"today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney has the story. >> reporter: the video could not be more clear, a prius slowed down in traffic on brian street at the on-ramp to eastbound 80 friday afternoon. a black honda pulls up, a man jumps out, breaks the back window of the prius, grabs a bag, gets back in the car, where a driver is waiting and the car takes off. inside that prius ben bargadani, in the passenger seat, his wife behind the wheel. >> it was unbelievable. i saw a hand smash my back glass. >> in that bag a cam camera, all kinds of video gear and a drone that they just used for their real estate video company. thousands of dollars worth of equipment gone in a matter of

morning, cali by the supreme court friday night. the highest court labeled it discriminatory, as it was more strict than rules for retail stores and other businesses. covid rules didn't allow any indoor worships for counties in california's most restrictive tier. beginning yesterday, indoor religious services were allowed once again at 25% capacity. san francisco archbishop salvatore cor dleone is happy but asks parishioners not to let down their guard. >> when it's possible, do the mass outside but when the weather conditions are too risky to be outside, go inside under the protocols. >> the archdiocese is asking those with chronic conditions and seniors not to attend indoor decisions.
7:06 am
santa clara county is pushing back on the court's decision. just yesterday the county released a statement reading in part "indoor gatherings of all types remain prohibited in santa clara county. santa clara county's local health orders are structured in a fundamentally different way than the state's rules that were the subject of last night's u.s. supreme court decision." the county went on to encourage the faith community to continue to gather outdoors or virtually and warned all indoor gatherings are still against the rules because of the covid transmission risk. so with very different messages coming from high courter have versus the county it remains to be seen how places can be seen like this cavalry chap until san jose, a live look at the church this morning. you may recall the church defied orders time and again last year, racking up tens of thousands of dollars in fines by holding large indoor services. their attorney released a statement celebrating the supreme court's ruling. it says in part, "this decision

vindicates my clients and other pastors who have been penalized, victimized and criminalized for exercising their first amendment rights. the supreme court is clear, the first amendment applies to california." now to a somber anniversary in the fight against covid. it has now been one year since patricia dowd of san jose became the first american to lose her life to the virus. at the time, it wasn't clear what led to her death. mayor sam liccardo released a statement to mark her passing and the unprecedented year that followed. it reads in part "since patricia's passing, we have lost more than 1,500 friends, neighbors, and loved ones in santa clara county, and 460,000 americans. as we continue to mourn our neighbors, friends, and loved ones taken from us too soon, we come together through our common suffering to summon uncommon strength." as always our coronavirus coverage continues online, including a tool that will show you approximately where you are in the line for the vaccine.

just go to nbcbayarea.com, click on the vaccination line lookup. it's at the very top of the page in our "trending" bar. shifting gears a bit, it is super bowl sunday after all. it's an action-packed day in tampa, florida. the kansas city chiefs arrived yesterday intent on defending their super bowl title against the tampa bay buccaneers. normally the players would arrive at least a week before the big game but of course because of covid-19, the chiefs made the flight last minute after they all got tested for the virus. a lot about this year's super bowl is different. crowds will be much smaller, masks are required around the super bowl city area and there are hundreds of sanitizing stations and reminders to keep socially distanced but the restrictions aren't stopping celebrations against cdc orders. we do have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, we take you live to washington, d.c., for our weekly interview with chuck todd for a preview of this week's "meet the

tendencies. it happened in the 20s and 30s and happened when it in the '50s and '60s. both were impacted essentially in this whole fight of who gets to be an american, whether it was immigration or civil rights. there is a through-line here. i think the most recent trajectory had its roots in ron paul, not rand paul but ron paul. ron paul was sort of a fringe candidate in '08 for president. by '12 he became more main stream and they started to take over the state republican parties. they became the base of the trump -- they also shared suspicion in foreign policy, foreign entanglements and i think that is really fused with the trump wing. you have that ron paul wing, the donald trump wing that he sort of took it all together and that's the tom nant strain in the gop at least among the voters. it's not a recipe for majority
7:14 am
power. it never has been but it is not new for the republican party especially after they go through a series of losses. >> sticking with the republican party and really does seem lick this upcoming second trial, impeachment trial with former president trump is likely to fall short of conviction. do you think it would be better off for democrats to be spending their time and energy sort of enticing republicans on president biden's stimulus package? >> what's interesting with this. it is sort of, when you think about it through the prism of joe biden, that logic makes a lot of sense. when you think about it in terms of the prism of donald trump, then you say to yourself, this is how donald trump has gotten, has slipped the accountability has slipped accountable his whole life. when people basically get oh it's too hard, it's going to be
7:15 am
too much drama to hold him accountable. ignoring trump and hoping he just goes away on his own has never been an effective strategy to deal with donald trump. that would just, that to me is what is staring all of us in the face here. >> so it's sort of holding a president accountable for his actions as opposed to what it was before, holding a reality star accountable. >> yes. >> chuck, as always, we really appreciate your insight. thanks to you for that this morning. join chuck for "meet the press" the interview with the director of allergy and infectious diseases as you know by now dr. anthony fauci and exclusive interview with senator bill cassidy and interview of the house chair of the house intelligence committee. "meet the press" at 8:00 a.m. after this newscast. coming up in 30 minutes from now we'll have our weekly talk with political analyst larry gerston

and look at the second impeachment trial of former president trump and why this trial differs from when he was impeached back in 2019. now to a woman facing challenges during the pandemic like all of us but wrote about her concerns in a letter to president joe biden. she was laid off from a san francisco company months ago but wanted to teach her daughter the power of the pen. as marianne favro reports she never expected the president himself would respond by calling her directly >> hello? >> michelle? >> hi, mr. president. >> this was the beginning of michelle's 20-minute conversation with president joe biden, a conversation that almost didn't happen. >> when the biden team did call me i actually hung up because i thought it was spam. i am glad that they tried me back. >> the 47-year-old mom from roseville says the phone call was a result of a letter she wrote after watching both the recent violence at the capitol
7:17 am
and president biden's inauguration. she says she wanted to set an example for her daughter. >> just in writing the letter was just show an example to my daughter to say hey, you can write a letter, a well-written letler get you farther than storming the capitol and throwing rocks through a window. >> michelle was featured as the first guest in president biden's revamped weekly address, the white house posted part of her conversation on twitter. even michelle's daughter, maddie, got a chance to talk with the president? >> how are you? >> i'm good, how are you? >> michelle was laid off in the summer from her job at stitchfix in san francisco. she says she talked with the president about some of the same things she had put in her letter, how tough it was losing a job for the first time in her life and the challengesnavigati. >> he talked about the american recovery plan, which would certainly extend unemployment
7:18 am
benefits, which would help folks like me, women like me. >> reporter: michelle says she hopes her chat with the president will provide him even more incentive for change. >> now that he knows what a mom from roseville, california, is going through, and shedding light on what other moms are through, i hope that that helps build some momentum to getting some of these policies passed. >> reporter: marianne favro, "nbc bay area news." we're going to shift gears to the weather now. forget snowmen. look at this pair of snow pants. a twitter user in chicago posted these photos of a pair of pants standing upright with no one inside them. if you want to do it, i guess you'd have to go up to tahoe, soak the pants, put them outside, after about 20 minutes you can form the pants and shape them, wait another 20 minutes and your frozen pants are good to go for social media posting. time to check in with vianey

arana for our microclimate forecast. we both lived at cold climates, i remember doing silly things in the snow, throwing hot water into the air in minnesota. i'm sure you did some funny things in boston. >> yes, i was an hour late to my first day of work because i didn't have an ice scraper for the windshield in boston. that's a memory i'll never forget. >> quick lesson learned, yes. >> let's get to the -- exactly. the sunny weather here though, we're california girls, kira, so we appreciate the cold weather in a moderate portion i guess. i'll say moderate. 45 degrees in san francisco. clear skies and right now in san jose, it's a 42 degrees. so let's take a look at some 30s. it's cold up there, novato and napa. we're going to warm up nicely, though. let's take a look at doppler radar and satellite. could you see it's still pretty clear over the bay area. we've got that high pressure, that's what's been keeping us

7:21 am
the rain move in. next seven-day forecast, notice the temperature drops so we'll be in the 60s in san francisco today and then we'll drop back down into the 50s by monday. tuesday and wednesday dry. notice an increase in cloud cover though but by thursday, friday and saturday, the return of the rain to the bay area. inland temperatures notice the decrease in temperatures as well. we go from 60s to 50s so more seasonable for this time of year. any time we see rain, we've been lacking rain and we could see more snow to help our sierra snowpack and the drought conditions. we'll keep a close eye how much we get and the timing once we get closer. for today enjoy the sunshine and continue to send me awesome photos. we have our hey vianey climate hacks. we launched the hey vianey climate in crisis last weekend

case? >> listen, they're going to just go straightforward, when the secretary of state of georgia, the way the president used his language on january 6th to in their words incite the riot, and also the way that the president managed it afterwards, not responding with the help -- and democrats believe they have made a very powerful case, kira. >> and what about the defense? the former president has a new team of attorneys. what will their case be, a sense of their case? >> you know, their first thing is going to be to ignore all the evidence that the house is presenting. they don't want to talk anything at all what the president said. they'll come at it from two different ways. first of all it's unconstitutional in their eyes to try a president after sing l

this was a matter of free speech. the president was just guaranteed in the constitution. why make a big deal out of it. they will not go to the evidence presented by the house because it's pretty indisputable. >> where does the public stand on this issue? >> and this may be one of the reasons why, kira, 90% of the senate already made up its mind even if they're not saying it publicly. the public is split on this. 50% in the latest political poll released the other day, 50% say that he should be convicted. 45% say no. you know what? that's pretty even steven and as far as a lot of these republicans are concerned, why go ahead and dip the toe in the water when you're likely to refuse? they'll stay away from it together. that's defense. don't talk much about it, try to

let it go. >> i touched on this for a cktodd, why go through this exercise? is it about bieve they need to make the case. the democrats believe this was a heinous, terrible event, death and whatnot. they want people to see what they went through and want their point in history. as far as republicans are concerned, this is i don't want to say much adieu about nothing but this is the past. let's move on. at the end of this trial, both of them are going to get something of what they want, put donald trump in his place in history, the republicans will walk away without a conviction and we'll go on to the next part of this endless drama we call american politics. >> larry gerston, always with the crystal ball, we appreciate your insight and your foresight i should say. it is 7:50. vianey will be back with the weather right after this.
