unprecedented legacy. >> we believed in us're going ut team tonight and got the job done. and for good reason. some are bringing up coronavirus concerns because there were lot of celebrations that included not a lot of social distancing and masks is that a worry? >> look, savannah, we saw some images of that in our story. i spoke with tampa bay's mayor yesterday. she told me they had donated 200,000 masks to the community here but it's not clear how many were in use last night from downtown tampa to the entertainment district, we saw crowds of people, many cases, packed together, had to be dispersed in some cases, and not a ton of masks as far as concerns that the stadium looks like it was crowded, the nfl pointed out there were 30,000 cutouts and 25,000 fans and all those fans were separated with friends and family might clear up the confusion on

this as former president trump's historic second impeachment trial is set to open tomorrow. let's get right to nbc's chief white house correspondent kristen welker she's on capitol hill for us this morning hi, kristen. good morning >> hi, savannah. good morning to you. president biden is aiming to counterprogram this week's impeachment trial of his predecessor, putting the focus, instead, on his push for a covid relief bill and the economy. all as washington gears up for the second impeachment trial of former president trump this week, president biden aiming to intensify his push for a $1.9 trillion covid relief package. in an interview that aired sunday, highlighting the urgency. the president was asked, is it a national emergency that nearly 20 million children have not been in the classroom for about a year >> it is a national emergency. i thinit ik time for schools to reopen safely, safely you have to have fewer people in the classroom. >> reporter: and with republicans and some democrats

get under way tuesday, with democrats accusing the former president of inciting the attack against the u.s. capitol 17 republicans would have to join democrats for a conviction, a high hurdle. >> the outcome is really not in doubt. that doesn't mean what happened on january the 6th was okay. it means this impeachment in the eyes of most republicans is an unconstitutional exercise. >> reporter: now, the former president's first impeachment trial was 21 days, the shortest at the time. both sides are signaling this trial could be even shorter. it's not clear if witnesses will be called, but democrats say they'll likely show videos of the attack against the capitol they have asked mr. trump to testify, but his lawyers say he's not going to appear the trump defense team still planning to argue it is unconstitutional to try to convict and remove a president who is no longer in office savannah >> kristen, another item from the president's super bowl interview, he was asked about whether president trump, former receive intelligence briefings,

something former presidents get as a matter of courtesy. what did he say about that >> reporter: that's right. that is making headlines this morning. president biden telling cbs news he does not think former president trump should get those intelligence briefings because of what he called his, quote, erratic behavior the white house later clarifying that no decision has yet been made in that regard and, ultimately, intelligence officials will determine whether mr. trump gets the briefings. savannah >> kristen welker at the start of a big week, thank you very much. craig joins us now another big headline coming out of the nation's capitol. >> good morning. tributes are pouring in for a towering figure in american politics, former secretary of state george shultz. he served under three presidents he played a pivotal role in ending the cold war. he died over the weekend nbc's chief washington correspondent andrea mitchel has more on his life good morning.

gotten to the point where they feel comfortable talking to each other, talking rather frankly. >> mr. president, are you happy with the deal? >> reporter: there were disagreements. shultz was cut out of the loop when reagan secretly sold arms to iran to try to win the freedom of american hostages telling a congressional inquiry he was deceived by the white house and cia director. >> there was a kind of guerrilla warfare going on. >> reporter: proud of his service as a marine during world war ii, shultz was shaken by the bombing of the marine bar rackss in beirut in '83, killing 241, and dedicated himself to reshaping u.s. policy so palestinians could seek self-determination after leaving government, he taught at stanford, working on arms control and becoming an ardant and climate activist. >> and people don't realize how easy it is to do something about the climate. >> reporter: in december, shultz, along with his wife, charlotte, were saluted at a virtual tribute for his 100th birthday >> i realize in listening to

all right. we're back with our series called "the price you pay. the pandemic has impacted the economy in so many ways, big and small. >> that's right. this morning, we're going to focus on the unprecedented year's impact on your taxes and what you need to know before filing in the coming weeks and months stephanie ruhle is our senior business correspondent stephanie, i think i promoted you. i know your social media inbox has been flooded with questions. we tried to pick out a few of the hot topics here's one from care rhee. she's been working home because of the pandemic. i'm a teacher, and i set up my office to be used solely for my classroom since march. >> i hate to tell you this, but

the answer is most likely no for those of us who have full-time jobs, we should check with our hr department maybe our employer offered us some sort of stipend for our home office gear if you get a w-2, if you have a full-time job, most likely, you cannot file any sort of deductions for your home office. now, if you're self-employed, if you're a consultant, if you run your own busin different story. >> a lot of folks, steph, have moved during this time they packed up, some have left cities, gone to other states even how does that affect how you file >> this is a super complicated one. work from home, we thought, that can be work from anywhere. college grads moved home with their parents to save money, maybe pay off debt many of us left cities, moved to the country. when we did that, we forgot to say, i might need to be filing my taxes differently i might need to tell that state. for some people, you might owe in two states.

now, certain states have relationships with one another for example, new york and new jersey, you get a credit for the other state. if there was ever a year wherer, this might be the year for this very reason. because right now, you could be in a situation where you've got to pay two states. >> okay. does the early bird catch the worm can you file taxes now if you're really on your game? >> early bird is always a good move you can't file until this friday, but you can definitely get your paperwork together. you've got a shorter window this year, so between now and actual deadline you want to get it done sooner remember, the sooner you file your taxes, the sooner you get that refund. tax experts always tell us, if you do direct deposit, do it online, you'll get the check sooner. >> steph, a lot of people lost their jobs during this time. they've been collecting unemployment and may be confused over, what am i supposed to do now? how do they file >> you have to file your taxes either way, but here's what's really important for people who lost their jobs or who maybe ended up in a different financial situation this year. remember the first stimulus payments were based on what you

made the previous year it's based on your taxes if suddenly in 2020 you were making a whole lot less, and you're eligible to get a stimulus check, you need to file your taxes asap. when they realize you are eligible from last year, you'll get the money you were owed. >> here's another question frank duffy with a question of taking out money from your 401(k) during the pandemic a lot of folks doing that. he says, what is up with 401(k)s? my wife and i cashed in portions to keep afloat at times in 2020. do you foresee any tax rules to help out those taxed for doing so >> this year, yes. normally, if you take money out from the 401(k) or retirement account before you're 60, you do have to pay a penalty plus taxes. not this year because of covid if you were sick or your spouse, you lost work, or you couldn't get child care, the c.a.r.e.s. act, which they passed early on during covid, gives you some relief you can take out up to $100,000 from your 401(k) and not pay a penalty. you've got three years to pay

and if you decide to put that money back in, you'll get those taxes back >> steph, lastly, a lot of people sometimes want to file an extension. they just want to kind of kick the can down the road because they don't want to deal with it. is that a good idea or bad idea? >> filing an extension is not a bad idea, but you need to do it. doesn't mean ignoring your taxes and paying them later, especially if you owe money. you want to get yourself on a payment plan, let the government know, i owe this money, i might not have it yet, and they can put you on a program, rather than just ignoring it and sticking it all in a shoebox in the back of your closet. then, you'll owe your taxes plus penalties plus interest. file now and tell the government about your situation >> all right stephanie, thank you very much >> steph, thanks. coming up, we are helping with your celebrations for valentine's day. we have lessons on picking the budget-friendly wines that go with the perfect meal or dessert. all of that.

damon, and he happens to tell a story about how he dropped out of harvard to write "goodwill hunting," follow your dreams, i thought that meant i should, too. i dropped out of school and moved to new york to go to a conservatory. >> it worked out for you here you are you have a book, it's awesome. >> yeah, it did. >> let's talk about a few pairings for us. what's the first one >> i do. the very first one is a spicy tuna roll. sushi is one of the things we love to splurge on, especially for a valentine's day or galentine's day meal it is a good one my recommendation with that would be to do a sparkling rose. if you're looking for something to give you a good bang for your buck, a rose in spanish. would be an excellent option if you want to splurge and if you want to go for champagne, i'd recommend one that is super dry. >> how about a lasagna

what'd you pair with that? >> with the lasagna, i would love if everyone would step out of the box if you had a syrah, you know the good ones can be expensive if you can step off the beaten path a little bit and go to place you might not have guessed, say, anywhere like morocco, you can get a phenomenal syrah from one of the best winemakers doing it in the game today for a fraction of the price, around 20 bucks >> vanessa, can i ask a question can you get a good -- to pair with whatever, a good box wine >> you actually can. it's one of those things, i'm actually a big advocate of it. if it is a young wine, fresh wine, something meant to be drank relatively quick from coming to the market, it is actually more environmentally friendly to ship that way. it is not going to, you know, hurt the quality of the wine at all. i wouldn't age my bordeauxes in a box, but a fresh, everyday
