i'm laura garcia. >> i'm krz kris sanchez. mike will be tracking the rolls. kari, when will that be? >> we'll see rain later this afternoon but the wide view of all of those storms lined up out there in the pacific and as we mentioned one, two, three storms is on the way and we're not looking at really strong storms, but they will each bring in beneficial rain to the region. this one starts out with light spotty sprinkles for the north bay and heavier later on this afternoon as it moves into the north bay by about 1:00 to 2:00 today. we'll talk more about this and what's ahead in the forecast coming up. mike, how is it looking heading to work? >> overall things are moving smoothly, but heading to work from the peninsula towards san francisco look at this some slowing for a crash that happened recently over there in northbound 101 approaching oyster point.

the block is making it slow for most lanes prior to that interchange. san francisco, a smooth flow of traffic from the city from the bay bridge toll plaza a little slowing on the sensors and the toll plaza traffic builds up a bit, most of the slowing on the incline. back to you. >> thanks so much. we begin at the nation's capitol, it is day three of donald trump's impeachment trial. house managers say trump strategically lit the fire that started the insurrection. susan joins us live in washington. never before seen video yesterday and what should we expect today? >> that's right, laura. we expect more video to be shown today. yesterday was an emotional day for senators who witnessed the actual insurrection here at the capitol january 6th after all of this video, eight hours of testimony yesterday, they in a way lived through it again. >> house managers prosecuting

donald trump continue presenting their case today after showing dramatic video wednesday of the january 6th insurrection not before seen publicly. the video rekindling memories of the horror for senators and the nation. >> i'm angry, i'm disturbed, i'm sad. >> they came, draped in trump's flag and used our flag, the american flag, to batter and to bludgeon. >> reporter: house managers detailed donald trump's efforts to overturn the election. >> we were getting ready to win this election. frankly we did win this election. >> reporter: alleging the riot was far more choreographed than it appeared. >> there was method in the madness that day. >> they believed that they were following his orders. they said so. >> we were invited by the president of the united states.

a.m. it is 6:03. new this morning those who lost a loved one due to covid-19 can get help with funeral expenses. barbara lee says families can receive up to $7,000. the money is coming from fema. funds will be retroactive through the start of the pandemic. this is part of the covid relief bill passed in december. by now you've probably heard about another covid variant coming from another place. this one identified first in south africa and has now arrived in the bay area. stanford labs discovered one case in alameda and santa clara counties. each involve international travelers who quarantined when they returned. so far there's no evidence the variant is more deadly but it has to be said to be more resistant to the vaccines already approved. coming up in the next half hour a closer look at covid-19 travel restrictions under the biden administration. and find out who can get the

the family of alex out of chicago claims the 20-year-old last saw last year saw negative ambulance balance of $730,000 in his trading company and believed that was the sum of money he owed. the family says kearns tried to reach robinhood to clarify what he saw but could not get through to the company. he took his life after leaving a note expressing confusion over the financial loss. >> i realized that someone that i love opened up his screen that has a user interface that presented them with their perception of an obligation that didn't even exist. >> reporter: [ inaudible ] targets young investors without them understanding the risk. robinhood executives are expected to testify before a house panel on exploiting trading turmoil in gamestop corporation and related stocks. in a statement robinhood says in

over about two hours on tuesday. so far authorities say there's been no sign of impact to wildlife. more people are taking a stand to stop the violence against oakland's asian american community. one group of volunteers is patrolling chinatown. video from one attack shows a 19-year-old man shoved to the ground. the violence is sparking anger even drawing the attention of hollywood actors like daniel wu and daniel dae kim. they put up a $25,000 reward for information to help police find those responsible. one man is now in custody tied to at least three cases. >> the whole neighborhood is under siege. people beat you up, beat rob you every day. at least 10 to 15 cases just within a few blocks here. >> also concerning, friday's lunar new year. it's normally a time when families give each other money and some fear that they may

become victims while they're using their atm. you have to be on high alert. developing right now former stanford employee accused of stealing hundreds of university laptops. prosecutors say eric sold hundreds of stolen laptops over three years costing the school around $2 million. his sister also worked at stanford. they say she would buy the computers and her brother resold them along with an accomplice. prosecutors say for now only casnayda has been charged. switch gears right now. there's rain coming our way. we've had a few days off, but we certainly need it by this afternoon, should we all be feeling it? >> yes. i think so. i'm going to get my plants ready for the rain that will be coming in later today. we have a couple spotty light sprinkles for the north bay, we're starting out the morning with storm ranger tracking where we are seeing that rain. it's mostly been over some of the hills in the north bay so

we'll also see some of the valley fog to start out. as you head out for your morning commute in parts of the south bay rain not until later. we'll time it out for all of our microclimates coming up. how is it looking for the commute across the bay area? >> i have technically breaking news in the traffic center, technically because let's look at the map. we have slowing and the issue north bay 101, the crash and the overturned vehicle heading just past oyster point boulevard. it's been called a traffic alert by chp but the slowing started to clear north of sfo. i'm going to leave that as an alert for you but note the slowing has cleared there. the rest of the bay moves slowly and bay bridge toll plaza moving so is freemont, more traffic into the south bay. back to you. >> thank you. coming up next, scott mcgrew facebook making promises again. >> again. boy, they make a lot of them. they're saying maybe fewer political posts after their

facebook is going to have to answer. twitter says it will ban donald trump forever even if he's running for president next cycle and wins and is president for four more years. a commentator on nbc yesterday pointed out if trump had twitter right now he would probably be hurting his own impeachment case live tweeting it. >> hid in the inside and emergency escorted away because of fear. >> that's one of the video clips played by the house prosecutors at the second day of the trump trial. they got it from parler. parler doesn't exist anymore but computer users were able to download parler's database of content and user information. parler left it exposed and that's been a treasure trove for house impeachment managers who have an unfettered look inside all of those parler conversations even the private ones. 793,000 americans told the

government they needed unemployment benefits after losing their jobs last week, more than expected. the head of the fed jerome powell warns the economy faces months of difficulty ahead pushing stock prices higher because investors expect the fed's interest rates to remain low. low rates, more money in the system. and best buy says it will cut jobs perhaps cut the number of stores as well. now the thing is sales at best buy are up a lot, but people in the pandemic are not doing what you're seeing in the video. they're buying tvs, video game consoles and freezers, sure, but getting them delivered and doing it online, having it shipped or picking it up curbside and for that you need fewer employees. >> yeah. what a -- >> check out my -- but i don't need to look. thanks. >> thank you very much. let's check in with marcus washington right now.

>> marcus, the boss facing a lot of fallout this morning. >> yeah, absolutely. we are hearing that bruce springsteen was arrested in november for driving while intoxicated in new jersey. and because of that the automaker jeep is responding with that news. they're pulling what was a really popular commercial during the super bowl that commercial is now being pulled from airwaves staring the rock legend. according to a spokesperson for national park service springsteen was arrested in november and gateway national recreation area known as sandy hook and there has been no comment from springsteen's reps. social media has called gina karano to lose her role in man da loran. lucas film cut tice after she posted messages. the company called the messages unacceptable. nbc news has reached out for comment. and

notice something missing the next time you're at san francisco's palace of fine arts. two of the resident swans are being taken care of at the zoo. palace workers posted this photo to twitter yesterday. care takers noticed blanch, the 25-year-old white footed polish mute swan was having problems a few weeks ago. her companion a 14-year-old swan named blue boy joined her at the zoo on tuesday as a precaution and maybe to provide comfort. wow. who knew blanch was a cougar with blue boy. >> hello. >> oh, my goodness. let's talk to kari. good morning, kari. >> good morning. we're starting out with some clouds and we're getting ready for some rain. that's set to move in later today. right now tracking spotty light showers starting to move in.

home schooling in petaluma and looking for those opportunities to get outside, get out there early if you can in between the breaks with the virtual learning. later today, we'll see that rain coming in and it's basically going to be raining all throughout the evening. we'll first start to see the of heavier rain starting to roll late this even the rain will start to taper off from north to south. tomorrow looks good and we're going to take a break with sunshine in the forecast, saturday a new storm system comes in but it looks like this one continues to weaken so it may not really ruin your outdoor plans on saturday. the rain looks very spotty and is mostly throughout the morning for saturday afternoon. looks like we are also going to be in the clear. sunday is looking good too. now there will be a third storm system approaching on monday and that is what we could experience as we start out our morning

time except for the peninsula where we're looking at the continued alert of the breaking news here, north 101 towards oyster point boulevard the overturned crash still has a backup. the backup at the toll plaza, the map shows you slowing approaching that portion of north 101 from sfo past oyster point. the good news no one was in the overturned vehicle. minor injuries on the scene. back to you. thank you very much. on capitol hill house impeachment managers are building the case donald trump incited an insurrection. they're expected to wrap up that case today and trump's defense will follow. yesterday senators clearly rattled by some of the graphic evidence detailing what happened on january 6th. many believe donald trump will still be acquitted in the end because democratic senators won't have the votes from republicans. coming up in less than 15 minutes, we'll check in with scott mcgrew bringing his

analysis on the trial. california is showing more signs of progress in fighting the pandemic. cases are down, but more thanh . approaching 3.5 million. but new covid concerns are popping up here in the bay area regarding the vaccine crunch and the new covid variants. let's start with bob redell live outside levi stadium the mass vaccination site. bob, any indication we might run out of doses here as we're getting started? >> so far no indication of that as you were mentioning, kris. levi stadium behind me in santa clara started administering a thousand doses a day. last week mess coney center became a mass vaccination site and the oakland coliseum will become one as well. los angeles is temporarily shutting down dodger stadium and

four other mass vaccination sites because it's expected to exhaust supply of the moderna vaccine today. mayor eric garcetti said l.a. only received 16,000 new doses this week, 3,000 more than it uses in a typical day but the state of california set to receive another 622,000 doses next week. that's 29,000 more shots than we received this week. so far, as you can see on your tv screen, california has administered nearly 5 million doses. that's about 65% of our allotment. cvs pharmacy was supposed to start its mass vaccination program today but that got pushed back to tomorrow. at 100 locations throughout the state including at least three here in the bay area namely sunnyvale, sf and sonoma. the rollout for california pharmacies is limited to 82,000 doses. the goal for cvs long term is 20 million to 25 million shots a

month. those vaccinations by the way are appointment only. reporting live here in santa clara, bob redell, "today in the bay." now that bay area has two confirmed cases of the covid variant first identified in south africa a watchful eye on sfo where travellers are coming in from international locations. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live to explain how researchers connected the dots to those travelers. good morning, cierra. >> they were able to connect the dots and pin it to international travel how the variant was able to make its way to the bay area. one of those individuals traveled as recently as mid-january. they had been quarantined and still fell ill. health officials were able to confirm the two cases of that specific variant, one out of the santa clara county and the other out of alameda county. according to dr. moss, alameda health officer some counties like alameda are working to

improve how they monitor for that variant. dr. moss says his county is expected to start receiving reports from labs detecting variants of the virus in the coming weeks and as the strain first identified in south africa is identified in the bay researchers are looking out for other variants including strains first identified in the uk and brazil. the question across the united states right now, how effective are those available vaccines across the various strains? dr. anthony fauci spoke on the "today" show with savannah guthrie about the variant. >> the sobering news it does spread more rapidly. we know that from the uk experience. the uplifting news is that the vaccines that we now have, the moderna and the pfizer and very likely the ones that will be coming on-line soon, seem to do well against this uk variant. >> reporter: dr. fauci said the

next step to slow the spread of the variants will be stepping up public health missions of things like masking and physical distancing combing with vaccinations, those two steps should be able to slow the variants. it is important to note that the cdc is doing two main things to help slow the spread through travel. the first is requiring folks coming to the united states from international countries to provide a documentation that they are negative. that would take them within three days of travel. the other is listing all of the countries that are high risk for covid and its variants that can be found on the cdc website. it is important to remain vigilant in the midst of the vaccines because some of the variants are making their way to the bay area. live in front of sfo, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. mane californians this morning wondering if gavin newsom will deliver on what he calls a $6 billion early action package for school reopenings.

he suggested an announcement could come as soon tomorrow. some bay area school districts are stuck with their unions unwilling to agree on reopening classrooms without vaccinations. the issue has come up for schools including those in san francisco and berkeley. other districts say they're waiting for more guidance from the state. renters struggling to make it in the bay will be receiving a boost from the county. san mateo county supervisors setting aside nearly 47 million dollars in rental assistance for tenants and landlords impacted by the pandemic. supervisors say for assistance over the past year, five times normal rate there's no timetable for distributing that money. marcus washington back with a look at the new way to help you figure out your vaccine journey. >> we're going to tackle that question when will i be able to get that vaccine. there is a new way to get information out to you to get alert on changes hopefully

new video of the january 6th attack. you've seen this video but house managers showed this, new security footage from inside as the invader reached the windost secret service as the attackers headed his way and escaped with moments to spare. we heard again as the trump supporters called for pence to be executed. >> trump suppers had erected agallos on the lawn front of the capitol building. is another group of rioters chanted "hang mike pence" as they stood in the open door of the capitol building. you can hear the security alarm through the door in the background and you can hear the mob calling for the deaths of the vice president of the united states.

surge of arrivals in 2018 and 2019. the border patrol this week reopened a large tent facility in south texas to house migrant families and children. president joe biden once again reaching out to california in order to fill his cabinet. the president has nominated julie su as his deputy labor secretary. she's been california's labor secretary since 2018 but her labor and workforce department has been under the microscope recently in connection with the massive unemployment fraud at the employment development department. the problems began long before su took over that department. this morning, we want to check in with "today in the bay" anchor marcus washington to talk about this new website that's up to help people navigate that daunting process of figuring out when you can get vaccinated and how to sign up, the works. it can be overwhelming for a lot of folks, marcus. >> it really can, laura.

for a lot of people finding out who is able to get the vaccine right now is still tough, but hopefully this will all help, you know, manage things and make it easier for a lot of people. this won't determine who will get the vaccine but when it is your turn it will help make things move smoothly. this is a partnership with nbc news and nbc comcast universal, the site launching today is called a one-stop shop. once on the site you will log into your location and information will determine when you will be eligible to get vaccine. >> it will lead you to where you can go, what sites you can go to and keep those updated which is more important so instead of you having to constantly go back it will notify you when changes have been made. these are important steps to make it easier because if it's easier you're more likely to get the vaccine. >> dr. torres says this is a great resource for a lot of people and hopefully make it easier for people to get the

not going to do that. >> that's one of the trophies they might let you touch but that was a long ago. >> all right. the celebration for them still continues. we're celebrating the fact that we have rain headed our way and three storms that will be moving in and going to see them basically every other day here. none of them are really that strong and the first one starting to bring in light showers to parts of the north bay. we've been watching this approaching and storm ranger powered and ready to track it. you can look at what storm ranger is picking up on. if you have the nbc bay area app you will zoom into where you live and the north bay where we are starting to see green here on the map. you're dry from clover dale up towards petaluma as well as we're also seeing the rain extending up toward ukiah. 101 starting to get soggy but if you're wondering about the

pollen count having to take your allergy medication every day, moderate levels of cedar, ash, elm and pine and we should get some relief because the rain actually helps to wash some of that pollen out of the air. it basically pulls that pollen out of the air, brings it to the ground and breaks it apart into smaller pieces and not just floating through the air and making us sneeze, but we may see an increase in mold pollen. with all of that rain that's something we will be watching. the rain first starts to spread into the north bay over the next couple hours and then the rest of us seeing it through this afternoon. gets heavier later this evening but tomorrow we wake up to a clear sky and we're going to see some sunshine once again. we will have to keep the umbrella close by on saturday as we see the second storm system coming in with spotty rain. what's the update on the morning commute? >> kari, we still have the breaking news over on the peninsula. let's take you out to north 101

welcome back. a look at our top stories that we're following this thursday >> stanford researchers confirm the arrival of a covid variant in the bay area first identified in south africa. there have been two cases in the bay area one in alameda county and one? santa clara county and each involved international travelers who quarantined upon their return. while there is no evidence this variant is more deadly it is more resist tonight already approved -- resistant to covid vaccines. the daily count is down two-thirds from the peak of last month infections nearing 392,000, more than 4700 people in the bay area alone have died. more people are taking a stand to stop the violence against oakland's asian american community. it's even prompted one group of volunteers to start patrolling the city's chain thattown.
