"today in the bay's" bob redell is already live at the scene for us. what are investigators telling you, if anything, yet, bob? >> reporter: well, good morning to you. laura, this happened at the preya living city center apartment complex on freemont not far with the intersection of

stevenson and the murder took place behind me in the carport. police are still investigating the crime scene. i spoke with an officer about 30, 45 minutes ago. this happened around 10:30 last night. it was a man who was shot and killed. the body still laying in the back of the carport. you can see in the video at one point that freemont police had a bearcat out here, that's a tactical vehicle and we believe they had drones and they were armed and they were searching for the suspect and they think maybe not just one, but possibly two men they are looking for. definitely one, possibly two. they didn't have suspect description or info to give me or vehicle information. they are looking for these people or person and as i mentioned they did have a force out here and have pulled back the force and still looking for thes up to the shooting, police have not indicated as such. again, one man dead here in this apartment complex, the preya

priorities. >> reporter: the plan includes aid for governments, schools, businesses, and families. >> you will receive $1400 checks by the end of march. help is on the way. >> reporter: direct deposits could start next week. not one republican voted for it concerned about the $1.9 trillion price tag. >> beware, there's no such thing as free money. >> what is wrong with you? we are going to act with the fierce urgency of now. >> reporter: now new cases, hospitalizations and death rates are dropping, as president biden prepares to sign the bill tomorrow. tracie potts nbc news. we are tracking a vast improvements in hospitalizations when it comes to covid-19 in the bay area. take a look at these numbers that were in the chronicle. as of monday morning there were 500 coronavirus patients in the hospital in the bay area. in january, during the height of the surge, about 2200. that's a decrease of about 77%.

about a year ago, the number was about 1300. meantime south bay leaders today plan to present a unified to blue shield. the health provider seeing distribution in some counties outside the bay area already. full statewide oversight is expected by the end of the month. today supervisor cindy chavez will lead a news conference opposing blue shield's involvement. that is expected to happen at 1:00. santa clara county is in the thick of a vaccine shortage. for now all first-dose appointments are on hold. that includes vaccinations for 8500 kaiser patients who had their appointments canceled yesterday after already being rescheduled once by the county. some of the cancellations include second-dose shots which kaiser is prioritizing. county leaders believe the shortages may be due to the state reprioritizing its distribution to hit the equity goals. an asian-american man

fighting for his life after being attacked in the east bay. this is one incident in the string of attacks targeting people of asian descent. police say that the suspect has a criminal past. "today in the bay's" jean elle has more on the attack that has rattled the community. >> reporter: a 75-year-old oakland man is at highland hospital after being attacked and robbed during his morning walk. >> something must be done to protect our seniors. >> reporter: chinatown chamber of commerce says the victim is another asian-american elder violently assaulted in oakland. chance says the retired man's three daughters are gathering at the hospital where they say he is in grave condition with a serious head injury. >> i don't think hate is responding at this time and it doesn't look too good according to the daughters. >> reporter: oakland police sources say investigators have arrested 26-year-old tiante bailey in oakland with inn connection with the assault and robbery. according to jail records he's

recovery. today we get as we do every thursday the number of people filing for new unemployment claims and we'll also get a gauge on job openings and turnover in the a month called the jolt report. boeing close to a deal to sell dozens of its 737 max jets to southwest airlines, reportedly that deal worth billions of dollars. this would be the company's largest order for the max since the faa lifted the safety ban on the jet. a deal would come just months after alaska airlines agreed to buy two dozen jets. the southwest ceo wanted to make a decision about updating the aging fleet and was debating between the 737 max and t airbus a-220. peloton has brought back a popular feature with a few tweaks. sessions is similar to a netflix watch party. you invite friends to an on demand cycling class and send an invite link to the class and

a peek of the snow in the sierra as well as the weekend is approaching. good morning to you. we'll check in with mike in a little bit, but marcus look who is in the house, vianey in for kari this morning. >> hey, v. >> hey, good morning. you know, we definitely saw a good amount of rain. we needed it and we saw hail, which i think surprised a lot of people and shouldn't have had they been watching forecasting by kari hall, right. it's okay. we still have you covered. if you're wondering how much rain did we get i have the answer in a minute. doppler radar and satellite, the monterey area, the south bay, i will zoom in and it's cold out there for the hilltop area. low elevation snow in some of the peaks, 2,000, 2500 feet you can see the mix of white and pink on the radar, signals some snow in there. let's look at the current temperature right now. clearlake 36 degrees, santa rosa 39, and it's going to get colder as we inch closer to the

morning. the 48-hour rainhe national weather service a numb will update that. service tweeted out. according to the numbers, march 10th was the third wettest day for san jose. so typically we see in san jose about -- just under an inch for the month of march and right now we're i would say at about 9300 so we're almost at normal but not quite there yet. we need one more boost of rain. the hour bihour outlook you can see through morgan hill we still have a couple rain cells there and aside from that we will clear out nicely into the afternoon. there is still some instability in the atmosphere which could leave room for the possibility of maybe even observed hail yet again through the south bay portions. afternoon sunshine, that will be great to see.

called aggressive tactics against nonviolent protesters in the wake of george floyd's death. since then, the city has taken steps to reform the department. two southern california postal workers under arrest each accused of funneling money from fraudulent obtained edd debit card into u.s. postal service money orderers. investigators say the cards were issued by the edd to accounts that were stolen identities. these were filed in connection to the pandemic-related job losses. the edd is thought to have shelled out tens of billions of dollars to bogus claims. some people with legitimate edd accounts have had to wait months to access them. that's including this man you see right here in san diego account county. he was frozen out of the edd, first started to undercover the wide-scale fraud. he got help from our sister station investigative unit to get back in. >> they just keep telling me for the past two months that they're
