this morning, varying reports of fatalities. iran's state broadcaster saying 17, quote, resistance fighters were killed. meanwhile, a monitoring group saying the fatalities are 22, and the trucks carrying weapons were destroyed. in retaliation for a series of recent rocket attacks in iraq, including one last week which killed a u.s. contractor and wounded six, including an american service member. the air strikes on syria's border with iraq targeted facilities by the iranian-backed militia responsible, according to president biden's new secretary of defense. >> we know what we did. we're confident that target was being used by the same shia militia that conducted the strikes. >> reporter: it's president biden's first known military action since taking office. the air strikes were ordered by the president in the morning and carried out by the evening.

the militia targeted including kata'ib. hezbollah, the u.s. says. the group, calling itself the guardians of blood brigade, had claimed responsibility for last week's attack. days later, another attack in iraq's green zone appeared to target the u.s. embassy in baghdad. iran has denied any links to the group, but the air strikes could complicate the biden administration's efforts to return to a nuclear deal with iran. >> we encouraged the iraqis to investigate and develop intelligence, and that was helpful to us in refining the target. >> reporter: it is a proportionate response, the pentagon says, sending an unambiguous message. president biden will act to protect american personnel. and delicate diplomacy will have been involved. a limited strike inside syria to avoid a backlash from iraq, while sending a message to iran. russia says it was given several

minutes of warning, savannah. >> keir, thank you. we want to bring in chief white house correspondent kristen welker. what more do you know about the thinking and the strategy behind these strikes? >> reporter: savannah, i spoke with a senior administration official overnight who said the administration wanted to send a strong message to iran. attacks like those last week against american assets will not be tolerated, as keir said. this official also stressed, this was proportionate and targeted, which basically means it was aimed at avoiding escalation. now, the biden administration, based on my conversations, tried to show it can do multiple things at once, both engage in diplomacy over the iran nuclear talks, again, they want to restart the talks, while also showing strength. when i pressed this official over whether there were more attacks were planned, this person said, look, that'd be dependent on circumstances in the region, potential response. not going to delve into strategy, but that for now, they're not tracking imminent action in the near term, savannah. >> you mentioned this dicey moment in the talks over the iran nuclear deal.

this has to complicate that. >> reporter: that's definitely a concern, savannah. no doubt about that. the u.s. recently said it was open to restarting the talks with iran over its nuclear program. of course, that process is already incredibly fragile, as we've been reporting on for days. iran hasn't agreed to restart talks. you have a number of lynn lawmakers who are saying they're opposed to trying to reenter the iran nuclear deal. for context, to remind everyone, former president trump pulled the u.s. out of the nuclear deal, saying it wasn't tough enough. since then, iran resumed its enrichment of uranium. for his part, president biden plans to travel to texas today to focus on his domestic policy, to visit the state after frigid temperatures left millions without power and clean water. the trip, of course, is also a chance for reporters to ask him about all of this, savannah. >> kristen welker at the white house, thank you. meantime, there is a big day ahead in the fight against the coronavirus and the effort to vaccinate more americans.

today, the fda's advisory panel formally reviews and votes on whether to approve johnson & johnson's single dose vaccine for emergency use, potentially giving the country a third option. tom costello joins us from baltimore, at a facility where the vaccine is actually being manufactured. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. we are at emergent biosolutions. behind me, these folks have been working and are working right now on the critical elements of the vaccine. it then comes out of here in frozen form. goes to a facility where it's added to the vials in liquid form and it's shipped out. the folks are waiting for the looming and eminent fda's decision. workers are preparing the ingredients for another covid-19 vaccine, the third. this one for johnson & johnson. facing formal evaluation today from the fda's independent outside advisory panel on whether to approve the vaccine

for emergency use. once approved, j&j hopes to ship millions of doses within days. you guys are running 24/7, right? >> we are and have been for a while. >> reporter: sean kirk is in charge of manufacturing and technical operations at emergent biosolutions, which partners with manufacturing facilities to fill vaccine vials on a massive scale. his team has been working sense last summer to ramp up production. >> we purify out the viral vectors, which are the active part of the vaccine. we freeze it down, ship it out of here, and it's filled into the viles that patients are accustom to receiving or seeing when they get a vaccine shot. >> reporter: at the white house thursday, president biden marked 50 million vaccines administered since he took office. halfway to his goal of 100 million doses in the first 100 days. still cautioning, people must remain vigilant. >> this is not a victory lap. everything is not fixed. we have a long way to go. that day, when everything is back to normal, depends on us. >> reporter: as the biden

preparing for that to be distributed once the fda approves it. hoda? >> back to the pfizer vaccine a second. the thing about that one, it had to be kept in a deep freeze for it to keep and do well. now, the fda is saying that's actually not the case? >> reporter: yeah. the fda is now telling pfizer, you don't have to keep it at negative 80 degrees fahrenheit, which was a challenge for rural parts of the country that don't have those types of freezers. now, the fda says you can keep it in a regular fridge or freezer, i should say, for two weeks, and it will remain viable. that's a big benefit for those parts of the country that don't have access to those deep, arctic cold freezers. >> tom, thank you. we'll have a lot more on the vaccine push in our next half hour, including an exclusive interview with walmart's ceo. also today, the biden administration's nearly $2 trillion covid relief package faces its first full house vote. in a blow to the democrats, the

bill's proposed minimum wage increase will not be included in the package. nbc's capitol hill correspondent kasie hunt joins us. walk us through what happened with the minimum wage piece of it. >> of course. good morning, savannah. raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 an hour, it was one of president biden's key campaign promises. but he's not going to be able to deliver on that promise quite yet, and it comes after a senate official ruled that raising the minimum wage can't be part of this massive covid relief package that congress is debating right now. the senate parliamentarian says it doesn't meet the complex requirements that would allow democrats to raise the wage without republican support. getting this done has been a huge priority for progressive democrats. they argue it'd lift so many people out of poverty. but this decision means that it's much less likely the minimum wage will go up any time soon. that's because democrats only control 50 seats in the senate, and now they'd need 60 votes to do it.

many republicans are opposed to it. they point to a cbo report that says raising the wage to $15 could cost 1.4 million jobs, savannah. >> so that's the minimum wage piece of the package. there's still the larger covid relief bill, including district payments to people. what's the status of that? >> they're racing to get this done by march 14th. that, of course, is this critical date when unemployment insurance benefits will expire for so many people. it's a really tough deadline on their calendars. now, the house is going to pass their version of this bill today. that's the first step. that is going to include the minimum wage increase. but, of course, it's then got to go to the senate, where we're going to have more back and forth. again, they're trying to get this all wrapped up early next month, savannah. >> kasie, you'll be on it on the hill. thank you very much. appreciate it. now, we're going to move to the latest on tiger woods' crash and his recovery. craig just back from california with the latest details on this. good morning.

good morning to you, as well. was moved to a different hospital in los angeles. he'll continue his treatment there. this morning, we're hearing directly from the first responders who actually rescued woods from that wrecked suv. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is at cedars-sinai medical center for us. good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. tiger woods is now being treated here at cedars-sinai hospital. he is moved here after investigators say they he had a horrific crash, they were able to pull him from that wreckage in what's described as an unbelievable scene. >> looks like a very violent accident. >> reporter: when rescue teams reached the devastating wreck, every minute mattered. >> we all knew he was in pain. we had multiple people in there talking to him, saying, "hey, tiger, it's going to be okay."r captain jean barrett was one of the first on scene. her job, coordinating the rescue of the legendary golfer. the mission took her team of ten

12 minutes. the force of the crash so intense, it pushed the engine and steering wheel into the driver's seat, pinning woods. his legs trapped in the mangled metal. >> he was able to have wiggled his legs out from under the steering wheel, but he was still entangled. he could not get himself out on his own. >> reporter: barrett's crew used this ax to pry open the windshield and peel it back. >> you can actually see where it was in contact with the glass. >> reporter: remarkably, woods, whose shattered right leg is now held together by a rod, screws, and pins, was able to assist. >> he wanted out. he was actually moving his arms, and he was helping us get him out. >> reporter: even with those broken legs? >> yes. >> reporter: he was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. doctors even having to cut open his leg to relieve pressure from swelling, which could point to a condition called compartment syndrome. if not treated quickly, the ailment may cause permanent nerve damage and can even lead

to amputation. >> at this point, he probably still has a fair amount of swelling in his leg. the incision that was used for the compartment syndrome has probably not been closed yet. >> reporter: woods is now being treated at cedars-sinai, as investigators, who say the golfer has no recollection of the accident, turned their attention to the suv's black box, which is expected to provide a critical snapshot of velocity, braking, lane drifting, and eye movement. it could help determine if woods was speeding or distracted seconds before impact. the suv that tiger woods was driving also has infrared system that may have been tracking his eyes. that could provide vital clues into the crash but the good news here, tiger woods is being is, in fact, going well we are told. back to you in nweather and a l

live within a quick drive of a the company now could end up playing a key role in making sure covid vaccines reach all americans. >> nbc's stephanie gosk spoke exclusively to the company's ceo. steph, good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda good morning you're absolutely right, craig 90% of americans live within 10 miles of a walmart, according to the company. many of those stores have pharmacies capable of giving out the covid vaccine. some have started, but according to ceo john furner, they're ready to do a lot more 13 million that's how many people walmart is capable of vaccinating a month, according to u.s. president and ceo john furner. the nation's largest retailer isn't quite there yet, but they are ramping up you are in 35 states, over 1,400 stores are you getting the supply that you need to operate in all those places >> the supply is getting better. i think we can do up to 13

million doses a month. we've already given about 500,000 just in the last few weeks. we think we can get to a really big number. >> reporter: you've said that you're focusing on underserviced areas. what does that mean? how do you select those areas? >> in 5,000 communities with a facility of some type, so our team, along with the cdc, they've been looking at all sorts of data. we have a supply chain and a team of people who are in a lot of places in the country where there may not be other options for them to get a vaccine. we can play an important role for communities that may not have an easy path to find someone that can help them get a vaccine administered. >> reporter: for a lot of people, john, trying to get an appointment for a vaccine has been a nightmare, to say the least. how can you keep walmart from being another place on the list where there are supposed to be appointments but no one can seem to get them? >> yeah, great question. i'm really proud of our -- we have a product management and

technology team. they've been working around the clock for weeks to get a scheduling system built, put together, and they did this in a way that's really user friendly. so you can sign up at walmart.com or go in the app, provided you're eligible if there is supply and we've got the ability to get you the shot, we'll get it set up and do that. >> reporter: is walmart doing anything to address some of the doubts or questions that people might have still about this vaccine, to convince them to take part in the program >> we've been educating our own associates and using media channels to explain the benefits of vaccines. we also think that it is important that you know that friends or family or peers or others that have gotten the vaccine are open about it. my intention is to get the vaccine when it's my turn. it is not my turn yet. when it is my turn, i intend to do so. >> reporter: how about among your employees, are they getting vaccinated they're on the front lines as much as anyone else these days >> we hope they do we're encouraging them to do that

we're back. carson joins us. we've got more now on that stunning crime, and it was caught on camera. it happened in los angeles. >> absolutely shocking. it is making worldwide headlines. lady gaga's dog walker ambushed. two of her dogs stolen. investigators and joins us this morning with the story. hey, steve. >> reporter: craig, good morning. detectives with the lapd say they're actively pursuing leads in the search for the attackers, but so far have not id any suspects. part of their investigation will likely focus on a doorbell video obtained by tmz that captures part of the shooting. we want to warn you right away, the video is graphic, and some might find it disturbing. [ screaming ] >> reporter: seconds of pure terror captured on a hollywood home's doorbell camera. the video obtained by tmz, shows the moment lady gaga's dog walker was assaulted, shot, and robbed of two of the superstar's three french bulldogs.

the confrontation pierced by a gunshot and pleas for help. tmz freezing the video. during the moment of impact. >> i've been shot! >> reporter: the man, trying to fend off two suspects before they sped away in this white vehicle. following the shooting and dog abduction. >> male, conscious and breathing. approximately 35 years of age, suffering from a gunshot wound. >> reporter: police say the victim was walking lady gaga's dogs shortly before 10:00 thursday night when he was targeted. two of the dogs, koji and gustav, were taken, while a third, miss asia, ran away and was later recovered by police. >> it happened so fast, 30 seconds. looked over my fence, saw the two cars, heard the gunshot, i went back in the house and called 911. >> reporter: while police haven't identified the victim, family members confirming to knbc overnight the dog walker was ryan fischer, seen frequently with lady gaga's dogs on social media. he is expected to survive. sources say he is recovering well.

"weekend today" co-host and chief white house correspondent kristen welker has more on the targets and message the president is trying to send. good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning to you. according to iranian state tv, 17 fighters were killed in those air strikes overnight. according to administration officials, president biden ordered those attacks in

retaliation after there were rockets fired into iraq, which killed one contractor and injured seven others last week there have been a number of these types of attacks the administration aiming to send a message, that these attacks will not be tolerated. the president's defense secretary weighing in overnight. take a listen. >> the target we went after, we know what we did we're confident that that target was being used by the same shia militia that conducted the strikes. >> reporter: now, these air strikes overnight come at a very risky time for president biden's foreign policy he has signalled a willingness to restart talks with iran over its nuclear program. republicans have expressed opposition to that, saying that the initial nuclear deal with iran was just not tough enough so there will be a lot of focus on that moving forward could these air strikes make an already fragile situation even more perilous?

for his part, president biden will be traveling to texas a little bit later on today. he's going to be touring the damage in the wake of those storms that knocked out power and clean water to millions there. savannah >> kristen welker, thank you there are new developments tied to the scandal that's rocked the sport of gymnastics a former u.s. gymnastics coach with ties to disgraced doctor larry nassar taking his own life just hours after being charged with the slew of disturbing crimes, including human trafficking. nbc's anne thompson has that story. >> reporter: john geddert's body was found at this michigan highway rest hour in michigan, hours after two dozen criminal charges were filed against him in 2012, he coached the fierce five to gold medal glory at the london olympics. but how he coached, and his ties to larry nassar convicted of sexually abusing young female gymnasts, led to the charges against geddert. >> it is alleged that john geddert used force, fraud, and

coercion against the young athletes that came to him. >> reporter: geddert was accused of human trafficking racketeering, assault, and lying to investigators about nassar. >> john made larry possible and larry made john possible >> reporter: before learning o geddert's deather he was described as physically and emotionally abusive, and said he had to know about nassar's sexual abuse at geddert's gym. >> he saw a small child alone naked with a grown man time after time after time. >> did he ever ask you about that, what was going on in that back room? >> never >> reporter: in the past, geddert said he had zero knowledge of nassar's crimes but in 2018, olympic gold medalist aly raisman told savannah about a ride she took with geddert and teammate kayla maroney.

>> what did she say? >> she described in graphic detail what nassar did the night before i remember john g ddert was in the car and just said nothing. >> reporter: overnight raisman tweeted, why is there still no independent investigation? klein called his suicide an escape from justice. >> people who allowed john geddert to abuse us, and the people who allowed larry nassar to abuse us need to be held to account. >> reporter: that includes usa gymnastics, which this morning said it hoped the criminal charges would lead to justice. its thoughts are with the gymnastics community now trying to make sense of the stunning events. for "today," anne thompson, nbc news >> aly raisman also tweeted this, as a minor on the national team, i frequently had to travel without my parents under the supervision of usa gymnastics. the, quote, responsible adults including john geddert, marvin sharpe, steve penny, and larry nassar sharpe was a top gymnastics

coach who also took his own life after being charged in the scandal. and steve penny, he was the former president of usa gymnastics, who was forced to resign those girls all want an independent investigation. they said they have not gotten it yet. >> the fact they're still uncovering this, you know, it's just shocking. meanwhile, this morning, efforts to hike the federal minimum wage as part of president biden's covid relief package, the efforts appear to be doomed. a senate parliamentarian ruled on thursday that a measure mor than doubling the minimum wage to $15 an hour cannot be included because it violates the budget process however, in the private sector, costco announcing thursday it will raise its minimum wage to $16 an hour starting next week. we have the news we need the boost. >> got a boost here we go a toddler who is fascinated by her grandpa's cane started using it herself to imitate the way he she nailed it all the way. take a look.

okay, looks like twins then she's like, well, this sack, there's two. i was like, okay, that's triplets then. she's like, this is another one. he luckily got to go with me, so he was there i started hyperventilating i was like, i need a break she said, well, we need to go back in. i'm pretty sure i saw another one.ught i was being pranked. no way i would have believed that. >> i mean, here's the thing, you had zoe, so you have five kids your 2-year-old zoe, how is she doing with all this? >> she couldn't be happier she is -- i mean, everyone she sees, she's like, i'm a big sister now i'm a big sister i'm like, all right, it's a little shirt it's a big shirt because i'm a big sister >> guys, you were splitting time in the nicu for visitation, and then the storm comes then you lose power. how did you handle that, especially with the nursing?

let's show you what we have got going on as far as your weather. if you're going out for a walk, doing whatever outside, get out there and enjoy it however, it'll be a little on the wet side down through the gulf, into the mid mississippi and ohio river valleys snowy and wet in the pacific northwest. as we look at the temperatures, for this afternoon, 20s as you nice and toasty from southern texas to southern florida. southern california looking good, as well. as far as your weather is concerned, heavy rain coming up through the mid mississippi and ohio river valleys heavy snow in the pacific northwest. sunshine through the great lakes. that's what's going on aro . i'm meteorologist kari hall. we are taking up to chilly temperatures and sunshine, but it will be a very pleasant afternoon, with our inland areas reaching into the upper 60s, low 40s tonight, and the winds pick up especially tomorrow afternoon. into early sunday morning. but temperature-wise no major changes. we'll be watching out for a

their life things like walking to dinner or walking to school or walking to work each of these steps add up it is cumulative throughout the day, the week, and month it has major implications on health throughout your body. >> the good thing about walking is, no matter what your physical capacity is, you can adapt the walking to what you can do. >> that's right. i mean, anybody can walk at any age. i want to make the distinction, walking to get out and walk and walking for exercise. >> i have to watch our social distance. >> sorry about that. so good to see you if you're walking for exercise, you want to think about how much exertion you're doing. we have a perceived exertion scale, effort scale, 1 to 3. we're now in a one just talking. two is, you know, you're breathing heavier. >> what is a good, average pace? >> one to two, meaning you can talk, easy conversation is fine. >> how do you upgrade your walk, if you want to pump it up? >> well, if you want to get more intensity out of the walk, put

in some speed. we can even walk a little faster demo that. >> we don't want to kill our camera guys. >> we can slow down then we can put in some hills we're going downhill now, but uphill is tougher. then you can stop and do things. at a bench, do some squats those things are helpful. >> how does this improve our mental health? >> well, people think about walking for physicality, but for mental health, it's extremely important. the idea of clearing your mind, clearing your brain, reduces anxiety, helps sleep there's mental benefits to walking every day outside. >> one of the things you told me a couple years ago, and i walk -- i watch other new yorkers and probably other people, too, one mistake we make is we over-stride when we walk take big, long steps why is that not great? >> we talked about that years ago. if you overstride you put more loading force on your hips, knees, back. we're after shortening your walking or running stride. >> doctor, thank you so much

local news and weather ♪ rock me mama ♪ good morning, 8:26, i'm marcus washington. governor newsom's office laying out the details of his plan to set aside vaccines each week for teachers to help reopen more schools. the governor announced last week 10% of vaccines each week should go to teachers. so the plan is to dedicate roughly 75,000 doses each week to those teachers. the state will provide the doses directly to county offices of education for distribution. teachers will receive single-use access codes to book those appointments online. the state will also target teachers with drives at two large scale sites including one at oakland coliseum. let's get a look at the

now this is strongly recommended but as long as you're six feet away from people not in your household you won't be violating health orders. cine mark is actually reopening bay area theaters, redwood city, san bruno and san a fell. the reopening, moving into the less restrictive red tier. the theaters with operate at 25% capacity. cierra johnson is in the north bay with a live report. youth and high school students and sports across california are getting the green light to resume outdoors but counties must still meet certain criteria for those games to begin like more of this and want to know more, go to our home page. fda advisers are presenting their findings on johnson & johnson's covid vaccine.
