hurdles among california voters the campaign could be forced to deal with as "today in the bay" starts right now. good wednesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike keeping on eye on the commute. we'll get to that in a bit. first, start with meteorologist kari hall this morning. kari? >> feels a little bit warmer this morning, because of those gusty winds we've had. take a look at some of these temperatures you'll have, as you get ready to head out the door, it's 54 in oakland. it's 49 degrees in morgan hill and in san jose 52 degrees, with a milder start, it will still be a fairly nice day, with a few clouds in the mix, but our temperatures go from the 40s and 50s to the upper 60s today, and we won't have all clear skies, with a few more changes ahead. we'll talk more about this as well as that warmer weekend forecast that's coming up in just a few minutes. >> all right, kari. we're looking at a pretty smooth

drive obviously as you'd imagine. a new crash to point out on the map. green sensors and a little bit of slowing out of the altamont is typical, that's kind of what we see right now. there may be a little slowing south 880 approaching marina. a crash reported first in the left lanes and then the right lanes, i think it's off the freeway now and no sensor slowing over the last few. the bay bridge toll plaza is cleared. looked like slowing in the north bay. we'll check that out through marin county and also an issue for oakland getting from alameda coming up. back to you, laura. >> thank you very much, mike. new overnight, santa rosa police investigating a chaotic and deadly incident at a homeless encampment, it happened last night near roberts avenue and sebastopol road. it started with a fight involving two men. one of them reportedly jumped into a car, went across lanes from the scene and has not been found. the other man in the fight is now being treated for injuries.

it's not clear if the woman was part of the initial confrontation. the san francisco school board president is not giving up the fight to hold onto her position. last night critics turned up the heat demanding she step down with the emergence of the controversial tweets against asian-americans. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd reports the vice president herself had something to say. >> causes an elected official her non-apology is indignant, she made racist comments. >> reporter: parents and community members angry and frustrated calling for vice president alison collins' resignation. >> so disrespect hurt and outrage a teacher 206 years calling racist words. you can't generalize a race of people based on a few experiences. >> reporter: collins was at the meeting listening to those who want her out and those who showed support. >> you say you believe in restorative practices, you want to use it for the police, you want to use it for criminals,

you want to engage in restorative when it's convenient for you but when it's hard you don't want to do that work. >> reporter: it comes from tweets collins posted in 2016, in them, she supremacy and racism, apparently stemming from an experience she had with her daughter an experience she reads to board members in a letter written by her daughter three and a half years ago. >> "last year i heard boys joking about the kkk and sending kids back to mexico." >> reporter: in one twitter thread she says talk to many low bell parents and will you hear praise of tiger moms and disparagement of black and brown culture. san francisco mayor london breed is calling for her ouster, along with a long list of supervisors two school board members and state lawmakers including senator scott weiner. >> i'm surprised at the breadth of support that it has. >> reporter: nancy tong is a member of the san francisco democratic party and authored a

resolution demanding she step down. >> because of the very important issues that the board is facing, that she has lost a certain amount of effectiveness. >> reporter: collins said she appreciated the opportunity to be a part of a restorative and transformative dialogue going forward. she again expressed her sincere and heartfelt apologies. we reached out to her and she has yet to respond. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." 4:35. this morning, tributes are growing for the victims killed in the shooting rampage of a colorado supermarket. ten people, including a police officer, were killed at the king scoops store. a makeshift memorial at the scene brings people with flowers, cards and grief back to that scene. president biden has ordered all flags to be lowered at half staff to honor those victims. >> those lost range in age from 20 to 65 years old, they include eric talley, a 51-year-old father of seven and veteran,

boulder police officer. also one of those killed in the attack, the father of a monterey county woman, erica mahoney, her father, who was 61 years old would want her to be strong for his granddaughter. 21-year-old ahmad alissa is charged in the case, facing ten counts of first-degree murder. emily giffiy an employee was outside when the shooting began. >> we heard this pop, pop, pop, pop, and she just like grabbed onto me and hid under my arm. >> both were able to escape without getting hurt. there's no word yet on a motive but police say they see no evidence of terrorism or a hate crime. fighting violence with action. a volunteer patrol on the streets of san francisco's chinatown gaining momentum. they're learning to confront potential trouble in a whole new way. "today in the bay's" jean elle has why this mission is

personal. >> reporter: volunteers are showing up as part of the safety patrols hoping to restore a sense of safety to the neighborhood. tonight, volunteers are learning a little bit about what to do if they encounter trouble. >> hey, what's going on over there? is everything okay? >> reporter: intervening from a distance. just one tool kawasi simon is teaching chinatown safety patrol volunteers as a growing number of people reach out to organizer forest lu, and show up to walk the streets. >> i'm really happy obviously that there's so many people who care. >> reporter: lu says when he saw this video of an elder assaulted and killed, he had to act. >> you see somebody who looks like someone you know, someone that could be your grandpa, your uncle, you know what i mean, someone that could be your friend's dad, it really hurts. >> reporter: from chinatown, lawrence tan joined the patrol for the first time. >> my mom, she's 70 years old and she comes down here to shop all the time and every time she comes down here i get super worried. like dude, i got to watch out for her, i got to watch out for my people. >> reporter: there were enough volunteers to split into groups,

all eyes looking for people who may be preying on the elderly. a car got their attention. >> because the second person did a pass, the driver of that karzaied to leave. >> reporter: lu is hoping the group stops crime before it happens and helps people feel safe in their neighborhood. >> we can go back to some kind of sense of normalcy as the world begins to open up from covid. >> reporter: tan believes it's making a difference. >> it's been a big presence and a big group helps tremendously. >> reporter: jean elle, "today in the bay." some are raising questions this morning over whether a recent robbery in san francisco was motivated by hate. it shows an asian woman dragged by a car as she tries to hold onto her purse. police say it happened sunday after three men assaulted her. the woman eventually lost grip and the men drove off with her purse. police aren't sure if it was a hate crime or a crime of opportunity. the woman's condition is unknown at this time. so far, no arrests. you can help in the efforts to

stop the hate, nbc bay area, telemundo 48 and our parent company comcast have partnered with the bay xwrar-based asian-pacific fund to provide grants to organizations working to stop attacks against asian and asian-american community. since february more than half a million dollars has been donated to the fund. if you want to donate we added a link to our website, nbcbayarea.com. a new poll finds the movement to recall governor newsom may still have a lot of convincing to do if a special election is finalized. the proboly said 53% would vote no at this point. 34% would vote to remove him. newsom has strong support from california registered democrats. happening today, hundreds of janitors will take to the streets of san francisco demanding better workplace safety measures. the group will strike this morning at several buildings like the salesforce tower. it will start at 6:00 in the

morning. the strike is expected to last three days and comes after an eight-month-long stalemate with the city to reach a union contract. new details this morning, a judge is now considering requiring pg&e to conduct more, not less fire-related power shutoffs. the brunt of the shutoffs would happen in six mostly rural northern california counties. the judge overseeing pg&e's criminal probation wants the utility to be more aggressive in prevention where lines run especially close to tall trees. state regulators cite hardships to the most impacted communities. keep an eye on your water usage. the state water board is sending 40,000 notices to people calling for quick conservation. according to "the chronicle" this morning, the board is sending out warnings to small farm owners to big cities. 90% of california now in a state of drought. the board will vote this summer on who will get priority when it comes to the use of the water

which fell more than 3%. the s&p 500 was hit by losses in airlines and cruise lines, while the nasdaq got hit once again by big tech names, apple, facebook and tesla all closing lower, dragging it down by 1%. the move coming because of renewed concerns about the economic recovery, as covid cases are rising in the u.s. and abroad, and germany has a lockdown. today we're watching for a report on demand for durable goods due out at 8:30 eastern time. and robinhood, the online brokerage app at the center of the trading frenzy with gamestop filing for an ipo. the move comes in the midst of a historic boom in the markets so far this year. companies have raised more than $100 billion through market listings. robinhood has found success of course as well as criticism for its business model to make stock trading easier for retail investors allowing them to buy fractional shares of a company

for free. disney once again delaying some of its biggest movies and adding streaming options. "black widow" the highly anticipated marvel movie starring scarlet johansen was expected may 7th to kick off the traditional summer blockbuster season. disney is pushing the release back to july 9th and says it will be available to stream the same day on disney plus for an additional $30 premiere access fee, similar to what they did with "mulan" last year and "ria the last dragon" early last month. disney will kick off this summer with "cruella"may 8th and available to stream on the same day for the extra fee. those are the latest headlines, back over to you. >> they should have gotten laura to play cruella, she dressed up as her one year and she was

phyllis diller with my i got find that wig. >> wow, that was two years ago almost? wow, time flies. i love that. all right, let's check out what's going on with our breezy winds we've had. it's really been gusty at times. i wanted to show you some of those top wind gusts that we've seen on mt. st. helena reaching 60 miles per hour and mt. diablo, 52-mile-per-hour gust and redwood city 20 and san francisco it's coming down to 15. it's doing a little bit better, as well as san jose, still quite breezy this morning, but as you head out for that morning commute, heads up that in some of those bridges and passes, there still may be some gusty winds this morning, but overall, it's going to gradually start to calm down as our temperatures start out in the upper 40s here in the tri-valley and we'll see it mainly making it into the low

60s by early in the afternoon. hey, eventually we'll make it into the upper 60s for today. it's going to be so comfortable, even slightly warmer, compared to yesterday in spots like concord, reaching 72 degrees. 70 in napa and 70 today in ukiah. going through this forecast, we are in for more dry weather, high pressure really building strong just to the west of us, and that's going to keep those storm systems away, even as a few of them move just off to the east of us, it may provide some gusty winds, but high pressure is going to be the main story and more dry and warm weather going into the next week, so take a look at the seven-day forecast. we go from the low 70s today, slight cooldown tomorrow, but this weekend, the spring and buds, everything is going to really be blooming this weekend, with highs near 80 degrees. mike, it's still been breezy this morning. how is it looking for the commute? >> it's looking like what you said but on the chp report

they're giving wind advisories for pretty much all of your east-to-west bridges. here this is a north-to-south bridge and also issued it for golden gate bridge, apparently a couple cruisers got pushed around. don't do that to the chp or anybody else. smooth drive. just north of there slowing 580, 101 northbound just clearing from the last of the sensors slowing, crews are cleared from marin county now. the hazard sign a fuel leak from an earlier crash over toward francisco boulevard just off the richmond bridge but the bridge itself is smooth. the webster tube marked for closure for overnight maintenance should clear by 5:00 oakland into alameda. use the bridges to the south, san mateo and dumbarton. no wind advisories but still, marcus, going to get breezy probably over the bridges at some point. back to you. >> so true, mike, thank you, mike. you know what? we're still talking about the pandemic and with covid cases

finally starting to taper off in-person inmate visits are about to restart in california's state prison system. they've been halted for more than a year. allowed and going to start april 10 restrictions. at times, finding a covid-19 vaccine appointment can be easier said than done with the recent supply issue. one is using his tech background to try to make it a little easier. andre lee is a google software engineer from san diego but now works in new york. he became frustrated after he was unable to book an appointment for his mom, so he created a bot on twitter that scans websites looking for an appointment for availability. he's already helped many who are willing to do whatever it takes to get a shot in their arm streamline that process. happening now, the torch relay has started for the postponed tokyo olympics. it kicked off in fukushima from
