day. >> the ground hog got it right this year. we want to get to our top story right now. the impeachment trial of former president trump after the defense rested on friday. it looked like the trial would wrap up today, but now news of a contentious call between former president trump and the top house republican as rioters stormed the capitol could mean witnesses. kelly o'donnell is at the white house. >> reporter: this is a dramatic twist on what was already an unusual working saturday for the impeachment trial against the former president. while closing arguments were expected to be up next, a democratic senator says the trial should be put on pause because of new information so that witnesses can be interviewed and more evidence considered. donald trump's state of mind on trial. senators as impeachment jurors asked whether the former president knew about the danger to his own vice president.

senators control their own process so it is possible, however unlikely, that they could take that advice from sheldon white house and mix things up on what was expected to be the final day. peter? >> kelly o'donnell at the white house this morning. thanks. we now want to bring in nbc's garrett haike live from the white house. let's take about the dramatic developments from the white house. have calls for witnesses to be called to testify. so do these overnight developments change things and how likely is it that witnesses will be zmauld. >> reporter: kristin, getting witnesses to call about the mccr the case that the former president knew the vice president and members of congress were in grave danger and he never did anything about it. unless and until those calls come from republicans, perhaps one of the six we know is considering the possibility of

conviction or someone further to the right who hasn't indicated much interest in this trial, i feel like it's unlikely the managers will take time to call for witnesses. we're still more likely to wrap up the trial. >> you're speaking about republicans. how about the top republican, mitch mcconnell still hasn't said which way he's going to vote, whether to acquit or to convict. how do you see him leaning right now? is there any chance any additional republicans would 350e8 off? >> mcconnell has played his cards very close to the vest. he said this is going to be a vote of conscience and he's condemned the former president's behavior but he's voted twice to say this trial is unconstitutional. we don't know which way he'll break. it seems unlikely he'll vote to convict after saying it is unconstitutional. talking to republican senators last night, a lot of them are clearly troubled by the former president's behavior. they'd like to see some kind of condemnation of it happen with you but the constitutional

you'll see it will last until mid afternoon. this will start to peel away. there's a secondary area of low pressure that's going to bring rain to georgia, south and north carolina on sunday with the potential for a little bit of icing on the northern side of that tomorrow as well. we're looking for a coating of ice to 1/10 of an inch coating the power lines could lead to power outages. we have brutally cold temperatures in the northern plains and upper midwest. wind chills this morning, it feels like 30 below in south dakota. same for lincoln nebraska. then this afternoon wind chills will still feel like they are well below zero. bismarck will feel like it's 28 below zero this afternoon. very dangerous wind chills. then we've got the next storm. this is a monday/tuesday time frame. heavy snow likely across texas, oklahoma, arkansas seeing significant amounts of snow 467891 out of 48 states could see snow through tuesday.

should be worn properly, social distancing should be enforced, hands should be washed frequently. cleaning and proper ventilation and saying contact tracing protocols should be followed. >> schools know how to do this. >> reporter: in southern california doctors with the american academy of pediatrics are calling for a return to the classroom saying students well-being is on the line. >> weight gain from not being able to be physically active, social/emotional health. >> the debate is heating up. the city attorney is suing the school district to reopen with the mayor's support. >> we support our teachers. we support our educators. we want them to be safe but we also know our children are broken. >> reporter: teachers and administrators want to return, too, but safely. >> dr. fauci has said repeatedly that we don't set the time line, the virus sets the time line. >> the district wants educators and staff vaccinated first, but

allegations that his administration under counted the number of covid deaths in nursing homes. nbc's kathy park is following this story from new york for us. kathy, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning to you. during the height of the pandemic here in new york, governor cuomo was often haled a hero for the handling of the covid outbreak, but in recent weeks the narrative has shifted with more democrats and republicans demanding accountability on reporting of nursing home deaths. this morning growing fallout for new york governor andrew cuomo and his administration over withholding covid death toll numbers in nursing homes. his top aide, melissa deresidential -- derosa saying we froze concerned the information was going to be used against us. after receiving a request from the department of justice last year. those comments first reported by "the new york post" sparked immediate backlash there lawmakers on both sides of the

aisle. democratic state leader said this is a betrayal of the public trust. tom reed said he's filing a criminal complaint against cuomo's aide. >> she needs to be arrested. following this she said we needed to temporarily set aside the legislature's request and deal with the federal request first. we informed the houses of this at the time. we were comprehensive and transparent in our responses to the doj and then had to immediately focus our resources on the second wave and vaccine rollout. we could not fulfill their request as quickly as anyone would like. the growing scrutiny comes just weeks after new york attorney general leticia james released a report saying the state had undercounted nursing home deaths by as much as 50%. they say it was 15,000 much higher than originally reported. on friday 14 democratic state

senators called to repeal cuomo's emergency powers in the pandemic joining the republican-led effort. governor cuomo defended his administration's actions in late january. >> 1/3 of all deaths in this nation are from nursing homes. new york state we're only about 28%, only, but we're below the national average in number of deaths in nursing homes. but who cares, 33, 28 died in a hospital, died in a nursing home, they died. >> reporter: often praised for his leadership, the governor is coming under fire and tackling a new crisis. and governor cuomo was at the white house yesterday to discuss covid relief with other governors and mayors and while in washington he did not address the ongoing controversy here in new york. kristin, peter. >> kathy park in new york this

morning. kathy, thanks so much. also this morning you might soon be paying more for postage while getting slower mail in return. nbc news has learned that postmaster general wants told get rid of first class mail while raising prices as well. the news was first reported by the washington post. the postal service has already been hit with big delivery delays in the past couple of months. critics say the changes would lead to a, quote, death spiral for the postal service. sad news for "jeopardy" fans. brayden smith passed away suddenly at the age of 24. smith was one of the late host alex trebek's champions earning more than $100,000 shortly before trebek's death in november. smith had been looking forward to competing on jeep did i's tournament of champions. there's still no cause of death that's been shared at this time. we do want to take a turn though, get a check of the rest of the forecast with dylan. what are you tracking? >> good morning, guys.

we are tracking quite a bit there. we have a big storm out in the pacific. a big storm through monday and tuesday. snow falling in chicago. heavy rain in atlanta. south carolina, north carolina seeing heavy rain, too. icing is likely through virginia where it's already very slippery and dangerous. this will continue to make its way through the mid-atlantic. then a second area of low pressure will move in as we go through tomorrow bri waking up to temperatures mildly in the 50s. 52 right now in san jose. but we are monitoring some shower activity that is expected to this afternoon. temperatures will climb into the upper 50s, low 60s. morning rain chances, clearing into the afternoon. and expect to see storm rangers scanning right now. you can see a couple of showers pushing through the north bay, san rafael area. breezy conditions later this afternoon. full forecast at 7:00.
