we'll take a look ahead to the weekend. any problems for early morning commuters? >> we do have a problem. not because of the overnight rain or yesterday's rain but because of some activity. a car went into a light pole. as you look at the highway, this is calaveras or highway 237 continuation. a car went into a light pole. no major injuries from what it sounds like, but there's a closure one direction of eastbound 237. that's our breaking news that we start with. the rest of the south bay is fine. very light traffic. >> thanks, mike. >> new details. a 76-year-old asian american grandmother attacked in san francisco. but she's recovering at home. her family says that it will be a long time before she feels safe to go outside again. the woman was attacked on market street. this is on wednesday. her daughter and grandson say now she can't even open her right eye. >> one of her black eyes is

bleeding unstoppable. >> she cannot see anything right now. >> police say 39-year-old steven jenkins assaulted the woman and an 83-year-old. jenkins is in jail, according to a gofundme post, fam is in the hospital with a fractured nose and possible neck fractures. people are showing their support for the asian american community by donating to the pages for both of the victims, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars. you can help in the efforts to stop the hate. nbc bay area, telemundo, and comcast have partnered with the bay area based asian pacific fund and we'll provide grants to organizations working to stop the attacks against the asian and asian american community. if you want to donate, we have added a link on nbcbayarea.com. >> virus variants are circulating across the country, as the pandemic restrictions continue to relax. in at least 13 states, infections are actually

increasing. raising a lot of concern about another possible wave. there's new evidence that shows vaccines are effective against it. here's today in the bay's samuel quintana. >> virus variants are circulated across the country as pandemic restrictions continue to relakz. in 13 states, cases are increasing. here in california, the downward trend continues, but there's some concern about the variant first found in the golden state. it's now the dominant strain hear. >> it's increasing in prevalent to about 50%, and probably even more right now in bay area counties. >> researchers are still trying to see if this variant may be more resistant against covid-19 treatments and vaccines. one doctor says there are plenty of reasons to be hopeful. she's studying the effective vaccine treatments in the uk and israel. >> you're seeing lots of

decreases in cases and hospitalizations. >> in some lab tests, the california variant looks resistant. antibodies sometimes don't hold up well, but the doctor spent much of her career treeching hiv patients, so she focuses on t-cells instead of antibodies and a couple studies show those parts of our immune system hold up well against covid-19 variants. >> the vaccines create as equal a t-cell response, which is why i don't think we're seeing increases despite circulating variants. >> at stanford university's labs, they're also seeing promising data. >> some data would suggest that the current vaccine by pfizer and moderna should still be good against the california variants. for that, i'm not so worried. >> california continues to ramp up its vaccination program, hitting a record with nearly a million doses given in the last two days. but there's still work to be

will add more cars to handle the increasing ridership. actual timetables for them right now remain the same, but for some of the busiest runs you're going to have more cars added. riders, if you're in richmond, listen to this. the line will no longer have to change cars for the sfo-bound train. also, cal train plans to add more cars to its service as the ridership there starts to recover. >> and we've got more details in san francisco. muni service there slowly rebounding, but three light rail lines now on hold are likely to stay that way through the end of the year. they expect to bring back 85% of its service by january 1st. but now, that will not include the l, the m ocean view, or k ingleside train. that's mostly due to a lack of train manpower. >> okay, team, how are we doing? it's friday morning, up and running. maybe a nice forecast in the works as well?

>> yeah, i think we're going to be getting outside today. yesterday, it was kind of raining off and on, so we stayed inside more. and today, we're seeing some of those showers moving through, but it's also a milder start as our temperatures have mostly been in the upper 40s and low 50s, as you get ready to head out the door, we're still seeing some of the showers in the north bay, and the roads are still wet in the east bay as we get a live look at dublin, checking out 580 and what's going on there. as far as temperatures, it's still going to be a light jacket day as we go from the upper 40s to low 50s by later this morning. we'll talk about a warmer weekend in a few minutes. how's it looking heading to work this morning? >> i have breaking news for that issue. the closure of calaveras boulevard behind me, the south bay map, let's zoom in toward the area right near milpitas city hall. we're circling the intersection with milpitas boulevard and calaveras. watch the intersection with

hey, it's friday morning. good morning to you. not a car out there on the golden gate bridge. are you sleeping in? oh, wait, there's something coming down the track there, but we're up. ready to get things going, right, team. >> ready to go. >> that's right. >> all right. let's look at that forecast. no rain in sight? >> no rain in sight, after this all moves out. we're going to have a dry weekend. but in some spots, it's still raining a little bit, as you get ready to head out the door. let's look at storm ranger. it does show where some of the showers are moving through mostly right now in parts of the north bay as we get a look at marin county. osfor parts of southern sonoma county. as we open up the picture, i want to show you what else you're seeing. if you're hiding the road, some of the showers across the region, and still some snow in

the sierra, and still some heavy rain in monterey through much of the central coast. if you're at home today just doing the home school recess, let's check out brentwood in our forecast for today, starting out with some low 50s. it will still be a nice day. still wearing some long sleeves or a light jacket, but we'll have a mix of sun and clouds today. and the rain will be moving out. with all of our temperatures today reaching into the upper 50s and low 60s, pretty even across the board from the coastal areas to the inland valleys. this storm system moving on, we'll see some high pressure moving in right behind that. we know high pressure can cause some dry weather and more sunshine, and that's what we'll see even as woe go into the middle of next week, as it doesn't move and all of the storm systems stay to the north of the bay area. as we look at our temperature trend in spots like san jose, south bay temperatures go from the upper 50s to the 70s over the next few days. hopefully you're ready for spring like weather and we'll

see that continuing with once again more sunshine as the quiet weather pattern settles into the bay area and the temperatures will be warming up. for now, let's head over to mike with an update on the breaking news this morning. >> you said spring starts saturday at 2:37. i'm going to go to 2:37, but it's on the map, we're looking at the overall sensors for the highways. 237, if you take that connector between 280 and 680, that's where we have the closure in the eastbound direction. details, only one block from city hall to el cerrito. if you're familiar with the area. if you are not, you can eat at el cerrito. a quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza, taking a live camera there, you see light, easy traffic, as we expect friday morning. we may see the metering lights on around 6:00. >> thanks. developing now, key rulings

are expected in the trial for derek chauvin, the former police officer facing murder charges in george floyd's death. the defense has requested to delay the proceedings. it comes as a rally calling for justice in the case is set to take place tonight in minnesota at the capitol. it's hosted by black lives matter minnesota and communities united against police brutality. >> now to the insurrection from capitol hill and a new plea from the fbi. it's asking for help identifying ten suspects believed to be involved. dramatic new enhanced video highlights some of what the fbi calls some of the most vicious attacks on police officers that day. they include beating officers with a table leg and nails. spraying officers with a fire extinguisher as well and a chemical among others. investigators so far have arrested more than 300 people for their part in the insurrection. >> the labor department is following through with a plan to

hold off on boosting minimum wage for h-1-b visa holders. the trump administration originally sought to impose that hike. the idea was it may encourage businesses to hire domestically for tech jobs instead of looking overseas. the idea is now put on hold for 18 months. the department cites more time to consider the legal and policy issues. >> new details on the bombshell announcement at santa clara university. father kevin o'bryant is on leave while the university investigates what they call an alleged impropriety. he may have displayed behavior not consistent with jesuit beliefs. he's been the president of the school for two years now and the school says he is fully cooperating with this investigation. for many of us, it's been a very long and tough year.
