"today in the bay" starts right" i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm cierra johnson in for laura garcia. we'll have a look at traffic for your mop in a moment, first a look at the start of the week with your weather with meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> good morning. hopefully you had a great weekend. it's still going to be really nice today but a little bit cooler and we're starting out right now at 48 degrees in san jose. a nice cool start to our morning once again but sunshine as we go into today, and our temperatures making it into the 70s for this. we'll talk about some warmer air in our forecast coming up. mike, what's going on right now for the commute? >> kari, it's an alarming report but nothing found to be a problem yet. a wrong-way driver. folks make sure you're fully awake before you hit the roadway, northbound 17, i believe it's actually southbound

going northbound on that side at barracuda report. rom chp. they were during the summit and bear creek road. we'll check until they clear that. the rest of the bay looks clear. looks like there's something going none san mateo. breaking news on the story the world has been watching, crews finally managing to refloat the cargo ship blocking the suez canal. right now that ship has been stuck for nearly a week. it created massive backup in the global supply line. teams had to dredge the canal enough to get the ship to budge which it finally did at high tide with ten tugboats pulling backed up in the canr that all . more bay area students are heading back to campus today.

santa clara unified welcoming back pre-k through second grade and grades six through nine. in the east bay, grades 1 through 12 in san ramon valley returned for hybrid learning schedule. in-person instruction will take place four days each week. students in grades 3 through 12 in mt. diablo will return preschool through second grade resumed in-person instruction on thursday. distance learn something still an option for mt. diablo students. some of the older students, stanford will return to campus for their spring quarter. juniors and seniors are being offered the choice to return to campus and most of the instruction will continue to be remote. strict safety guidelines will be in place, including mandatory twice weekly testing. starting today, people who have no access to vaccination sites in the south bay have a new option that can come to them. santa clara county health

department are rolling out a mobile covid vaccine service, the focus here is on long-term as well as in-home care. the vaccines provided by first responders. the nation as it continues to really deal with this delicate position as covid cases increase alongside vaccinations, this has medical experts really worried. so far at least 93 million americans have gotten at least one dose of the covid-19 vaccination and just over 15% of the population has been fully vaccinated. while that is encouraging, new infection rates are up and covid deaths remain steady. as of today, more than 30 million people have been infected in just over 550,000 people have died. sutter health is appealing its latest six-figure fine on top of a separate six-figure fine that happened a few days prior due to cal osha safety failures tied to covid exposure. they involve nurses were not notified they had been exposed.

the fine amounts to $141,000, in addition to a $155,000 fine in covid death of a nurse at the summit campus. summit argues the exposures occurred outside of their workplace. a live look at san francisco where covid restrictions continue to loosen. this week, entertainment returns to the bay area. from baseball to amusement park, signs of normal life are peering again. here's "today in the bay's" sergio quintana. >> reporter: at the brand new headquarters near chase center uber employees can return to work in what's considered one of the biggest returns for a silicon valley company. 20% of the staff have been invited. having employees return to their offices demean a limited capacity could also be a big boom for smaller businesses. >> the return to office environment will be particularly

important for those small businesses, the restaurants, barbershop, cleaners, the service industry in our downtown areas. >> reporter: this week will not just see a limited return to work. it is a return to work. thursday april 1st, six flags in vallejo will open with rides with limited capacity, everyone will be required to wear masks and all areas will be marked off to ensure physical distancing and at the oakland coliseum, the a's are looking forward to a big homecoming april 1st. >> this is a very historic moment for sports and for the entire bay area. this is the first event with fans since everything was shut down over a year ago. >> reporter: the a's have already been enforcing masks and physical distancing for fans at spring training in arizona. when they play at the oakland coliseum, it will be limited to about 20% capacity, that's 11,000 fans in the audience in groups of no more than four and there's no tailgating allowed. >> the lot's open 09 minutes before the first pitch instead of two and a half hours so it's

slightly more condensed and we're using the honor system and hopeful that our fans will understand these are the guidelines and folks won't tailgate. >> reporter: the gradual reopening of big office spaces and entertainment venue is possible because of plummeting hospitalizations and steady progress with vaccinations. dr. monica gandhi says about 42 people in san francisco have gotten their first dose so people should feel a little more at ease. >> it's not all out. it's not go crazy yet but it's definitely a gradual easing of restrictions. it does give the population joy and i think that's appropriate. >> reporter: sergio quintana, "today in the bay." >> some good news there. 4:37 and over the weekend, communities across the bay area came out in force in rallies to denounce the recent rise in hate crimes against asian-americans. in berkeley, 12-year-old mina made that happen with the help of aapi youth rising.

hundreds gathered to support her in aquatic park and then marched to the bay area pedestrian bridge. inthat. a recent al state berkeley study shows a recent uptick in hate crimes. increases were small in the bay area, in san jose for example, the numbers jump from four to ten during that time. in san francisco the numbers went from six to nine. experts say hate crimes are widely underreported and even when police are involved, sometimes they fail to document those incidents involving bias. happening now, nashville police say at least four people are dead because of flooding. a flash flood emergency has been declared after several storms dropped heavy rain on eastern and central parts of the state. rescues have been under way nonstop and in east texas, a tornado tore through small towns

killing one person and damaging dozens of homes. and i know we haven't had a lot of rain here, but i am curious what we have up for this week, because it was a beautiful week last week. fingers crossed a lot of the same. >> yes, we'll have more of the same. at this point we need some of that rain to move through but we don't want this much and this is a look at all of the storm reports that have been over parts of the south and east coast over the past 24 hours. we could see all the flooding reports around kentucky and tennessee, as well as a lot of the wind damage reports that you can see toward south carolina, up through the northeast. we'll be watching that as we actually have a cold front moving through, but once again, no rain. more on that in just a few minutes. mike, what's going on right now for the morning commute? >> well, kari, we have the chp kind of treading over into your territory as they will, though, because they're talking about for example the san mateo bridge. now as we take a live look out there, chp said overnight squad car perhaps two got pushed

good monday morning. it is 4:42. let's head to san rafael and make some plans to get outside today, as we look at our temperature trend and heading out to the park, it's going to be mostly in the mid-40s throughout much of the early morning hours, but take a look at how fast it warms up, as we head toward the low 70s. we'll talk about a bigger warming trend in our forecast that's coming up in a few minutes. and low 70s, let's say 65, that's pretty much what i'm seeing on the speed sensors out there. a live look shows you the golden gate bridge. chp said there was some fog overnight. right now i see a clear view of all those lights including the headlights and the few tail lights we see as well. more coming up.

good morning. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. wall street is set to open lower this monday morning after the dow and s&p 500 closed at records on friday. the dow is up nearly 7% for the month but the nasdaq is still in the red. investors have jumped out of high-flying tech names amid optimism over the reopening of the economy and vaccine rollouts. traders are bracing for more volatility during this holiday shortened week, as we reach the end of the quarter, pension funds and mutual funds generally rebalance portfolis during this last week. we'll get reports on housing, consumer confidence, manufacturing, and jobs, plus president biden expected to unveil his infrastructure plan on wednesday. jeep meantime plans to install charging stations for electric vehicles at offroad trail heads across the country over the next year. it's part of a team effort with

good morning monday morning. oh, yes, look, a bus and then a van on the golden gate bridge this morning. just giving you a play-by-play what's going on. not trying to take your job, mike. good morning to you all. >> great job. >> look, we're getting started with this monday for you and we want to talk about the forecast for you. meteorologist kari hall it's a little bit warmer this morning. when i say little, i mean five degrees. >> we it k tell the difference a cooler start. we feel it and then milder

temperatures. we normally don't have that but we're all over the map here. it's 39 in napa, compare that to the 59 in brentwood. in some of the spots it got really warm yesterday afternoon and the temperatures are slowly coming back down. it's 46 degrees in hayward -- 42 in hayward and 49 in oakland so for some of us it is a cool start. let's look at this temperature trend in pleasanton. last week before the kids get spring break and a short week, too. heading out for home school recess today at 9:00 we're at 51 degrees and look at the trend, reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s for the middle of the afternoon. as we go through the trends for all of us around the bay area, expect it to start out with some mild weather even at noon, we're starting to see some 60s on the map here. as we go through this forecast we will see a few spots reaching the low 70s but it won't be as warm as it was yesterday, and cooling down nicely tonight with

those winds starting to pick up and that's something we'll be watching between later this evening into tomorrow, and then high pressure moves in, and it's going to warm up our temperatures midweek, but look at what's coming in for the end of the week, a storm system possible that could bring us some more clouds on sunday and possibly some rain on monday, but this whole week is all dry, and at this point, we do desperately need some rain especially we have temperatures reaching into the low 80s by the middle of the week. we'll have more on all of this coming up. mike, have you seen any problems for the morning commute? >> yes, that bus that marcus spotted made it off the golden gate bridge just fine, that's great. let's take a live look and show you the bay bridge because i heard about a disabled vehicle approaching fourth, one of your first exits getting off of the span. looks like everything's cleared and no interruptions to this beautiful picture as we look at the map. same thing with the sensors across the span, the arrows near the toll plaza, no backup, no

problem, no approach issues there. all around the bay a smooth drive and only the little bit of slowing way out at the altamont pass. back to you. >> thanks, mike. this morning, all eyes orren the high-profile case that rocked the nation. the murder trial of former minneapolis police officer derek chauvin begins. he's seen with his knee to george floyd's neck for more than eight minutes. "today in the bay's" jay gray with a closer look at the high-profile case. >> reporter: windows were boarded up, streets blocked off, the number of police and national guard troops growing around the courthouse, security that will continue to build through the trial. >> that presence will reach capacity at a graduated scale as we get closer into the verdict and deliberations, that capacity as you know is about 2,000 national guard and 1,100 law enforcement partners. >> reporter: there were protests this weekend and crowds outside

the courthouse are expected to grow as the high-profile case unfolds. >> if we don't get the verdict we want, then george don't get it. >> reporter: supporters joined sunday night. >> there's a time for change and that change is now. there's only one race, and it's the human race. >> reporter: outside the courtroom the judge expected to take care of some legal housekeeping matters before seating the jury that will ultimately determine derek chauvin's fate. it's not only the former minnesota police officer on trial here. >> it's difficult not also to think more broadly about the fact that the nation is watching because it's also about the fundamental integrity of the system. >> reporter: what will likely be an intense and at times emotional case is expected to last two to four weeks.
