get some comfortable temperatures. i'll have more on that coming up. vianey, what's going on for the morning commute? >> the morning commute is pretty quiet although i am taking advantage of the spring temperatures to get a little pre-spring cleaning done around here, so that's always nice. a little bit organizing.

the flint water crisis. rick snyder expected to face willful neglect of duty. others in his administration may be charged. the crisis led to an outbreak of legion air's disease. andrew yang is set to launch his campaign for mayor of new york. he made the announcement with this video shot around the big apple. yang supports a guaranteed minimum income. it's a policy touted during the presidential race. a spacex capsule splashed down in the gulf of mexico, back from the space station carrying 12 bottle of wine and hundreds grope in space. those will be planted on earth. scientists are hopeful the research may lead to new food growing methods. gift cards were yet again very popular in 2020. they were so ease to mail. >> chris ka murrah has a couple reasons to use yours as early as

this morning. yesterday anything but as history was made. it seems fairly certain a new senate trial will be held. it's likely to begin after president trump leaves office. he was impeached yesterday largely among party lines but ten republicans, including a former federal prosecutor, joined every house democrat in accusing president trump of high crimes and misdemeanors. kristen welker has more from washington. >> reporter: hi, scott and laura, good morning to both of you. president trump is waking up to that extraordinary reality he has now been impeached twice, the second time in just over a year and what makes yesterday's vote so extraordinary, it was the most bipartisan impeachment in u.s. history. every house democrat and ten republicans voting to accuse president trump of high crimes and misdemeanors. house speaker nancy pelosi making it official late wednesday, signing that impeachment into law accusing the president of inciting an

insurrection for his fiery comments ahead of the riots on the capitol just last week. now the president is facing bipartisan backlash, not only ten republicans who broke with him but republican leaders, leader mccarthy really slamming president trump for his words and actions saying that impeachment is just not the right action. that was the republican argument. all eyes now head to the senate where majority leader mitch mcconnell has said that he is not going to bring up those articles of impeachment for a trial until after president trump leaves office. he's also said he's undecided on how he will vote. just to take you inside the white house for a moment, this is the president who is increasingly isolated and defiant. unlike the first impeachment when the west wing was buzzing with legal advisors and aides and allies eager to defend president trump, yesterday this was virtually a ghost town and all of the president's surrogates were largely silent.

that is the backdrop as this heads to the senate. guys, back to you. >> thanks so much. 5:34. governor newsom suddenly opening up covid vaccinations to anyone 65 and older but the plan is being met with a little bit of apprehension among local public health leaders. kris sanchez joins us this morning. the problem is there aren't enough vaccines at this point. >> you know, public health leaders are saying how with re going to vaccinate a segment when we haven't gotten enough vaccines for our health care workers or they might deplete the reserved for health care workers. governor newsom was at a mass vaccination site yesterday when he made the announcement people 65 and up can roll up their sleeves. bay area county leaders want to know where they will get the doses for that. santa clara county is working to

vaccinate health care workers and beyond that they're planning for people 75 years and up, not 65 and up. in san mateo county leaders say they won't have enough vaccines for the first wave of the public unless they get more from the state. they are also doing a mass vaccination site for their health care workers. in alameda county the chronicle reports that the vaccine website crashed under the crush of people trying to sign up after the governor's announcement and the marn i.j. reports they got accidental invitations though they weren't eligible. the county echos a complaint, the send large health care providers their california law signed a letter to the governor demanding transparency from the providers and asking for a reliable dose forecast for what's coming their way. in an nns exclusive, governor newsom says logistics are a

challenge. >> sent directly to providers throughout the states and in each and every instance there's protocols, procedures, processes, local health officers, counties, direct providers themselves, clinics, hospitals, so it's all of those nuances that make this more complex. >> reporter: in southern california the rollout is going more smoothly. in orange county disneyland is open to vaccinate up to 3 hun,000 people a day. when the county's app crashed. mass vaccination sites are already working in l.a. at dodger stadium and at the padres stadium in san diego and they're doing thousands of vaccinations a day. laura and scott? >> you know, cyst, i'm curious how california is comparing with other states? >> you know, we're such a massive state, we got 2.5

million doses of the vaccine so far, california, has administered 900,000. not even half of the vaccines that we have at this point. we are still working through our health care workers. >> yeah. long way to go. thanks a lot, kris. california continues to record more than 30,000 cases daily with infections topping more than 2.7 million. the bay area now has more than 320,000 cases with nearly 3200 lives lost. san quentin prison is reporting 2200 cases so far and 28 deaths. the records are separate from the overall bay area totals. there's a new covid outbreak at the jail system. 109 cases now a majority of them are not at the main jail, they're at elmwood in mill pe tis. those are the highest inmate infection numbers since the start of the pandemic. also reports of a covid outbreak at a north bay care

center. according to the press democrat, the outbreak infected five patients, five staff members at sonoma specialty hospital in sebpoll. the patients became infected at another location though the patient quotes one worker disputing that claim. for updates on the pandemic including cases and the vaccine rollout head to nbcbayarea.com. new overnight, police are calling a shooting that happened yesterday near downtown a homicide. it happened a little after 5:00 p.m. near east virginia and south third near interstate 280. overnight, police indicated the victim died. so far they have not provided any more details including who was killed or what may have led up to it or if an arrest has been made. some legal closure this morning maybe in the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. master tenant derrick el mina

struck a plea deal. the fire killed 36 when it raced through the oakland warehouse in 2016. jurors could not reach a verdict in the first manslaughter trial. the district attorney's office notified the families he has been offered and accepted a plea deal. it's not clear what his sentence will be but a court hearing will take place next friday with sentencing scheduled four weeks later. poor planning and searing heat are being cited for grid related outages that blanketed parts california last summer. the rolling blackouts affecting mostly the sierra foothills and southern california. it served as a lesson they believe they can avoid repeating this year. this was the state's first rolling blackout in 20 years. we'll keep tabs on that. let's talk weather for today.
