hi, sausage. whoa, mark. jack hired me! i got a contract. you mean like this one? why choose one when you can have two? my 2 for $5 bagel breakfast sandwiches. right now at 4:30 breaking news. mother nature's wrath continues to hold on northern california. landslide overnight in santa cruz county sending a pg&e truck down an embankment. we have new video just into the newsroom. look at the radar which is lighting up right now as more rain still lingers here at home. plus the war of words intensifies between the governor and teachers over the return to the classroom.

>> hopefully this is going to help increase our revenue so we can have more employees and pay all the bills. >> restaurants reopen and starting this weekend as "today in the bay" starts right now. good friday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. >> we'll check in with mike in just a moment but what rough weather for the restaurants to reopen. kari hall. >> it will be clearing out later today but we have lingering showers for the morning commute. as you get ready to head out we are seeing showers over the south bay, east bay, as well as the north bay up around napa. so we're still looking at the possibility of this rain adding up on all of those heavy rainfall totals that we had and seeing a wintry mix as we look at upper elevations.
4:32 am
as we head over toward the south county those rainfall totals have been pretty impressive. we'll take a look back at those in a few minutes but snow on mount hamilton right now as well as some spotty, light rain in parts of the east bay. so i'm watching all of this for you once again later today looking a little bit better. we'll have more on that in the forecast coming up. mike, what is it looking like for the commute this morning? >> well, kari you mentioned snow. that is the sierra topic. right now let's look at oakland where it is soupy and sloppy. over near high street on 880, on 580 actually between fruitvale and high we've had wires down so pg&e workers had to close eastbound 580 and i think just reopened that with caltrans and now westbound 580 closed around high street. pg&e with wires down and quickly trying to repair that. we've had issues like that around the bay, wet roads in the

green. laura, right back to you on a very similar topic. >> speaking of pg&e, breaking news overnight. a pg&e truck caught in a mud slide south of the bay area. this is new video from the scene. you can see the truck where it happened there. the truck went down about 150 feet down a washed out road. the road is believed to be valencia road and valencia school road. it is completely washed out. no word on any injuries thus far. in the meantime in the santa cruz mountains it seems evacuations have been lifted. some homeowners in boulder creek say they have to deal with minor flooding from run-off. many people breathing a sigh of relief as they were concerned the recent fires would lead to destructive mud slides. california reporting the second highest number of covid-19 deaths during the pandemic. the state department of public health reporting total number statewide to nearly

39,000. the total number of cases approaching 3.2 million. another somber milestone in santa clara county. it has surpassed the 100,000 mark for cases of covid-19. that's about 5% of the population. now to a live look over san francisco where the first night of outdoor dining was cold and it was damp. but some diners did make their way out. restaurant owners cranked up the heat lamps and they were in for a cold night in north beach but owners were hoping for busy nights outside as they're trying to make ends meet after nearly a year of covid restrictions. >> hopefully this is going to help increase our revenue so we can have more employees and pay all the bills. >> with rain in the forecast, not everyone reopened last night but that is expected to change tonight with kari's forecast. several businesses now changing their tune after dropping their lawsuit against governor gavin newsom.
4:35 am
it is reported more than 50 businesses of the wine country coalition for safe reopening are not going to take legal action now that outdoor dining can resume. the coalition warned it will sue again if the governor reinstates the ban. >> governor newsom not seeing eye to eye with teachers i plan before classrooms reopen. the letter also calls for higher priorities for educators. politico reports that newsom met online with state school administrators yesterday and told them to be up front with parents if there is no intention to reopen schools this year. he also argued no return is inevitable if a perfect solution is the only answer. the video of the meeting was posted on youtube but quickly pulled down. along the same lines the governor's $2 billion safe schools proposal is apparently on thin ice in sacramento. "the chronicle" reports there is no real timeline on when the

money might become available. that is in part because school district uncertainties over the application process and lawmaker uncertainties over the distribution of the money. to a live look in tahoe, which is buried in snow. a lot of skiers and snowboarders attempted to head up to the sierra to hit the slopes this weekend. right now 80 is closed from colfax to nevada state line due to spin outs and blizzard like conditions. this is a live look at 89 near squaw valley. caltrans is posting this video showing them helping some drivers who lost control in the south lake tahoe area. >> they had a tough go there. and with 80 closed people probably can't head up there. but so far, 5 to 8 feet of snow so far this week and they could get even more, kari? >> yes. it is still snowing as we take a look at this atmospheric river
4:37 am
still over the region. we are getting additional light snowfall but making the roads very treacherous. you may have a window of getting to the sierra later this evening into tomorrow but we're looking at how this is going to affect our sierra snowpack and right now we are seeing a boost up to about 62% of our normal amount of snow at this point. and before this it was at about 40%. so it's made a huge impact on our sierra snowpack and we know there is more snow on the way heading into next week. there is another couple of feet possible so we'll be watching that as another system comes in by late this weekend into early next week. i'll have details in a few minutes. what are road conditions like around the bay area? >> well, kari, laura, i-80, don't consider that area right now, closed because of spinouts. big chance of spinouts on the map. the highlighted green wet

a very good friday morning to you as we take a peek outside. golden gate bridge iconic structure that it is. damp roadways continue out there. a little break in the rain. a little one. we'll take advantage of it. although it's early. 4:46 right now. more storms comingur way, kari? >> yes. you know, we've all been talking about how the snow has been falling in the sierra. it made national headlines. look at this video. if we're having a hard time imagining how deep that snow is, imagine what it's like for your pets trying to just go out for s and something that will help pick you up on this friday morning. let's get a look at the radar right now. as we are still seeing that snow coming down around mammoth lakes, elsewhere across the sierra, and we are going to also have some more of this rain, i guess the rain is not that fun to play in, is it?
4:48 am
that's what we're still seeing right now as we head out the door but take a look at how much rain we've measured since this storm began. i mean, this is pretty unbelievable. over 10 inches. it's approaching 11 inches in parts of the santa cruz mountains. and morgan hill also h totals so it wasn't rain shadowed that san francisco to y over 2 inches of rain ans elmo measuring 3 inches there but mostly 1 to 2, even 3 inches of rain with this storm all across the bay area. so now as we look at our forecast, we're starting out still wet and then we'll see a drying out by later this morning into the afternoon. it is still going to be a cool day. and the north bay is not going to get a break from the rain. it's just going to continue throughout the weekend just off and on. the rest of us are getting a little sunshine and some drier weather moving in before the
4:49 am
next system comes in. when it does arrive, it looks like initially we could see anywhere from 0.75 inch of rain in san jose to another 1.25 inch going into early next week. we take a brief break for some of rain but there is going to be more of it coming in early next week. and then finally sunshine but not until about wednesday. we'll be tracking all of that. mike, the roads are still wet for the morning's commute. hopefully we don't have as many problems as yesterday. >> well, kari, i think folks learned from yesterday's tough drive. you know, spinouts are a really big issue and also watch for debris. right now we have to watch for the wires that are on the roadway as well as we look at the map and the green highlight shows you where it is still possibly slippery, damp, this. we'll zoom over toward oakland one point westbound 580 or eastbound 580 was closed. it reopened i believe but now westbound is where pg&e and
4:50 am
caltrans workers are clearing those wires from around high street, fruitvale, that area. a bigger look shows you the most rain as you showed, kari, just over around the bridge there and a live look at the bay bridge shows you the conditions still wet and drippy. make sure the wipers are working. back to you. >> always. 4:49 right now. city of san jose is putting the brakes temporarily on a search for the new police chief. short list of six candidates this week dropped to five after minneapolis police chief medaria arradondo dropped out. his department is under national scrutiny for the death of george floyd. the city manager yesterday released a statement saying the search will pause for two weeks to bring together a more diverse candidate pool and gather more public feedback. a forum is scheduled for saturday, february 13th, and should include the current five remaining candidates. l.a. mayor eric garcetti is responding to critics some of who accuse him of jumping the line to be vaccinated.
4:51 am
he got his first shot last week during several days assisting vaccine workers at dodger stadium. garcetti's daughter has already had the virusedical experts on strongly recommended he not wait especially because he was interacting with so many people. >> i think it is really important when people do get that medical advice to say yes and be example. not because you're an elected official but when that comes we need to people to know you should say yes and you should feel good about this vaccine being safe and i wanted to make sure we did that as well. >> all right. garcetti is 15 years under the state 65 and older threshold. critics also point out last month he went on record saying he was going to wait his turn. a lot of backlash in the upscale community of los gatos. the school board is backing its superintendent following a move to vaccinate a group of school

kindness last year was not forgotten and how much they appreciated it. he is referring to the district's $60,000 in fundraising to feed hospital staff. johnson apologized for the characterization. >> this was done out of the sincerity of our hearts and not to give in order to get. >> the county continues to investigate and says it is withholding vaccine from the hospital until it submits a new roll out plan. the school board and most of the public comment were in support of the superintendent. >> my actions were both ethical and legal. >> one written comment read aloud by staff questioned the decision. >> please do or say something to ethically justify your actions. legality appear unethical. >> reporter: so the vaccinescot get the second dose. ian cole "today in the bay." next on "today in the bay" a
