airports, increasing vaccination sites by creating federal vaccination centers and increasing production. >> we're still in the dark winter of this pandemic. it's going to get worse before it gets better. >> reporter: but dr. anthony fauci says he's seeing positive signs. >> when you look more recently at the seven-day average of cases, right now it looks like it might actually be plateauing. >> reporter: there are still issues with supply and vaccine distribution biden's vaccine goal, 100 million shots in 100 days. >> is the biden administration starting from scratch with the vaccine distribution effort or are you picking up where the trump administration left off? >> no. we're certainly not starting from scratch because there is activity going on in the distribution we're taking what's gone on and amplifying it in a big way.
4:03 am
>> reporter: and this prediction. >> if we get 75% to 80% of the country vaccinated, i believe by the time we get to the full, we'll be approaching a degree of normality. >> reporter: dr. fauci also taking this swipe at former president trump. >> the idea that you can get up here and talk about what you know, what evidence -- what the science is and know that's it, let the science speak, it is somewhat of a liberating feeling. >> reporter: meanwhile president biden is facing some republican pushback for his executive orders on day one such as rejoining the paris climate agreement and cancel the key stone pipeline program and documenting immigrants. >> unfortunately when he got back to the white house, he implemented a bunch of far left policies. >> reporter: house speaker pelosi was impressed >> the president of the united states committed an act of

4:05 am
some states are having to roll back eligibility requirements. in michigan, 90% need to be vaccinated to fight off the straight nbc's richard engel has the latest on the new variants. >> reporter: in london the coronavirus peaked because of the new strain the cdc estimates could be dominant in the u.s. in march. it's not the only strain a south african variant may have evolved to spread the virus more than once. >> we worry that this variant may be able to escape some of the natural immunity that's out
4:06 am
there. >> could they stop the south african variant? >> we don't know yet that's one of the critical questions we're now addressing. >> reporter: while the data is still coming in, a new study yet to be peer reviewed reports the south africa's ability to evade new antibodies may make new vaccines less effective. >> that's tough to hear. former president trump is mounting his defense for his second impeachment trial he made his first hire yesterday, south carolina attorney butch bowers will defend the president for allegedly inciting insurrection on the u.s. capitol. tracie potts joins us. we've got an idea when the trial will begin. >> reporter: exactly now senate minority leader mitch mcconnell wants to push the trial into february to give president trump a couple of weeks to mount his defense as you heard, he has a defense
4:07 am
attorney pushing a trial date at this point doesn't gibe with the message of unity that we heard from president biden during the inauguration here's house speaker nancy pelosi responding to that. >> the president of the united states committed an act of incitement of insurrection i don't think it's very unifying to say, oh, let's just forget it, and move on. that's not how you unify >> reporter: now, if they push the trial, they may have more time to confirm biden cabinet nominees like retired general lloyd austin nominated to defend the pentagon to be defense secretary. he has cleared one hurdle. since he's been out of the military for seven year, he had to get a special waiver. that's been done the final vote could happen as early as today
4:08 am
he would be the second person confirmed for the biden cabinet. take a look. here's a long list of nominees who have not yet been confirmed. so they're still in the process of trying to go through and hold those hearings and have votes on each one of his cabinet nominees phillip? >> all right the biden team coming together thank you. a minnesota judge has denied the request to delay the trial for police officer derek chauvin who kneeled on george floyd's desk they reconsidering charging all four together. chauvin's trial is scheduled for march 8th while the others are set to start august 23rd. three michigan residents harmed by the lady contamination during the flint water crisis are one step closer to receiving compensation the judge granted approval to a
