have already gotten their shots as "today in the bay" starts right now. good wednesday morning. halfway through the work week. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm cierra johnson. marcus washington will join us in our next half hour. we'll have traffic in a moment. let's start off with weather with meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> good morning. and it's starting out with some patches of fog and mild temperatures but we are in for some sunshine today, and i think at this point, we need it. but we will see some rain coming in tomorrow, with off and on showers, as we go through the forecast, a lot of changes ahead. as we take a look at our current visibility, this shows where the fog is the thickest and it's mostly up around napa right now, as we go into today, we are going to see those temperatures reaching into the mid to upper 60s, so we are going to have a nice warmup for today. we'll talk about this and that rain moving in, that's coming up in a few minutes. but mike, looks like the commute should roll pretty good

for now. >> yes, but like we said, napa, so be careful, that may be an issue finding your off-ramp sign but ir'familiar. getting out to the roadways on the maps farther south, green sensors. a great drive. the note of course the overnight roadwork closes that posey from alameda to oakland. use high street or fruitvale street. i see slowing headed toward the high street bridge. there's something reported nearby. cleanup efforts are beginning from an oil spill in san francisco bay. overnight some 600 gallons of oil spilled from an pipeline in chevron's richmond refinery, happened yesterday afternoon. the spill is said to be contained and as "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd reports, there are still many unanswered questions. >> reporter: nighttime cleanup has been suspended, this following a petroleum spill from a pipe near the chevron refinery long wharf, a major tanker

terminal and port facility in point richmond. >> i smelled this smell coming in. i thought it's either chevron or the wharf, and then i heard the helicopters and so i thought okay, it's the wharf. >> reporter: helicopters the fi will it be the last. >> took a while for chevron to discover it, and then a bit more time passed before it was reported to the county, so sometime close to 3:30 is when the county received notification. >> reporter: fire crews, the coast guard, along with hazmat teams, are working to contain the leak that was reported to be spilling five gallons of petroleum product a minute into the san francisco bay. the pipeline is considered an underground highway for products to get to and from tankers into the refinery. >> this pipe carries petroleum products from the shoreline to the tanker, and the leak

occurred in the line. it's yet to be determined where, what caused it, all of that. >> reporter: supervisor john gioia was told the line was not under pressure during the leak. it is yet to be determined how much petroleum leaked into the bay. >> this is unacceptable. we're in an urban environment and we expect industry to operate safely, not have spills in the bay. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." we are hoping to get an update later from fremont police who are still on the hunt for two juvenile suspects they say exchanged gunfire with officers. it happened yesterday when officers tried to pull over a car near stevenson boulevard and boyce road. police say several juveniles jumped from the car and ran. one fired at officers who then fired back. no one was hurt and officers did arrest two suspects. two more finalists vying to become san jose's next police

chief. the city manager ace anchorage alaska police chief and retired assistant police chief larry cerratto are in the running. they extended the last month after minneapolis police chief and former oakland police chief ann kirkpatrick withdrew their name. some students will get to return to the classroom this morning in the east bay, after nearly a year of being cooped up inside their homes without seeing many of their friends. the san ramon valley unified school district allowing students in transitional kipd garten through second grade to return. next week, students through third and fifth grade and special day classes will return. around 10,000 students will start in-person learning and nearly 25,000 will continue to learn remotely. the "press democrat" is looking closer the reason sonoma county schools are slower to reopening than neighboring

it is 4:47. here is a live look over san jose. a beautiful shot, all the lights, no sun up yet. still pretty cool this morning. meteorologist kari hall will look at what we can expect for the rest of the week. good morning, kari. >> good morning. we're going to see a little bit of everything over these next few days. we're starting out with some mild temperatures and our sky is clearing out, after a lot of clouds, and even some sprinkles the past couple of days. as we get a look at what you're feeling right now as you head out the door, it is 55 degrees right now in brentwood. that's one of the warmer spots, but we're mostly seeing temperatures in the 40s especially for the south bay, parts of the peninsula, over toward the east bay. north bay right now 44 degrees in santa rosa. so as we're starting out, we're going to have some clouds and some patches of fog but as you're home schooling today, headed out for recess in antioch, expect a lot of sun as our temperature also warm up and it's going to be a nice one.

check out that high 65 degrees for today, and that's basically what we're seeing all around the bay area for today with some low to mid-60s, it's going to feel a little bit like springtime but we'll also have some spring showers headed our way. we have several storm systems that are just lined up out there, over the ocean that will be moving in. the first one arrives tomorrow and then we'll see another one right behind that for early saturday. as we go through the time line once again we're dry today. we'll see the rain rolling in, for tomorrow mostly late morning into the afternoon we'll see this pushing through fairly quickly, clearing out by friday but the next round of rain coming in on saturday. so we'll see a couple of rounds of rain bringing us a quarter to half inch of rain and a big boost in the sierra snowpack. around lake tahoe still about 71% of the normal amount of snow. we have more work to do but we do have some more snow in the forecast and it is good to see

that we could possibly get another foot of snow over the next few days but it could be as high as 30 inches as we look at some of those upper elevations. so that's something we'll be watching over the next few days. what's going on right now the commute, mike? >> right now things are moving smoothly around the bay. better news for oakland, getting into oakland from alameda, posey tube, typical maintenance cleared, we get the thumbs up there, good news. you can take the bridges if you want to but closer to downtown oakland, just go under the water. looking over the water, the bay bridge shows a smooth flow of traffic and the approach through contra costa and alameda counties. north bay no problems. south bay moves at speed but there is a little bit of slowing for highway 84 and out of the altamont pass, typical. back to you, cierra. no surprises here, president biden opposes california's effort to recall governor newsom. the issue came up jan psaki sai

she hadn't spoke within biden and later made the position clear. "in addition to sharing a commitment to a range of issues with gavin newsom from addressing the climate crisis to getting the pandemic control the president opposes a recall." right now two-thirds of california voters agree with biden. new details as officials in charge of the high speed rail project want to tap into big funding to get the job done. those behind the long efforts to connect san francisco to los angeles want to use more than $4 billion in voter approved bond money. if approved the funds would be used to complete ongoing construction in the central valley. the state now expects to finish that construction by 2023, a year later than the last proposal. even with all the covid problems and the california prison system, prison guards

collectively are still apparently a little hesitant about getting vaccinated according to "the sacramento bee." testifying in sacramento a corrections department health officer said only half are ready to roll up their sleeves but he added another quarter would "like to see their buddy get it first" but they still want it." two-thirds of state prison workers statewide received their first vaccine or been infected along the way. taking a live look at los angeles this wednesday morning, finally a glimmer of hope in the city that's seen some of the worst covid-19 numbers in the country. the city's hospitalizations are less than half of its high point. early last month, roughly 8,000 people in los angeles were infected in the hospital and that number is now below 4,000. this morning, a lab is apologizing for a computer glitch that sent hundreds of people in southern california into panic after giving them false positive covid results.

health leaders in san diego county called nearly 400 people telling them their negative tests were wrong and they now had covid-19 but after an investigation, the u.s. specialty labs who conducted the tests say a glitch by a vendor that sends information to the state changed the results. here's what the lab owner has to say about the mixup. >> you know, really very disappointed and sorry and you know, wish it didn't happen. i don't know what else i can say. >> the lab say the glitch has been corrected. on hold. coming up next on "today in the bay," what governor gavin newsom is saying about the possible return for high school sports and the reason it could take some time to see his playbook. plus red carpet ready. the top films making the oscar short list of nominations this year. but first, happening now, pets, cats and dogs in south korea will now be tested for covid-19 if they show symptoms.
