way. a vaccine headache >> extremely frustrated. >> reporter: for people in rhode island trying to get a shot. >> they said we were either all booked or we had no vaccine. >> reporter: cvs saying, we are aware of the scheduling issue and are in the process of resolving it, something they ho tpeavoid when the federal government ships 1 million doses this week to 6,500 pharmacies nationwide including cvs, walgreens, rite aid, walmart, costco, and some grocery stores the program aims to speed up vaccine distribution and eventually expand to 40,000 pharmacies. >> it will look a little bit different than, say, getting a flu shot where you can just walk in and ask for it. we're going to ask patients to book an appointment. >> reporter: here's how you do it first, make sure you're eligible for a shot in your state go online or have a family member help to select your local pharmacy you can also try the mobile app. if that doesn't work, you can call. >> we want people to have the

ability to even call and then schedule their appointment that's new functionality that we're building out >> reporter: while pharmacies are asking americans to be patient with the new process, some are having success. >> showed up at the pharmacy, took 10 minutes. i had to wait, fill out a few forms, and that's it. >> reporter: and more hopeful news about increased distribution pfizer announced they expect to increase vaccine production by some 50% as manufacturing ramps up. >> things are going to get better as we get from february into march, into april because the number of vaccine doses that will be available will increase substantially. >> reporter: millions of americans waiting to get vaccinated are counting on it. cvs will start vaccinations on thursday walgreens says they will start on friday. but this is happening in select states so it's important to check the website. pharmacies say those who are eligible can start making appointments as early as tuesday. frances? >> megan, thank you. the biden administration is

working overtime to sell their covid relief plan to the american people. the president used a super bowl-sized audience last night to underscore the importance of the $1.9 trillion stimulus package during an interview with cbs news he pinned some of the blame on his predecessor. >> one of the disappointments was, when we came into office, the circumstance relating to how the administration was handling covid was even more dire than we'd thought. >> the trump administration? >> the trump administration. we thought -- it indicated there's a lot more vaccine available, and it didn't turn out to be the case >> our tracie potts joins us with more. there's a growing sense of urgency among democrats to get this bill passed >> reporter: right, kendis the house wants this ready for a vote in two weeks, sending it to the senate shortly after that, trying to beat that march 14th deadline when the extra federal unemployment runs out. now the president saying that he

is wide open when it comes to targeting those stimulus checks, even though he does not want to reduce them. he admits that minimum wage likely won't make it in this bill based on senate rules and now democrats today expect to pitch an additional benefit up to $3,600 a year, paid monthly, to parents, to people who have kids 17 and under, and that would start in july we'll get more details on that today. this covid relief bill also includes billions of dollars to help reopen schools. >> i think it's time for schools to reopen safely safely you have to have fewer people in the classroom. >> the one principle we stand by, and president biden has said that, we want to get the schools k-8 open within the next 100 days, all of them. you want to be the first to open, the last to close. what they need is they're going to need some help, and that's why we want the american rescue

plan, the american rescue act, to get through, so that the schools can have the capability with masks, with the ability to get better ventilation >> reporter: on that act, we're also expecting the trump impeachment trial to start tomorrow we don't know if there will be witnesses. senate democrats say they're leaving that up to the house managers kendis, they haven't said if they want to call witnesses. >> all right, they're hoping it will be wrapped up by a week's time, thank you. students in san francisco and chicago may soon be headed back to the classroom after both school districts have reportedly struck tentative deals with the teachers unions. in chicago, the nation's third-largest school district, pre-k and special education programs would return thursday other groups would be staggered but no return date has been set for high schoolers the deal still requires approval by the chicago teachers union. meanwhile, "the san francisco chronicle" is reporting that a tentative agreement would allow reopening depending on the

city's tier position and if covid vaccines are available to teachers and staff no target date for reopening has been picked. former secretary of state george shultz has died best known as ses credited with reer and while awarding him the presidential medal of freedom back in 1989, president reagan said he had helped to make the world a freer and more peaceful place. george shultz was 100 years old. an urgent search and rescue is under way in northern india after a glacier collapsed, triggering a devastating mudslide now there is a desperate search for survivors. nbc's molly hunter joins from us london how many people are feared missing now? >> reporter: frances, good morning. that's right, a desperate search over 150 people are suspected to

still be missing all the rescuers, all the troops are looking for them at least 11 have died. at least 25 people have already been rescued, frances, good news but really dramatic pictures a himalayan glacier fell into a riffer triggering a huge flood in northern india, as water and debris wound through the valley, bursting through a dam there are two villages in that area there are two hydro plants the rescue efforts this morning are focused on workers at those hydro plants 37 people are supposedly trapped in a tunnel this morning, according to the associated press. trapped in with water and debris, so rescuers are really focus okay that specific area. 2,000 troops, military, helicopters are on the scene experts are already pointing to climate change as the cause of this disaster. >> tough to see and hear about hopefully they can get those rescues and have some positive outcome there, molly, thank you.

back in this country, four skiers are dead and four others are recovering this morning after being involved in an avalanche in utah over the weekend. authorities say the avalanche was unintentionally triggered in the millcreek canyon area outside salt lake city it buried all eight skiers in snow the four survivors were able to dig themselves out according to the utah avalanche center, the avalanche was the deadliest on record in u.s. since 1992 as the midwest and northeast was hit with another winter storm over the weekend after last week's powerful nor'easter let's bring in nbc meteorologist janessa webb for the forecast we've had snow in december in january, now february, at least in the northeast >> yeah, frances and kendis. let's talk about my super bowl prediction first i did get this nor'easter right, okay so i'm all about the underdog, but i'll stick to the weather. take a look at what's going on

longer before she does something huge. >> she's gotten a number of different deals, she's huge. another changemaker, nasa engineer victor glover, he's one of 14 black americans to go to space out of 300 and the first black astronaut to stay on the international space station. i had a chance to catch up with him on the iss here's a portion of our conversation what about the history of it all? yes, you are the 14th black astronaut, american astronaut, black american, to make it there in space but that's out of 300. you know, we have mathematicians that were black way back in the days take me through the history of your moment. >> it's bittersweet. i think back to all the folks who could have done this before me, and there are many all of those 14 plus several others and there are folks that will come behind me that will continue this amazing legacy
