weekend forecast. some of that is heading this way. >> we'll get to that in a moment. our top story is this hopeful news on the vaccine front. johnson & johnson has requested approval for its one-dose shot. this is a promising announcement that punctuates a week of declining covid numbers. nbc's sam brock is on the story for us. hi, sam. good morning. >> savannah, good morning. we are now two days away from kick-off here in tampa, and while new covid cases, deaths, and hospitalizations are trending down, there is concern among public health officials that parties, big and small, could be jump starting another spike. this as you mentioned a third company, johnson & johnson, applying for emergency use authorization. >> reporter: this morning, the race to vaccinate is taking asking the fda to authorize its one-dose shot for emergency use. j&j says their covid vaccine is 72% effective in preventing moderate to severe disease in the u.s., and it is among the first to show efficacy against

the south african strain. they could supply 100 million doses to the country by june. it comes as the biden administration is ramping up its effort to mask all americans. >> we're going to do whatever we can to make masks more available to people, to increase the supply of masks and, of course, to get people to wear those masks. >> reporter: meanwhile, as covid numbers decline, officials are looking to get ahead of a potential super bowl setback. >> let's beat the coronavirus once and for all. let's not let super bowl parties be the reason it keeps spreading. >> reporter: the mayors of duelling cities teaming up in a new psa. >> we celebrate the big game. let's take precautions to limit the spread of covid-19. >> i encourage everyone to celebrate in small groups instead of squeezing into a crowded bar. >> reporter: but across the sunday's showdown. in new jersey, the 10:00 p.m. curfew in bars and restaurants is lifted tonight, just in time

for the big game. in los angeles, where outdoor dining was given the green light last week, big screen tvs are not allowed to be turned on to curb big crowds. >> i don't think there is a point to have a sports bar with no tvs on. i find it very strange. >> reporter: come sunday, health experts are hoping to avoid a replay of scenes like these from last week. fans celebrating with few masks and little distance. but even small gatherings may not be the safest play, as those covid variants, believed to be more infectious, threaten to encroach on celebrations everywhere. >> it is a perfect storm, to have cases spread. we've gotten lucky, having a party like this in the fall. they're going to find their luck is running out. >> reporter: in a sign of the times, raymond james stadium here in tampa set to open its gates to 25,000 people on sunday, a limited number, for sure. compare that, guys, to the fact that across the country, other football stadiums, like in arizona, are distributing covid vaccines. savannah?

>> sam, the fda also weighing in on the variants, the different mutating strains of coronavirus that are turning up. what do you know? >> exactly right. the variants are evolving by the day. certainly, they pose a different kind of threat. what the fda has said, they need to be able to rapidly change. whether that means shorter vaccine trials, a quicker approval process, it is unclear. pfizer and moderna said they are willing to tweak their vaccines accordingly. >> thank you very much. now to big developments from washington overnight. the democrat-led house taking unprecedented action against controversial congresswoman marjorie taylor greene, stripping the freshman republican of her committee assignments for a series of incendiary comments and social media posts. a move that received support from 11 republicans. we have two reports from our chief white house correspondents. we'll start off with kristen welker. hey, kristen. good morning. >> hoda, good morning. with just days until the impeachment trial of former president trump, the republican party is again grappling with sharp divides within its own

ranks. the discord on display with that fight over the future of congresswoman marjorie taylor greene. >> reporter: overnight, an unprecedented rebuke. the democratic-led house stripping the committee assignments of freshman congresswoman marjorie taylor greene of the opposing party, after she sparked a backlash for endorsing qanon conspiracy theories and amid accusations she called for violence against democrats. >> the yays are 230. the nays are 199. >> reporter: the vote largely falling along party lines, with only 11 republicans joining democrats to remove her from her seats on the budget and education committees. house speaker nancy pelosi with a scathing message for republicans after they failed to take action themselves. >> it's just so unfortunate. you would think that the republican leadership in the congress would have some sense of responsibility to this institution. >> reporter: greene responding

to the crisis early thursday, addressing her past remarks, including supporting false qanon theories. >> q is a patriot. >> reporter: now saying she espoused those views before she was elected and saying it was misinformation she no longer believed. >> i was allowed to believe things that weren't true, and i would ask questions about them and talk about them. and that is absolutely what i regret. >> reporter: and on her implications 9/11 was a hoax -- >> there is never evidence shown for a plane in the pentagon. >> i want to tell you, 9/11 absolutely happened. >> reporter: at one point, greene suggested school shootings were staged and was even on video berating a parkland shooting survivor in 2018. >> you're attacking our second amendment. you have nothing to say? you see, school shootings are absolutely real. >> reporter: congressman mullen, who voted in favor of greene, speaking out overnight. >> no one can defend what she said in the past. >> you did with your vote. >> she asked forgiveness. we're going to move on from

there. >> reporter: but some democrats say her words rang hollow. >> representative greene came to the floor to defend her indefensible conduct. i heard no apology. >> reporter: it all comes as the senate prepares for the second impeachment trial of former president trump, with democrats accusing him of inciting the attack against the capitol. democrats are now asking mr. trump to testify. one of his top attorneys tells nbc news he won't, calling the request a publicity stunt. now, the lead impeachment manager jamie raskin speaking out overnight responding to those developments firing back writing of the president his immediate refusal to testify speaks volumes and establishes an adverse inference supporting his guilt. we are told president biden will week's impeachment proceedings

that blast of winter weather that hit the midwest made its way here to the northeast. it is just adding to the snow piles from this week's massive nor'easter, which dumped nearly 28 inches. >> reporter: this morning, another winter storm barrelling across the country, dumping snow and blasting the midwest with bitter cold. the latest winter weather slamming iowa with whiteout conditions. >> it is a full-on blizzard here in storey county >> reporter: the storm making travel treacherous, slowing traffic, and triggering crashes like this massive 40-car pile-up. closing down a busy interstate thursday state patrol cars nearly totaled in the wreckage, as troopers checked for victims. >> they were out of their vehicles they were trying to assist other motorists to get to safety >> reporter: in parts of chicago, the snow kept piling up, falling up to 2 inches per hour as winds picked up, visibility

second storm is the weekend one we're watching let's deal with this it moves through pretty quickly. rain to the south. some snow through the northeast. icy mix through new england. the heaviest amounts are going to be leeward side of the great lakes. upwards of 12 inches otherwise almost nothing here in the northeast. second storm saturday dives into the rockies, plains. snow for chicago saturday night, it dips down into the gulf, picking up moisture secondary system now forms along the carolina coast on sunday morning. up the coast sunday into the afternoon. snow will develop across the northeast. icy mix through the mid-atlantic the difference between this storm and the one we had earlier this week, it's a quick mover. the snow ends by afternoon down to the south, heavy rain, 1 to 2 inches through sunday as we make our way up the coast, we're looking at the appalachians, 2 to 4 inches of snow generally a quick 2 to 4 inches in the northeast lighter amounts into new england. we'll get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

we have three choices. moderna, pfizer, and j&j what's the difference among those three, and if you are signed up for one, do you actually get to choose >> right, savannah this is great news we have the third shot coming on board. there are a few differences. number one, the main difference that people focus on is the efficacy, the effectiveness. if you look at the numbers, for moderna, pfizer, 95%, 94.1%. johnson & johnson, you hear the 72% here in the united states. you have to realize, this is a bit apples and oranges the 72% was done when these variants were already out there. that's when the studies were done they were done in south africa against the south african variant. they were looking at moderate to severe disease, not overall disease. importantly, with the johnson & johnson shot, it was 100% effective, after four weeks of getting the shot, at preventing hospitalizations and dea all th. that's what we want to prevent the other thing is, for johnson & johnson, it is a one shot regime doesn't need the extra cold

"doonesbury," the first daily comic strip to win a pulitzer prize. it's 50 years old. >> nbc's harry smith got the chance to chat with its creator. harry, good morning. >> yeah, good morning, kids. i'll tell you, if you were a boomer like me, and you were in college, for instance, which was in my case, and one day, all of a sudden, appears in this comic strip the stuff that was actually happening in our lives, talk about a game-changer. >> reporter: 1970. american forces invade cambodia. ronald reagan is elected governor of california chevrolet introduces the vega. a graphic design student brings his comic strip to the yale "daily news. >> managing editor said, well, it's okay. we print pretty much anything, which was true at the time. >> reporter: it had appeared only a half dozen times when its creator, garry trudeau, got the surprise of his life.

cut, but can you use any kind? >> you can use any steak you like but, man, do i love a good ribeye the marbling and the fat, it's just great you have to have a ribeye. you need that. i didn't even have to put any oil in the pan you just go with a nice warm cast iron, throw that ribeye in there, and then all of that natural marbling renders down and creates the nice crust on your steak. >> what about the bread? you what bread do you like >> so i made a bread, but you can use the rolls. some like the buttery hawaiian rolls. i'm not fussy. it's your preference a little arugula on there. we have homemade pickled onions on top of that >> wow. >> like i said, if you're going to put ketchup on the steak, it has to be sexy, right? >> you made it sexy. >> show us the wings before we go. >> yes you have to have that with our cola braised wings here. you can do them in the air fryer. fry them in your oil
