>> good afternoon, everyone. thank you so much for joining us for a special edition of nbc bay area news. i'm jenelle wang. >> and i'm darvin thomas. the country has a new president. joe biden is officially the 46th president of the united states. we have a live look at the white house. president biden and vice president kamala harris are both inside arriving just minutes ago. in just a short while biden is expected to sign his first round of executive orders. it comes after he took the oath of office on the capitol steps before 9:00 in the morning pacific time. >> i joseph robinette biden jr. do solemnly swear that i will faithfully execute -- >> that i will faithfully execute. >> the office of the president of the united states. >> the office of president of the united states. >> the new first lady, dr. jill biden, was by his side, as well as his children hunter and ashley. afterwards president biden delivered a speech calling for

unity in this country. he promised to be a president for all americans. >> for all those who did not support us, let me say this, hear me out as we move forward take a measure of me in my hard, if you still disagree, so be it. that's democracy, that's america. the right to dissent peaceably within the guardrails of our republic is perhaps this nation's greatest strength. yet hear me clearly. this agreement must not lead to this union. and i pledge this to you, i will be a president for all americans, all americans. but the day was not just about our new president but our new vice president. kamala harris is the first woman to ever hold the office. she's also the first black woman and woman of south asian descent to be vice president. she's a bay area native, born right here in oakland.

supreme court justice sonia sotomayor, swore harris into her new role. it was a much different scene at the capitol today from inaugurations past. the biden administration limiting the list of guests due to the pandemic. the national mall was filled with flags from all 50 states. still, that didn't stop the pomp and circumstance. lady gaga sang the national anthem. j.lo and garth brooks also gave musical performances. another change this year was a very quiet, slow-moving parade for the inauguration. none of the crowds lining the parade route as in inaugurations' past. kamala harris and president joe biden getting out of the motorcade towards the end, stepping out with their families and taking a short stroll to their new place of work, the white house. >> before the parade, taking a moment to remember the nation's fallen soldiers on inauguration day. right after they were sworn in, the president and vice president

visited arlington national cemetery to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. they were joined by former president barack obama, michelle obama, george bush and his wife and bill and hillary clinton. they paused for a moment of reflection to honor all who have lost their lives in service for our country. in president biden's first 100 days, some of his first acts will be reversing president donald trump's legacy from the past four years. he will have a mask mandate, requiring masks be worn in all federal buildings and lands. and he will require 100 million vaccines, shots the first 100 days. he plans to reenter the world health organization and paris

climate accords. on an emotional day for so many, former president barack obama had special reasons to be celebrating. earlier today he tweeted a warm throwback photo of his and his then vice president, congratulations to my friend president joe biden. this is your time. and among the dazzling firsts we saw today, the first black president celebrating the first black vice president as kamala harris and husband doug emhoff arrived to the inauguration stage, harris and obama shared a fist pump. president obama spoke to harris saying, "so proud of you." >> and live in washington, d.c. witnessing history today, chris is joining us live. we watched it on tv. you saw it firsthand. what was it like? >> i almost missed it, guys. you almost came to me right as kamala harris was walking through pennsylvania avenue to the white house but i got a

picture! i will share it with my girls. what an exciting moment, whatever party you're with, this is progress for women and little girls. people can believe anything is possible. we've been here a couple of days now but this is the moment we've been looking forward to. of course, there was all of the beautiful pomp and circumstance including the "star-spangled banner" sang by lady gaga. but not the public spectacle that we are used to. we were not able to share this moment with members of the public who so would have liked to have been here because of the pandemic and the violence at the capitol two weeks ago. but that is something joe biden addressed in his speech saying this is a time for unity and that history is waiting for us to do the right thing and he's asking people who didn't vote for him to trust him, saying in the end if they trust him and

hear him out but do not agree, that's okay. that's democracy, and we shouldn't be divided, even if we don't see eye to eye. the spectacle will continue here, the bidens and harris and vice president and president's family now inside the house. it's going joe biden has a number of executive orders he plans on signing as soon as he gets inside. he's also going to swear in his day one staff so that he can start to hit the grouchd running. i was wondering how he's going to get smi sleep because over the last couple of days, robbie, who is with me here, the photographer, we haven't gotten much sleep. so certainly there's a lot to be done here in washington, d.c. >> thank you very much, kris. even though this inauguration is not open to the public, people, are they still showing up, kris? how close can they get to the

white house or u.s. capitol to see the inauguration this morning? >> yes, so we talked about this last night about the fact some people did travel here anyway knowing full well they would not be able to get remotely close here. my position here is right in front of the white house, pennsylvania avenue. the folks who are outside the security perimeter, they're about a mile in the other direction and there are three checkpoints between here and there. in order to get to where we are, we had to have secret service credentials from the presidential inaugural committee, we went through security, we it tsa sweeps, secret service checks, bomb-snipping jobs. all of the equipment went through the x-ray machines. super secure here. the bummer thing though is that regular joes didn't get to see the number one joe in the country take that oath of office. >> we all watched it on television. thank you so much, kris sanchez. we'll touch base with you throughout the day. but another look at the parade going on right now the president

at the white house and vice president kamala harris making her way down pennsylvania avenue towards the white house. it was a virtual parade today, not the huge crowds we would normally see but they are taking moments to speak to people who are allowed in on the side. we saw the president kind of going to al roker from the "today" show and take some moments with people he recognizes. but, of course, because of security, concerns and the global pandemic, some changes this year. but there was a virtual parade going on right now, and as we look at this moment, a very historic moment as we see vice president kamala harris walking down the street with her husband. now women all over the country paying close attention to the swearing in of the first woman and first woman of color to hold the office of the vice president. nbc bay area shirl heard

witnessed history with the first woman who is making history but will not be the last woman to hold this position of power. cheryl? >> that's right, watching the inauguration through the eyes of high school seniors here at notre dame high school was quite an experience for me. it was no doubt in my mind that they knew they were witnessing living history, and something they could tell their children one day. >> i kamala harris swear -- >> reporter: on what was thought impossible became reality today in our nation's capitol. >> it is really amazing to see that, especially since sonia sotomayor was the one who inaugurated her. >> reporter: all eyes on kamala harris, the first woman and first woman of color, ever to hold the title of vice president of the united states of america. >> when i was in first grade, i wanted to be president but i

didn't know what a female president looked like. >> reporter: now these notre dame high school seniors havf w vice president looks like. they could barely contain their excitement. >> this moment meant everything to me. like kamala, i'm also half black and half asian and i'm interested in law and interested in pursuing criminal law as i move on to higher education and seeing that a person of color, a woman of color, that looks like me, i have never seen anything like that before >> reporter: but they are seeing it now. >> while i may be the first woman in this office, i will not be the last. >> reporter: a motto for students at this historic 170-year-old high school, the oldest all-girls' school in the west. the students here are socially and economically diverse but all share a key sense of leadership. >> i have been here for over 30 years. very never had a majority

population, so it really does more than represent the diversity of silicon valley >> reporter: these young women know that and aren't taking this moment of historical importance lightly. >> i think it's really inspiring for a lot of little girls like me who grew up not really seeing anyone in the media who looked like me so i think if i could go back and tell like my kindergarten self that there would be no women of color in the presidency, i think that's amazing and i hope she will inspire many. >> reporter: also another amazing fun fact, mena, kamala harris' niece, attended this school back in 1989, a bit of history this cool can lay claim too. >> and mina just wrote a book inspiring a lot of women, her role models, including her aunt kamala harris.

>> beautiful, powerful vocals from lady gaga during the rendition of the national anthem. but her voice wasn't the only thing that caught people's attention. check out her ball gown. and she had this beautiful, big pin. she said the pin is a dove carrying an olive branch, a symbol of peace. just before boarding air force one this morning before the inauguration, former president donald trump delivered a farewell address to the

nation. he and former first lady melania trump got off marine one at joint base andrews waving to family, friends and supporters before heading to palm beach, florida. trump thanks supporters telling them he was honored to be president and he will be back in some form. >> i will always fight wl be wa. i will be listening, and i will tell you that the future of this country has never been better. >> mr. trump didn't mention joe biden by name but he did wish biden's administration great luck and success. some demonstrators took to the state capitol in sacramento this afternoon. about 75 people demonstrated outside. they started gathering just after noon. police officers are also surrounding the capitol and the demonstrators. we will continue to monitor the situation and bring you updates as we learn them. beautiful day outside. let's get a check of our forecast now, switch some gears

to kari hall. what are you standing in front of? that's a lot of sunshine behind you. >> well, if you're like me, jenelle, you're watching the coverage like i wonder what the weather is like in d.c., because they look cold. so i wanted to show you what's going on right now, with those temperatures in the low 40s. the time going into the afternoon is in our time zone so look at how cold it is going to be tonight as we continue to watch that coverage there. it's going to drop down into the low 30s and even upper 20s by later this evening into the overnight hours. one of the things that us in the weather community were watching for some of the executive actions biden said he would accomplish on the first day with climate change and some of the executive order so he said he would rejoin the paris agreement as well as cancel the keystone xl pipeline and also put a priority on climate change with a team of scientists to tackle

that. that's something we will be watching for today. let's get to the weather. it is bright and clear out there and finally these winds have calmed down. we saw the storm system. it was farther to the south that brought all of the rain and these high winds to southern california. that is moving away. right now high pressure is moving in and it's going to quiet our weather down for a little while up until our next weather system comes in, which is expected to happen as we head towards friday. when it gets here, it will bring in much cooler temperatures between friday and saturday, and then there will be another storm system dropping in right behind that. that's when it looks like we could get a pretty significant chance of rain between sunday and monday, especially for the sierra, where we could see more snow moving in. as we go through the forecast, it's nice and mild today, highs in the upper 60s in the inland areas, mid-60s tomorrow and check out how much colder it's going to be on friday. upper 50s. looks like we'll take a break from the rain on saturday and then that next storm system

this. >> reporter: kamala's other journey is more of a different story, born of a mother fro emigrated from india and father from british jamaica, she was bused to elementary school as part of a desegregation plan. later she and her sister moved to quebec, canada, with their mom where they attended high school. their childhood friend deflected on that journey. >> i have a daughter turning 21 next week and seeing kamala be the vp makes her hopeful. >> reporter: her path found its way through the historically black howard university in washington, d.c. >> she saw something she did not like. she did something about it >> reporter: back to california to attend cal and hastings college of law. she started her law career as a prosecutor in alameda county before taking a job as a prosecutor in san francisco. in 2002 she successfully ran for san francisco district attorney, defeating her old boss, terrence hall alain. then campaign manager debbie mez

so today at this time in this place, let's start afresh. unity. unity. >> you've been watching live coverage all day of inauguration day right here on nbc bay area. we want to welcome you again to this special edition of nbc bay area news. good evening, i'm jenelle wang. >> i'm garvin thomas. it is indeed an historic day for the nation. here's a live look at the white house where president biden is now the 46th president of the united states. within the next hour or so, president biden is expected to sign a series of executive orders. earlier today president biden, along with vice president kamala harris and their families and former president of the united states of america visited arlington national cemetery. both president biden and vp harris laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. president biden has now been part of two historic white house administrations.

the first was when president biden was president. now president biden is joined with the first woman and person of color as vice president. during his speech, president biden's message was one of unity. he addressed both people who voted for him and those who did not. >> to all of those who supported our campaign, i'm humbled by the faith you placed in us. to all of those who did not support us, let me say this, hear me out as we move forward. take a measure of me and my heart. if you still disagree, so b it. that's guardrails of our republic is perhaps this nation's greatest strength. >> former president trump was absent at today's inauguration, however, vice president pence was there along with former presidents obama, george w. bush and clinton. jimmy carter was not there.

he called president biden last night telling him he would not be able to attend. nbc bay area's kris sanchez is our eyes and ears on the ground. in fact, kris, i see from your instagram you had a great view of the new president and vice president walking to the white house. but you're one of the few to get that close because of security. just how tight is it? >> absolutely. i may not be coming home. this is the best seat in the house certainly because of the security conditions we're under right now. really difficult to get inside the perimeter. you have to be credentials media only within this part of it and then there's another perimeter beyond that. three fences where we are and where the regular person might be able to get close. so we know people did make their way to washington, d.c. they wanted to be here to show support for the administration, they wanted to show support for a peaceful transfer of power but they did not get anywhere near where they might be able to see president joe biden and kamala

harris, vice president now, make their way here to the white house where we are right now. >> you're obviously there in that position all day. you got to see the new president arrive. you got to see the former president depart as well this morning. describe that scene and how it was different. >> this is -- the security was so tight here that we kind ever got held up at security. they had to find a bomb-sniffing dog to come look at our equipment as marine one was taking off. so it went over our head. but in that moment, i was just a normal human. i just looked up, i forgot to get my camera, forgot to get my phone out. we just experienced it. my cameraman and i looked up and watched marine one depart over the white house with donald trump president for the very last time. >> it's in those moments where you do forget the camera and you just take in the moment, those are the ones you're going to remember and i know you're going to go home and talk to your

girls about. >> and kick myself a little bit too. >> thank you very much, kris. we'll see you in just a bit. president trump broke tradition during his white house term. as he left office, he did fulfill a final custom. he left a letter in the oval office resolute desk for joe biden. the trump white house did not divulge the letter's content. neither as president biden. the tradition started when ronald reagan left a humorous note for his vice president george h.w. bush, when he succeeded him as president. the inauguration parade looks a little different this year because of the global pandemic. less of a public spectacle than in previous years, but president biden still took a moment to leave the motorcade and greet those who were in attendance. >> thank you! >> the president and vice president walked from 15th street to the white house. the in-person festivities featured performances by the university the of delaware and howard university drumlines, the school were the president and

vice president's alma maters. today's parade event featured a virtual performance, representing all 56 u.s. states and territories. the president of santa clara university played an early role on this historic day. president biden and vice president harris and a bipartisan group of lawmakers attended a morning mass at the cathedral of st. matthew of apostle a few blocks from the white house. a jesuit priest led the service. he met the bidens 15 years ago when he was serving at georgetown university in washington, d.c., where the bidens sometimes worshipped several members of the republican party also in attendance at today's inauguration ceremony. former vice president mike pence was there as a member of the trump administration. senator ted cruz, one of 140 republicans who voted against certifying biden's victory also in attendance today.

representative steve scalise seen also at the swearing in, talking to george w. bush and first lady laura bush. he also voted against certifying the election results. just some of the gop lawmakers who attended the inauguration this morning. now while the pandemic canceled the customary congressional lunch with the new president, the presentation of gifts took place at usual in the capitol rotunda. gop senate leader mitch mcconnell gave the president and vice president u.s. flags that flew as they took their oaths of office. >> and today this flag flew over our former colleague's inauguration as the very first female vice president of the united states. so to our very distinguished former colleague, madam vice president, please accept this flag with the highest compliments and congratulations. >> senator mcconnell did take a humorous jab at nancy pelosi

saying not only are joe biden and kamala harris former senators, they skipped the house all together. speaker pelosi remarked if there had been a congressional luncheon, everyone would have been drinking california wine. as he gets mentioned among those participating in the inauguration ceremonies, the president of santa clara university, nbc bay area's scott budman got a chance to speak with father kevin o'brien this morning from our nation's capitol and scott joins us live from santa clara with the story. scott? >> good morning, good afternoon, garvin. as you mentioned, father o'brien has known the biden family about 15 years now and said he led several worship services with the family but admits today in our nation's capitol felt different than anything else. for one thing, he said, faith is extremely important to the bidens, so among all of the security, it felt very natural to worship with the family. he also said it felt good to know both democrats and republicans were coming together to worship.

and that's what he says he was thinking about as he dealt with more security than he's ever seen in his lifetime on his way to the church. >> that's when it struck me that, you know, in a church about 100 people, this was a moment where, okay, we're all coming together for one purpose now, which is to, you know, pray for our nation, pray for the new administration, and give thanks to god and ask for god's protection. >> father o'brien said he spoke this morning from the gospel of st. luke, which he called something similar to jesus' inaugural address. he pointed out 60 years ago president kennedy took the oath of office as the nation's first catholic president. there are a couple local angles here. for one thing, president biden's grandfather attended college here at santa clara church toda

said she really appreciates the bay area representation. live at santa clara, scott budman, nbc bay area news. >> bay area well represented. thank you very much, scott. let's go back to our weather. a beautiful day. a live look at the golden gate bridge. you can see lots of blue skies today. but changes are coming. quite the temperature drop, right, kari? >> absolutely. as we have enjoyed some warm weather and some springlike temperatures, we know it's not supposed to be this warm. and even as we take a live look outside and san jose looks a little hazy and we're going to continue to watch out for the potential of some of the those gusty winds bringing in the fires that are still smoldering in the santa cruz mountains, but as we go into the rest of the afternoon, we're going to see our temperatures mainly in the 60s, where we are now, just hold steady and we will not see many changes here. this is still about 10 degrees above normal and schools down

immediately marsha said her 4-year-old granddaughter ripped up this portrait. the words were stirring and so was that yellow outfit she was wearing as well. here we are. so many people posting videos of their daughters, specifically black or brown daughters watching on tv as kamala harris is taking the oath of office. you see that over and over again. this little girl's name, bella freedom. what a name for today. and here we are with another little girl watching kamala harris there. bryan smith taking a keeper of a photo and sharing it online. she may not know what is going on today but that picture will last the ages for her. then lots of people online showing pearls, pearls very symbolic today. here's shelitta saying her daughter couldn't wait to tell her friends and teachers about the significance of kamala harris' pearls and how important it is for black girls to see her wearing them. cameron is wearing her late mother-in-law's string of pearls for today's inauguration.

jealous what kind of weather we're experiencing here but it will not last. it came with downsides, we all know that. with the high winds that kicked up yesterday. we had a dozen fires sparked across the bay area and a lot of them in the santa cruz mountains. this is a look at a live camera. alert wildfire camera looking west of portola valley and it's still showing you can see the of whos and plumes of smoke. and you can see we just had a tweet from cal fire saying they've gotten containment on all of those fires and evacuations lifted. that's really great news coming out of cal fire for all of the fires that were sparked yesterday. you can see the outline of the fires we had in august. so we are still seeing the hazy sky around the bay area as we take a live look outside in walnut creek. our air quality has come down to moderate. if you're going to be spending a

little more time outside, just a heads up if you are sensitive to the smoke, you may want to limit your time out there. i know it's hard because temperatures are in the upper 60s even right now. at 71 in livermore, we're at 66 in napa and san francisco at 64. as we watch these temperatures rise, we may be setting records once again. several days in a row we've had record-high temperatures. we're going to be very close again today and those records for santa rosa 70 degrees, but we will be very close up to about 68 today and close in san jose as well. we're in this bubble of dry air right now. we know we have a lot of storms off the coast and that will start to move in. as we head towards the end of the week, we have a couple of more days of mild weather and sunshine. and then this low drops in friday into saturday. it doesn't look like it has a lot of moisture in it but a second storm system coming in between sunday and monday may

give us a better chance of more significant rainfall. the fist round of rain moves in, brings us mostly about a .10th to quarter inch of rain. then we see the second round of rain coming in and in all can see about a half to 3/4 of an inch of rain. for the sierra, it also looks pretty good considering it's been so dry there. we've only gotten about half of our normal amount of snow. we can get norm 10 to 16 inches of snow over the next week. so once again, we're dry today and tomorrow, nice weather continues. friday is when the temperatures drop off and look at how cold it's going to be this weekend. we're even talking about some freezing temperatures. so everything that's starting to bud and bloom right now is going to have to deal with the freeze as we go into the next several days. but at least we do get much needed rain. janelle and garvin? >> for sure we need it. thank you very much, kari. coming up, the bible president biden used during his swearing in. we're going to tell you the story behind that. and we're taking the temperature of the country. a look at how america moves forward.

as joe biden became president today, he laid his hand on his family bible with quite a history. it's been handed down for generations, since 1893. he also used it when he took the oath as vice president in 2009 and 2013, and each time he was sworn in as u.s. senator. there was a moment exactly two weeks ago as insurgents stormed the u.s. capitol, we could all be forgiven for wondering if this day would actually go forward. thankfully it did peacefully. but the first day of the administration, it must be the start of something else. >> we've learned again that democracy is precious. >> reporter: as eloquent as the new president's words might have been -- >> this is america's day. >> reporter: -- as lofty as the image he summoned, there was a

speechwriter alive, nor ever was, could fix with a single set of words that ails this country at this time. for on this 20th of january, 2021, joseph r. biden assumed the leadership of a fractured nation, of red and blue, both purple with rage, whether fueled by injustice or stoked by disinformation are political divisions over the past four years have devolved into personal vendettas. the miles of fencing surrounding this inauguration, a fitting metaphor for a country of neighbors having trouble finding common ground. president biden, unlike his predecessor, will likely not be one to incessantly poke at the country's wounds, only making them hurt more. but there's only so much one man, even the president, can do. it will be up to the rest of us to do the real work of healing. so if there is to be hope on

where just a few days ago violence sought to shape the capitol's very foundation. we come together as one nation under god, be indivisible, to carry out the peaceful transfer of power. >> president biden once again reiterated he will be a president for all americans. president trump left office but he might still face legal challenges. where does impeachment stand, and how do the pardons he issued last night affect that? i spoke with bernadette miler, stanford law school expert for her insight. thank you very much for joining us on day one for a new president. do you think anyone will care what's going on with former president trump now and the whole impeachment process? >> it seems inauguration. so the impeachment proceedings may be a sideshow, if anything.

i think probably congress is going to be more focused on biden's plan to deal with covid and all of the other plans that he has in the works. >> if the trial does not go forward, are there other legal avenues congress could take to bar president trump from holding office again? >> yes, so there's a really interesting alternative, which is that section 3 of the 14th amendment bars people who have committed insurrection from holding future office. now, i think there's some worries in congress that if that provision were used, which it hasn't been since reconstruction after the civil war, if that provision were used, it might wind up being used politically and barring more members from holding office for political reasons. so there's some concern about using that provision. >> president trump had a very

busy last day, not a surprise. we expected pardons. anything that surprised you? >> no, i expected some of the pardons that he had issued. he issued pardons of steve bannon and others who were accused of political corruption. that's consistent with some of the pardons he had issued already in the past. one thing he didn't do was pardon himself, which a lot of people had been wondering throughout his presidency whether he would actually do. i think that the likelihood of that became less as impeachment proceedings geared up because if he had pardoned himself, he possibly wouldn't be able to take the fifth amendment in terms of self-incrimination during any impeachment trial. so i think that might be another reason for not having pardoned himself. >> wow, that's so interesting. that was a good tidbit of information. before i let you go, let's just talk about what we just heard now, the lawmakers now dividing

their day to get stuff done. they have to deal with the global pandemic, pass another stimulus package because so many people are out of work and struggling, and also nominating members of biden's cabinet. it's going to be -- what do you see in the near future? this is kind of unprecedented. it's going to be very busy right out of the gate. >> it's going to be extremely busy and i do hope that biden does maximize the impact of the first 100 days because it's possible after two years he won't have the support of the senate anymore. i think he needs to really take advantage of having both houses at this point, especially with respect to say judicial nominees where trump has been so successful at really putting judges on a whole bunch of circuit courts as well as obviously the supreme court and district court. so i think biden needs to really accelerate the pace quickly on that as well. >> okay, thank you so much.

didn't have a photo of it. they used one of the photos last night of the field of flags in washington, d.c. here's 9 news australia, same deal, tweeting with kamala harris saying she's the first female, first black, first asian vice president of the united states. pretty straight pitch also from the times of india. and then other divergence reporting here, deutsche bella. they're focused on donald trump and said, dpla man goes home after four tumultuous years in office. that's in germany. they also did talk, however, about amanda gorman, the poet who basically stole the show. she was all over. here's bbc, ctv in canada and it was "the guardian" that said the hill we climb, the amanda gorman potential that stole the inauguration show. i think "the guardian" has it right there. ctv did take notice of what people were wearing, specifically the purple and significance of it being both red and blue mixed together. but it wasn't just that, there was also talk about bernie sanders and those mittens.

a lot of people responding to that, trying to mimic the photo and asking do i also look warm? there's a story about the mittens, by the way, online if you search for it. and lady gaga and that pin. you guys talked about it earlier on social media, people making connections with it and mock 0ing jay, which comes from "the hunger games" and later shawna prosting, yep, the pin has been put back on its perch. a little more serious, rtv, the russian news information or information organization, they play it pretty straight initially talking about joe biden being sworn in as the 46th president of the united states. shortly there aftercompeting about a grand conspiracy series that sees russian hands between everything that democrats see as a crime. that's probably more of what we're going to see. and with what's happening in china, because as the inauguration in the united states is taking place, nothing about it from cctv, which is state media in china. just a photograph of snow in china from ten days ago.

over to you guys. >> thank you very much, chris. we actually saw some snow flurries this morning at the u.s. capitol. got a little bit chilly for a moment there. we're going to have some of the similar temperatures. we could see snow flurries on our bay area peaks, right, kari hall? >> right, as we head towards the weekend, that's who we're watching for. i added kris sanchez's story to mine because she tagged in me her snowflakes that we're just attaching to our air earlier this morning. as we see here, we have a completely different story for now and enjoying nice and comfortable weather. here's one of the things i'm watching as biden takes his first day in office and a lot of people in the weather community, as he said he's going to have day one actions, also rejoining the paris agreement today. taking on climate change. and also plans to cancel the keystone xl pipe line. of course, that made big headlines when that was also put into effect. and he will make a big priority on climate change, enacting a

lot of scientists, putting them on his team and fighting climate change for the future. we'll see what happens with that. let's get a look at our temperatures right now. as you get ready to step out and enjoy a little bit of sunshine and the mild weather, you may still be smelling a little bit of smoke but our temperatures are in the upper 60s, even low 70s. now we know it's not supposed to be this warm. our normal high temperature in the middle of january is about 58 degrees. so we're way above that. and we can even once again set some record highs. it's been nice these past few days but we know that as we go into the weekend, we have big changes ahead. so we are watching these numbers very closely for the potential of oakland to set a new record today and other spots will be very close but may not reach those record highs that we have for this afternoon. right now it's all clear and sunny but we're in between these two weather systems. you can see the rain that's moving across southern california and that's moving away from us. but we also have some storm

systems off the coast. that will be moving towards us as we go into the weekend. with the first system that drops down, it's going to be what we call an inside slider. it's not going to have a lot of moisture with it but it will bring down some of that cold canadian air as we go towards sunday. and there should be a chance of more significant rainfall as it moves through. the first wave brings us about a .10th to .25th inch of rain and the second inch of rain between sunday and monday will bring in higher rainfall totals. in all about .50 to .75 total. and this is looking great in sierra, a foot of snow in some spots going into early next week. a lot of changes ahead. and we're also watching out for potential for snow on some of our bay area peaks as you mentioned. look at the low temperatures, 31. we're going to be freezing here and we're going to struggle to make it out of the 50s. we're going to stay in the 350s several days so get ready to pull those sweaters back out of

historians will be analyzing and writing about the trump presidency for decades. >> from firing the fbi director to the short-lived ban on muslims, there's a lot to digest. we asked scott mcgrew to identify a few of the highs and lows. >> well, we certainly want to start with the good, the achievements. president trump's first major accomplishment was push through major tax cuts with the help of an all-republican congress. that would give tax relief to corporations and wealthier americans, and then, of course, we have the supreme court.

but three conservative judges appointed to the supreme court. adding to that, criminal justice reform and, of course, one of president trump's big talking points throughout his presidency, the economy. now it's fair to say he inherited a growing economy as presidents do. all presidents inherit an economy. they can help steer it but rarely do they have an effect over its direction. sometimes it's a matter of luck. and the economy was good until the pandemic. the failures, these are moments that will go down in american history. and it started on day one of his presidency. the president lied about his crowd size at the inauguration, insisting it was much bigger. in retrospect, it seems like such a small thing, but it was a sign of things to come. a scene that disturbed all of us, neo-nazis carrying torches, shouting anti-semitic and

anti-black slogans. the president declaring there were good people on both sides. then one of his campaign promises going unfulfilled, the president plom ising to build a wall at the u.s./mexico border and have mexico pay for it. mexico do not. walls were built but almost entirely replacement for existing walls. and then comes impeachment. president trump, only the third u.s. president to be impeached. he's preparing for his second impeachment trial now tied to the capitol attacks. he's the only president to be impeached twice, in fact, of all of the presidential impeachments in all of american history, he accounts for half of them. and then, of course, his handling of the crisis that is still very much a part of our daily lives, coronavirus. from day one he insists it would go away, a miracle he said that would go away with the summer weather he said. at one point president trump wondered out loud about ingesting bleach. but nothing will be bigger than this. this is the thing the history books will focus on. an american president accused of

president biden and his wife dr. jill biden, along with the first-ever female vice president kamala harris on the capitol steps for the military review. they watched as the military band marched by playing "yankee doodle dandy." india's prime minister today acknowledged kamala harris' culture roots on twitter, congratulating her on being sworn in as vice president, adding it's an historic occasion. looking forward to interact with her to make india/u.s. relations more robust. canada's prime minister justin trudeau added his congratulations that our two countries have tackled some of history's greatest challenges together and i'm looking forward to continuing this partnership with you, kamala harris, and your administration. but by far the strangest tweet came from china's xinhua news agency which wrote the words "good riddance, donald trump," over the photo of a white house. the president of iran said the ball is in the court of the u.s. over the future of the

nuclear deal. they will fulfill its commitments under the nuclear deal if the biden administration does too, says the two countries can return to the deal that was signed in the obama administration. the white house once again featuring four-legged friends. the who us has two goerl german shepherds, champ and major. major is the first rags-to-riches story, the first rescue can dog at the white house. the shelter, the main delaware association held a virtual ceremony over the weekend and raised more than $200,000 to help other animals in need. even before she took office, many young girls and boys across the u.s. are already looking up to vice president kamala harris. >> the biden inaugural committee tweeted out a video of harris reading some of the letters sent to her in recent weeks from young people across the country. take a listen. >> i have been waiting for a girl vice president. >> forever.
