weekend. >> yes, we're starting out this morning nice and cool. here is a live look outside in dublin as we're already seeing a steady flow of traffic coming down 580 and it's right now only at 38 degrees so those heaters are blasting inside the vehicle, as we go into today we'll see a quick warmup as our temperatures heading up to 75 degrees in concord, 72 degrees in oakland, and san francisco will reach up to 67 degrees. it will be even warmer this weekend, we'll talk about that in the forecast, it's coming up in just a few minutes. happening today a national day of action and healing calling for an end to violence against the asian-american community and several bay area events are planned. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in san jose with the details and pete, santa clara county leaders today are also zeroing in on hate crimes. >> reporter: yes, that's right, cierra. the newly formed hate crime task force will meet later today to

discuss this topic in a virtual meeting at about 12:00 p.m. there are a number of events around the bay area that are taking part in this national day of action and healing. here are some of the events that we know about. in oakland at about 10:30 a.m. in chinatown they'll hold a rally to discuss ways to support the aapi businesses also calling for more funding of course when it comes to public safety. in san francisco, at about 12:30 p.m., there's going to be a march and rally. that will begin at union square, calling attention to a tax attacks on the asian-american elderly community. and in south san francisco at 12:00 p.m., a stop asian hate press conference following calls to create federal action on the area. bay area mayors are coming together to address the crimes. >> we are with you. we stand and we will fight for .

>> reporter: the congressional asian-pacific american caw success is calling for the passing of the no hate act which would provide more funding to address hate crimes. here in santa clara county, the hate crime task force meeting will meet virtually, taking place at 12:00 p.m. reporting live,s. s. for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. big news providing hope across the state this morning. governor newsom now says everyone 16 or older will be eligible to receive a vaccine by april 15th and by april 1st, vaccines open to everyone 50 or older. the cdc plans to ship more than 2 million vaccines to the state next week. california has now administered nearly 16 million doses. in the bay area, the total is approaching 4 million, and half of all marin county residents have now received at lea first conference yesterday, he predicts 200 million shots by his 200th day in office.

he's already hit his goal of 100 million shots in his first 100 days. coming up at 6:30, "today in the bay's" bob redell will show you how you can get started on making that appointment right now. new this morning, west contra costa school leaders reportedly cannot hammer out an agreement on reopening classrooms. the "east bay "times"" reports board members never voted. a vote is planned for later today that could bring about a possible deal. the district is shooting for an april 19th return for all students. and one of the state's most powerful teachers unions presenting new data about classroom reopenings. the california teachers association says 75% of parents believe safety should be the most important priorities when it comes to in-person instruction. while one-third of parents overall believe school reopenings are happening too quickly. 40% of parents of color feel that way.

as far as making it in the bay goes this morning, the good news, rent prices are still dropping across the bay area and not just apartments, but more office spaces are also sitting empty. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live for us in san francisco this morning and sharon, i have to steal some of your thunder. the reports say in san francisco the amount of offices up for lease could fill up the salesforce tower 11 times over. that's pretty wild. >> reporter: that is wild, marcus. take a look, it's right behind us in this perfect view of it. you can see how massive the salesforce tower is and this story really affects all of us, whether you live in the suburbs or here in the city. the "san francisco chronicle" reports there's so much vacant office space now due to the up for lease as you said could fill 11 salesforce towers, and there's talk about whether that office space should be turned into apartment units. this would of course require

city leaders to pass new legislation to allow that, but after the dot-com boom and bust, this was a step taken so it's possible we could see a move in this direction. still, "the chronicle" reports holding on to office space may be more lucrative to owners if and when there's a comeback after the pandemic. you can see rental prices for apartments have dropped. new data from the rental website zumper took a look at rent of one-bedroom apartments continues to plummet e rent is down 32% in sunnyvale from a year, in santa clara and redwood city down 29% followed by 24% here in san francisco, 20% in oakland and 18% in san jose. that of course home and rental more people are heading to those areas to work from home. reporting live in san francisco, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> sharon, thank you. well, new this morning, san francisco's stonestown mall is getting a huge makeover.

"the chronicle" reporting plans are under way for 3,000 new homes to be constructed on parking lots around the mall. and part of the 20th avenue will become a main street. the mall in recent years has lost anchor stores like macy's, nordstroms and the new construction is expected to take about two years. springtime weather improving and less covid spread, the timing is perfect to take in san francisco's second street pedestrian safety improvement project. construction is now complete for an eight-block stretch, and it includes raised crosswalks, sidewalk extensions and improved signal timing to prioritize people on foot as well as wheelchairs. that project started back in 2017. developing now, deadly storms slamming parts of the south, at least five people there have been killed as tornadoes tore across alabama, and new video showing at least one twister touching down. dozens of those homes you can

see in this video we want to show you of buildings they were damaged, the trees also splintered by the storms, just look at the damage left behind. one homeowner, she was celebrating her birthday but she was also ready to refinance her home. >> we heard it and i said oh my god, oh my god, it's gone. i can tell, because you could smell it, you could smell the pine. >> the threat of severe weather in this part of the country is not over as the line of storms move towards georgia. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that storm that's moving and kari, this is tough for anyone in the path of that storm right now. >> yes, absolutely and during the spring time we often see a lot of severe weather across the south, as you start to get some of those cold fronts moving through. we can see some of the storms that are still affecting southern parts of alabama and georgia, and now moving over toward south carolina, so that's something we'll be watching here for our friends and family off to the south, as we get a look at our start of the day here in the bay area, very nice and

quiet day ahead for us, as our temperatures start out in the low 40s. you can see the warming trend we'll have today, if at 1:00 you're outside, it will be 66 degrees, and then we'll reach into the low 70s for today. it gets even warmer this weekend, we'll talk about that, and also some of your weekend plans where you may be headed, that forecast is coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking headed to work this morning? >> kari, we still have an issue for folks headed in to san francisco on the peninsula. highway 101 because of a deadly crash, human loss of course the biggest factor here, but the traffic delay is why you come to me and we're seeing two crashes in fact, the first one caused the closure northbound 101 to 280, bay shore boulevard is an alternate to get you past that scene but northbound 101 at bay shore boulevard there is another crash causing a backup as you approach the candlestick areas. one may be clearing in the next few minutes, we're getting updates from chp, a little slower as they're doing so much work over there, we're hoping they can update us soon.

still have a couple of slow spots, we're tracking the breaking news as you approach candlestick park. good morning. very happy friday to you as well. the national labor relations board says tesla has to hire back one of its workers it fired who had been pushing to unionize workers there. it also says elon musk who you may recall now asks us to call him technoking. not ceo, technoking elon musk has to delete a tweet he wrote that the government regulators saw it as threatening to the union organizers at the car company. tesla will have to hold informational meetings for employees informing them of their rights. silicon valley tech ceos back in the witness chair before congress on thursday. if you think you've heard this story before, you have. this was mark zuckerberg's seventh time before congress.

here is a picture out of a lab called valassure. they test all kinds of hand sanitizers and a significant number of the off brand sanitizers contained detectible levels of benzine, which can cause cancer and be absorbed through the skin. the fda maintains a list of hand sanitizers you shouldn't use. it is long. it has a lot of goofy names but i put a link on facebook and twitter. i will mention one, though. one is called durasan antimicrobial sanitizer. i always have trouble with that word. it doesn't have benzine but does have microbes in it, what you didn't want in the first place. it's like buying bug spray and bugs come out >> that we don't want. >> no. >> thanks, scott. >> thank you. amazon paying up for e shop pay a $2 million fine in a suit counties.

let's get a look at our temperatures, as we're looking up heading out the door this morning. we're starting out with some upper 30s in some spots, where we have the hills on either side and you're not getting those winds that we've seen in some of the other areas so it's in the upper 30s right now in ukiah and you see the winds in fairfield, where it's just rushing through the delta and into napa and keeping those temperatures pretty warm to start out our day. so let's head over toward the east bay. still home schooling, letting the kids go out and run around in the backyard in between virtual learning or after it's all done and we'll start out with temperatures here in the low 50s at9:00, and then go into the upper 60s and low 70s today. that's going to be so nice, and our high temperatures for the south bay will reach into the low 70s, reaching 72 degrees in east san jose as well as gilroy and morgan hill. for the east bay, we're going to see a high of 73 in martinez and 71 in fremont, and as we head over toward the coastline it's also going to be warm we are some low 60s here and some upper

60s for san francisco, downtown, north bay highs will reach into the mid-70s for today. sonoma reaching 74 degrees. we're going to see more weather like this. high pressure edging in a little bit closer, it's going to warm up our temperatures for the weekend, but there will be some slight cooling early next week. we can see that cool air starting to dive down but still not bringing us any rain and high pressure just moves in right behind that and gives a boost to our temperatures as we go into the middle of next week, so we can see the trend here, warming up for the next several days, a slight cooldown on monday, dropping about ten degrees for our high temperature, and then a big warmup by next we're going to see temperatures in th0 degrees. we'll be watching that. mike, what are you watching right now for the morning commute? >> kari, we have the breaking news on the peninsula. i'm going to back off of those reports i think as far as the urgency, because as we look at the map, we see the slowing and it's let up quite a bit and

quite a bit today, as we get a live look out there in walnut creek. it's 44 degrees. we will see by already some low 60s as we are ch up to 72 in morgan hill and san jose, and 75 in napa. make some plans to get outside. we'll talk more about this forecast, it's coming up in just a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. in less than three weeks all californians over the age of 16 will be eligible to receive the covid-19 vaccine, there's' the word from governor newsom. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us outside of the mass vaccination site in pleasanton. >> reporter: anyone over the age of 50 will be eligible next thursday, april 1st and anyone over the age of 16 they're starting april 15th, even though we're still several days out from those dates, there are some things you can do. one is to go online and register

on the myturn.ca.gov website. so you'll be notified when it's your turn to receive the shot and once you are eligible you'll be able to schedule appointments through myturn or sign up to be notified when one opens up. the cdc has a vaccine finder tool that will help you find vaccination locations near you. some cities and counties provide appointments separately from the myturn website. we spoke with a local woman named janet pitcher, a self-described vaccine whisperer who has helped her family and friends find appointments. she suggests checking with pharmacies after midnight, when they tend to open up appointments. another good time to look for appointments between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. in the morning. she also recommends searching for vaccine groups on facebook where she has found good, reliable, timely information. the bigger limitation from finding a vaccination has been supply. for example in santa clara county, they still do not have enough shots for the current

eligible group. >> we have the capacity to vaccinate over 200,000 people a week in our county and we're doing probably a third of that. >> it shouldn't be this hard. it shouldn't look like "the hunger games." >> reporter: according to figures from the cdc, the number of doses shipped to california next week will be more than 2.2 million, that's almost 475,000 more doses than the governor says we got last week, that is definitely a sizeable increase. during his news conference yesterday, governor newsom also announced that if you go to a vaccine appointment with an eligible family member and you're not eligible, you can still get inoculated at the provider's discretion, there would be no questions asked. reporting live here in pleasanton, bob redell. >> bob, thank you.

developing in san jose, police are investigating after at least three people were shot it happened last night in the area of brigadoon park near 101 and east capitol expressway. one person has life-threatening innings and the other two are not critically injured. there are no leads. investigators are expected to give an update on the supermarket shooting rampage in boulder, colorado. late last night hundreds gathered at a local high school to honor those lives lost. this was organized by moms demand action, a group fighting for gun safety measures. the accused shooter 21-year-old ahmad alissa had his first appearance in court yesterday. the defense asked the judge to delay the next hearing for a few months saying they need more time to assess alissa's mental status. new details in a massive sexual abuse scandal at university of southern california. the school has agreed to a record $852 million payout. it settles the claims tied to more than 700 women accusing a former campus gynecologist of abuse. it follows a first settlement of $215 million adding up to more than $1 billion all together.

dr. george tindall pleaded not guilty to 35 criminal accounts of sexual misconduct. still no response this morning from san francisco unified vice president alison collins after fellow board members last night stripped her of her leadership position. the board approved a no confidence measure with a 5-2 vote. take a listen. >> mr. alexander? >> yes. >> mr. bogus? >> yes. >> miss collins? >> no. >> the measure says collins failed to accept responsibility for words and tweets she sent in 2016 and if she resign it calls for removal from all board committees for the duration of her term. she apologized for racially charged tweets she posted in 2016 and indicated she had no plans to step down. meanwhile, older students in san francisco schools know now when they'll go back to the

classroom. the district announced in-person classes will begin april 26th for middle and high schools. elementary school kids had an april 12th date. the city sued the district demanding it provide a concrete reopening time line. a judge yesterday rejected that lawsuit. starting today some grocery workers in san jose will receive more money on their paychecks. today's the day the city recently approved hazard ordinance pay to take effect. last month, councilmembers approved a $3 an hour wage hike for workers at large chain stores. the pay bump will remain in effect for 120 days. new details in the south bay this morning, the days of collectionless fares are nearing an end for vta. for the past year, fare collection on buss and light rail trains have been suspended due to health risks for operators. the agency just announced that all ends april 1st. some fares will still be free but only if you're headed to a

vaccination site and can show proof. berkeley moving forward with a plan to increase housing for those struggling to make it in the bay. berkeley reports the city council passed two measures to start a new housing plan that would create around 9,000 units. the measures will remove single family zoning in berkeley and allow more multiunit homes like duplexes. city councilmembers say the process will take about two years to complete. 6:37. time to look ahead to the weekend. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect. look at the beautiful sunrise this morning. just mapping out what is set to be a nice weekend, right, kari? >> right and temperatures have been warming up. we have a lot less restrictions this weekend, and this is going to be some of the warmest weather we've had in quite a while. if you're going to santa cruz, it's going to be in the upper 60s all throughout the weekend, very comfortable with the light breeze and that sunshine now, as

minutes. breaking news, continues to be an issue into san francisco, north 101 the connector to north 280, volume picking up, backup picking up because more traffic cannot make that transition, bay shore third to surface streets as your alternate. we'll show you the rest of the bay coming up. president biden gave his first presidential news conference thursday. >> scott mcgrew, the president was not even asked once about the pandemic. pretty surprising. >> it was, considering it's in all of our lives for so long. not a single question about the pandemic. he had to actually bring it up himself. most of the questions were about the number of immigrants and refugees at the border. president biden points out we are turning tens of thousands of people away but he said he wouldn't apologize for sheltering children who come across the desert alone. the president was also asked about new voting laws, several states putting into place, notably states where the vote between democrats and republicans was very close. republicans say it's to make the

vote safer and less prone to abuse. democrats say it's being done to quash their vote particularly the black vote and the president agrees. >> what i'm worried about is how un-american this whole initiative is. it's sick. it's sick. deciding in some states that you cannot bring water to people standing in line, waiting to vote, deciding that you're going to end voting at 5:00 when working people are just getting off work. the republican voters i know find this despicable, republican voters. >> georgia just approved a new state law that would reduce the number of ballot drop-off boxes in rural counties to just one per county and as the president pointed out prohibit people from handing out water in those notoriously long lines that form

in some precincts. a georgia state lawmaker, a democrat says she wanted to attend the governor's press conference and bill signing, republicans, so she knocked on the door. representative park cannon was georgia state troopers took her into custody. georgia's state constitution specifically prohibits the arrest of state lawmakers while the assembly is in session. supporters of georgia's new voting law say new requirements are similar to voting laws in other states and it's necessary to protect the voting process from widespread fraud, but there was no widespread fraud in the most recent elections in georgia. we know that, because the governor of georgia himself said there was no evidence of fraud in recent elections. neither the presidential election in november, nor the two later elections for senators. we also know it because the georgia secretary of state,

republican brad raffensperger and gabriel sterling said there was no evidence of fraud. they became practically household names in the days and weeks after the presidential election, pushing back against the narrative there had been some wrongdoing in their state. georgia counted and audited the ballots for presidential election three separate times and while discrepancies weren't found it wasn't because of fraud and did not change the overall outcome. we're watching what's happening in georgia and iowa and florida, and texas, as the voting laws change, we're talking about it on twitter. you can find me there, i'm @scottmcgrew. >> thank you. happening today a national day of action and healing calling for an end to violence against the asian-american community. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live bay area, santa clara county is doing something important.

"sf gate" reports in recent history disneyland tickets sell out within hours. no word on when tickets will go on sale or how much they're going to actually be, but the buzz is the reopening is going to be one of the most sought after events in the park's history. i'm sure a lot of people have been missing it. so we're all sticking around here until then, meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect from the weather, because you don't have to really go anywhere when you live here in the bay area, right, kari? >> absolutely. we're going to have some really nice weather this weekend. take a look at this sunrise that we're seeing right now, as you head out in the tri-valley, so make sure you have those sunglass and we do need

the jacket for the start of the day, but take a look at these temperatures as you get ready for your morning jog, bike ride, whatever activity gets you going. we'll see those temperatures in the south bay in the low 40s this morning, and then warming up quickly as we see all of that sunshine will head into the60s by late morning. for the south bay this is a look at our high temperature reaching 71 in cupertino and 72 in gilroy. for the east bay we have a lot of 70s here, mid-70s for spots like concord and antioch reaching 72 degrees in oakland and low 60s for half moon bay and daly city, while redwood city will reach 70 degrees and some upper 60s in san francisco today downtown and in the mission district. north bay high also reach 72 in novato as well as clearlake with the light wind and a lot of sunshine. and it's going to continue to warm up this weekend as high pressure continues to move in. notice by monday, a storm system passes very close to the bay area and it will drop our

temperatures, but won't bring us any rain so we continue in this dry pattern through next week, and as high pressure moves right overhead, it's really going to give a boost to our temperatures, especially by next wednesday and thursday. so going through this forecast, some low 70s for the inland areas today. upper 70s for tomorrow, as well as sunday it's going to feel so much more like the end of spring, but then we'll bring it back to some more seasonable weather just briefly on monday next week. look at the highs for the valleys, in the 70s and even reaching 80 degrees by next thursday. we'll be watching that as we head out for our weekends. mike, how is it looking heading out the door for work this morning? >> kari, we have good hope for the transition into san francisco. this is our breaking news into san francisco for those joining us, 101 up the peninsula, the speeds start to improve as you approach the transition to north 280. sounds like a crew is doing the last of the investigation and the clear-up after a crash,
