4:37 am
this was the maximum that we've seen since this all began. even in san francisco we have hey winds gusting up to 51 miles per hour, so that could still cause a lot of damage, but today, it's going to be slightly cooler. the winds will gradually calm down as we head into the afternoon and evening. of course, we'll be watching that and i'm so excited that we do have some rain in the forecast, but we just need things to quiet down in the near term so we're going to talk more about that coming up. mike, what's it looking like driving around the bay area? >> kari, it looks like something's going to push you around that you can't see, that's the wind that you're talking about. you showed them the numbers. we'll show you on the map, we're talking about the light yellow, when it's the most significant impact from the wind, at least reported by our sensors and that's the numbers that are coming down with yours and my traffic information together. we're looking at the north bay wind, peninsula wind along the coast and woodside has been so bad, it's blown down trees. debris across the roadway near alice's ranch, a lot of folks

southern california say they've detected the same kind of covid strain that we're seeing in the bay area. the variant is tied to an outbreak at l.a. cedar sinai hospital and tied to the variant recently linked to the christmas day outbreak at san jose kaiser. the strain was first observed in denmark. it is not the same one that's been identified in the uk, but researchers are calling it a major contributor to the surge in cases over the past two months, across southern california. if you need more information about how to get vaccinated, we can help. if you take out your phone, you can use your camera to scan that qr code on the left-hand side of your screen. it will take you right to our vaccination guide. scroll down to your county, get information on how to sign up, and where to go once it's your turn. you can head to nbcbayarea.com and click on "covid-19 vaccination guide" as well. that will be on the top of your computer screen. it's 4:43. we continue to track the microclimate weather alert, powerful winds causing

way to make drone deliveries a reality. the "wall street journal" reports the company will start sending drone this is june to drop multiple orders at government-approved landing zones in israel such as parking lots. zifrry drivers will collect orders from these spots and take them to customers. the israeli government is only allowing pizza hut to test drones from one restaurant within an air bubble or roughly 50 square miles. the company says in that area it can service 7,000 additional homes that it normally can't. that's the lates cnbc headlines. back to you. 4:48 right now. taking a live look outside, look at that wind whipping this morning. you see the flag there, the thing is, the wind has been howling across the bay area all night creating some wooid spread problems. we're hearing that pg&e reported several power outages. there are up to 600 in oakland so far this morning. we'll take you throughout the bay area and show you some of the damages of the fires
4:49 am
overnight, downed trees as well, but let's talk about the forecast. it was so amazingly warm yesterday. this is so concerning when it comes to fire danger, kari. >> absolutely. especially when you have some high winds and some low humidity. this morning it is still very dry and we are going to see elevated fire danger continue. the wind speeds we've seen are some of the sustained winds still roaring especially across parts of the north bay. you may be wondering what is going on. the high wind gust also continue through the next several hours. here we are stopping right about 12:30 and san jose still looking at wind speeds close to 20 miles per hour but the north bay will have higher wind gusts as well as parts of the tri-valley.
4:50 am
through the evening the high wind warning expires at 10:00 a.m. into 6:00 we'll have high wind gusts continuing through the evening. the threat with the prolonged wind event really dries out vegetation even more and causes more concerns with the fire danger that will continue until the winds calm down early tomorrow morning. so we do still have several more hours of this, and as we take a look at our temperatures for today, even though it was very warm and spring-like yesterday, it won't be as warm today. we're looking at temperatures for the most part reach into the upper 60s. when you compare that to the records though, there still may be some new records set like oakland may tie the record but other areas will be very close to those record high temperatures and we're seeing still this area of low pressure, but it's going to be moving away. it's going to make way for the potential for some rain by the end of the weekend. this is so desperately needed at this point. it's looking a little bit better with how much rain we're going to see, because there won't be only just one system.
4:51 am
there will be two, and especially that second storm system coming in by the end of the weekend, looks to bring us some good amounts of rain along with some cold temperatures, and speaking of cold temperatures, i know we enjoyed the warmth, but take a look at what's ahead. we're going to see those temperatures in the upper 60s for today, and then some mid-50s for highs by friday, and that's the kind of cool and windy weather along with that rain. we'll see continue into early next week. a lot of changes here and mike, you're watching what's changing out there now for the morning commute. >> yes, what's changing is what you're going to be driving over or can't be driving through. let's look the at the roadways. the light yellow highlighting on the map is wind. gusty winds along the coast. highway 9 just off highway 35 the first area of skyline that's closed or at least really affected and with traffic control because of trees.
4:52 am
debris down across this area, into the south bay, and over on the peninsula, woodside and other area around alice's restaurant, you might be familiar with that, a live picture from emeryville, a clear drive but look how much the camera is shaking. gusty areas across the bay area bridges. >> it is amazing. . in the north bay the strong winds putting fire fighters on edge, they reported quickly to a brush fire in geyserville, sparked by downed power lines near geyser's resort road. that fire burned about 10 to 15 acres. crews say luckily the fire started down in a valley as opposed to being on a mountain range so they had a better chance of controlling it there. with that in mind, pg&e is shutting off power in the sierra foothills because of that danger. the shutoffs took effect overnight. there's worry strong winds could bring down and damage power lines, spark the wildfires as they it z in geyserville. counties include mare poe is a,
