san andreas? >> you look at the reports when i see them on my map, you kind of see the pattern of the stronger shaking in santa cruz and salinas and as it goes out to san francisco, the shaking decreases in intensity, so it kind of follows what we would expect for this size of a earthquake. >> area down there southwest at gilroy, it's sparsely populated. i guess that's a positive thing. >> right. >> we have not heard of any reports of any damage yet. would we expect any? >> of this size, i would expect that objects might be falling all shelves or loose objects might be shaken up a little bit. but i do not expect any widespread damage. >> ok. janay, thank you very much for taking time out and letting us know about this earthquake. it was downgraded to a 4.2 after being a 4.5.

want to recoop our top story. an earthquake down near gilroy, epicenter, felt all the way through san jose, san mateo all the way up into west marin, over to the east bay as well. in oakland. you see the magnitude 4.2 struck just after 8:00, a depth of five miles and it's not -- it was not that far from the san andreas fault. you see where it was, it's south of gilroy and it is east of watsonville, between watsonville

million americans become eligible for the shot as 18 states offer vaccinations to seniors 65 and older. the move is putting pressure on a system already pushed to the brink. perhaps the biggest problem, news yesterday that the federal government nevada had the stockpile of vaccines states were counting on. we spoke to dr. monica gandhi about all the ups and downs of the vaccination distribution efforts. join us is dr. gandhi, infectious disease expert. thanks for joining us on this saturday. i want to get right to it and ask you, how do you think vaccine distribution is going so far? >> i think it's pretty obvious it's not going that well. every state is different, and california's quite near the bottom, i think sometimes second, sometimes third, sometimes fourth, so it's not going that well in our state. other maces, it's going better. we're hoping for more up formity
8:49 pm
and doing better all in all. >> what do you think need to happen? name two of the biggest things that need to happen to get faster and be more efficient? >> i think from what i've understood is that each county and state is pretty much deciding for themselves how they're going to distribute it, for better or for worse. you could say i wish we had a national system, but that ship sailed a hopping time ago. already. so if every coup is deciding for themselves, they actually need to know their supply chain. they need to know which day they're going to get this many vaccines, this many vaccines, this many vaccines, so when they map like he planned and gave his plans yesterday for san francisco, they know their supply chain. who's responsible for telling them about the supply chain? the state, but the state is also somewhat hindered by the federal government not saying, ok, i'm going to be giving you this
8:50 pm
amount on this day and this amount on this day, so it's starting from the federal government we're having a problem. then to the state. then the counties need to man an they can't. >> dr. gandhi, you did just mention, the next question about mayor london breed and the announcement she made about the mass distribution sites. what are your thoughts about that announcement? >> i really liked the announcement. i think there were three things that made enormous sense. one was no matter what elliott care system you have in this city that you call a centralized number, you get on a centralized link. and if you're kaiser or usf or in the san francisco health plan, you go to one of these three mass vaccination sites and maybe all the kaiser people will be here and maybe all the mosconi people will be somewhere else. that was so organized to say
8:51 pm
everyone needs to be prioritized in the same way across the county and not have different ways depending on which health care system you are. second part i liked. there's three mass vaccination sites she announced. then all the testing sites are going to turn into vaccination sites, too. that so makes semgs. you'll get the 65-year-olds who are the high risk. there are essential workers, they're out in society, they may be more likely to be spreading it so you want to get them vaccinated to interrupt the chain of transmission. third reason i liked it is that was responsive to what a number of people are saying that we have to get it out as fast as possible. so any mask means fast. >> what do you say to people who are desperate to get the vaccine and get back to normal life and they're dealing with waiting for a long time either on the phone or what do you say to those
8:52 pm
people? >> i say i am so sorry to you, i am so sorry, because it should have been better than this. we should have been a massively industrialized nation who should have done better and i'm really sorry. each county is different. but i totally think we're getting our act together here and you will go back to normal life, absolutely. >> thank you for your insight. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> if you need more information on how to get vaccinated, you can take out your phone, use its camera to scan that qr code on the left-hand side of your screen. it will take you to our vaccination guide. then scroll to your coup on how to sign up and where to go once it's your turn to get vaccinated. the other way to find out is go to our website, click on the

9:04 pm
>> talk for people who may not be familiar with the science what happens the closer an earth quake occurs near that fault line. >> so when there's -- there is an example of these plates that move by and there are some sections where we have large faults such as the san andreas fault. that fault stretches up from northern california all the way down to southern california. that's a really large fault. there are many, many, many smaller faults that are all over the place on the west coast, particularly in california what we see is near the san andreas fault there are actually other different lengths. as you might imagine, the larger faults are capable of bigger earthquakes and the smaller ones tend to have smaller earthquakes, so that's kind of how that, wo. >> we often hear folks wondering
9:05 pm
whether or not if you have more and more earthquakes, if that means that the big one is about to hit. we have had a number of earthquakes in the bay area recently. does that mean that the big one could hit soon? >> unfortunately, we never can know when the next big earthquake will occur. it could happen today. it could happen ten years from now. we really have no idea when that next big earthquake will occur. just because there are effort quakes happening doesn't necessarily mean there will be a bigger one. there is a chance there may be a larger earthquake that comes after these earthquakes, but we know that an after shock is an after shock until there is a later earthquake, right. so the best thing we can tell people is just to use it as a reminder to get prepared for that next big earthquake. make sure you have a plan. make sure you have an earthquake preparedness kit and make sure you know what you'll do when
