current conditions at sfo and in walnut creek. meteorologist kari hall is tracking all of what we can expect and how much more rain is on the . good morning to you. it's wednesday already. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. speaking of that weather, last night, kari, i heard a loud boom. i didn't know what it was. i thought something exploded but my neighbor was like no, that was thunder and lightning. >> yes, we've seen that across parts of the bay area. we're still looking out for that for today, and these showers and thunderstorms that have been moving through have also been producing some brief, heavy rain. as we get a look at it on storm ranger, we've seen the waves of rain passing by. right now in contra costa county, even some snow on mt. diablo. we are seeing that rain moving over toward antioch and discovery bay, as well as the

tri-valley. we'll start out with another round of rain coming in and also the rain for now clearing san jose, but moving over toward mt. hamilton, with some snow, so we're watching all of this, mike. what have as far as traffic reports? >> let's show the folks over at the san jose camera on 101, it doesn't show the traffic super clearly because the lights are coming toward us but there is the glow and you can watch. see the water kicking up behind the cars? slick roadways out there. that's the general note as we look at the map, showing general green highlighting the pink and the white you'll see is snow and possible frost. watch for that on the peaks, the higher elevations. it's cold out there but wet. how wet in the tri-valley and spots for flooding, 101 at ellis and in spots around the maze but the maze itself moves smoothly. back to you, laura. >> you want to take it easy. thanks, mike. 4:32. governor newsom taking a swipe at critics while he delivers his annual state of the state address, the stakes high as he fights off efforts to

recall him from office. the governor laying out the challenges ahead and highlighting what he says are california's successes in the past year. "today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney reports. >> covid was no one's fault but it quickly became everyone's burden. >> reporter: at dodgers stadium in los angeles where tens of thousands have been vaccinated, the governor spoke of the lives lost to the virus in california, 54,000 of them, roughly the number of seats at the stadium. >> covid patients cared for by doctors and nurses and paramedics who despite the chaos and risk to themselves paused to hold the hands of strangers in their final moments. >> reporter: the governor, speaking in glowing terms of the equity of the state's vaccination rollout, and of brighter days ahead and there was a swipe at those he called naysayers an doomsayers, those pushing a petition to force a recall election. >> we will not be distracted from getti shots in arms and our economy booming again. this is a fight for california's future. >> reporter: the chairman of the

san francisco republican party is one of those who would like to see the governor gone from office. >> covid was particularly difficult for california, because of his lockdowns, and now his own hypocrisy telling people to stay at home and he's at the french laundry having dinner. >> reporter: the governor utilizing video to drive home his message touted his wildfires, homelessness and school reopening. >> we turned the conversation whether to reopen to when. >> the fact he can't stand up to the teacher's union projects a weakness that i think is devastating to a politician. >> reporter: the people behind that recall petition say they have more than enough signatures to get it on the ballot. the governor says he has made mistakes but he's learned from them. terry mcsweeney, "nbc bay area news." today say big day for businesses in two bay area counties, alameda and solano are moving into the less restrictive

red tier along with santa cruz county. here is a look at the updated bay area map for you. the red tier means retail can open at 50%. restaurants can allow indoor dining at 25% capacity, indoor religious worship can resume at 25% and for gyms, it's 10%. the bay area's first orange tier county may not be far behind. recent data, if it holds, san mateo county reach that vel next week. that would allow bars and breweries to reopen outdoo 50%. san francisco supervisor matt haney is stepping up his push to get more vaccinations to some of the city's most vulnerable neighborhoods. in a recent statement, he calls on public health leaders to mobilize vaccine efforts for low income residents in the tenderloin and treasure island. he says both make the criteriar been vaccinated. another major setback to

get out for refusing to wear a mask. they yell profanities and slurs, one of them reached over the seat and ripped his mask off. we spoke with the driver subhakar khadka. >> i wanted them to leave my car. >> the women eventually got out and one of them pepper sprayed the inside of his car. >> i was frightened, scared. i had never, ever, ever experienced that kind of intimidation in my life. >> reporter: he says uber first offered him $20, then $120. the community is rallying around him, without him asking, me for and to clean out his car and any legal fees he'll need. >> i am truly amazed by the support i got. it's overwhelming, and i really

appreciate it. >> reporter: the organizer, cyan bannister is an early uber investor who wrote she is appalled at the lack of uber's response. >> i'm disappointed how uber has handled this situation and i think they should have known it would become a pr situation for them, but they also should have just done the right thing. >> reporter: uber tells us in a statement the info in the gofundme is not correct. we have had multiple conversations with the driver to offer our support. the figures they cite are not current. other videos have also surfaced on social media, posted by one of the women believed to have been in the car. we reached out to her for comment but have not heard back. also, uber and lyft say she's banned from using their platforms. even though it was an uber ride, lyft says the unacceptable treatment of the driver in this video compelled us to permanently remove the rider from theyfty. subhakar is still shaken and

wall street is set to open mostly higher this morning. we'll see it follow through. investors came pouring back into popular tech and growth stocks after a pullback. gains in apple, facebook and amazon, with tesla also helping to drive the nasdaq nearly 4%. see what i did there? it was the best day for the nasdaq since last november. the index had fallen into what technicians call a corrections territory, down more than 10% from its recent highs. close to recovery now. we'll get a report in a few minutes on consumer prices, which could see whether inflation is running hotter than expected. kayak is launching a new feature to allow guests at smaller and independent hotels to use the app to check in, lock their rooms and order food or fresh towels. the travel site will debut the system next month at the kayak miami beach hotel, a newly

course some wet roads, certainly in richmond, but of course san francisco, san jose, palo alto the wet road ways. check out this video taken last night in san jose. [ wind blowing ] >> vianey arana capturing that, a lot of active weather out there. you can hear the thunder, i'm sure, across the bay area. i certainly heard it last night in san jose. meteorologist kari hall you've been timing out just how long you need the umbrellas and after last night seemed like for a good minute. >> it's pretty much all day. we still have a lot of this storm system that has to work through the bay area, and it's brought in some waves of rain with some breaks in between. right now we're getting some showers moving into san francisco, but we've also seen the other wave just kind of move farther inland to the east bay, as we see it moving through antioch, bethel island and the

discovery bay area. we're seeing some of those showers moving through, and then also heading down towards some of our east bay hills, mt. diablo, covered with snow right now. you can see all the different colors on the radar, as you go up above 3,000 feet, all of that rain changing over to snow, w n. so here's what we can expect. some off and on rain, even a chance of some lightning. we will also be watching out for the potential of some small hail dropping out of a lot of these storms for today, and temperatures staying very sierra snow continues for today. the possibility over a foot of snow and the road conditions still very slippery. that's a live look at dublin and the tri-valley commute as our temperatures today stay chilly, we'll stay in the 40s throughout the morning with some off and on showers and once again, there will be some breaks in between, that's what we're seeing as we go hour by hour into the afternoon. some waves of rain and once again, that chance of some

thunderstorms, some low elevation snow, and then it gradually starts to wind down tonight. tomorrow morning we'll start to clear out and we'll be left with the cool temperatures but once again, with the snow on some of our bay area peaks, we'll be able to see that by tomorrow morning, once all of this starts to clear out and temperature wise, it's going to be warming up, going from the low 50s to the mid-60s this weekend as we spring forward early on sunday morning. heading over to you, mike, have you seen any problems this morning on the roadways? >> you mentioned the slick conditions, that is the case all over. so that general reminder we give, kari, use caution and go slower than you think you might need. as we look at the map the roadways, cars are well spaced so there's plenty of area to get around, plenty of opportunity for you to do it on the roads. you see the green highlighting all over the map and that indicates the wet roadways throughout the bay area. over in oakland, i have circled where there was a crash that cleared from the area near macarthur and also a little flooding reported around

macarthur and jackson, 24, off of 580, the general area, y arro slowing but let's show you the live shot. you see the flags, kind of calm right now but overnight, chp did say it was gusty. watch out. easy traffic here and a nice smooth flow through the north bay as well. marcus, we're looking at the curves here at terra linda and the slick roadway with the shine. minneapolis jury selection resumes for the trial for the former police officer charged in the death of george floyd. derek chauvin was the officer seen in that video, putting his knee to floyd's neck for more than eight minutes. so far, three jurors have been selected and attorneys on both sides have been hard-pressed to find anyone not biased by the ive media coverage. now to new developments in the insurrection on capitol the national guard plans to stay in d.c. for ten more weeks following january's violent attack. its mission was expected to end

on friday. the fbi is now releasing video that shows the person they believe planted two pipe bombs in d.c. the night before the riots. atic national committee and republican national committee offices. a $100,000 reward is being offered for information leading to that person's identity. bay area activists are leading a new lawsuit against a company whose technology is used by law enforcement agencies across the nation. clearview ai uses so-called scraping technology. it collects billions of online images for data base which private and government agencies can tap into for a fee. local immigrants rights groups claim the technology is used without consent and violate's people's rights. the suit claims racial bias because it misidentifies people of color. clearview says its software complies with the law and protected by the first amendment. the ceo says independent studies show no racial bias. no carryover for
