a lot of that sunshine. but we'll talk about all of the changes ahead we'll have as we go through the week, coming up in a few minutes. mike, are you seeing any changes right now for the morning commute? >> you w. chp is able to take care of things like this over here on eastbound 580, the macarthur freeway at the macarthur off-ramp, the crash should clear quickly. no injuries reported, right at the off-ramp so they should clear no problem. a clear drive throughout contra costa county and bigger view to the south bay, no problems on either side, the east bay or the peninsula. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. new overnight, some frightening moments for people living in a south bay apartment complex. new video of a fire that started in san jose in a carport that spread to two other units. it happened on colemar drive near story road and east capitol expressway. firefighters evacuated all 16

units while they knocked down the fire which destroyed at least three cars. one resident says he saw the flames and immediately got himself, his disabled wife and another disabled roommate out. >> first was getting people out so i told my roommate hey, let's go. we have to go now because the car is going to explode because the cars are on fire. >> no one was hurt and the cause of that fire is under investigation. 5:02, a big week in washington not only for president biden, but the man he replaced. we've got a live look at capitol hill this morning, former president trump's impeachment trial begins today. democrats will try to lay out the next round of covid relief as well including new payments for struggling parents. >> "today in the bay's" tracie potts is in washington with more. good morning, tracie. >> democrats are preparing to vote on covid relief in two

weeks, including stimulus payments. in an interview with "cbs evening news" president biden said the payments will phase out based on income. >> an individual making up to 75 and phasing out and a couple making up to 150 and it phasing out. but again, i'm wide open on what that is. >> reporter: the president admits this bill will not raise the minimum wage but democrats are planning to add new child payments up to $3,600 paid monthly starting in july. republicans argue the $1.9 trillion plan costs too much. >> sometimes a cure is worse than the disease. >> reporter: stimulus talks continue as the senate prepares for the trump impeachment trial to begin tomorrow. >> i think this is a very bad idea. 45-plus republicans are going to vote early on that it's unconstitutional. >> reporter: a handful of republicans say they'll be impartial jurors. >> i'm going to listen to the arguments on both sides and make the decision that i think is

right. >> reporter: those arguments may or may not include witnesses. >> there will already be over 100 witnesses present and those will be the house and senate members. >> reporter: but getting 17 republicans to convict still seems unlikely. tracie potts, nbc news. switching gears, score one for san mateo and maybe score seven, that's the number of times the san mateo native tom brady has now won the super bowl. in fact, he's now won more trophies on his own than any nfl team. t.b. 12 led the buccaneers to a dominating 31-9 win yesterday over kansas city and super bowl three touchdown passes including two to long-time teammate rob gronkowski. brady also won his fifth super bowl mvp award, further assistancing himself from any other player who has ever played in the nfl. and as you can imagine there were celebrations in tampa bay

area last night as people celebrate the bucs' big win and concerns about the big game triggering a surge in our bay area as well. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in dublin. what are health experts saying about the celebrations? >> reporter: good morning to you, cierra. an infectious disease specialist at ucsf believes yesterday's game in tampa could have been a super spreader event for covid-19. dr. peter chin-hong tells the "business insider" the precautions taken at the game were not enough. yes the 25,000 fans were spread out in the stadium that normally holds 75,000 people. special guests of the game and the stadium is open air which is good, but dr. chin hong points out the fans were yelling, screaming, no surprise there, which causes germs to travel past the six foot social distance guideline. there was a lot of drinking, most likely going on, which means fewer people were

following safety protocols, and nevermind the photos and videos we've seen of people partying outside the stadium in tampa without masks and zero social distance. then there's this nugget, the cdc reports that florida has the highest number of uk variant covid cases among the 50 states, that variant is believed to be more transmissible and potentially for dangerous. locally we've seen a decline in the number of cases and hospitalizations. however, sanranc fco and san mateo counties each reported their respective highest one-day death toll on saturday. 17 in sf, 41 in san mateo, according to data compiled by "the mercury news." those spikes and fatalities are believed to be a lagging indicator of the surge we saw during the holidays. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 5:06 right now. we're expecting to get more

clarification from santa clara county on its stance on indoor religious services following friday's supreme court ruling. justices are allowing limited indoor church services to resume. santa clara county only allows it outdoors. on sunday the county kept its ban in place arguing the supreme court decision falls outside the boundaries of the county's all-encompassing ban. a san francisco father is opening up about the trauma he experienced over the weekend when someone stole his van with his young kids inside. you're familiar with the story, a man who works as a doordash delivery driver came back to his van on saturday night in san francisco to find someone in his the thief took off launching an all-out effort by police to find the children. an amber alert went out and the fare, jeffrey fang, was terrified. >> he saw my desperation. i know because my children were inside, so i know that, and i

was desperate trying to get them out. knowing they were safe, it was like a big weight off of my shoulders and just, god, thank god. >> police located the children in the bay view about four hours later no, where near the pacific heights neighborhood where it all unfolded. the carjackers are still on the loose. new video of one of several side shows authorities say took place yesterday in the east bay. this one that you're seeing right now happened in oakland on high street near interstate 8808 because drivers could not exit, chp says traffic backed up on the freeway, but officer cars involved. some of those aomplex fires may be wondering how they go about rebuilding. santa cruz county is holding two virtual town hall this is week to talk about the permit process. several services can help to streamline things. staff will also stay online

the data shows things are getting better but better than what? this is a chart of hospitalizations in the u.s. and note the big downturn on the far right and note how many more americans are hospitalized now than back in the spring. nonetheless, the stock market continues to roar ahead. i mentioned the s&p 500. the nasdaq also reaching new highs. not a record for the dow but the dow is on its longest winning streak since august. we talked last week about the news of an apple car comes up about every year or so, and gets struck down. hyundai and kia striking down that news this morning, saying in financial reports they are not negotiating with apple about a car. bloomberg reports they did have some talks but they broke down several weeks ago. in alabama today, the folks who work in the amazon warehouses there will vote on whether or not to unionize. that's a first for amazon. the national labor relations board ruled amazon workers can vote by mail today. looking at house price this is morning, they continue to go up nationally because there's

very little inventory. redfin says the median asking price for a house in the u.s. hit $330,000, up 10% from a year ago. new listings of homes for sale down about 12% for the year earlier, with the low mortgage rates a lot more people looking cierra and laura, but they're not finding anything because everyone's looking. there's just not the inventory we need. >> supply and demand. >> and multiple offers and they're snatching them up fast. big money. thanks. 5:16 right now. tiktok is planning an aggressive move into e-commerce in the u.s., going head to head with facebook. there. good morning, marcus. >> good morning to you both. scott was talking about the housing market. well, there's an ad for that. we'll talk about that in a bit. there were so many commercials that a lot of people were talking about and still will be talking about this morning. let's look at some of those. one of the most notable a lot of people were talking about is the robinhood ad, you don't need to become an investor. you were born one, this comes as the company is at the center of the controversy after restricting trading on equities including gamestop. you know what? here is more light-hearted ads. her edward scissorhands role for cadillac, all-electric vehicle company. finally the last commercial had a lot of hearts pounding. >> alexa, dim the lights. ♪♪ >> lights on. >> i heard a lot of my girlfriends talking about this

one. alexa's amazon ad which features michael b. jordan as alexa. forget jake from state farm. they recruited rapper drake for its ad. by the way, one 30-second spot during the super bowl cost $5.5 million. and it wasn't all about the super bowl over the weekend. did you catch that new requests snl" episode? this one was funny and hit close to home. zillow a spoof there, it's really garnering a lot of attention online. look at this one. >> you need something new. >> something exciting. >> i need a new fantasy. >> then you need -- >> zillow. >> zillow. >> zillow. >> i sent that to so many of my friends and i'm telling you, we were like ooh, that hit close to to twitter and they, dan levy who was hosting said to him "see you at home."

that means he'll get home on zillow to look at homes. those commercials, spoofs all weekend made me laugh and i would say during the super bowl one of the commercials that touched me, i don't know if you remember this one, the toyota ad and it was about the woman, the paralympics tied into that and the swimmer, she doesn't have legs but was talking about how her mother found out she was going to get her for adoption. >> the adopted girl. >> it was just so touching. so i loved that ad personally. >> all the feels, i loved it. thanks, marcus. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall and mike in just a moment. kari has a look at our week-long forecast. here we go, monday morning. >> monday morning, and it's a cold one. we're starting out with some temperatures in the upper 30s in the north bay. we're also feeling some low 40s as you get ready to head out the door but after this cool see itn out to be a pretty nice day but we just don't have as much sunshine as we had over the

weekend. if you're going out to the park in walnut creek, expect temperatures to be in the low 50s at 10:00. at noontime we're at 58 degrees and 62 degrees and still cloudy for the middle of the afternoon. then we'll see our temperatures peaking there, which is about normal for this time in february. we should be in the low 60s and we should also be getting some rain but that comes later in the week, once we start to see a stronger storm system coming in, that one once again coming on thursday. we'll see another one right behind that arriving on saturday, may still bring in some spotty, light rain early on sunday morning. so this next round of rain doesn't look too heavy. it's going to be fairly quick moving, too. so it only looks to bring us about 0.1 to 0.25 of an inch of rain, especially in the north bay some slightly higher amounts and for the sierra, the first round a couple of inch up to ab foot, maybe slightly more for some of our resorts. so we are going to be dry today and tomorrow, with the exception

of a couple of spotty, light sprinkles, and then as we head toward wednesday, that's our bright and sunny day before some rain comes in on thursday. friday is also looking dry, but then some more rain coming back in on saturday, and once again both of these storm systems, neither one will be strong so we're looking at getting additional rainfall but not having too many problems to go along with it. that is some great news. mike, do you have any great news now for the morning commute? >> yes -- i mean, well here look at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is great, the traffic flows nicely through the toll plaza. the metering lights are not on but the last five days last weekdays they were turned on so we'll track that. unfortunately as we look at the map this may be a reason why they turned the lights on we have a slow drive mid span reports of a concrete truck that dropped one of the large hoses from the back so it's not concrete but it is a large piece of equipment that has to be removed, maybe a little traffic break there, a little slowing for the tri-valley.

recent american history with deep bay area ties has died. george shultz died in his home on the stanford camp us at the hoover institute. he was 100 years old. shultz was the labor and treasury secretary under president richard nixon before spending more than six years with president ronald reagan. in honor of black history month we're recognizing black americans in our community making history, calling them our changemakers. every monday this month we're going to recognize those changemakers and give you a peek into their world. this week we're honoring the leader of a san jose nonprofit. >> yes, i spoke with malon ballantin, executive director of the african-american community service agency in san jose. the agency serves as a one-stop shop for resources for those living in santa clara county in addition to serving and offering information and n health and wellness, connections to educational opportunities, the center played a critical role for african-americans when 2020

dealt the community a one-two punch. the center was there to meet the needs of those impacted by covid-19. ballantin said their request for aid increased by nearly 40%. everything from ppe to personal care items like diapers and foods like nonperishables and months later, when the video of george floyd losing his life at the hands of a minneapolis police officer, the agency was then once again there to help offering mental health resources for those working through their feelings in that situation. >> san jose alone over 1 million people. we were mee faces and new communities that didn't know we existed but the issues existed. so those are some of the things that our board had to tackle with as well as our staff members and our team grew in regards to service-based initiatives that we took on. >> and to this day, the agency continues to address the needs of the community, so to milan

map, the big view of the map i should say we see green sensors for the most part, changes across the bay bridge. there were three vehicles involved in the crash after somebody or maybe a couple of folks hit that hose dropped by the concrete truck. that has cleared. we have two of the three vehicles cleared after a quick traffic break. they didn't stop traffic but they did block about half the lanes. that's why it's slow there. no metering lights yet so no backup at the bay bridge toll plaza right now, laura. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 5:32 right now. another mass vaccination site is set to open in the bay area, this one in the south bay. starting tomorrow, levi's stadium will provide thousands of shots every single day. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live at levi's this morning looking at some of the preparations that are now under way and what's going on. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. feels like i'm the first person at the tailgate party here at levi's stadium because folks will be getting vaccines inside

the stadium, not in the parking lot. this is not a drive-through location. these are some of the nurses who prepped levi's stadium for tomorrow's opening. levi's management provided the video, we should mention. tomorrow on day one, up to 5,000 people will roll up their sleeves to get vaccinated here at the stadium. when the site is up to full capacity, though, 15,000 shots a day levi's will be the largest mass vaccination site in the state. it's open to anyone 65 and older, but you have to live or work in santa clara county. no walk-ups. you have to make an appointment through the county at secfreevax.org. oakland coliseum opens february 16th for alameda county residents. we could see national guard soldiers helping with that effort there. because the virus is mutating, infectious disease experts say the mass vaccination sites are critical.

>> we need to vaccinate as many people as possible in a short amount of time as possible. that is not only because of the pandemic in general but because of the specter of the variants cycling that may become more resistant to the vaccines. >> reporter: also this week the federal government will push out a million vaccines to 6,500 pharmacies, eventually 40,000 pharmacies nationwide will have covid vaccines, including walgreens and rite aid, walmart, costco and grocery stores are getting some and cvs stores will start vaccinating people on thursday. that includes three cvs locations here in the bay area. now the thing to remember for t vaccine, that is here in california, 65 and up for essential workers, people with preexisting conditions. you have to have an appointment in almost every situation. so make sure you check with your county first, and see how they

want you to make that appointment here in santa clara unty, that is secfreevax.org. remember that one, that's where you get connected to the vaccine site, levi's stadium, health care provider or one of the other vaccination sites. in santa clara, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> good advice, don't just show up. about 15,000 new coronavirus cases are reported statewide, about two-thirds the peak numbers we saw in mid-december. yesterday was also reported 295 more people have died. that is nearly 40% below the daily two-week average. a new step to bring san francisco students back to the classroom, schools and teachers unions reached a tentative agreement but lots of people all the way up to san francisco city attorney are wondering if it will speed up the process. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in the city. pete, why are people so skeptical? >> good morning to you, cierra. one reason for the skepticism is

in the tentative agreement. there's no specific time frame as far as when the schools will reopen. some of the details between the union and school district. it's calling for limited school instruction if the city drops from the purple tier into the red tier. the sites having an opportunity to get vaccinated at the recommended dosage. if san francisco drops into the orange tier this tentative agreement says the students can return regardless of vaccine availability. here's what the teachers union and some parents are saying about this tentative agreement. >> this is a perfect example of how the city of san francisco can help us bring our students back, by helping get the vaccines into the arms of school workers. >> while we are h and glad toement today, i thinke's probably more work to e

done to make it a deal, an agreement that actually brings kids back this spring. >> remember the city of san francisco is still in the midst of this lawsuit with the san francisco unified school district regarding reopening. the city attorney calls this tentative agreement more of the same and the prerequisite for vaccination isn't needed if cdc protocols are in place for schools but this agreement could be ratified by the board of education by february 16th. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." peninsula native tom brady making it harder to argue that he isn't nfl's greatest ever. in tampa bay brady and the buccaneers dominated last year's champs, kansas city chiefs. the chiefs came in as favorites but super bowl lv was all brady and the bucs. he threw for three touchdowns.

six. coming up marcus washington will join news 15 minutes with highlights from the halftime show as well that was entertaining and the dog getting a lot of attention following the puppy bowl. but first, happening now, oakland's new police chief will officially be sworn in as the city's top cop. mayor libby schaaf made the announcement friday leronne armstrong will be oakland's new chief. he's been with the police department for 20 years and recently served as deputy chief. at noon today oakland leader also talk about new efforts to battle the surge of recent crime in the city's chinatown neighborhood. this unsettling surveillance video shows a violent attack last week that later led to an arrest. it's just one of more than a dozen recent cases. as part of today's news conference leaders will announce a new award to find those responsible in three other violent attacks. payments on hold, still ahead on "today in the bay," the new glitch that may keep some

new overnight, concerns about a boat owner after their boat catches fire on bethel island. east contra costa fire responded to the call just after 10:00 at the bethel island marina. crews say the fire was fully engulfed when they arrived. officials say the owner of the 30-foot cabin cruiser lives on board and has not been accounted for. the cause of the fire is under investigation. also new one san jose family had their sleep interrupted when a car slammed into their garage. it happened just after midnight on center road not far from monterey. a woman living in the home heard a loud boom, rushed out and saw a black audi had crashed into her garage. police showed up and this video shows a person being taken into custody. contra costa district attorney is under fire this morning. "the chronicle" reporting diana bectin held an outdoor party in august. bectin said in a statement on facebook she called local health officials for guidance ahead of

the event and says all guests wore masks and followed social distancing rules. new woes for the problem-plagued employment development department. technical glitches are slowing down distribution of new benefits tied to the second phase of the pandemic related federal stimulus that includes the $300 approved by congress at the end of december. the problem impacts people whose benefits ran out prior to december 26 who qualify for more payments. it will be another month before the agency manages to straighten it all out. president biden says iran has to make the first move if it wants the u.s. to lift sanctions against it. >> iran has been refining more uranium allowed under the iranian nuclear deal. >> that's the deal that of course the trump white house abandoned, cierra. our allies did not but iran responded to the u.s. breaking the deal by breaking the rules on how much and how refined that uranium can be. the u.s. responded with new

sanctions. in his first network interview just before the super bowl yesterday afternoon, president biden said the impetus was on the iranians to stop this behavior before we would drop the new sanctions or return to the nuclear deal. iran says it won't stop until the sanctions are lifted. in other words, both sides are saying the other side has to take the first step. back here at home, the new white house covid team will meet in public today virtually. president biden not expected to attend, leaving it up to the appointed scientists. we're giving word south africa stopped its testing of the astrazeneca vaccine saying it's not effective enough against that region's virus mutations. normally we would just concentrate on the president's first 100 days but of course the previous president is occupying a great deal of the headlines these days as former president trump's second imteachment trial gets under way tomorrow. it is expected to last through the end of the week.

donald trump charged with incitement of insurrection against the united states. some in congress have started stated trying someone after they leave office is unconstitutional. not only does the constitution not permit it, we've done it before albeit against someone who wasn't a former president. one of the republicans for the top legal advisers team for republicans say yes of course it is constitutional, writing an editorial in the "wall street journal," chuck cooper points out if you remove somebody from office via impeachment, then bar them from ever having office again, the person you're punishing is by definition a former officer holder. "given that the constitution permits the senate to impose the penalty of permanent disqualification only on former officeholders, it defies logic to suggest that the senate is prohibited from trying and convicting former officeholders." you'll recall in the days leading up to the first

later this morning. he's expected to make some stops in the bay area in oakland and san jose. and you can send the chiefs and buccaneers home. the real winner is chunky monkey. 70 puppies took part. the competition was "ruff." when chunky monkey fell asleep on the play, many sharing the memes and confessing their love for the fluffy pup. this is always really a great part of the weekend. it helps the dogs and cats find forever homes and i know laura, you are a part of that finding forever homes. you are a forever home for a lucky little pup out there. >> that's right. little pipsqueak i got him at the san jose animal shelter probably about six years ago. i guess i'm pouring him. he's always here with me in this in-house studio. he loves this pandemic.

in the midwest. ooh, all right. it is 23 degrees below zero in bismarck right now. oh, my goodness, and they're going to have more of that cold air moving in over the next few days, while it feels mild here, we'll have a couple of storm systems coming in, the first one on thursday, and the next one coming in on saturday. i know that may affect a lot of the weekend plans but this won't be a lot of rain and of course we do still need a lot more of it. we're looking at about 0.1" to 0.25" with this first round on thursday so hopefully we'll get a little bit more saturday. temperatures not changing too much here. we'll continue to see highs in the upper 50s and low 60s even into early next week. mike, heading out on the roads this morning a cool start for us but nothing like the midwest temperatures. >> yes, cool is fine. keep the minuses away from us as much as you can. looking out to the roadways, trying to keep this away from

folks but it's there, the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are not registered on in the system but there's metering because of the slow drive across the span. here is the approach, look at the map showing you a recovery actually over the incline and heading west in toward san francisco. earlier multivehicle crash looks like all the vehicles and whatever debris there was had been cleared from the span. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive but i did hear about a crash north 101 at tully. we may have a couple of lanes blocked. typical slowing, it's pretty focused around the 680 interchange. back to you. >> thank you. happening now, at least seven people are dead, 170 are missing in northern india after a glacier broke and swept away a hydroelectric dam project around 300 miles north of new delhi, triggered flooding, forcing the evacuation of village downstream. the water is washing away parts of the local dam and everything else in its path. most of the missing are said to be people working on that

"nbc bay area responds" to an alameda family not feeling any love from southwest airlines. >> consumer investigator chris chmura is here to show you how he got the case off the ground. >> tim irwin and his wife booked a southwest flight to atlanta to see their daughter get her graduate degree. but then covid-19 hit. they wanted to convert their tickets to points but there was a hiccup with his wife's account and couldn't get anyone at southwest to hel that left 670 bucks up in the air. he contacted us, we contacted southwest. here's what it told us our customer relations team will reach out to the customer directly.
