"today in the bay" starts right now. our storm ranger is busy scanning the skies as light rain moves across the bay area. we have a look outside in san jose and san francisco as well to start out your tuesday morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington will join us in the next hour. in honor of radar we're wearing rainfall green. >> it's nice to see the rain moving through this morning. we are going to see still some scattered showers moving through, most of it's been pretty light for us. we have storm ranger all over it, while we're starting to see some clearing in parts of the north bay, this is a slow-moving system and over the next several hours, we'll see it moving off towards the south and east, and gradually tapering off as we go into today. there still will be some rain chances in the forecast as we could see some spotty showers in

the forecast through tomorrow, but warming up as we go into the weekend, so we'll talk more about this, take a look at that, how much rain we've measured already coming up in a few minutes. mike, what's going on with this wet morning commute? >> kari, we've got the rain-soaked hillsides and the roadways. a little reports of flooding in oakland where we look at the camera near the coliseum facing north the mist and the low clouds and the sheen on the roadway, lots of water there. as you look at the nimitz on the map, i've circled southbound coming toward the coliseum around oak street, the exit there, there's a crash maybe in the lanes. the yellow highlight something where the fog is in the rain-soaked hill areas. north bay marin county looking at the city also in the east bay and just generally wet roadways with the green highlighting around the best of the bay. back to you, kris. >> thank you, mike. lots of vaccines in our news to report. starting today, seniors 65 and older can get a covid vaccine at the southeast health center in san francisco. supervisor shaman walton tweeted

that news. you don't have to have an appointment but you have to live in the 9414 or 94134 zip codes to get your dose. another site opened up in san francisco as well in the mission district on 24th street near b.a.r.t. plaza and in contra costa county the first mass vaccination site opened in hercules. 500 people vetted with an appointment rolled up in their cars and rolled up their sleeves monday and got a covid jack convenient. more than 31 million people have been vaccinated across the country. 25 million have received one shot, another 5 million people have gotten both of their doses. here in california, nearly 4 million shots have been administered, los angeles county has given more vaccines than any other large county. as of last week, nearly 800,000 shots were given. san jose's good samaritan hospital in limbo for restarting

its covid vaccinations. "the mercury news" reports there's no time line for any change to that situation. the hospital was involved in a controversy last month when los gatos school workers were offered vaccines even though they're not top priority. the county has since withheld all new vaccine there. the hospital says steps h workes in some cities across the bay area. the cities, oakland, san jose, and berkeley. the plan works like this. grocery stores that employ 500 or more people like safeway, whole foods, costco have to pay their workers extra $5 an hour in hazard or heroes pay. oakland will vote on the plan today. san jose, and san francisco are still in talks. grocery stores say -- >> this would go along in giving

them the security and the safety they need in the event they might become sick or a loved one might get second. >> one will be to pass the costs along to our consumers and cg has done an economic study amount to somewhere near $400 per family annually. >> the heroes pay wouldn't be permanent. under that plan it would eventually phase out. palo alto schools will hold a virtual study session today focused on getting more children back to in-class, in-person learning. many cases, younger grades there are already doing some sort of hybrid learning. meanwhile sonoma county's plan to vaccinate teachers and school workers starting with those over 65 is reportedly on hold. "the press democrat" reports health leader, prioritizing seniors over the age of 75 who have not gotten a vaccine. it's likely vaccines for educators could get going by the end of the month. san francisco supervisors are urging muni to bring back

transit lines cut during the pandemic. sfmta will vote on that resolution today. there's been reduced service on many transit lines and service stopped to several others since the pandemic started. city supervisors argue many people rely on the transportation system, including essential workers, seniors, parents and others. i hear the trickle of rain out on the gutters. that's about how meteorologically advanced i am this morning. we're going to send it over to kari. >> i think that's pretty accurate, don't you think, kari? >> yeah, i think so, absolutely. i mean, that's all we need to know. it's raining out there, at least for some of us. and storm ranger is tracking it, showing the rain that was earlier in the north bay has now made it south of the golden gate bridge, and is slowly making it into the south bay over the past couple of hours. and so we're seeing some pockets of some light to moderate rain out there, and then for the south county, it's just now starting to creep into morgan

hill from the santa cruz mountains, so we'll be watching that as we go into today. taking a look at walnut creek, we are going to see still those rainr later today. we'll talk more about more rain chances in the forecast but mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? >> wet roads, kari. obviously that's the story as you talked about the slow moving rain. we are looking over toward the map, green highlighting, the arrow shows you southbound 680 approaching calaveras, basically 237 a crash there. maybe some little bit of flooding on the off-ramp but not involved in this crash. it may be involved in some of the flooding reports through oakland so do watch that. still tracking 880 at oak street as well through downtown. back to you. >> thank you, mike. this morning, we are getting a look at the highway washout in big sur, drone video from the monterey county sheriff's office shows a huge gap collapsed off highway 1 into the pacific ocean last werea as

well. that is shocking. the road collapse happened after heavy rain, of course and mudslides where the dolan fire wiped out vegetation last summer but officials say the damage isn't as bad as it was in 2017 when that landslide cut off the tourist destination for more than a year. >> it is astounding to look at. now hiring, next on "today in the bay," the extra security needed at vaccine sites across the states and the jobs many are looking to fill. plus bracing for turbulence. the cuts american airlines says it could be making soon because of the pandemic. but first, today in our special black history month series we're recognizing one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. etta james moved to san francisco's phil more doctorate the age of 12. she won six grammys over the span of her career and listed "rolling stone" magazine as one of the top 100 best singers of

heavily shorted stocks which added to worries that maybe markets have become so to stretched in certain areas. gamestop by the way soared 400% last week but fell 30% just in one day yesterday. in focus earnings for exxonmobil, pfizer, u.p.s. and google parent company alphabet and amazon. american airlines says employees should brace for furloughs as it expects to be overstaffed when government aid for the industry expires april 1st. you may recall that $15 billion aid package was aimed at protecting jobs and salaries through march when airlines had hoped that travel demand would recover with the rollout of vaccines, but distribution as we know has been slow and new covid variants are now triggering more travel restrictions by some countries out there. and spacex plans to send four space tourists into orbit

drizzly out there this morning. we know that most of us will get a little taste of that rain throughout today, as that atmospheric river continues to flow our way. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that, and laura and i are helping you out with a little radar green. >> thank you. yes, we needed that but this is not an atmospheric river. this is a run-of-the-mill cold front coming through. we'll feel cooler temperatures later today. it was so nice yesterday out ahead of this rain, but we're looking at highs only in the 50s and we're seeing those temperatures that will be cooler for us today, but then taking a look at storm ranger, you can see where that rain is right now. let's get a closer look. there have been some pockets of some heavier rain but most of us are seeing a light, steady rain moving through with this slow-moving cold front. it's also bringing more snow to the sierra, and it will make its way across the bay area for today. i wanted to show you how much rain we've in, mt. tam had

the most, over 2 inches of tildr an inch of rain and ukiah farther to the north approaching an inch of rain. san francisco we're getting close to a half inch of rain here in redwood city, about a quarter inch of rain. elsewhere it's much lower because the rain is just now getting started, so as we go into today looks like san jose will see that for a longer, until late morning possibly off and on into the afternoon, showing still at 3:00 there will still be a chance of rain and then temperatures only in the upper 50s. now as we go through the time line, models are showing this moving out a lot faster, even though this has been moving very slowly across the region and then going into tomorrow, there still will be a chance of some spotty rain and not all of us will see it but we have to make sure we keep those umbrellas close by as we could see a chance of some of the showers moving through at least until early tomorrow afternoon and as we get a look at the outlook for

the next couple of weeks, we want to see what's going on, the climate prediction center puts this out saying temperature wise for the next two weeks we're going to be below average and below average rainfall so cool and dry is the forecast from the climate prediction center but we are seeing at least the near term warmup here as we go toward the end of the week into the weekend. sunday is looking really nice, making plans to get outside. let's head over to you, mike, what's going on right now, getting outside for i'm watchin for everybody. the reason whyellow mist and ma even registering in oakland hills and perhaps the hills around san francisco. the bay bridge toll plaza shows you how slick the conditions are when the water kicks up here. the map area shows flooding reported in some of the on and off-ramps near off of the nimitz, broadway and oak street there's a crash.

just a slow moving cold front h. we can see it on storm ranger, and as we take a closer look at the south bay, this is where we are seeing some pockets of some heavier rain. it's just now starting to make its way into parts of the south county and we'll continue to keep an eye on it as it makes its way on through, but then as we look at the billinger picture, as after that clears, we are going to see some cooler air coming in, but still the rain chances with us for a little while longer. so i'll have more on this and we'll talk more about how much rain we've measured and how much more we could see, coming up in a few minutes but mike, the morning commute is looking pretty soggy. >> that's right, and so i focus on what we saw because it's left on the roadway, as we look at the map, the green highlighting here in oakland and the little reports of flooding on and offramps, broadway, telegraph, watch the transitions over the course of the last few hours. a crash south past the on-ramp reported still
