indeed, hmm. we'll talk about that a little later. it's a birthday today! >> hmm >> do i look older? >> happy birthday, laura. i couldn't hold it back. >> thank you. >> we're going to start the day off right because it's so special. mike looks at the commute and the birthday forecast from meteorologist kari hall. >> hey, happy burt day, laura. we're going to have some nice weather for you for today and also some cooler temperatures headed our way for the weekend, but that's after some showers move through late tonight, but it will clear by sunrise and overall this weekend will still be a nice one. temperatures only reaching into the 50s. 67 for a high today in san jose. we'll talk about that rain coming in this weekend. mike, what's going on now for the commute? >> well, the going on in the tri-valley, or something. look at the maps, green overall, traffic flows smoothly but i noticed this over there cutting toward sunol, highway 84 very

slow off vallecitos. i think the crew is slowly moving from overnight roadwork trying to get a start on the weekend. crash 101 at dubose as well. i don't think it's a probably crossing the city but i'll let you know. scare county health leaders scrambling to deal with a shortage of moderna vaccines. this may lead to canceled appointments as soon as today. with more appointments in jeopardy of being postponed. "today in the bay's" ian cull has the latest. >> reporter: another provider says it may have to cancel vaccine appointments next week. this time it's santa clara county at sites like the fairgrounds. the problem? inconsistent supply from the state. first shot appointments could be canceled as they work to make sure people who need second doses get them. this comes after sutter health announced tuesday it would have to cancel 90,000 appointments this month for the same reason. an update, the provider will get 30,000 dose this is week and 30,000 the week after that, all

of them for second shots. sutter will call patients to reschedule. >> we want our county to be certain as to how many appointments they can make because the last thing you want to do is turn people away. >> reporter: assembly member ashkolra of san jose says the state is working to get consistent numbers from the white house. >> the timeliness has more to do, in my understanding, with how late in the process we get information from the federal government as to vaccines coming to our state. the county is understandably frustrated. i think the counties are doing a very good job. >> reporter: the health care providers note cdc guidance which says the second dose can be extended for up to six weeks after the first dose instead of the recommended three to four weeks. >> there's been data from health care workers who have been vaccinated in israel and london that after the first dose, we can definitively say you get about 85% protection. so you have good efficacy after your first dose.

the second dose seals the deal but it could be delayed. >> reporter: the state tells us "manufacturing continues to be slower than we all would like, and it's causing shortages across the state and the country." ian cull, "today in the bay." a follow-up now, contra costa county school leaders started to replace oakley school board members who resigned en masse last month after that hot microphone incident, embarrassing situation played out when board members did not realize they could be seen and heard on a public zoom. they were slamming parents. the board later resigned, the county board brought in people to fill in their seats for the interim. the county's school president named the first replacement this week. don't expect california to lift its mask mandate. he says the state will double down on the mandate and he's shocked states like texas and mississippi are doing the

opposite. yesterday he reiterated the positivity rate in texas far higher than california and this is not the time to let your guard down. >> we will be doubling down on mask wearing, not arguing to follow the example of texas and other states that i think are making a terrible mistake, and again, forgive me, but the positivity rate in california is 2.1%. in texas it's five times california. >> wow. he says the next 100 days will be critical in efforts to contain the virus, with so many people getting vaccinated. just two weeks after saying schools can resume outdoor sports the state is giving high schools the green light to resume indoor sports in the wake of a settlement of a lawsuit filed against the state by two students from the bay area. one of the students from san francisco says it's time to get back to sports. >> as of right now we're waiting on san francisco county to do the right thing and to take note

of what the other california counties are doing, and we're optimistic that the city will do the right thing. the agreement, there will be hurdles for schools to clear. for starters each individual county must give schools the go-ahead. let's take a look at that forecast. is it clear today? >> yes, we are all clear today, and we are going to gradually see some clouds moving in later. as we get a live look out there in the tri-valley, and people heading out the door, it's busy on this friday morning, and those temperatures in the upper 30s. we'll see it warming up again today. notice that we'll start to see some clouds here and there, but still a lot of sunshine peeking out from behind those clouds, and we will see this storm system approaching by late tonight, especially in the north bay, so we'll talk more about the time line of when the rain comes in, that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, what's going on right now

for the commute? >> kari, i had been checking the last few minutes with cal trans, no stated crews in the tri-valley. the speed sensors again still coming down through livermore and in toward sunol, we have that very slow drive but it is slowly pushing over toward 680, the same pattern we'd see if there was a crew clearing. it may not be cleared through cal trans. might be a local crew there. getting toward the bay bridge, a smooth, easy drive into and through the area of the toll plaza but over in san francisco itself indeed, 101 at dubose there was a crash there. our speed sensors are registering a slow drive for the cut-through so use the dublin interchange for now. back to you. stepping up enforcement. coming up on "today in the bay," the new tactic just announced anti-asian attacks in the bay area. plus, an interesting makeup collaboration turning heads this morning. is it an avocado yes or avocado

very good friday morning to you. taking a peek outside, downtown san jose, clear skies as you can see. a very cold start. well not very, come on, it's about 41 maybe? that's california standards. ooh, it's cold. elsewhere not so much but i am a californian at heart. >> we noticed the difference of just like a few degrees, cooler in the morning so it's feeling a little bit chilly out there and we have a cold front on the way bringing some rain to far northern california we'll approach later on tonight. the time line it will be a dry day and start to notice some more clouds moving in especially this afternoon and tonight at

10:00, the north bay getting some downpours and it will start to approach san francisco right around midnight. sweeping through the south bay and at 7:00 by the time the sun rises tomorrow, the rain will have cleared and we can enjoy the rest of our weekend with some sunshine, it will be a touch cooler and breezy. we'll have a couple more storm systems coming in behind that. the next one will be a little bit more of a slow mover and we'll bring in more widespread rain early next week. a 0.1 0.25 inch of rain and 0.5 inch in half moon bay. we could see overall an inch for the north bay and coastal and inland rainfall totals less, closer to a half inch of rain. as we look at the sierra snowpack we're doing bad here, only at 59% statewide, the

normal amount of snow and we have some more snow in the forecast, over the weekend, it will be very light coming in late tonight, early tomorrow morning, about three to five inches the rest of the weekend is all clear and the next week we could see eye few more inches of snow. that doesn't help us get caught up to normal. a couple of storm systems coming in, the first one will be for tonight and then tomorrow we're seeing some sunshine during the afternoon more rain on monday, tuesday, as well as wednesday. mike, getting out on the roads on this morning, everything here looks pretty clear. >> and it is pretty much the same on our maps. let's talk about a couple of differences. i think we have a good difference over in the tri-valley, where we had all the red cutting through livermore and sunol. things are starting to improve as far as the speeds go, up to the orange zone. no light traffic through the area.

a couple of slow-moving vehicles, a crew from overnight maybe work in the area they would have taken that and skewed the sensors, so we'll continue to follow that. expect a little slowdown there and overnight tonight, if you're working late at microsoft, linkedin or google plex over there, getting on to the 101 at shoreline will be closed through 9:00 p.m. saturday, use moffitt or ranksdorf and a quick look at the bay bridge shows you how traffic is light there. >> sure is. 4:49. san jose police investigating a shooting that left one man with life-threatening injuries, happened about 10:00 last night on alum rock avenue west of 680. san jose is the latest bay area city taking new steps to stop anti-asian violence. police are rolling out a new program where multilingual officers will go door to door in certain areas where asian americans could become targeted. community leaders say they're grateful but these attacks are not a new problem. >> to say that it's new, i don't

think it is. i think it's always been there but i'm glad that the city is now partnering up with us, and doing something like this. this helps, you know what i mean? having their presence says that enough is enough. you know? >> officers say a new foot patrol will be a good first step in creating change and hopefully boosting safety. and if you are looking for ways to help, nbc bay area, telemundo 48 and our parent company partnered with the bay area based asian pacific fund. we'll provide grants to organizations working to stop attacks against asians and asian american communities. if you want to donate, you can go to our website, nbcbayarea.com and find that link. some bay area counties are now setting their sites on orange as in the morning tier of covid restrictions which could be in a matter of ten or so days. san mateo county right now appears on it the closest reaching it moving into the less restrictive tier from red, would be the latest step towards

normalcy on the peninsula, dare i say it, as "today in the bay's" jean elle explains in this report. >> reporter: as more customers take a seat inside, struggling restaurants are getting back up to speed. cafe 382 in south san francisco is buzzing. >> more sales, the morehere, mo tips. it's just more good things for everybody. >> reporter: right now five bay area counties are in the red tier, already in red for a week, san mateo county officials are hopeful it will meet the state criteria to advance to the less restrictive orange tier march 16th. >> we're really trending in the right direction. coupled with vaccinations i'm optimistic that we can move to orange. >> reporter: governor gavin newsom is planning to make changes to the requirements, which may allow more counties to advance. >> and we want to incorporate vaccination rates into the tiering, and that will allow

pope francis has landed in baghdad. it's his first ever visit to iraq. pope francis is there to urge the country's dwindling number of christians to stay put and help rebuild the country, after years of war and persecution, brushing aside the coronavirus pandemic, and safety concerns. during his three-day visit, the pope will meet iraqi officials and a top shiite cleric. the pope will also visit the ancient city in the birth place of biblical patriarch abraham. this visit comes just days after an attack on u.s. airbase. we'll be right back.

the hospital notified eligible people to come on down right away. workers gave the vaccines to front line workers in the bay view and people over 65 in visitacion valley and no doses were wasted. a follow-up on the damage in big basin state park from the czu fire in santa cruz county. flames destroyed a large segment of the park. >> now it won't reopen for at least a year. "sf gate" reports recently they got a tour and they say they saw some still smoldering debris, which scientists call completely normal, after a wildfire that size, but in this case, it's not helping that we've had such an unusually dry winter. the fire is still considered fully contained. 4:56, and standing ovation. this is for a newborn baby and his mother. >> look at that when maria advantage was four months pregnant her heart stopped and doctors at kaiser santa clara used a special machine to bring her back. when she and baby jenson went home yesterday everyone had big reason to celebrate. the sacramento couple came here when her heart first started to fail. maria doesn't recall very much. >> i don't remember anything. i woke up, and i'm already all cut up and awake. >> she was out for about a week, and you know, it was nothing but bad news until dr. hahn came along and introduced us to the ecmo. >> we were the ecmo team, essentially a pump that is life support, pumps blood for you, replaces the function of the heart. >> wow, isn't it amazing? kept the baby alive.

at the end of her two-week ordeal there was a little doubt but ultrasound tests confirmed baby jenson had pulled through just fine so it's back to sacramento until this week's delivery. you may wonder if the ecmo machine is helpful for covid patients as well. doctors say it can be in some cases but in that miracle baby it's wonderful it worked out. >> i love seeing that. i'm glad they're able to go home and everyone's happy. you know what? more south bay students closer to returning to the classroom. coming up here on "today in the bay," the major step forward for one of the busiest school districts. plus, moving out of the bay area, the new report on the ongoing exodus in the city facing the hardest hits, all coming up. you're watching "today in the bay."
