right now at 4:30, another soggy start. a live look at our radar and the rain far from over that includes threat conditions for early morning commuters. >> the rain is causing a crews from the bay area still on scene helping afterd homes and people in monterey county. it's going to be a wait and see what the weather is like. >> proceeding with caution, more local restaurants get the green light to reopen today, but will all this wet weather get in their way? now. good thursday morning to you. thank you so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez here for marcus washington today. we want to start with meteorologist kari hall timing that off and on again rain. i made it from the car to the door, i was so happy, kari. >> yeah. and we're going to have some of those times where it's raining hard and then stops and not all of us in the bay area are hearing that rain hitting the roof right now. it's mainly south of san francisco over towards the east bay and really hitting the south bay at this point. this is a typical atmospheric storm setup where there's a huge case of the haves and have nots as the south bay has it and we will see the heavy rain continuing to move through and stalled out over some of the same areas. you can see the bright reds from freemont towards sunnyvale and lighter towards east palo alto. as we move towards the east bay it's lighter in antioch and

discovery bay. a look at our microclimates and talk about more rain in the forecast. mike, a lot of wet roads for this morning commute. >> that's right, kari. i borrowed the data that we share interest your commute and put it on my maps and showing folks to get an idea of how the rain really hammering the south bay with those brighter colors. the warmer colors is where there's more rain leaving this the cooler color blue. puddling and ponding south throughout the dumbarton bridge and in the tri-valley, 237 off 808 in milpitas where we get a lot of flooding, milpitas, san jose your usual suspects and flooding reported earlier which had 101 at moffit. kris, back to you. >> thanks. new this morning, major flooding in monterey county stalled carsalinas

and gonzalez. the cars stalling in the high d because of the flooding chp tells us southbound 101 is reopened. people south of salinas where a mudslide damaged homes and other buildings. as "today in the bay" reports, they worked to protect homes still in the path of the debris flow. >> reporter: teams of first responders are deployed throughout monterey county. open in alameda firefighters prepositioned here responding to damage caused by mudslides placing sandbags to divert water from a home in south salinas. more than 25 structures were damaged and tons of mud slamming into homes and barns in the overnight hours. >> on river road the mud itself is pretty thick and deep here. this all came from the fire zone

up on the mountains, down to the base of it right here now a muddy and watery mess. >> reporter: a behind it. two people were hurt trying to escape. 50 horses had to be rescued. this charred tree sliding all the way down from the river fire burn scar. a nearby rancher heard the thunderous mudslide around 2:00 a.m. he says, i heard a loud boom. i was really scared and the power went out and when i came out, everything was flooded. >> this is the most water i've seen come at once. >> reporter: across the road lorne dug a trench in anticipation. there's a river of water and debris running through it but not into his century old home. >> i don't know if it saved the house but saved a lot of damage. it would have overflowed no question about it. >> reporter: those firefighters working to save his moment again

hoping rain overnight won't do more damage. ian cole, "today in the bay." happening today the flash flood watch in effect in the santa cruz mountains as well. thousands of people in the burn zone area have either been warned or ordered to leave their homes. san lorenzo valley high school the evacuation site. evacueys slept in their cars or motor homes. >> we were evacuated for almost three weeks in september for the czu fire, that's the cause of this whole thing. so, you know, for a few nights living in a hotel, it's okay. >> utility crews are scouring the burn zone in the area where the czu fire ripped through leaving areas prone to mudslide. pg&e crews are working to restore power.

we have a live look at the outage map and at this point only about 3,000 customers are left in the dark. about half in san francisco. we say only because pg&e says more than 500,000 customers across its service area lost power at some point during the storm. let's take a live look over san francisco early this morning where many restaurants planned to resume outdoor dining today. boy, the rain is proving to be a challenge ahead of this reopening. some restaurants have spent thousands of dollars trying to shield customers from the weather. chinatown is planning a soft opening and the owner is excited to get back to business. >> we have people on standby and want to get back to work. we're going to call and bring them in. >> let's hope the people come out. with no shelter from the storm tonight's forecast may prove to be another delay in any chance of getting back to business.

the blue light along union street. the owner tells us they'll likely have to wait until tomorrow. the company that owns san jose's good samaritan hospital is denying reports anyone was disciplined in the wake of the recent covid vaccine controversy. that facility is no longer getting vaccines because it broke protocol when it vaccinated loss gats toes school district teacherses and staff. there are policy changes under way and a company statement contradicts the hospital which said an executive was punished in some way the hospital spokeswoman who made that statement tells "the mercury news" it was a miscommunication. all this week storm ranger is getting put to the test tracking a lot of rain. it's on the top of the san bruno mountain getting a car wash of its own. live look at the radar lining up again this morning. meteorologist kari hall timing out our forecast. let's head back over to her for another check.

i can hear it coming down on my house right now, kari. >> in the south bay we can hear the rain. it is pour right now. in san francisco in the north bay you're like what rain. it's farther to the south right now that's where we are seeing storm ranger picking on some of the heavy downpours. we can see the surge of the spheric river and we always see this setup with an atmospheric river. it's a narrow band. where it does move in we are getting it really heavy at spots where ian cole was reporting. they've had over 12 inches of rain along the central coast. hopefully we don't see anything like that. it hasn't moved much. as we head over to you, mike, there are commuters that will have to deal with this the rain came in and sort of

sitting here. as we look at 101 our camera in san jose, north 101 mostly we sees the water kicking up in the headlights, folks traveling past the 280, 680 interchange. the traffic volume is manageable. the map normally i'm talking about the highlighted green meaning there will be damp roadways and blue and puddling and ponding reported. the outer lanes likely to get tloogds as we've had a lot of debris that flowed towards the drains so that may be a factor toward the tri-valley. still wet roadways through contra costa county. no delays for the bridges. back to you. >> thanks so much. 4:39. vaccine chasers still ahead on "today in the bay," the lengths shots. sales are soaring.

hitting the south bay right now. it's going to be a soggy commute and the rain is not going anywhere for quite a while. we'll talk about when the rest of the bay area will get some rain. that's coming up in a few minutes. that's why a concern for drivers if you are leaving in the short term, freemont our camera, the traffic flow is fine but the conditions are not. look at the water kicking up on to the roadways are folks are passing by tesla. no matter what kind of car you drive in that area you will get wet. see how the world is business going with frank. >> good morning. i'm frank holland from cnbc. mike, wall street is set to open up lower extending losses, suffering their worst day since october going negative for the year. that was on mixed earnings reports and after fed chair jay powell underscored that u.s. economy has a long road ahead to recovery. investors continued to be fixed on trading and heavily shorted stocks such as gamestop and amc,

really surged this month thanks to a group of individual investors. they're buying these companies to squeeze hedge funds and others betting on those stocks to fall forcing them to cover their losses. reports on jobless claims, new home sales and the first read on fourth quarter gdp. apple reporting better than expected earnings as revenue topped $100 billion for the first time ever. iphone sales doing really well even as the latest model went on sale later than usual and apple had to close stores again due to the pandemic. sales of macs and i pads rocketing higher. ceo tim cook noting the wearables business which includes the apple watch is the size of a fortune 200e and blue will go up by 5 to 35 per month or $50 when bundled together. existing customers won't be impacted until august and add-on will cost more.

4:49 on your thursday morning as we take a live look reopen, they get the chance to do it today, but oh, what a soggy one. maybe it will be a slow start for them. as this rain continues across the bay area kari has a look at our forecast for us now. >> yeah but the good thing is just in time for our friday night plans we will be able to go out and eat without having to worry about rain. we are still in with it and the north bay getting a cans to let the rain that you had earlier soak into the ground but we're still getting a lot of it and it's going to be running off cause something puddles and some

most likely street flooding in some spots as we continue to see all of this bright red from east palo alto toward freemont and down to san jose extending into the south county right now. this is where the atmospheric river is targeting this point and it's starting to get heavier towards the tri-valley and pleasonton and livermore and riding toward the north towards brighter colors meaning more intense rainfall. the wide view of this storm system, it has been over the same area for the past several hours. seeing the rain it's going to continue. if it's dry right now it most likely will stay dry for a while. let's talk about how much rain we've measured. take a look at some of these numbers. in the santa cruz mountains we've gotten over 7 inches of rain at summit road.

morgan hill, mt. diablo over 3 inches, danville over an inch and a half and seen those rainfall totals anywhere from 1 to 2 inches across many microclimates. it continues to come down and we have more on the way. today it becomes more scattered and there will be the chance that some of these scattered showers could bring in some thunderstorms, especially late this morning into the afternoon and so it's still going to be a very active day. in fact, it maybe a little bit more busy as we start to see some of these storms dropping some small hail, gusty winds and some brief heavy downpours. additional rainfall totals look like. another quarter to half inch of rain which the ground is already soaked so it's going to be still a very soggy day. i will be tracking this and talk more about sierra snow coming up later. mike, you've been tracking the commute. any major issues? >> you know, i've been tracking your maps as well and that's the

major issue as we look with the radar i took a snapshot of it and put it over our maps and we share the data and you see the bright colors kari is talking about coming across the bay hitting the south bay as we zoom in. we're looking te blue that's on my map, the road conditions pongds, puddling roadway flooding reporting on the outer lanes for the freeways and that is the concern as you're traveling through the area. a number of folks went off the road, the small shoulder the ditch, 237, the second traffic break going on as your approaching. the car off the roadway. highway 17 with slowing on the santa cruz side. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 4:52 right now. an investigation is now under way after an orange county health care worker died after receiving his second dose of the covid-19 vaccine. according to the "orange county

register" he experienced an effect to the pfizer vaccine. an investigation into an official cause of death will take months. health officials say a man died several hours after getting injected with the covid-19 vaccine as well. some under the age of 65 with no realistic chance for being vaccinated for months are on a mission to overcome the odds. at most vaccine sites second lines form extra early and remains in place until the end of the day and all of the people waiting in that line are hoping to receive leftover vaccines that would otherwise expire and be thrown away. workers at one location say about 20 people per week receive dose. a lot of people in line, not that many people getting them. the county does not advise showing up without an appointment but people in line argue it's worth it even if they have just a small shot at getting vaccinated. this is hard to believe but happening today, it's been 35 years since the deadly space
