unfolding in alabama also watching atlanta this morning. we're seeing a major squall line we had no potential yesterday for severe weather, so this was just a large tonight that touched down in that area. the squall line will persist for another fe have a major storm system that's dumped a foot of snow in nebraska it will track east that's why we have all these winter weather alerts that expand from california to northern new england 100 million people under some kind of winter weather concern. now, across the country, we'll continue to watch this storm system really start to rev up this afternoon, and that's why you're seeing our icons, new york, boston man, we're talking about potential totals, 1 to 3 inches. the higher elevation could see up to 8 inches guys >> 100 million people being affected today thank you. now to a sobering new warning from president biden this morning the united states could see more than 600,000 covid deaths before

the pandemic subsides. the toll already topping 422,000. the country is grappling with a vaccine shortage, but there could be hope on the horizon here's tom costello. >> reporter: six weeks into the national vaccine holdout, many americans are asking what's the holdout, claiming their vaccination appointments were canceled. >> it's a disaster. >> we spent an hour and a half of our time and then another hour in line, waiting for something that never happened. >> reporter: 70-year-old mark smith has tried repeatedly, but no luck. >> i've tried every single day, sometimes on the hour on all of the different sites, and a 65-year-old cannot get an appointment. >> reporter: states report they're not getting doses the federal government promised. new york city postponed a mass vaccination plan at the stadium and citi field where the mets play the government is prepared to

dramatically ramp up vaccinations >> we can get the need. the arm. we just need the supply itself. >> reporter: what's the problem? the cdc reports just over 41 million doses have been distributed to states so far nearly 22 million doses have been administered. as states hold back doses for the required second dose though so far, 3.2 million people have received both doses. president biden reiterated he wants to administer 1 million shot as day, aiming for 150 million shots by may and hopes by spring anyone who wants a vaccination should be able to get one. >> i feel confident that by summer we're going to be well on our way to heading toward herd immunity. >> reporter: one hang-up, arranging external family approval before vaccinated residents in long-term care facilities scott gottlieb says that's poor

the worst unrest in the country in 40 years. the dutch prime minister saying it's criminal violence, and that's how it will be treated. all of this began after this curfew was imposed, saying people need to stay indoors from 9:00 p.m. until 4:30 in the morning to control the uk variant of the coronavirus being found in the country they've also now banned flights from south africa and south america as well as the uk, trying to bring these new variants under control and stop the spread in the country. and although the country has seen cases lowering in the country, there's still unrest there because of these new measures being put into place. the country has had bars and restaurants closed since october. schools and shops that are non-essential closed since last month. they're bracing themselves for more unrest as the harsh restrictions develop in the
