with increased genomic testing, virologists expect to discover even more variants, but they say there's no need to worry about every one, and current vaccines should help. >> while some vaccines have been shown to be less efficacious, for example, against the south african variant, the severity of illness of those individuals that were infected was very low. they had very mild disease >> reporter: meanwhile, a new study from oxford university has found astrazeneca's vaccine not only protects people from getting sick 76% effective after one dose, but may also prevent them from spreading the virus. it could soon be approved in the u.s. becoming the third vaccine in the arsenal against covid >> in addition to all of that, there's news on the debate over reopening schools. what can you tell us >> reporter: well, the cdc director weighed in and said she does not believe that schools need to wait until teachers are vaccinated to reopen as you know, the cdc is advocating the schools reopen. by the way, they're also suggesting the science says that

if you do rapid testing of high schoolers and also middle schoolers and elementary school kids, you can cut the infection rate assuming someone is positive, you can cut that rat by 50% in high schools and a third in lower schools once somebody tests positive, you keep them home they're suggesting there's more evidence out there to reopen schools. >> yeah. that may be a path forward all right, tom thank you. by the way, just ahead we'll have a live report from yankee stadium set to be a mass vaccination site, and we'll investigate the problems people are running into with their second vaccine dose. new video to show you that's sparking outrage as the country tries to fight the coronavirus take a look. shoppers and employees of all ages inside a busy supermarket in florida openly rejecting th rules for mask wearing nbc's sam brock witnessed it firsthand and joins us with the details. good morning, sam.
