"today in the bay" starts now. >> it's friday morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. of course we'll talk about that commute in a bit with mike but first, let's talk about that friday forecast for you. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that. >> good morning. we're starting out with some wet weather moving across parts of the bay area. storm ranger tracking those showers, passing out of the north bay into san francisco, down the peninsula, and extending toward the east bay with a closer look, we can see that it's mostly light rain, but it may have you dealing with some of those wet roads as you get ready to head out the door. mike, hopefully the commute is looking smooth this early in the morning. >> it is looking smooth this early in the morning but as we look through the, well what you're talking about at the bay bridge toll plaza, there's water

on the lens so that may be a factor, make sure those windshield wipers are in good order. you see slicker roadways. as well. it's a smooth drive, green sensors and as well as around the rest of the bay. we'll watch as things develop. back to you. >> thank you very much. a controversial hot mic raising a lot of eyebrows this morning in east contra costa county. . >> the oakley school board president stepped down and calls for the rest of the board to step down as well. here's "today in the bay's" ian cull. >> reporter: the oakley school board facing backlash following wednesday's online meeting they didn't know was being streamed live to the public, it was then posted to youtube. the board president said parents want kids back in class for the child care. >> it's really unfortunate. they want their babysitters back. >> reporter: another cursed as she talked about responding to criticism on social media. >> are we alone? >> yes. >> okay, [ bleep ] if you're

going to call me out i'm going to [ bleep ] you up. >> my heart rate went sky high. i couldn't believe that the comments they were making. >> reporter: parents tell us they thought it was unprofessional and offensive. one started an online petition demanding the school board members resign or face a recall. it has more than 3,500 signatures. >> it makes you understand why there's no preparation demean communication. because they're not taking that seriously. >> reporter: eventually the board realized their conversation wasn't private. >> oh, we have the meeting open to the public right now. >> nuh-uh. >> that's what lori just said. >> great. >> reporter: they publicly apologized at the end. the school board president has resigned. her profile taken off the district site. the superintendent sent out a statement to parents. >> i will not make ex-truces for what happened or why it happened. i am the superintendent, i am responsible and accountable and i'm truly sorry for what took place. >> reporter: still, many parents

say it's time for new leadership, some planning a protest at oakley city hall this saturday. ian cull, "today in the bay." 4:33. if you've been waiting to get the covid vaccine this might be your shot. more counties are expanding vaccine eligibility and in contra costa county teachers are on the list, the move comes after the debate after reopening of schools intensifies. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd has more. >> reporter: johann somerville teaches at san ramon's doherty high school. he's elated that his number has finally been called to get the covid-19 vaccine. >> there's nothing more that we've been waiting for, since march 13th of last year. >> reporter: somerville is scheduled to get his shot on saturday, less than 48 hours after contra costa county health gave educators the green light to make appointment. >> to have this vaccine that's readily available or soon to be readily available to the

teaching masses is phenomenal. >> reporter: it paves the way for the 16,000 school employees to get protection against the deadly virus, but will they be vaccinated before returning to the classroom? dr. anthony fauci addressed the issue. after the white house and the cdc says teachers don't need a vaccine to return to work safely. >> i think to say that you're not going to open up schools until every single one of the teachers get vaccinated, namely making it a sine qua non of opening, i don't think we can go there. otherwise it will be difficult to get the schools open. >> reporter: san ramon valley unified school district started the process last week. carrie lee pike is a high school teacher so still holding class remotely. she got her vaccination because she has a preexisting condition. >> i hope that everybody is really talking the precautions we are committing to taking and

i hope that there's some semblance of normal but i know it's going to be so different. >> reporter: different until the supply allows everyone to get the vaccine. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." san francisco schools under new fire for their reopening plan. "the chronicle" reports city attorney dennis herrera is threatening new legal action with unions requiring full vaccinations. he says schools can and should open immediately based on health guidelines. san francisco parents staged a zoom-in protest yet meant as a message to schools, they laid out blankets, set up small desks at the midtown terrance playground so show how isolated online learning can be. happening now the slow-moving winter disaster that pummeled texas with snow and ice taking aim at the northeast. a live look at dallas and houston, thousands remain without power and the lone star

state, 7 million people are also under a boil water notice. it is likely that won't be lifted until monday. many lining up outside of stores that remain open with power to try to stock up on some of those supplies. and texas senator ted cruz on damage control, after flying back from cancun. cruz returned to houston after being caught boarding a plane, initially the senator said that he was dropping off his daughters in mexico for a trip with their friends. last nights on fox news, he clarified even further. >> i had initially planned to stay through the weekend and to work remotely there but as i was heading down there, you know, i started to have second thoughts. >> the senator adds what's happening in texas is unacceptable, and is demanding answers on why the power grid is failing durin the storm. >> i'm sure we'd all like to jet over to mexico. no matter where you are before, those people are having a tough go of it now. i have some friends who live there and they're freezing.

>> it's tough out there. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that storm that is moving towards the east. kari, how long, is this storm very slow-moving, is it going to stick around in some places a lot longer, dumping more snow? how is it looking? >> well the snow has moved out. it's just the cold that's really causing a lot of problems. my sister-in-law is a fedex driver in san antonio and the roads were just completely iced over, and yes, she was still having to work and we look at the temperatures in dallas, it is 16 degrees this morning, and so all of this cold air has not moved all week long, since sunday, and it's going to take a few more days before it starts to warm up there and other areas that have been really cold. at least it's fairly mild here. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? >> it's looking pretty good on the commute over here in the south bay. as we look out to the south bay, let's take a look at the traffic flowing northbound 101. we do have a tis abled vehicle

good friday morning. a live look in downtown san jose, as we get started with the day. get the kick-start on the weekend for you. 4:48 and we are going to kickoff with a nice day. meteorologist kari hall has been telling us -- laura's got the claps going. because we're set to have a really nice weekend but we've got to get this rain, this early morning rain out of the way, right, kari? >> yes, so rain while most people aren't making outdoor plans, so we are going to see some scattered showers moving through and a lot of it has been very light. as we look at storm ranger it's showing us exactly where those

showers are coming down in parts of roarin pounty taking a break in san francisco, parts of the east bay we've seen it through union city and fremont. don't expect a lot of rain in san jose. a lot of times we don't get the higher rainfall totals. here we are at 3:30 this afternoon. if shows clouds but another round of rain coming in early tomorrow morning. i'm going to stop it right here at 1:30 tomorrow morning. we see some hitter miss showers in parts of the north bay and then it moves into the east bay peninsula, south bay by about 3:00 to 4:00 tomorrow morning and then the rest of the by is nice, so we can make plans to get outside. it's going to be a little bit cooler but at least we have nice

weather and looking at how much rain in all between these two rain chances up to about a quarter inch of rain and then for the sierra, some light snow coming down to about 5 to 8 inches of snow over the next couple of days, and then some dry weather headed our way. and i'm watching that dry weather because with the update of the drought monitor, we are still in an extreme drought for parts of the north bay. while the rest of the bay area continues to be in a severe drought. we'll talk about rain chances ahead in the forecast. mike what's going on right now the commute? >> well, we're looking at the opposite of a drought on the roadways. that's the turned conditions. the bay bridge toll plaza scholes the rain on the lens and the roadway that will be the case as we look at the map. no delay as far as speed sensors go. you want to slow the speeds a little bit across this map and across the bay because of the slicker conditions. as we look at the green sensors

a little change for the altamont. the san mateo bridge may have gotten rain as well. the water is kicking up, cars coming toward us in the eastbound direction. back to you. >> thank you so much, mike. it's 4:50 right now. the new leader of the troubled employment development department trying to chart a future free of fraud. rita sans yesterday held a conference call to outline some of the steps being taken to turn the agency around. among them reportedly hiring the 00 new call staff members to better handle the flood of accounts. also stopping fraud before it even enters the system, with better stop gaps. the agency handed out somewhere north of $10 billion last year to people who filed bogus claims. san diego county is reporting its first covid case in a person who was fully vaccinated. the person is a health care worker but public health officials don't want this case to scare people. they say the vaccines are about 95% effective in preventing covid-19 so there is the
