frustrated, because they can't get an appointment. >> but that could change soon. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us live to explain why. tracie? >> >> the message from the white house is just wait. more vaccine is coming, they've now contracted with another company to try to speed up production and they're earlying up the time line, looks like every adult who wants to get vaccinated will be able to do so before this summer. president bide an announcing the u.s. will have enough vaccine for every adult two months ahead of schedule. >> by the end of may, that's progress. morning important. >> reporter: he's using the defense production act to get johnson & johnson to produce more vaccine and asking states to guarantee at least one shot to every educator by the end of this month.

secretary miguel cor dough in a will travel to connecticut and pennsylvania to visit schools as they begin to reopen, they will visit benjamin franklin elementary schools in meridian, connecticut. a tale of two stories in texas and california. today parts of the bay area are set to enter the red tier, adding indoor dining. however, much of the state is still under strict guidelines. in the meantime, in texas, the governor there lifting the state's mask mandate and allowing all businesses to open at 100% capacity. this morning, we've got live team coverage, first "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live in san francisco with more on today's reopenings. a lot to keep track of, cierra. >> reporter: yes, good morning, after months of waiting, business owner this is morning waking up, being able to put in place those less restrictive

guidelines when they open business because three counties are joining two other bay counties from moving from the purple tier to the less restrictive red tier. plow in san francisco have been on the wave of opening and closing and able to open with indoor dining. what can you expect when you visit a business in the three counties, san francisco, napa county, excuse me, that means gyms, fitness centers can open at 10% capacity. restaurants like this one can open at 25% capacity for indoor dining or 100 people, whichever is fewer and movie theaters can open at 25% or 100 people, whichever is fewer in that situation. museums, zoos and aquariums are now able to open at 25% se conference tuesday and revealed the reopening of a few other attractions that have not been able to open including outdoor recreation like ferris wheels, carousels and amusement park style trains. according to governor gavin

newsom more than a dozen counties are expected to move into the less restrictive tier next week as well. while we caught up with some restaurants here in san francisco who say this is a huge step with one employee saying with the reopening process under way, as well as that vaccine availability, things are really looking up for the food industry. >> we're really optimistic, because all the signs are pointing in a good direction. >> reporter: and it is important to note with the reopening it's not just for businesses, indoor restaurants indoors, it's also for some of the schools, five days after you enter that red tier, schools are legally able to resume that in-person learning, nothing facet of this story we will continue to follow as we move towards that five-day mark in the red tier for those three counties. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, cierra. the south bay isn't only just shifting into the red tier. santa clara county is also lifting its mandatory travel quarantine effective today. now people who live and work in

the county can travel anywhere in the state and won't have to stay home for ten days upon returning. those state guidelines still recommend quarantining after travel. as california allows counties to open, texas and other states are going full throttle ditching mask mandates and guidelines for businesses. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from san jose with the contrast. when i saw what the governor said in texas, i was in shock. >> reporter: >> reporter: i think a lot of folks were shocked. after what happened in texas with the big freeze, seems like anything goes at this point. our counties are slowly moving into the red tiers, five bay area counties in the red tier, and santa clara county only recently eased up on its mask mandate but only for outside and only when you can keep your social distance which i'm doing this morning. that is a big contrast to what is happening in four other states yesterday eliminating

restrictions on indoor dining, bars and other businesses, which is counter to what the head of the cdc is saying we should be doing right now those new more contagious covid variants circulating, and the texas governor as we mentioned took it even further. >> effective next wednesday, all businesses of any type are allowed to open 100%. [ applause ] that includes any type of entity in texas, also i am ending the statewide mask mandate. >> reporter: that is a curiosity for my family in particular. my sister is a teacher. interesting whether they mandate masks in schools at this point. the cdc director says cases are still spreading as you see on the graph, u.s. cases plunged more than 70% over the last two

weeks so we thought we were in good shape but then it drastically kind of leveled out, and in fact in the last couple of days we've seen some caseloads going up just a bit in some places across the nation. the cdc guideline, you should still wear a mask, if you can't keep your social distance keep your gatherings outside. for us here we have a couple more nice days of weather. this weekend might be rough as the rain rolls in. congress now investigating a bay area company allowing people to jump the line for those covid vaccines. we've reported on the san francisco based provider one medical three bay area counties cut off vaccine supplies to one medical after learning the health care provider gave shots to people who were ineligible including associates of the company executives. the house select subcommittee has sent one medical, scathing letter and requesting documents. one medical says it will cooperate fully. now to a developing story in

the east bay. the fbi searching for someone who broke into an agent's car and stole items. itoakland. the fbi says someone broke into a rental car and took protective equipment and other personal items. earlier this month, a gun, law enforcement badge and credentials were stolen from an fbi agent's car on lafayettesirk until lafayette. police arrested two people for stealing the items worth more than $1,000. the man accused of a deadly hit-and-run new year's eve is back in court. troy mcallister was on apa patrol where he ran over two in a crossquack. he was arrested several months leading up to the accident. he has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges including vehicular manslaughter. drivers in san francisco could be permanently cut off from a scenic viewpoint in the

city. sf mta board directors voted to keep the north end of twin peaks boulevard off limits to drivers. the burnett avenue gate to twin peaks would remain open for bicyclists and pedestrians and the potola drive entrance and christmas tree road parking lot will be open to drivers. sf mta leaders say during the pandemic, foot traffic went up drastically and they're trying to make the stretch of the street safe for pedestrians. the towering ferris wheel in golden gate park is set to start giving rides again this week. the new 150-foot sky star observation wheel was only remember for a few weeks before it shut down. the shutdown itself brought it to a halt but it will reopen at noon tomorrow thanks to san francisco's new red tier status that we're talking about. in the meantime, san francisco's historic preservation commission will discuss whether to allow

the wheel to continue spinning in the park until march of 2025. see if it keeps going around. >> do they have a web cam. i would just stare on my computer. >> there you have an opportunity, but then you can go up and around maybe as well. you probably have to make reservations i would think but the weather is certainly cooperating these days, kari. >> yes. it's been so nice out there, and as we head into the weekend, we have a lot of changes ahead. we're talking about some rain, but as of right now, it's dry. it's clear. here is a live look outside in dublin, as a lot of people are heading out for work. that's a look at 580, and our temperatures are in the low 40s. notice the clouds we'll have to start out today but it will still warm up and head into the low 60s and then we'll get some sunshine later on this afternoon. but it will also hold those temperatures down a few degrees from yesterday, as we reach up to 65 today in livermore and 67

one. just not as sunny as yesterday, as we get some high clouds moving in, and temperatures still heading into the upper 60s. a look ahead in our forecast with some rain finally, that's coming up in a few minutes. over my shoulder i have on the map breaking news. they have requested some help over there north of palo alto, 101, the tail lights headed up toward san carlos where the alert is on for the approach toward holly and we'll talk about what are some local landmarks you can depend on as you make that peninsula commute. good morning, very good wednesday to you as well. the head of the fbi says social networking definitely contributed to the violence at the nation's capitol two months ago. fbi director christopher wray said "terrorism moves at the speed of the social network" but warned as more companies move towards encrypted messaging, the fbi will have trouble tracking extremists and terrorists.

has set women back in the workforce. the study is part of women's history week says companies have to work twice as hard to hire women after the pandemic is over in order to close that employment gap. now as marcus and laura we've seen with our own family and friends, women tend to be the ones who take over home schooling and also much more likely to work in service industries which the data shows were hit the hardest by the pandemic. >> a lot of times women are just smarter. thanks, scott. listen to, this a group of women entrepreneurs became a powerful force during the pandemic. it all started with one chicago woman reaching out to other restaurant owners to create ways to keep each other afloat during the pandemic. they created a group called let's talk network, which now has over 350 members from across the nation. you can watch the "today" show this morning to learn how you can help women-owned

vaccine. >> i love now dolly got all dolled up to get her vaccine. ♪ vaccine ♪ >> she said she gets dolled up to go to bed, just in case there's a fire. >> i love it, that's a good attitude. >> no fire in sight, thank you, but there is nice sunshine in store for us today here in the bay area. >> yes, we're enjoying some nice weather here, but we are also starting out with some clouds as some rain heads toward southern california. we're going to miss out on the rain but notice the clouds that are spreading out from that system that's moving to our south. so we're watching that, and we'll get some sunshine later today. so if you're heading out early this morning, going to go for a run in san rafael, temperatures start out in the mid-40s and we'll see some peeks of sunshine, notice there will be some high clouds passing by, and our temperatures still warming up at noon we're at 60 degrees and eventually reaching into the

mid-60s. now, our highs today will be a couple of degrees lower than yesterday because of the morning start with the clouds, but it will still be a pleasant afternoon. feeling comfortable with san jose reaching 68 degrees. 65 intures in the north bay in the upper 60s and low 70s. let's get to the rain, and we'll see several storm systems coming in. the first one bringing us a chance of showers on saturday. sunday is dry, and it looks like the time line of that rain on saturday will be very early in the morning. so probably won't affect a lot of your weekend plans, and then as we look at monday and tuesday, couple of more storm systems passing by. so with the first round of rain, there could be up to three-quarters of an inch of rain in parts of the north bay and south of the golden gate bridge will get a quarter to half inch of rain. when you get the second and third rounds of rain in all we could see over an inch of rain across the bay area, maybe er tr the north bay, while the sierra will get over a foot of snow,

and there could be some spots reaching up to 19 inches, so that's really great to see over the next week. this is the kind of rain we need, where it's kind of spread out and gets a chance to soak into the ground and we don't get it all at once. so looking forward to that this weekend. mike, you've been watching some breaking news. what's the update on that? >> kari, we have two watching now. definitely breaking news on the. he ininess la. we'll start with that. that would be for highway 101, the bay shore freeway northbound is jammed up from about whipple all the way up to just shy of holly and redwood shores, so that is a problem -- redwood mark way and a problem. the fast lane is blocked and crews should arrive any second. i'll say about another half hour until they can clear that so hopefully before 6:00. it will mean good recovery for the peninsula and the rest of the south bay, getting up into san francisco but over here we still have this other alert, breaking news for vacaville westbound 80 at cherry glen. that crash still blocks two of your lanes, a big jam coming

any details on what happened. of course, when they do, we will pass those along to you. this morning, thousands of people are waking up to the bad news that their covid-19 vaccination appointment has been canceled. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live this morning. bob, i understand one major bay area health care provider canceling tens of thousands of these vaccine appointments. tell us why. >> correct. good morning to you, marcus and laura. sutter health tells us it is running out of doses and as a result it's canceling 40,000 vaccine appointments across the system over the next week. it may have to cancel 50,000 more, it says, and this is to answer your question, due to inconsistent supply from the state. all of these appointments by the way are for the second round of shots for patients. we spoke with dave johnson, he got his first shot february 6th, then his second dose this friday was canceled. sutter health told him it will be rescheduled in seven to ten

days. >> it's a real disappointment because you're looking so forward to getting this over with. i understand we can wait a while. we'll see. no information, just they had to cancel it, they don't have the vaccines, they'll get in touch with us. >> sutter health spokesperson points to the cdc's updated guidance, which says the second shot may be extended up to six weeks after the initial dose, but for many patients, they're hoping to get rescheduled soon. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. leaders in san mateo county, they're demanding east palo alto have more access to covid-19 vaccines. state senator josh becker says only about 10% of the city has gotten the covid-19 vaccine. surrounding cities have about 20% of residents vaccinated. one likely reason? there are no daily injection sites in east palo alto and

that's what san mateo county board of supervisors president tells palo alto online. leaders are eyeing a new johnson & johnson vaccine to help vaccinate efforts. officials plan to hold a news conference on the vaccine disparity later today. happening today, farm workers will continue to roll up their sleeves and get a covid shot. the monterey mushrooms facility in morgan hill is open on wednesdays and sundays for workers to get that vaccine. the site opens between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. health leaders hope to vaccinate 1,000 farm workers today. if you're looking for a vaccine, this can happen. help. a website called plan your vaccine. you select your state, occupation and age and the site pulls up the closest vaccination site as you're eligible. just go to planyour yk vaccine.com. a more contagious strain of covid-19 was just detected in sonoma county. a variant discovered in the uk was detected in a county resident after getting the

test at a pharmacy. public health investigators are looking into the person's recent travel history and exposure to others. the infected person and their roommate are both in isolation. new this morning, san francisco may soon require large grocery stores and pharmacies to give hazard pay to its workers. supervisors are considering a proposal that would pay those employees $5 more an hour. those workers would only qualify if they make under $35 an hour. this week, san mateo approved a similar ordinance. similar proposals have been adopted in oakland, berkeley and santa clara county. investigators say officer terrance stangle was responding to a report of a man choking a woman when they confronted dacari spears and his then girlfriend. defense attorneys claim he was defending himself as spears refused to comply with orders

and pushed stangle's partner. body camera footage shows spears was not committing a crimeears and has filed a federal lawsuit against the city now to a follow-up, oakland moving ahead with replacing who responds to some 911 calls. city council unanimously approving a plan that would dispatch counselors and paramedics to mental health emergencies. according to "the chronicle" the plan is a change from the original proposal of contracting with community-based organizations to run the program. city staff will give the progress report on establishing that program later this month. 5:36 right now. a powerful, new tribute to black women in the bay area fighting for social justice. it's all expected to be completed today. it's a 2,000 square foot mural on the side of a home in west oakland showing women of the black panther party. it's taken the artist nearly a

day. we'll talk about that rain in the forecast, that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, what's the update on the breaking news? >> kari, the first one is on the peninsula, there's still a delay and one of the folks delayed is the tow truck getting toward holly street or just shy of that. the crash still blocks just one lane, the backup now to about woodside. highway 84, there is a continued problem for the peninsula. el camino easy access around that and having the signals 280 is also clear. that is the problem on the peninsula. 101 clear through mountain view and has been since 11:00 yesterday. lots of problems in that area. there was that closure yesterday, not today. over here, the other alert is going on for westbound 80 at cherry glen in vacaville. we still have the s status, they have to remove cars to clear a couple lanes, that's the big backup. back to you. >> all right, so early this morning. 5:38 right now. a disaster on a california highway is raising a lot of questions.

5:41, a lot of cars out on 580 heading into the bay area. we're going to see our temperatures this morning starting out still nice and cool with some low 40s, and also more clouds, but we'll still have a nice and comfortable afternoon. we'll talk about some rain in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. at least all those cars in dublin are moving at the limit. over here two areas of breaking news, update for vacaville west 80 at cherry glen, they hope to have another lane open, half of west 80 is open, still blocked by two lanes and a crash there and a tow truck should be arriving at the holly crash site as well on the peninsula, that will cause a delay but folks traveling up into redwood city and san car close that's the delay. the tow truck will be on the

shoulder. use caution. imagine waking up to this morning. a strong earthquake rattling central greece overnight. this one was a 6.3 magnitude earthquake. happened about 13 miles away from the town of larissaus afte reported overnight as well. experts say damage is likely. they will be assessing it. no word, however, on any injuries. developing new, the ntsb is investigating the southern california crash that killed at least 13 people. the cause of this crash is still unknown. it happened early yesterday morning, near the california/mexico border in imperial county. a semitruck hauling gravel collided with a ford explorer. there were 25 people crammed inside that ford explorer when the crash happened, ages range from 15 to 53. officials say that is concerning. >> the vehicle is not meant for that many people. it's unfortunate that that number of people were put into that vehicle.

>> investigators said that there were no rear seats in that ford explorer. more details san diego doctors at two different hospitals are helping treat patients who were injured in that crash. officials say the injuries of those involved range from fractures to life-threatening injuries. new details a judge presiding over the trial of george floyd trial deals a disappointing blow to his family. due to the pandemic seating at the trial will be limited, only one member of floyd's family will be allowed to watch the trial at one time. the limited seating rules will also apply to former police officer derek chauvin's family. chauvin facing second-degree murder and manslaughter charges. calls for new york governor andrew cuomo to resign. new york legislators voted to strip cuomo of his emergency covid powers.e ld bpassed as early as friday. the governor is facing several scandals, an investigation into

run this morning in san rafael, temperatures start out in the mid-40s and we'll see it warming up today, fairly quickly at lunch time, we are at 60 degrees and some peaks of sunshine for today, as we check out of course what you need to know before you head out the door. take that allergy medication. we have a moderate amount of tree pollen from cedar, ash, juniper and pine to moderate amount of some grass pollen, too. what we need is some rain that will help wash a lot of those allergens out but we know it will take a couple of days before it gets here. in the meantime we're enjoying nice weather. so as we go through the forecast we'll see the rain chances going up for the weekend, starting on saturday, with the first storm system coming in, and then there will be a couple of them right behind that, it will bring in some more rain for early next week, so as we go through the forecast, it's going to be a big change for us, and the first round of rain coming in could bring anywhere from about a half inch of rain from san francisco
