arizona. many weddings have been canceled over the past year due to the pandemic but some lucky couples in contra costa county were still able to tie the knot on valentine's day. the contra costa county clerk officiated 21 wedding ceremonies yesterday. this is the look at some of the happy couples. some of the newlyweds telling us it's not exactly what they planned for but still, a very special day. >> we've been planning this wedding for about two years now? >> yes. this isn't exactly how we thought it would be but i'm still happy with the outcome. >> i agree, yes. >> yes, that's good. he's okay. all the couples did have to follow covid protocols including keeping socially distanced while inside of the clerk's office but nothing could stop the excitement of tying the knot on the most romantic day of the year. looks like lots of love there. wishing them all the best. >> yes. right now at 6:00, breaking news we're following, the search in contra costa county for a gunman in a deadly late night

looking good out there. i'm glad to have this >> good to have you back and you're feeling good, too. >> i'm feeling will get you through with the commute but first we have to start out with the weather for you this morning. a wet start to the day, kari. >> yes, you were saying you had to drive and also deal with the windshield wipers on this morning. we're seeing light rain moving through. storm ranger is tracking it for us. i wanted to zoom into contra costa county, where we could see sop light rain moving into antioch and we'll see some of those showers with us for the next few hours. this is all a part of a bigger system that's bringing some very soggy weather to parts of the region, but not all of us are seeing it. so we'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the week coming up. mike, of course, this may slow some people down, even though the traffic seems to be fairly light. >> yes, there are fewer drivers today because businesses those who had been open may be off for the holiday.

looking at the maps at speeds. watch the speeds because it is slicker conditions in most of the area and going to get rain and police activity we'll talk about that in a second. quick look at the bay bridge shows you what we're dealing with, lighter traffic, slicker roadways. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:03 right now. in contra costa county overnight a man was shot and killed. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in antioch. this isn't the only shooting from the weekend that you're following this morning. >> reporter: correct. . is the deadliest, one man was shot and killed on putnam, the house on ennia way not far not for from the contra loma exit. this happened around 10:30 last

night. that man was seated in that suv. police tell us when they arrived they found that man parked in the vehicle parked in front of the house with at least one gunshot wound. officers performed first aid, they called for an ambulance but the man died on the scene. he was 47 years old, from antioch. a second man, 37 years old, also from antioch, he was shot. he's been taken into surgery, is expected to survive. police haven't indicated what led up to this shooting. they are still, the detectives are still trying to identify any suspects, persons of interest so there have been no arrests. yesterday morning around 2:00 a.m., three men were shot at turk and hyde in sf, one with life-threatening injuries. sfpd is investigating whether that was related to the shooting the night before. you can see the video from that. that happened around 6:00 saturday night, when six people were wot near third street and cassada avenue in the bay district. their conditions are unknown.

sfpd is moving officers from other parts of the city to help stop the violence in bay view. oakland early saturday morning 1:00 a.m., six other men were shot near ninth and washington street in downtown, not far from police headquarters. the sixth victim survived. police are offering a $30,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." the second impeachment trial of president trump, former president trump i should say is now over. he was acquitted. tracie potts is following the very latest on what is next from washington. >> reporter: the u.s. senate is taking a break this week, considering the fallout of acquitting former president trump and where that leaves the republican party. >> we need to unite the party, trump plus is the way back in 2022. >> i think our leadership will be different going forward. >> reporter: democrats now turning to covid relief, writing

up details for a vote next week. >> if a month from now as unemployment checks are at the verge of stopping for 10 million americans, we can proceed with a democrat only bill. >> reporter: the proposal includes billions for schools which the cdc says should be spent on ventilation. the agency says that plus wearing masks and vaccinating teachers should get kids safely back to class. >> we know that it's possible to reopen schools safely without all of the teachers being vaccinated. >> reporter: vice president harris tells hbo, the administration was left with no national strategy. >> we're starting from scratch on something that's been raging for almost an entire year. >> reporter: the u.s. is now halfway to president biden's goal of 100 million 00 days. tracie potts, nbc news. to the pandemic, new covid cases across the state still trending lower, close to 9,000 reported yesterday.

that's the more than 80% below the mid-december peak. sadly another 408 deaths were reported. california's total since the start of the pandemic is nearing 47,000. and in a month, more people will be eligible to receive the covid-19 vaccine. as of march 15th, another 5 million or so will qualify. state health leaders are announcing on friday that anyone between the ages of 16 and 64, who are pregnant, has a developmental disability, cancer, severe obesity, certain heart conditions or any other conditions putting them at greater risk will receive priority. taking a live look in los angeles, just like the bay area, frustrations have been mounting there due to the shortage in covid vaccines. mass sites have been at a standstill. dodger's stadium will remain closed at least through today. the focus in l.a. is almost entirely on second doses for people who received their first shots weeks ago. one man who helped his elderly parents get their shots says

he's not sure they would have navigated the process without him. >> i can't imagine for other people who now have to wait longer, what if they get infected within that period of time. it's really, that's really scary, so i really feel for those people. j here >> here's how bad it's been. the "l.a. times" reports the city received about one-fifth the number of vaccines it received during the week prior. starting this week, santa clara county will start using saliva tests at more pop-up covid testing sites. until now you likely would have received a nasal swab but saliva tests are considered easier and quicker. the new test was piloted last week at the emmanuel baptist church testing site in san jose. the south county annex in gilroy will ssaliva test starting on wednesday. the campus covid lockdown at uc berkeley will end at midnight tonight. students living in residents halls will no longer have to remain in their rooms. they'll be able to leave for recreation or exercise between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00

p.m. the students in isolation or quarantine will have to remain indoors for the remainder of the lockdowns. the school is starting to see a drop in covid cases. the jai on ferris wheel is looking to keep the popular attraction but getting pushback from environmental groups and residents who live nearby. the ferris wheel will be remain closed until san francisco is released from the most restrictive covid tier. outside a live look at sfo, this is where, by the way vaccine shots will be given out tomorrow in long-term parking structure for san mateo county residents who qualify but the runways are wet and sore the roadway this is morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the rain we've seen come through the area overnight. how long are we expecting to stick around? >> we're going to see some off and on showers throughout at least the morning and then it

starts to clear out for this afternoon. right now, we're just seeing some mist and drizzle, and it's just enough to have you turning on the windshield wipers and dealing with some of the wet weather as we start out on this monday morning. now we are going to see some clearing today, as we are also watching to see what's happening for the eastern half of the country, dealing with this historic storm as well as the record cold temperatures, but for us, we're in for a mainly dry week with our next chance of rain coming back on friday. i'm tracking all of this and we'll have details coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? >> kari, looking pretty good. lighter commute expected today but watch the speeds even you can go as good as conditions allow. look at the maps a smooth drive, getting toward oakland the update for 580 at golf links where i circled there, tow truck is on scene. watch out, on the right side i think it's out of the lanes but stay over to the left if you can.

it's tax season and the irs started accepting returns on friday. this year may be tricky for some people, if you got a stimulus check that is not taxable, if you got unemployment, it's not taxed by the state, but is taxed by the feds. so some free file software would really help you through this if you choose to go that direction. uniqlo will close its main store at union square in san francisco march 26th, one of several major chains to leave. uniqlo has other locations in san francisco, daly city, san jose and milpitas. the head economist at comerica bank tells the "san francisco business times" he's worried the overall exodus from california will hurt the state economy for years to come and there may be enough people leaving for texas and idaho and interestingly enough tennessee, we may lose some seats in congress. now, robert dai says house prices in california should o r

still low inventory. on friday, the bay area council launched a new program to try to make california's business climate a little bit more friendly in hopes the companies will stay. the markets are closed for the holiday today but will reopen on tuesday, with the dow at new records. i mentioned energy prices higher, that usually helps markets move higher as well. so a little trivia. the nyse is one of the last organizations to call this washington's birthday. when they had the day they never officially named it. >> the more you know. >> exactly. ♪♪ all right, a lot of people also seeing the ads for presidents' day as well some bargains as well. edie bauer, old navy are selling winter clothes up to 50% off, nordstrom offering up to 75% off

big brother archie was born in may of 2019. i'm sure the bookies will now be, will it be a girl, a boy? what will they name it? >> excited for them. >> of course we'll follow everything. >> just follow us. you could follow us for the forecast for you as well, because you're waking up this morning, probably wet roads out there. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the rain coming through our area and kari you said it will stick around for most of the morning? >> yes, so kind of a soggy start for us but most of us getting some mist and drizzle and it's just very fine mist to start out on our monday morning, and not a lot of heavy rain, but we are seeing some spots picking up on some of those showers. a wanted to take you to where you're probably seeing a lot of pictures on social media, some snow coming down in houston and austin, really heavy snow where you see the purple right now in louisiana, and to think tomorrow

is mardi gras, what would have been mardi gras and they're seeing icy conditions, and i-10 shut down as well as the heavy snow moving across parts of the midwest. that coming along with temperatures that are in the teens and single digits. i mean, that is just brutal. dallas is at 7 degrees right now. it is 10 degrees as we take a look at what's happening in arkansas, and then even up to parts of the northeast, really bitterly cold temperatures. so you'll be seeing more about that. meanwhile, we're over here oblivious. i would equate those kind of temperatures moving into the bay area, we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves. so they're seeing some really record cold temperatures and here we are looking at highs in the low 60s. don't call your family and brag today because they'll probably be really mad at you. we're going to see some light showers starting out this morning, and we're going to see it for the most part clearing up, although the clouds will still linger for today and our rain chances for mostly before

noon but then the rest of the day is looking pretty good, once again as we head toward those low 60s, and we'll see for most of us, getting about 0.1 of an inch of rain, not a heavy downpour but it's the last we'll get until we get another storm later in the week that's going to bring the sierra some snow between friday and saturday, looks like we could see at least another foot of snow there, while we're going to see some scattered showers moving in late thursday night into friday, and temperatures for much of the week reaching into the low 60s and it does look like we'll be dry this upcoming weekend. mike, heading out the door this morning, any problems with the commute? >> no, no complaints especially none to our friends in texas, illinois and new york. the roadways with the note with the mist out there, we may have an issue. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, you still have that sheen on the roadway, but you can see plenty of the roadway, watch, as these cars us, right behind the cars

welcome back. california's new unified statewide system for the covid-19 vaccine is rolling out to more and more counties. when you are eligible, that's where you'll make an appointment. consumer investigator chris chmura is going to show us how. ♪♪ >> you have two choices to make a covid-19 vaccine appointment through the state. you can go online or call. if you choose the phone, dial 833-422-4255. if you want to to it online, go to myturn.ca.gov. first, pick your preferred language. next, certify that you're an adult and give consent. after that, select what county you live in, add your age and if you work, share what kind of job you do. that matters because some essential workers get priority over others.

when you click continue, it will tell you if you're eligible and if there are any local vaccine appointments. if not, you'll see this page, if you're eligible you'll see this page and begin the process of booking an appointment.ddress or zip code. after you type in an address or zip code, you'll get a list of vaccination sites. when you find a place that works for you, click the blue button to find out when appointments are available. from there, you'll use a calendar to pick a day and complete your registration. if you have trouble booking an appointment, you can call the phone number we mentioned in the beginning. the state says it's open monday through friday from 8:00 to 8:00 and 8:00 to 5:00 on weekends. our changemaker series continues this morning with a focus on faith and colonial williamsburg, virginia, black history is in the process of being unearthed. archaeologists there are excavating one of the country's oldest black baptist churches. this morning craig melvin shares the history of the church whose congregation was founded by those enslaved and freed blacks.

we spoke with him about the descendants of that church and why the excavation of the church is so important to them. worship at this church now are being involved in the process, the excavation process, they're sifting through the sand. they're helping the archaeologists there on site so they're literally bringing their history to life before their eyes. >> and you can watch that entire story that's coming up for you this morning on the "today" show. it's certainly going to be one to watch. i think it's so cool to be able to trace back history and just unearth it literally. >> yes. and share the stories, too. the vaccine shortage sadly boy is hitting close to home. up next, the bay area sites now closing because they don't have the supply. plus, the push to recall governor newsom seemingly turning a new corner. why california's leaders may be thinking differently about the campaign against him. and the snow has been coming

san francisco closing its largest vax nation site today, and that's not the only place the city is running low. we've got a live report straight ahead. as the third hour of "today in the bay" continues right now. a very good monday morning to you. presidents' day as well. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. kris sanchez is live at levi's stadium this morning. levi's has vaccines for now but not necessarily the case in san francisco. >> reporter: yes. i'm at the santa clara county fairgrounds because i wanted to tell you what happened here over the weekend. the county had to give away some doses because they were going to expire because people had appointments and just didn't bother to show up. so about 300 of those doses thawed out and set aside for health care workers and those 65 and older were going to expire, the county notified anyone over 65 and notified any county

worker who could show up, the good news no dose was wasted. san francisco has delivered more than 151,000 doses, nearly half of the over 65 population has at least one shot, but now mass vaccination site at the moscone center has to shut down until at least february 22nd because the health department isn't getting enough doses. the city college site will reopen friday but just for second doses. the head of san francisco's emergency management echoed mayor london breed's frustration. >> we got hit this week with a very low allocation meaning that we can't continue operations. >> today marin county will start vaccinating residents 65 and up. the bad news is the county is already warning people they're facing vaccine shortages, too, and it could take a while to get an appointment. tomorrow the mass vaccination site at the oakland coliseum

will open up with the goal of vaccinating 6,000 people a day. that site is a partnership with the federal government. you might be wondering how is it some sites are shutting down because they don't have enough vaccines, some sites are starting to ramp up and open up, because the supply for the coliseum site is separate, coming separately from the doses that are allocated to the state and then down to our county levels, so they are in addition to. we'll see how that plays out but hopefully the supply chain will improve in the coming days so everybody who wants a shot can get one. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> we're on a roll and came to a stop. got to get it going again. here is a closer look how california is doing distributing the vaccines. according to new data from the state health department california received more than 8 million of those doses, some of them are still being shipped and

about 75% of them, talking about just under 6 million there have actually been administered, a little more than half of all vaccine recipients are seniors 65 and older. people 18 to 49 are second followed by people 50 to 64. of course most of the people in those groups are front line workers. ac transit is joining the effort offering free shuttle service to the coliseum for those getting the vaccine. riders just need to show proof of an appointment, that service starts tomorrow. we know there's a lot to keep track of with this. so to cut through some of the confusion, nbc launched a new website called planyourvaccine.com. it tells you how, where, and when to get your covid vaccine and interactive map to show you the closest vaccination sites. just go to planyourvaccine.com. the l.a. police department launching an internal investigation after allegations officers shared a valentine's day image that mocked the death of george floyd. the photo was attached with the caption that read "you take my breath away." according to the "l.a. times" an

officer filed a complaint about the image and will be interviewed by officials today. the department will also be looking into whether the image was created by a police employee. the police chief told "the times" the claims were substantiated. in a tweet, the department said in part it will have zero tolerance for this type of behavior. as the push to recall governor gavin newsom seems to turn the corner, campaigners are getting a financial boost. the state republican party over the weekend gave the campaign $125,000. organizers recently said that they've already gathered the minimum number of signatures to qualify the measure, with four weeks to go to submit them. but those signatures must still be verified. recent polls have suggested somewhere around 35% of californians would vote to recall newsom. now to a live look in tahoe g,here we're seeing some showers here in the bay area. okay, nevermind, we're not going to show you that right now. take my word for it. i actually snuck up, i headed out on friday morning and just

to get some fresh air out there and yeah, the snow was coming down on saturday but at least i had my window to come back to work yesterday, kari, to drive back down. >> yes. >> is it going to continue up there as we're seeing rain here? >> i just saw the video. >> yes, we tweeted it out. >> we're going to get rain here and winter weather advisories throughout the morning. it was cool to see what it looked like there and still looks like as the snow continues for some of those upper elevations. here in the bay area, we're seeing some light rain this morning. of course, we've been talking about what's happening here, as well as the big snowstorm that's moving across the south right now. all this purple is heavy snow and the pink shows where there's a wintry mix and they're seeing that along the coast in louisiana and some of those areas across the south that are not used to dealing with some winter weather. that coming along with

we've detailed it in the past some of the possible accusations that he may have to face ahead in the future, related to his taxes and accusations from women, and several republicans hoping to end the impeachment trial said perhaps he should be tried in criminal court for the attack on the capitol instead. but in the trial, where democrats were hoping to convict him, they did not, though in the final vote, seven republicans voted to convict, six more than in the first trial, and the most senators to vote to convict a member of their own party in all of american history. >> instead of preventing a dangerous situation, president trump created one. >> our constitution and our country is more important than any one person. i voted to convict president trump because he is guilty.eade mcconnell said trump was guilty as well, after he voted to acquit the former president.

we are recognizing those changemakers and give you a peek into their world. >> "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live to introduce us to this week's changemaker. >> reporter: good morning. sakima williams is an educator, out of oakland, and he spends his time uplifting and encouraging and empowering black boys not only in the classroom but for hours outside of the classroom as well. take a listen to his story. >> it is very difficult as a young black boy to create the roadmap yourself. >> reporter: it took a trauma filled educational experience for a student for this area educator to realize he could do better. >> at schools where the administrative staff and the deans didn't understand young black boys so i spent a lot of time being suspended from schools. >> reporter: and that drive to provide a better experience led sakima williams, better known as mr. kimo, to open the eyes as well as the hearts of students at claremont middle school as an

art and design teacher. >> so those really cool discussions that we had when i was in college is what i brought into the classroom and lo and behold, seventh graders can have collegiate level debate. >> reporter: the work doesn't end in the classroom. for years, mr. kimo also worked with african-american male achievement, an afterschool program started in oakland focused on black males in the district. >> i can't overstate the importance of a strong, positive black role model or figure in your life. >> reporter: the program aims to provide academic support, increase educational engagement and close the achievement gap. mr. kimo through song, conversation and encouragement is there every step of the way to make sure his students, a group of kings, finds success in the classroom and beyond. >> we have an obligation as black men to go back into our community and help shepherd these brothers along who don't have that figure in their life.

it's pretty nice in california. how are we looking today, kari? >> i'm using the rain emoji toda cloud emoji later today, as we are looking at some light showers coming through. we are tracking it on storm ranger, and you can get storm ranger, too, if you have the nbc bay area app. you can see what's going on, but take a look at the clouds that we're seeing over the south bay, it is a cloudy start and i think these clouds will linger for much of today. even though the rain will start to taper off, and we're looking at temperatures today reaching up to about 60 degrees, so it's still going to be nice for getting outside, looking at some upper 50s and low 60s across the bay area, reaching 60 degrees today in martinez, and san francisco reaching 59 degrees. so we are going to have some rain throughout the morning, off and on showers, but then look at what happens as we go into the afternoon. the rain moves out, but then the clouds are still going to linger and then it will gradually clear

out later tonight. we are pretty much dry for much of the rest of the week, so this is our last chance to get some water on the lawn before we go back into some dry weather, but it doesn't look like much water. only up to about 0.1 of an inch of rain for today. as we go into the next couple of weeks our outlook shows that we will have some below average temperatures across the region, as well as some near average rainfall, so that's some good news. it won't be completely dry but not looking that good for southern california, that we'll have much drier conditions going into the next couple of weeks. here we're looking at some mild weather, temperatures that will warm up just slightly once that rain moves out. we'll reach into the mid-60s, but then we will be watching out for more rain coming in early on friday. mike, you've been watching the commute. what's going on right now? >> i've also been watching you guys talk about emojis and i'm so old i use the semicolon and

welcome back. here is a quick look at our top stories we're following including a new development overnight in what's already been a violent bay area weekend. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us in antioch, scene of a deadly late night shooting. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. police have since left. they left about an hour and a half ago but the shooting took

place in front of this house here at ennia way and putnam, not far from the shooting that happened around 10:30 last night, two men were shot, one man was shot and killed, he was sitting inside an suv in front of this home when the police arrived, they did perform first aid, they called an ambulance but he did die on the scene. he was 47 years old, from antioch. a second man, 37 years old, also from antioch, was shot, taken into surgery, is expected to survive. police haven't indicated what led up to this shooting, and they still have not been able to find out who the suspects are. they have made no arrests. yesterday morning around 2:00, 2:00 a.m., three men were shot at turk and hyde, one in life-threatening injuries. sfpd is indicating whether that shooting happened 6:00 saturday night when six people were shot near third street in the bay

area district. their conditions unknown but sfpd has been moving officers from other parts of the city to help stop the violence in the bay view. reporting live in antioch, bob redell, "today in the bay." switching gears right now, taking a live look outside up in the sierra, a live look at tahoe where they saw a lot of snow come down. this is i-80 at donner lake. we got the rain here so that was the snow up in the sierra. chp is warning drivers to make sure that you're prepared, if you're heading up the pass. i actually headed up the pass on friday, took that window of opportunity when it was clear to head up to the tahoe area and saturday morning i made it in the knick of time because it was really coming down, a lot of snow flurries up in the area. clearing at about noon on saturday so the out and play a little bit and make the trip on back down on sunday morning so i could be back here on monday morning. >> and here we are, all together
